It pained her to see him like this. His guilt ridden face, while also keeping himself from losing the strength to sit up straight and keep his eyes open.

Gruftine sighed. Seeing your boyfriend sitting next to his coffin with his sleeping ex girlfriend in it wasn't ideal. But it was somehow the best outcome.

Sunshine hadn't been hurt badly. A few scratches, nothing more, but she was exhausted. Her first transformation, her escape from killers in training, her leaving behind everything that used to be her home. Gruftine had not enough spite in her to continue to feel her dislike for Sunshine.

Still. Her jealousy lingered. Her worry. Once again being reminded that she was just the second choice. There was even the possibility that she could be left again. Now that Oskar had no reason to be away from Sunshine anymore.

Rational people would say, that it would be horrible to make the assumption, that Oskar was that shallow, or even think about it in this situation. But her insecurities, like ever so often, couldn't keep quiet.

Oskar's palms rubbed over his eyes. She couldn't continue watching him like this.

Her boyfriend flinched when her hand carefully laid down on his shoulder. Oskar turned around and looked at her. His eyes were as tired as they were glassy. A sigh escaped him before he embraced her. His head leaned on her stomach, his arms wrapped around her waist.

She hated herself for wishing he didn't just hug her for comfort, but also because he loved her.

"Go to sleep. I'll watch her." Gruftine whispered with a encouraging smile. He held her tighter as her fingers ran trough his hair. Then Oskar let go, his body language was marked with hesitation. Even when he got up he still wasn't sure. "Thank you." He mumbled hoarsely. Oskar stood before her, squeezing her hand as long as he was passing her. He stopped one last time before he was far away enough to let go of her hand.

As the door shut Gruftine turned around to sit down. Unlike a vampire, Sunshine slept on the side. With every breath her upper body lifted and sank. She almost looked peaceful, as if she didn't go through a traumatic event.

Looking at Sunshine directly made it even harder to keep her inner thoughts away from the future. Sunshine was his first love. What if she was the only one too?

Gruftine shook her head. Again, it was unfair to think of Oskar, or both of them actually, like that. Especially right now. Oskar didn't do anything to suggest he would go back to Sunshine.

Shifting noises made her sit up straight again. Sunshine groaned as she stretched.

She opened her eyes. Deep ocean blue met the dirty rain color of her own eyes.

In that moment Gruftine realized she didn't know what Sunshine thought about her. Did she even like her? Or knew about her and Oskar? Maybe sitting by her had been a bad idea. The vampire did her best to smile.

To her surprise, Sunshine smiled back. She was true to her name. It was almost blinding in how genuinely friendly her smile was.

"Good morning... or uh good evening? What do you guys say when you wake up?" Sunshine asked with a slight giggle. Gruftine smiled slightly. "Oh, here you get bullied either way." She joked. Sunshine giggled. "How are you?" The vampire asked after a short minute of silence.

Sunshine readjusted her position and seemed to think. "Oh I'm better. I think I'll have a lot to unpack but... I'm thankful I'm save here." she explained. So optimistic. "Thanks by the way. For helping me I mean." The blonde added.

The vampire shrugged. "Yeah, no problem. You're important to Oskar so... it was the least I can do." She got quieter with every word. Gruftine couldn't help but avoid Sunshine's eyes. So she didn't notice the other's grin.

Fingers tapped on the side of the coffin. "Sooo you guys are dating right?" Sunshine asked with obvious and very badly hidden excitement. This level of positive energy wasn't what Gruftine had expected. Not at all.

She played with her fingers. "Yeah... we are." If vampires could actually blush, she would have been deeply red. Sunshine's eyes seemed to sparkle. She started rambling: "Oh I knew it! You're Gruftine then right? Oskar told me a lot about you! Wow you're even more pretty than on the picture he showed me."

Now Gruftine was sure that her flustering beat her biology. There was no way she wasn't blushing, but she was smiling for sure. "Oh thank you." "You're welcome!" Sunshine smiled so genuinely.

"Aren't you... mad?" Gruftine asked. "Usually people are mad or jealous." She added, feeling guilty for, what she knew, would be her own reaction. Sunshine shrugged. "Not really. I mean I still like Oskar a lot- he's the best friend I ever had,- but towards the end we were more like buddies anyways."

Sunshine still smiled. "Sorry i don't really know what to say." Gruftine admitted. "Yeah it's probably a weird situation." Sunshine said. "But I promise no hard feelings. How could I? You helped saving me. And even if not. I don't like the whole... »hating people because they happen to be the new partner of exes- thing« dunno." She added.

A sigh. "It's hard. He used to love you a lot." Gruftine immediately regretted saying that. "Sorry- I didn't mean-" She groaned hiding her face in her hands. "You know... Oskar and I talked a lot about it before we broke up." Sunshine started. "We both noticed that we kind of represented to each other what was a taboo in our worlds. We were so different but still could get along. When I learned what he was... it made sense. I'm a... I mean back then we thought I'm Human. I was raised by a vampire hunter. My name is literally Sunshine- I mean hello??" Once again she was giggling. Gruftine looked up. Then Sunshine's hands grabbed her hands.

"I'm was an escapism... and you are- from what I've heard- the world he wants to live in."

Her eyes got big. Gruftine didn't know what to say but she could smile thankfully. Then she realized. "Shit. Sorry for making this about me uh- do you need something? Food? Water? Should I get Oskar?" She asked, speaking faster than before.

Sunshine laughed and this time Gruftine couldn't help but join in. "Let's hope I'll get less awkward around you." She admitted. "What? No? You were so cool, I was so scared you would think I'm embarrassing." Sunshine grinned. "I was literally trying to sound like one of the books I'm reading."

Both girls had to laugh again. "Speaking of him. Where is he?" Sunshine asked. "Sleeping, hopefully." Gruftine said. "He really worried a lot. He sat next to you like ten minutes ago. But I'm sure you'll see him in a few hours." She added. Sunshine nodded. Now the silence wasn't awkward anymore. "Now- you gotta tell me all about how you guys got together." Gruftine flinched. "I uh- maybe we should get you new bandages."

Gruftine could hear Sunshine laugh as she hurried away from the chair. "I'll be back." she promised. "I'll be waiting for answers." The blonde yelled after her.
