The Smurfocalypse Chapter 93: Community for all

The sun shined bright in the sky and the weather was clear. Outside the walls was an ever growing refugee camp made up of tents where eager hard working Smurfs with nowhere else to live were gathered from all over Europe awaiting their chance to become residences of Port Saint Smurf which at this point in history was a promised land of sorts where Smurfs saw a land of opportunity and safety. The once blood-stench battle ground where Hefty and the knights fought the Cosmic Smurfs was now bustling with life as outsiders lived their lives with hope in their hearts that their time would come to meet with Hefty for a chance to live within the walls. Brainy was tasked with the organization of this camp, and stepped outside with a scroll in his hand accompanied by Harmony Smurf who blew his trumpet to gain the attention of the refugees.

"Attention fellow Smurfs! It is my great honor to welcome you all to Port Saint Smurf! I am Brainy Smurf, and I am standing in as assistant recruiter on this fine summer morning coming out here on behalf of our leader Hefty to welcome six lucky Smurfs into the walls for the chance to interview with Hefty. If I may, I would be so bold as ask your full cooperation and patience in this lengthy process." Brainy said as he read from the scroll.

Harmony puts down his trumpet and retrieves a Smurf cap from behind a rock and hands it to Brainy as Brainy sets down the scroll and takes the cap in his hand.

"In this cap are the names of every Smurf here written on paper as requested when you all arrived. I will now draw six pieces of paper from the hat and read them allowed. If your name is called I ask that you line up in a single file line in an orderly fashion just outside the gate. The gate will then be opened and you will be escorted by a knight to the House of Waiting where I would strongly recommend you sit and wait patiently for your chance at an interview." Brainy said.

Brainy reaches his hand into the hat slowly and moves his fingers around so as to touch every single paper inside before pulling out the first page. Brainy then unfolds the paper and reads the first name.

"Smurfblossom!" Brainy said.

A energetic cry of excitement echoed throughout the camp as a young Smurfette wearing yellow leaps high into the air. She had short natural blue hair, a pink flower in her cap, and sported colorful jewelry around her right wrist with a matching necklace. She carried with her only a bow and arrow with a quiver.

"Yes! Alright!" Smurfblossom cheers as she runs to the gate.

Brainy reaches into the hat once more and draws yet another piece of paper.

"Smurfstorm!" Brainy said.

Yet another young Smurfette wearing yellow with a four leaf clover in her hair rises from her seat outside her tent and joins Smurfblossom at the gate. She too appeared to be an archer.

"Stormy! This is our chance! Aren't you excited!?" Smurfblossom said.

"I am actually very interested in meeting this Hefty Smurf who claims to be the strongest Smurf in the universe." Smurfstorm said.

Brainy reaches his hand into the hat again and pulls from it another scrap of paper.

"Ironworks Smurf!" Brainy said.

A male Smurf possibly upwards of six hundred years of age rises from his seat and joins the two young Smurfette at the gate. He carried with him a hammer used commonly by blacksmiths. He doesn't say a word as he waits just behind Smurfblossom who glances back at him and then quickly draws her attention to smurfstorm.

"He's spooky…" Smurfblossom said.

The elderly Smurf was covered in scars including a scar which went diagonally across his entire face possibly motivating her to say that. It didn't help matters that he was dressed in all black and his grey beard was unkempt and frizzy. Even in his old age he had exceptional biceps and abs. Brainy reaches into the hat once more and retrieves yet another paper.

"Firefighter Smurf!" Brainy said.

A Smurf dressed in a firefighter's uniform picks up a red axe and joins the others in the line. He was perhaps three hundred years old as indicated from the peach fuzz forming on his face giving him nine o clock shadow making him considerably older than the majority of the Smurfs in the walls. Brainy retrieves another slip of paper and reads the name off it.

"Prospector Smurf!" Brainy said.

A Smurf with a brown beard wearing denim pants and a yellow hard helmet stands from the group of refugees. He smiles a toothy grin revealing a solid gold tooth as he picks up his pickaxe and joins the Smurfs at the gate.

"And finally…" Brainy said as he dug his hand into the cap and retrieves what would be today's final slip of paper.

