"Kat's school is putting on a play next week," Rachel said as she came in. "She doesn't seem too excited about it though."
"Oh," Alex said, not really paying much attention.
"Is something wrong?"
"Um, no, nothing's wrong," Alex responded a little too quickly.
"Are you sure? You're usually more... alert."
"There's just some... distractions lately. That's all it is."
"Oh? Distractions? Would these be personal or professional distractions?" Rachel asked.
"I'm really not in the mood to talk about it."
Just then, Derek came into the room. "Alex, we need to talk."
Alex followed him.
"So, either she'll talk to him about it or it's something else they're talking about," Rachel said with a shake of her head.
"So, are we going to talk about this? Or are you going to take off to check on Arabella again?" Alex asked.
"We're going to talk," he said.
"Good, because I need to know what you want."
"I'm not entirely sure what I want. But I do think that now isn't a good time to tell Arabella you're having a baby too."
"So I don't get a choice in whether or not I have a abortion?" she asked.
Derek looked at her. "I... didn't think about that..."
"Relax, I wasn't even thinking about that either. I've noticed how much everything comes back to your daughter. You realize that if we keep this baby she won't be your only child?"
"She'll get used to it either way, once she's told," Derek said. "She's just going through too much to tell her right now."
"Ok, what is going on up there? What is Philip doing now?"
"He's taking away most of her books, covering with too many blankets and he won't let her go to the bathroom on her own, even though the doctor says she can. Philip also doesn't seem to want to drop the subject of marriage and has been trying too hard to get her to keep the baby. He was doing some of that before she even took the test."
"Do you feel better now?"
"Not particularly. I... I think I should check on her again."
"Come on, Derek, don't you think you're overdoing Daddy duty? She's twenty years old. She has to learn to mediate the situation herself. Don't forget, she's not the only one having a baby."
Nick stood leaning against the wall outside the doorway of Arabella's closed bedroom door. "Derek said you need to lay off on the bathroom attendance!" he called out. After a few minutes, he said, "you're supposed to leave books for her!" Then: "Lay off the blankets!"
"What are you doing?" Rachel asked as she came into the hallway.
"Call it obedience training for overly concerned soon-to-be former priests who're going to be daddies," Nick said.
"Ok, good luck with that."
"Should I tell him to lay off feeding her by hand?"
Rachel laughed. "Only if he's force-feeding her!"
"Don't force-feed her!" Nick called out.
Philip suddenly jerked the door open. "Would you stop it? She's trying to sleep!"
"Stop designating her naptimes."
"I'm not." He closed the door again.
"Yeah, you are!"
"Make him shut up!" Arabella shouted.
"Oh... maybe he isn't deciding her naptimes," Nick said thoughtfully.
"Come on," Rachel said, grabbing Nick by the arm. "We'll find you something else to do," she added just as Philip was opening the door again.
"He's gone," Philip said.
"Good, now let me sleep," Arabella said. "And you don't need to stay here and watch me. I don't need supervision to sleep."
"I'm worried about you."
"I'm doing everything the doctor tells me. You're freaking out over nothing."
"You're not doing everything the doctor said. You're avoiding following the diet she put you on. There's a reason why you were put on that diet."
She opened her eyes and looked at him. "Has it occurred to you that my stomach can't handle a sudden diet like that? I'm not used to eating meat all the time. On top of that, I'm getting sick sometimes. So, just drop it."
"I'm sorry," he said.
"Are you going to let me sleep now?"
