After the Doctor leaves her at her doorstep Donna Noble walks inside wearing a drenched wedding dress. "Where have you been?" Her mum Syliva Noble asks. "Where's Lance?"

"He's gone."

"It's because you ran away with that strange man isn't it?"

"No Mum, he was playing me this whole time?"

"You're just too sensitive."

"Whatever." Donna goes to her room, thinking about the events of the last 16 hours. The next morning she is woken up by someone touching her shoulder. "Grandad?"

"It's me. I know you don't want to celebrate this year after everything with Lance, but you should."

"I have never enjoyed Christmas, it gives Mum more of an excuse to tell me that I am going nowhere."

"I can see you going to far off places, my Donna," Wilf her Grandfather kisses her crown.

'My cards are on the table, yours are in your hand

Chances are, tonight, you've already got plans

And chances are I will talk myself to sleep again

You give me just enough attention to keep my hopes too high

Wishful thoughts forget to mention when something's really not right

And I will block out these voices of reason in my head'

Months have gone by and the election of Harold Saxon is looming. Donna is a temp again, "Donna you got to do more with your life than be a temp." Donna is ignoring her Mum as she does an internet search with the keyword Doctor. "Donna, pay attention to what I am telling you."

"It's the same thing, I am going nowhere, and you are disappointed in me." Donna focuses back on her computer and thinks she found something. She jumps up, "I am going to head out." Hours later Donna stumbles inside to some polls about Harold Saxon. Something feels off about him to her.

"Where were you," Sylvia asks.

"Out."

"That's it just out. It is my car too."

"I'm going to bed now."

'And the voices say, "You are not the exception

You will never learn your lesson"'

As Donna walks onto the TARDIS, "this hasn't changed much."

"I like it," the Doctor smiles at his friend. "Thank you for just wanting to be a friend."

"I can settle for a friend like you."

"Oi." They both start laughing at that as Donna throws one of her bags at the Doctor.

"Why don't you help you Spaceman?" He slings one of the bags thrown at him and they start to laugh. The Doctor and Donna move around the TARDIS until they come to her room. "This is my room?"

"Only your room, I don't have one. I never really sleep." The Doctor walks away as Donna is acquainted with her room.

As the Doctor invites the family onto the TARDIS, "good job Doctor," Donna smiles at him as they all look astounded at the TARDIS console room.

"What is this witchery," Caecilius says.

"It's the TARDIS, now where to Rome?" The Doctor flies around the TARDIS, glad it is drowning out of the sound of everyone screaming as they die. As it lands Donna opens the doors.

"Welcome to your new home." Donna says.

"You two are going to be the new Gods of our family, thank you," Metella informs them.

"Please no, I don't want to be a God. All that does is create evil."

"You can never be evil, my good man," Caecilius says.

"I did it because of Donna, she couldn't watch anyone die. Now go live your life."

'You know how to keep me waitin'

I know how to act like I'm fine

Don't know what to call this situation

But I know I can't call you mine

And it's delicate, but I will do my best to seem bulletproof

'Cause when my head is on your shoulder

It starts thinkin' you'll come around

And maybe, someday, when we're older

This is something we'll laugh about

Over coffee every mornin' while you're watching the news'

"What did you do," Donna asks the Doctor as they get in the TARDIS?"

"I saved her."

"What do you mean?"

"The future me knew that today would be the day we lost her and added on a place to scan her."

"Scan, so the future you soniced her?"

"At one time, yeah. River knows my name and only in one instance us Time Lords can tell someone our name."

"What is that," Donna is watching him as his eyes go wide.

"So what do you want to do?"

"Tell me Spaceboy, what is the reason?"

"Marriage, now how are you doing after all of that?"

"Why did you try to send me back?"

"I didn't want you to die, and you almost did anyway. I am sorry."

"Can I have a day off of adventure?"

"Of course, I know this gorgeous planet that you go to."

'But then the voices say, "You are not the exception

You will never learn your lesson"'

As Donna knew at that moment what this Rose meant. She herself had to die. She runs in front of the car. Time turns back to normal her life with and without the Doctor flashes before her eyes. Next thing she knows a woman is screaming at her. The Doctor comes running.

In the TARDIS, "there are always going to be people attacking you. It always happens to my friends or those who would be perfect for a friend of mine."

"I understand those who are already friends of yours, but would be friends?"

"Ace, well Dorothy. I was in a battle with Fenric, a Viking God that was pure evil. He trapped her in a Time Storm and got her to a planet called Ice World. She would travel with me for over 10 years."

"How did she leave?"

"We got into a big fight. She left, now she runs a charity," the Doctor adds with a big smile.

"Was she like Rose to you?"

"Hell no, she was more like you, my best friend."

As Donna falls in his arms after he wiped her memory of him. He tries not to cry. He walks her into her home and is greeted by Wilf and Syilva. He is shown Donna's room. "There you go Donna Noble, you are protected. If anything were to happen you will not remember but send off something that will help get rid of what is threatening you." After telling off Sylvia he goes back to the TARDIS. A comforting hum welcomes him as he sits down not liking what he had to do to Donna.

'Now I'm slidin' down the wall with my head in my hands

Sayin', "How could I not see the signs?"

Oh, you haven't written me or called

But goodbye screamin' in the silence

And the voices in my head are tellin' me why

'Cause you got her on your arm and me in the wings

I'll get your longing glances, but she'll get your ring

And you will say you had the best of intentions

And maybe I will finally learn my lesson'

"Where are you going Dad," Sylvia asks her Dad.

"Out," he gives his granddaughter, Donna a hug before he walks out the door followed by his daughter.

"You are looking for him again aren't you?" She demands an answer as she asks him.

"I am, I can feel something is somewhere and we need him."

"You haven't been in her majesty's royal guard in decades."

"I know that." Wilf walks away from his daughter and home onto a bus.

Donna puts the lottery ticket in her bust and moves away from her mum and grandad. Sylvia is almost in tears as the Doctor tells her where he got the quid from for the ticket. Later that night as Donna is away on her honeymoon. "He was still with Donna today."

"Both were. I can't believe I am ok with that man."

"The Doctor," Wilf asks her.

"Yes, the Doctor. What he did for Donna, you know that will be a big winner."

"I do, what do you feel that he borrowed the quid from Geoff?"

"One of the sweetest things he has ever done for Donna."

'La-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la, oh

La-la-la-la-la

Ain't never gonna come

Ooh, you will learn the hard way now

Foolish one

Sittin' 'round waiting for confessions of love

They ain't never gonna come

And thinkin' he's the one, you should've been walkin' out

Foolish one

The day is gonna come for your confessions of love

When all is said and done, he just wasn't the one

No, he just wasn't the one'

Decades later and many near misses with her memory sleeping, Donna is with her family. "Mum, what is that?" Her 20 year old daughter Rose asks, they come across a Blue Police Box. Sylvia the moment she sees someone walk out gets in front of her daughter.

"Rose get back?" She doesn't want her family mixing with the Doctor again.

"Something has happened," the Doctor informs them. Donna has her memories flood back.

"Doctor?"

"Hello Donna."

The next thing the Doctor knows it, he is being hit in the chest, "how dare you steal my memories, the only good ones I had until I met my husband."

"I had to, you would've died if I didn't want to wipe your memories Donna."

"How long has it been?"

"Many centuries and multiple regenerations. You were right about River, she was my wife." The group fights the Celestial Toymaker.
