The Triwizard Tournament's third task leaves everyone afraid of Harry Potter who is the lord of several houses.
This story concludes just days after the ritual in the Graveyard with consequences for Tom Riddle because he ignored or forgot important knowledge from his muggle upbringing.
Harry triumphs!
~~~***~~~ CHANGE SCENE
The Evidence Cover-UpThe carcass of the snake lay among the headstones. Nagini could not resist the order of the speaker who commanded the King of Snakes. Her death was protracted as she writhed in pain, slinging her head against the headstones. Finally, she dropped to the ground and lay still.
Breathing hard, Harry took a moment to survey the area and determine for certain the Dark Lord was truly gone, and none of the Death Eaters had apparated into the graveyard responding to the summons.
He could detect no magic anywhere other than in the arm left behind by the Dark Lord's homunculus when it apparated away. Then Harry summoned Dobby. The little elf popped into the graveyard, wielding a meat cleaver that was three times his weight.
The elf was followed by a dozen goblins arriving via silent apparition. Ironstream dressed for battle, yelled at his vault-holder for the next two minutes, ordered the magic users to remove the snake, the piece of the Dark Lord, and the cauldron of what he called, 'Dark Lord Poop.'
The elf demanded that a goblin heal the cut on the arm of his Mr Harry Potter. Dobby also returned his wizard's original wand and collected the wand left by Peter Pettigrew. The rat-faced wizard was still alive, but the blood loss, exhaustion and snake venom would end his life shortly.
"We must not stay here, Vault-holder!" Ironstream said. "The elf arrived and demanded we come to rescue you."
"The ritual didn't work, and I'll come tell you the whole story in the next few days," Harry promised.
"Will you return to Hogwarts?"
"I must. The DMLE will verify Peter Pettigrew's identity and I shall demand the Ministry rescind his Order of Merlin!"
Ironstream looked at Dobby and said, "Good work, elf. Keep your wizard alive until he can escape Magical Britain this summer!"
"Dobby keeps Mr Harry Potters alive for many years! Dobby needs lots of baby Potters to look after for next ten-ten years!"
The goblins vanished taking all the evidence of a resurrection, the carcass of Nagini, and the Dark Lord's left arm. Dobby promised to shadow Mr Harry Potters at Hogwarts when he returned, and the meat cleaver remained in his hands.
The ReturnGrabbing hold of Peter Pettigrew's remaining arm, and summoning the Triwizard Tournament trophy, Harry was thrown through magic by a second port key that returned him to the judge's platform at the Quidditch pitch. He landed on top of Peter and yelled, "Aurors! I need Aurors!"
Everyone remaining around the burned-out maze was exhausted. The fires had raged and spread into the Forbidden Forest. Aurors and Unspeakables had fought the fire with spells to summon rain and geysers of water. Once an Unspeakable listened to Hermione Granger's description of a fire hose, wizards on brooms were able to get the fire under control.
Neville and Hermione noticed that Harry never appeared on the judge's platform and demanded someone look for the missing champion. When Victor Krum added his support to the calls to look for Potter, Sirius NoName leapt into the argument, accusing the Bulgarian seeker of attempting to seduce an underaged boy. Dumbledore attempted to mediate the argument until the two wizards began to duel.
At the same time, Neville and Hermione spoke with Madam Bones about searching for their missing friend. Then Professor Moody rubbed his left arm, laughed and declared, "The Dark Lord Voldemort has returned! He has touched my magic!"
The wizard transformed back into his natural form of Bartemius Crouch, Jr, laughed again, and raised his wand to apparate away. Unfortunately for Crouch, Hermione Granger cast Expelliarmus and grabbed the wizard's wand from the air just as Neville leapt on the man, carried him to the ground and pounded him with his fists while cursing him with language no one could believe the young wizard knew.
Director Bones refused to order anyone to stop the boy from beating the wizard for a full three minutes. Albus Dumbledore was horrified at the violence exhibited by the Longbottom heir but when he thought about intervening, he was warned off by the wand of the muggleborn Granger.
Crouch was transported magically to the Ministry, and everyone heard a voice demand, "Aurors! I need Aurors!"
