It was starting to become daunting.

Even with Melanie gone Greg's life wasn't any easier. His wounds were slow to heal, even more so with the wounds from the lab explosion reopening during Melanie's final assault.

His mental state was even worse as he woke up, screaming, nearly every night. He never spoke to anyone about what was in the nightmares, but they were severe if he couldn't even tell his closest friends. Sara would try and comfort him time and again, but he'd pull away, out of fear. It hurt slightly but she knew he wasn't afraid of her.

The other major issue was their living arrangement. Greg, having abandoned his place he shared with Melanie, was couch hopping between Nick and Sara's. Sara, having dealt with Greg's abduction from her apartment, couldn't stand to be there anymore, especially after having woken up in cold sweats, a scream lodged in her throat. When she woke up that way, she found herself in the living room, her eyes on Greg the rest of the night.

Grissom had offered up therapy, but both refused, not ready to speak with an outsider just yet. However, if they felt open to it, Greg and Sara would talk to each other, but it didn't happen very often. It seemed as if since Melanie's final attack, Greg distanced himself from everyone, almost as if he spoke to them, Melanie would come back from the grave to hurt him.

The loud, rambunctious and silly Greg they once knew was replaced by a distant shell who could hardly move from whatever bed he lay on.

The whole situation was sad and depressive, but Sara couldn't find it in herself to abandon him when he was at his most fragile, he didn't deserve that.

So, she sat on her couch, her laptop in front of her going through house and apartment listings, hoping that whatever she could find Greg would be open to it. She wasn't sure if he chose to live on his own, if she could handle it. The thought of Melanie breaking in sending a shiver down her spine.

She had brought her focus back to the computer, looking through another listing when a scream, from the other room, made her jump, her hand moving to her heart, before she bolted to her room.

By the time she got to her room, Greg was in the back corner of the bed, his back to the wall, with his knees drawn to his chest, panting heavily.

"Hey Greg, it's okay." Sara whispered moving across the bed, her hand moving gently across his back. She was surprised as his shaky form fell into her lap, breathing heavy, his hand half-heartedly squeezing the skin near her knee, trying to calm his racing heart. Every time she saw him like this, her heart broke a little more. Running a hand through his sweat soaked hair, she breathed. "It's okay. I'm here…your safe."

After a few minutes she could tell he was back to sleep, his soft even breaths tickling her leg, his fidgeting hand from before lay flat against her knee.

It was times like this that she cherished most lately. Greg was calm and welcoming, he even seemed to rest easier. He was still incredibly fragile.

"Sara?"

Greg's question threw Sara as she rubbed her eyes tiredly. Apparently while she thought she was lost in thought; she had actually fallen asleep herself. "Sorry… I came in here…."

"Because I had another nightmare?" Greg sighed from his position across from her, his eyes on the bedspread.

"Yeah… but I've told you I'm here for you."

"I know that Sara…." He huffed, his eyes brimming with unshed tears. "…but I've put you out enough… you shouldn't have to deal with this… with me." He turned away from her, wiping his eyes.

"Greg…" Sara sighed, scooting closer to him, her hand pressing into his shoulder, bringing his gaze back to her. "If I didn't want to help you then I wouldn't be here." When he didn't respond, his eyes back on the bed, she bit her lip. "Are… are you afraid of me?"

"N…no…" Tears flowed freely from his eyes, his eyes moving to the ceiling. He hated being so vulnerable… let alone in front of her, but it seemed as if all the emotions he held in started to flow out. "I'm afraid… of myself."

His response completely through her for a loop. "What? Yourself? Why?"

"I… don't know myself anymore."

At his confession, Sara's eyes clenched shut, a sigh at her lips. He was worse off than she thought. He put the blame solely on himself and that was the last place it should be. "Would you let me help you?"

"How Sara?... if I don't know what to do… then how will you?" Greg sighed, he felt like a lost cause.

"I may not know Greg..." Sara smiled, placing a hand on his leg. "…but I'm willing to try… anything to help you."

A little put off by where her hand was, Greg offered a small smile. "Thanks."

Squeezing his leg, Sara chuckled. "Ok… change your clothes and put on shoes."

"What?" He was shocked she wanted to start now.

"I said change your clothes and put on shoes…" Squeezing his leg again, she moved from the bed to the door, adding. "I'll be in the living room."

The whole situation felt odd. He liked that she wanted to help him get out of his head, but her last words almost felt flirtatious and where he stood right now, he wasn't ready. Taking a breath, he shakily changed his clothes, putting on his shoes for the first time since he left Nick's a week ago. Taking another deep breath, he stepped into the living room. "I'm ready."

Picking up her keys Sara's eyes lit up, pointing to the door. "Let's go."

By the time they got back to Sara's it was already dark outside. They had spent nearly the whole day in a dark theater, picking whatever was on the 'Now Showing' board. Laughing and joking from the comical parts in the various movies they saw. To teasing and joking with each other, even having a popcorn and candy fight, which nearly got them kicked out of the theater.

"I swear I think my ass is numb." Greg chuckled as they stepped into Sara's apartment, his hand rubbing over his tender rear.

"Better than having popcorn tangled in your hair." Sara giggled, pulling a puffed kernel from her tousled hair and throwing it at him.

Dodging the kernel, he plopped on the couch. "Hey, it was payback for pelting me with the M&M's."

"I didn't squish them and work them into your hair." She deadpanned coming to stand in front of him, her arms crossed.

Licking his lips, Greg had to bite his tongue to keep from laughing. "The popcorn made me, do it?"

His questioning response made her giggle, shaking her head and throwing the pillow from the chair next to her at him playfully. "I'm going to go jump in the shower."

"Ok…" They shared a smile before Sara moved to her room. Before she got out of earshot, he added. "Don't forget your butter shampoo." His yell brought out a full laugh from her as she disappeared behind the bathroom door.

Once the door closed the air around him changed. "What, you don't want to help her get the popcorn out of her hair?" The echo of Melanie's voice reverberated in ear, making him shiver. He knew she wasn't there physically but mentally she had him trapped. Every time he was alone, her words would tickle his ear drums to the point he thought she was behind him.

Kicking off his shoes Greg lay back on the couch trying to ignore her sardonic words as they came again. "I'm sure she'd want you to… why do your think she took you home after I punished you?"

When Sara stepped out of her room, her hair was damp and a smile on her face. "Hey…" She started, only to stop finding Greg curled into the back of the couch, his arm covering his ear as his back moved up and down with heavy breaths.

She didn't even have to step up to him to know he was in an uneasy sleep. Something had happened to him from the time she went into her room, to the time she came back out.

Not even an hour ago he was laughing and playing with her, almost seemed like the old Greg she knew. Now he was back to the shell he was the day before.

Sighing in frustration, Sara reluctantly retreated to her room. They had had fun earlier and he hadn't had an issue. Hell, he was the one who started their popcorn/candy fight.

She needed to figure out another thing to distract him with. The movies were great, but she needed something else.

Sara had managed to fall into a light sleep when an ear-piercing scream had her jerking up in bed. Pushing off her blanket she made her way back to the living room.

Finding him still curled into the couch, his body trembling in fear, a soft but persistent whimper at his lips broke her heart. Running her fingers through his sweaty curls, she sighed. "Come on." Gingerly lifting his head, Sara settled back against the couch, easing his head back into her lap. Stroking his hair she relaxed feeling his breath soften, his body relaxing.
