In her corner
Natasha Romanoff had always been in Clarke Griffin's corner. Always.
People in one's group of friends didn't automatically mean that they were in that person's corner. It was an unfortunate fact, but it was still an important fact to be aware of.
Natasha knew that so many people Clarke had trusted, had not been in her corner. So many.
Natasha would always be in Clarke's corner. Always.
Clarke didn't understand it when Natasha had sided with Ross and Tony, over Steve Rogers when the Accords were presented to them by Ross, but Natasha did it specifically for Clarke Griffin, for Natasha Romanoff's romantic partner soulmate and beloved wife.
Clarke believed that Natasha had chosen Ross not just over Steve, but over her. Over Natasha's wife and romantic partner soulmate.
So, when Natasha looked at Clarke Griffin and Steve Rogers across the room, and had told Tony that she had agreed with him, swallowing the words that she felt like she should warn him with, that even if she could see the common sense of siding with the Accords, that she thought this was a seriously bad idea, she looked at both Clarke and Steve, looked at the two of them-one of them, her darling wife, and the other, what she knew of as an older brother.
She was sure that Steve would understand.
But just by looking at Clarke, she knew that her wife, would not.
Perhaps Clarke never would understand.
Natasha understood at that moment that Clarke saw this as a betrayal. A great betrayal.
Natasha could see the hurt and wounded look within those bright, sky-blue eyes. Clarke's head lifted as she sat next to Steve, eyes glued to Natasha, a look of utter betrayal in those beautiful, soft eyes.
Natasha looked at her, knowing that Clarke was the one who would not understand. She sent every mental thought towards Clarke, hoping the younger woman could read the pleading in her wife's eyes.
(I'm sorry,) Natasha tried to convey, (I'm doing this because I love you, I swear.)
This wasn't out of some altruistic desire like Tony or Steve seemed to hold.
For Natasha? This wasn't about ideals. This was about a selfish matter. She wanted to keep her family together.
Natasha had sided with the Accords, because she viewed it as siding with her family. Keeping their family together.
Because Natasha knew what it was like to be torn from one's family. The scars that were left on her heart, when Alexei and Melina had given her and Yelena up to Dreykov? They would always be there.
She wanted to stop another family she had from splitting apart.
No, she didn't think the Accords were a good idea. She had nothing against Tony, in fact she was worried about him, now that he had thrown everything he had into the Accords, because some part of it felt like it was going to come back to bite them in the ass. But she had agreed with the Accords because she wanted to keep all of them together.
And she wanted Clarke to be protected. To not be hunted like she had been for so many years.
Natasha sighed, seeing the anger begin to rise in Clarke's blue eyes, those same blue eyes flashing a dangerous red for just a second.
That told her all she needed to know. Clarke didn't understand. Or she just didn't want to understand.
Either way, Natasha knew that she would be getting a lot of earfuls for what she was about to do. Clarke would blame her. She understood that.
And she understood why.
That was alright.
Clarke felt like she was being abandoned again. Natasha understood that.
Natasha sighed, trying to focus then on the best way to go about this.
Natasha wasn't betraying Clarke. She was positive that Clarke would see this as a betrayal. But it wasn't a betrayal.
Natasha meant her no harm. Ever.
She just wanted to protect Clarke. That was all.
So, when it came time to sign the Accords, Natasha signed them, as she knew Tony Stark and James Rhodes would.
She had signed them, not to save the world or anything like that, or to betray Clarke as she was sure her wife believed she had. No. She had signed the Accords to protect Clarke.
She had signed them to give Clarke support. For one of Clarke Griffin and Wanheda's romantic partner soulmates and wife to have governmental protection and sanctions.
Clarke might not have understood this, but that was why Natasha did it.
Yes, Natasha knew that Clarke had many other familial soulmates and many other romantic partner soulmates in different groups. The Justice League, the X-Men and other groups.
No, she didn't know what they were doing or how they were reacting to Ross's ultimatum. But she knew that if none of them were signing the Accords, one of them needed to. For Clarke.
When the two groups faced off-Tony Stark, James Rhodes, Black Panther-T'Challa and Natasha herself, went against the Maximoff twins, Wells Jaha, Steve Rogers, Thor, Clarke Griffin, Ant-Man and Clint Barton, Natasha looked at Clarke's eyes and pleaded that the younger woman would forgive her and would one day understand why she did this.
Clarke had sneered at her that it was Natasha herself who should try forgiving after what she and Steve did to them and that was when the second wave of Steve's team, which consisted of Bucky, Sam Wilson-the Falcon, Spiderman and the Hulk came rushing in.
Even after all the devastation Clarke and the others did to them and went off as fugitives, wanted by the law, Natasha desperately hoped that Clarke understood.
That she had only signed the Accords because she had been trying to protect Clarke. That she was just trying to be in Clarke's corner like she always was.