Neville and Hermione saw Harry on the platform, and everyone heard him calling for Aurors, Director Bones and four Aurors ran up the steps. A senior Auror ran diagnostics on the unconscious wizard Potter had brought with him. Despite Director Bones' requests, Potter waited until Headmaster Dumbledore approached close enough to explain.
With Albus leaning close, Harry grabbed the elderly wizard's beard, pulled his head down and popped him with his fist three times, striking the old man's nose, cheek and eye. Dumbledore collapsed to the platform. Before Potter could fall onto Dumbledore and repeat the beating Longbottom had delivered on Crouch, Jr, Director Bones petrified him for a moment.
"Mr Potter, explain yourself," she demanded.
"No one told us there was a fourth task! I thought the tournament was over after the third task, but nooooo!" Harry spit, his eyes flashing fire with sparks flying from his hair. Dumbledore cowered on the platform floor and suddenly understood how the Hungarian Horntail felt that afternoon in November when Harry Potter stood before her.
Regaining control of his body, Potter shook his fist at Dumbledore and cursed, "You wanker! A fourth task! Why didn't you warn me there was a fourth task?"
Bones asked, "What do you mean, Potter?"
Harry frowned and said, "Well, 'Bones', I was told the portkey would bring me here. But it was a muggle graveyard somewhere with this crazy Death Eater and a giant snake."
Dismissing the wizard's statement, the formidable witch stated, "You should refer to me as Director Bones."
"Okay, 'Director Bones, you may call me Lord Potter-Black-Slytherin," Harry replied, as Dobby made the symbols of the wizard's three houses appeared on his uniform. Ignoring the woman's blush to be properly reprimanded by a lord with much greater power in the Wizengamot, Harry continued, "Again, I landed in some graveyard and had to fight this crazy Death Eater and his giant snake. The snake bit the Death Eater before I chopped off its head and then banished the corpse…uh, carcass of the snake."
"This is Peter Pettigrew," Bones said, motioning toward the form laying near Dumbledore. "He fought…No, Black was cleared of being a Death Eater and traitor."
Harry insisted, "Look at Pettigrew's arm…the one missing the hand. He's got that tattoo the Dark Lord used to mark his followers."
"The man's dead," reported the Senior Auror. "But he does have the Death Eater mark on his arm."
Stuttering slightly, Dumbledore asked, "What happened to Peter's hand?"
"I was aiming the cutting curse at Pettigrew's neck, but he stuck his arm in the way," Harry explained.
"Harry…that's awfully dark!"
"Lord Potter-Black-Slytherin!" retorted Harry. "How is it dark to defend my life, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore? Do you think I should have used the levitation charm instead of a cutting curse?"
"No, of course not Lord Potter-Black-Slytherin," Director Bones inserted into the conversation. "By the way, Lord…"
"Lord Potter is fine for you, Director Bones," Harry said. "Now, I want the Wizengamot to call back Pettigrew's Order of Merlin. The man did nothing to deserve the award!"
Dumbledore wisely remained silent, as Director Bones nodded. She ordered a team of Aurors to use the trophy and investigate the site. Then she turned back and asked, "What about Black? Krum just beat him in a duel."
Harry grimaced. "The condition of Sirius NoName is not a concern of the Black family."
The headmaster could not control himself, "Mr Potter! You cannot do that to your godfather!"
Harry glanced at the headmaster who had climbed back to his feet and asked, "Headmaster Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, do you mean to interfere with a personal family matter?"
"Yes! You're too young to…"
"Director Bones, I ask that you arrest Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore for attempted Line Theft. As Lord Black, I disowned the wizard named Sirius NoName and this wizard has just attempted to interfere."
"Lord Potter, he just made a comment," Bones argued and turned away.
Dumbledore smirked underneath his beard and turned to leave the platform. He didn't look back and it was much later that he realized the look of disgust on the boy's face.
During his walk back to Hogwarts, he did find Remus Lupin attempting to help a wounded Sirius. "Remus, what happened to Sirius? Who did this?"
"I did!" declared Victor Krum. "This wizard without any sense or honour accused me of plotting to seduce Lord Potter-Black-Slytherin. You were there old man and tried to get me to apologise, remember?"