"Grandpa Smurf!" Brainy said.

A Smurf wearing yellow overalls, a yellow Smurf cap, and glasses with a long beard and hair growing down the back of his head which reached his shoulders shakily stood up with the aid of a walking stick and slowly made his way towards the gate with a smile. He was not a day younger than nine hundred, but he had made the journey to Port Saint Smurf despite all that's happened with the world.

"That's all the Smurfs Hefty has time for today! Until then good luck!" Brainy said as he motioned for the gate to open.

The refugee's first glance at Port Saint Smurf brought to their eyes their wildest dream come true. A safe haven protected by sea and towering walls where a Smurf could live their lives peacefully until their dying day. The refugees were greeted by Falconer who was in full armor with Zarus perched on his right arm guard. Although it was tough for him to do so as it was more his nature to maintain a serious expression, Falconer smiled a Smurfy grin as he welcomed the refugees.

"Welcome to Port Saint Smurf. I am Sir Falconer of the Knights of the Smurf Table and I will be your escort today. Please leave all weapons and tools right here before being escorted to the House of Waiting." Falconer said.

Without question Firefighter, Prospector, Ironworks, and Smurfblossom disarmed themselves and piled their tools and weapons towards the designated area. Smurfstorm however narrowed her eyes in distrust as Falconer's request and refused to budge.

"Is there an issue here miss?" Falconer asked Smurfstorm.

"I don't know, you tell me. Is there an issue?" Smurfstorm said.

"It is Hefty's law that refugees are to leave their tools and weapons at the gate." Falconer said.

"Thanks but no thanks. I'm alright as I am." Smurfstorm said.

"Now now Stormy! Don't argue with the nice knight!" Smurfblossom said tugging at Smurfstorm's quiver.

"I will be taking my bow with me. If this Hefty Smurf has an issue with that he can confront me personally." Smurfstorm said.

Falconer's eyes narrowed at Smurfstorm as did Zarus' eyes. The falcon outstretched his wings and flapped them at Smurfstorm.

"Stormy don't cause a scene! We've been very lucky so far don't ruin our chances. Please Stormy…" Smurfblossom said.

Smurfstorm glares at Falconer before slowly disarming herself and placing her weapon and quiver on the pile.

"If you try anything you'll live to regret it." Smurfstorm said as she cautiously pulled Smurfblossom close to her.

"I wouldn't dream of it." Falconer said.

In the background Grandpa Smurf can be seen attempting to place his walking stick into the designated area. His back was visibly causing him pain and as the walking stick fell from his hands he nearly fell right on his face.

"No… Not you elder. Clearly your stick helps you get around." Falconer said as he rushed to Grandpa's aid.

Falconer reached down and picked up the walking stick for Grandpa and handed it to him. The old Smurf smiled.

"Very kind of you whippersmurfer." Grandpa said.

"The House of Waiting is just down this street." Falconer said with a hand gesture.

"Shall we?" Falconer asked as he turned his back to the strangers and began to walk down the cobblestone road.

The House of Waiting was the two story building the Smurfs all stayed in together when they first occupied the port. Falconer led the refugees inside the tall human structure and shut the door behind them. Smurfstorm immediately began searching the living room for traps. She climbs up onto the window ceil and peers outside into the street where she couldn't help but notice Falconer was guarding the house.

"Stay close to me Smurfblossom… I still don't trust them." Smurfstorm said.

"I really don't think there's anything to worry about Stormy." Smurfblossom said.

"We've been crossed before my Smurfs who have lost their way. Never forget what happened to Smurflily…" Smurfstorm said.

"It sounds like the past year or so has been rough on all of us, but if we play our cards just right we could all find peace in this land." Prospector said.

"I agree. It's best we embrace this opportunity with a Smurfy attitude." Firefighter said.

"What about you?" Smurfstorm asked Ironworks.

"I agree with these young ones. This could be a chance to start a new life of peace." Ironworks said.

"And you old timer? What do you make of this?" Smurfstorm asked Grandpa.

Grandpa Smurf who had noticed the statue in the likeness of a familiar face when he was being escorted just smiles.

"I believe we are in good hands." Grandpa said.