"Oh, yes," Dumbledore replied. "Take him to the infirmary Remus. Madam Pomphrey will put him to rights in a day or so."
The Bulgarian seeker didn't turn his back on any of the British wizards until they all left. Then he and the other students from Durmstrang returned to their ship.
The morning following the third task, the students from the three schools gathered in the Great Hall for breakfast. There was the scent of smoke in the air from the fires that had raged through the Forbidden Forest – Hagrid was making a survey of the damaged area and planning restoration magics to help trees and shrubs to grow this summer.
There were five days left in the school term where examinations would be completed, and summer lessons assigned. Immediately upon all staff taking tehri seats, Dumbledore rose once again and stated, "Good morning! Good morning!"
He smiled at everyone and continued, "After last night's exciting conclusion to the Triwizard Tournament, there is one final task to complete. The winner, Harry Potter, must be awarded the thousand galleons prize."
There were whispers and turned heads looking for the young wizard, but he wasn't seated at the Gryffindor table. Dumbledore announced once again, "Harry Potter!"
Ron Weasley gathered his courage (or greed) and shouted, "If the wanker don't want the galleons, I'll take 'em!"
At that moment, the double doors of the Great Hall opened and Lord Potter-Black-Slytherin walked forward. He was dressed in the formal green robes with the three emblems of his houses that he'd worn in the first task many months earlier. Every eye watched as the lord walked confidently down the side of the Gryffindor table where he stopped to greet the few members he counted as friends or acquaintances, then he continued to stand off centre of the staff table where he could keep a clear view of Dumbledore's hands underneath the table. Flitwick noted there were substantial shields guarding the young lord – three family magics, elven and goblin shields in place.
'Impressive.'
"Good morning, Headmaster Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore."
"Good morning, Harry," replied Dumbledore.
"Lord Potter-Black-Slytherin," said the ghost of the Grey Lady, floating into the Great Hall from overhead. "Albus! For once, don't embarrass Lady Hogwarts with your lack of manners! You were a half-blood student here more than 120 years ago and everyone had mandatory classes in manners and customs then! You're old brain must be forgetting lessons that were beat into you by the professors!"
Embarrassed for everyone to hear he was a half-blood, Dumbledore grimaced and repeated the ghost's greeting, "Lord Potter-Black-Slytherin. Good morning, Lord Potter-Black-Slytherin."
While the Gray Lady floated just behind and between dumbledore and McGonagall, the headmaster explained, "I have been asked by the Minister of Magic to award you the bag of galleons as champion. One thousand galleons."
The bag appeared on the table and the headmaster used his wand to cast the levitation spell and float the bag toward the boy. The ghost of the Nearly Headless Nick, the baron who dealt with Slytherin House, appeared and swam through the bag twice, removing all the tracking spells, compulsions, and charms that Dumbledore had placed on the individual coins, the bag, the string used to close the top, and the little tag with the name 'Harry Potter' written on it.
"Tasteless! Utterly tasteless and clumsy, Dumbledore!" the Gray Lady declared. The bag hovered next to Harry but rather than touch it, he conjured a table to hold the bag, and summoned Dobby.
The elf appeared, still carrying the large meat cleaver that was three times his size. Slamming the cleaver into the tabletop so that it was handy to grab and throw if needed, the elf proceeded to open the bag and pour out the coins. He levitated the coins into a new bag and reported, "Mr Harry Potters-Blacks-Slytherins-Snake, there be only 994 galleons here. Six galleons be missing."
Every eye in the Great Hall turned back to Albus Dumbledore who blushed. He attempted to explain the missing coins by saying, "The bag cost six galleons."
The elf threw the empty sack back to the headmaster and the wizard sighed, drew coins from his pocket and moved to throw them toward the elf when the Gray Lady said, "The correct coins, Albus. Not your leprechaun gold."
Grimacing and not moving for a moment, Dumbledore tried to avoid the camera flashes as the Daily Prophet photographer made pictures for tomorrow's front page. Then the Gray Lady swooped down and sat inside Albus Dumbledore! The wizard shivered with the coldness of the ghost inside his form and hurried to withdraw and banish the correct coins toward the house elf.
Dobby repeated the spells to remove the charms and portkeys on the coins whole loudly muttering about untrustworthy wizards. He added the six coins to the Gringotts bag and told his wizard, "Dobby has all one thousand safe galleons now, Mr Harry Potters-Blacks-Slytherins-Snake."
"Thanks Dobby," Harry replied, making every pureblood witch and wizard cringe hearing the powerful lord speak casually to a servant. "Take it to the bank."
The elf bowed, his ears slapping the top of the table, before he grinned, grabbed the bag and the meat cleaver and popped out of the Great Hall, taking the table with him. Without a word to Dumbledore, Lord Potter-Black-Slytherin walked to his usual spot at the Gryffindor table and sat beside Hermione Granger. Neville Longbottom sat on Miss Granger's other side and the three friends spoke congenially about their plans for the coming summer.
The Daily Prophet arrived during breakfast with the front-page covered photos from the third task – Harry's favourite was the Blasted-End Skrewt flying through the air when Fleur threw it out of the maze and onto the judge's platform. The quick wand work by Headmistress Olympe sent the creature back into the maze. There were multiple photos of the fire that raged through the Forbidden Forest, and the three champions.
When the meal was finished, Harry made a point of speaking to Madam Olympe and Headmaster Karkaroff, and to Victor Krum and Boris. He knew the two schools were leaving Scotland as soon as the students were loaded into their magical vehicles.
The Hogwarts students dispersed for the classrooms around the school or the library while the professors followed. Dumbledore remained seated in his throne at the staff table while the ghosts discussed the wizard's many failings as headmaster, a wizard, and a human being.
Just outside the doors to the Great Hall, Harry took time to hug Hermione and shake hands with Neville. He promised, "I'll see both of you this summer. Keep an eye out for Hedwig or Dobby bringing you letters."
"I hate you'll miss the ride on the Hogwarts Express," Hermione said sadly.
"What? Miss the visit by Malfoy and the Weasleys?" asked Harry.
"On second thought, take us with you! Please!" joked Neville.
Harry laughed and walked out the front door of the castle. He pulled his broom from his pocket, returned it to normal size and flew off toward Hogsmeade. There he entered Three Broomsticks and used the floo to travel to Gringotts Bank.
The next day, with the new scandal of Dumbledore's mother being a muggleborn dominating the newspaper headlines, it was only after lunch that the headmaster noticed that Harry Potter was not at the table. No one had seen the boy and an interview with Mr Longbottom revealed that the boy left the castle after breakfast the previous morning. Before supper, Neville was summoned to the headmaster's office (with Granger). Once there, the young wizard demanded that his grandmother be summoned before any questions were asked.
Willing to summon Augusta Longbottom, Dumbledore planned to share the memory of her grandson pummelling Barty Crouch, Jr and leaving the man bloody and broken on the ground. After Neville revealed he knew Lord Harry Potter-Black-Slytherin left the school the previous day, but he had no idea of his friend's plans. And Miss Granger echoed the report.
"Harry told us he'd contact us this summer but didn't say anything else."
Frustrated at the answers, Dumbledore asked Lady Longbottom to view the memory of her grandson beating a wizard bloody with his fists.
When Augusta came out of the Pensieve, the old wizard was shocked when the witch hugged and kissed her grandson. She praised his actions and assured him that his mother and father would approve of his behaviour. She said, "Always remember your heritage from Viking and Saxon warriors, Neville Longbottom!"
As Lady Augusta turned to leave with her grandson and the muggleborn witch, she told Dumbledore, "Crouch confessed everything under Veritaserum this morning. He was tried, convicted and kissed before lunch. The minister does not want to deal with lies among the purebloods."
Shocked at the news, Dumbledore asked, "Kissed?"
Nodding, Augusta asked, "And did you hear the news from Azkaban?"
"No. What has happened?"
"The Death Eaters claim the Dark Lord is eating their magic – he is taking it from them. They stuck their faces through the windows in the cell doors to be kissed by the Dementors…well, all of them except for Bellatrix Lestrange. She sings about the 'Dark Lord eating her death,' and laughing."
Augusta remained at Hogwarts for the evening meal and enjoyed a pleasant conversation with Neville and his friend, Hermione about their classes and summer plans.
Before she apparated away, Lady Longbottom decided, 'Bones can go suck eggs before I'll tie Neville to her niece. Amelia should marry Susan to an intelligent muggleborn if she wants strong magic in the family.'
'I must meet the parents of Miss Granger – doctors for teeth. How interesting.'
The Mysteries of July 1995The Daily Prophet made much about the disappearance of Harry Potter for a week after Albus Dumbledore made an issue of the boy's absence from the home of his relatives. The Dursleys refused all interviews with the Aurors, and the muggle authorities who knew about magic backed the family demands to be left alone – Harry Potter didn't live there any longer.
The news of a strange illness striking many prominent members of pureblood society took over the headlines the next week. Saint Mungo's confirmed that several wizards and witches (more than 200) suffered the effects of an illness diminished the amount of magic available to them. The Unspeakables were consulted but after casting several diagnostic spells, they refused to become involved.
(Later that same week, three Unspeakables (all half-bloods), ventured out and captured a deranged creature or homunculus that they confined within a chamber in the department of mysteries. Unspeakable #23 allowed the Unspeakables to seal the chamber to all visitors and the Department of Mysteries tracked the months it took for the homunculus to lose the last of its magic – April 1996 shortly after Mr Lucius Malfoy passed away – the last of the former Death Eaters who suffered from the mysterious disease.
Sirius NoName and Remus Lupin left Britain that summer and settled on a magical resort island in the Caribbean Sea. Within six months of arriving on the island, NoName married Lupin and the two wizards operated a bar and remained together for forty years.
Forced to retire from Hogwarts after the school year 1995-1996, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore lived for another seven years, before he died of Magical Exhaustion while searching for mysterious artifacts in deserted homes in Magical Britain. In the last years of his life, he maintained that Dark Lord Voldemort would return! His claim of there being powerful artifacts that kept the wizard anchored to life were never proven and the elderly wizard's ramblings were attributed to senility.
Professor Filius Flitwick knew that there had been terrible, forbidden magics used by Tom Riddle to anchor his soul to the earth. At the request of relatives in Gringotts, he'd explored through the Room of Requirement at Hogwarts and found the Diadem of Ravenclaw. The relic was contaminated by the horrible soul magic used by Riddle but the goblins removed the bit of the wizard's soul. Flitwick never knew the particulars of Gringotts efforts but when he viewed an interesting collection of objects in a display case in the lobby of Gringotts, he made his own conclusions.
Gringotts did not involve itself with the mundane matters of wizards, their only goal was to remain profitable.
Harry Potter never returned to Magical Britain after he escaped in June 1995. Once he reached France, he and Dobby travelled around Europe to rest, eat wonderful food, and enjoy the sites and museums. For a time, he lived in Switzerland with private tutors to complete his OWLS. Then he moved to Magical USA to finish his education under an assumed name. He attended University in the United States and spent a year at Oxford in England where he reconnected with his friends Neville Longbottom and his fiancée, Hermione Granger. The trio of friends decided to scandalise Magical Britain when he attended Neville and Hermione's wedding in disguise as Hermione's muggle-born cousin from the States.
Harry remained a Quidditch fan and attended the Quidditch matches were Victor and Boris played when the game was within reach by apparition or portkey. He never played professionally though he was a silent partner in two teams based in Greece and Australia.
On a trip to Australia, Harry met a healer who worked in a local hospital (mixed magical and mundane). Rose Wilson was a physician in the muggle world and a healer for magical people. She was working on the young seeker from the team where Harry was invested, and they struck up a conversation that turned into dinner.
Dr Wilson was smitten by the young wizard who appeared at her door with roses many times that year. The only bump in their relationship occurred when she learned the extent of his wealth, but he promised not to allow it to control their lives when she consented to become Dr Rose Wilson (Lady Potter-Black-Slytherin) that autumn. They married, lived outside of Sydney and had five children who made Dobby very happy.
