Forced Alliance

Sun Jian sighed as he considered all the changes that had come lately, it was now 191 AD and as Sun Jian predicted, the coalition fell apart after it was realized they'd failed in their goal. Worse one of the coalition leaders killed another and that was it for Yuan Shao who quickly had everybody disband and so they all returned to their own domains while Dong Zhuo was still in power in his new capital of Changan, the Emperor still under his thumb and now the chaos of the land continued unabated and was no getting worse. Sun Jian, for his part, was still nursing his grudge against Liu Biao and wishing to find some excuse to attack him, luckily Sun Ce and Cheng Pu had recovered from their injuries and the army was back to full strength while peace and order returned to Changsha.

'It seems our united purpose to destroy Dong Zhuo and rescue the Emperor has been forgotten in favour of the various lords fighting amongst themselves for land and power.' Sun Jian reflected sadly.

Indeed that seemed to be the case, especially when Yuan Shao, who originally only held Ye in Ji Province, managed to trick Han Fu into handing over power to him and now Yuan Shao controlled all of Ji Province and this had sparked a feud between him and his own family member, Yuan Shu, Lord of Shouchun in the southern areas of Yu Province.

Both men were not planning to back down and it was clear they were determined to prove once and for all who was the true leader of the Yuan Family. They dragged in allies they had made too with Yuan Shao being allied with Liu Biao and also ensuring that his underling, Cao-Cao, was also ready to fight, having been set up in Xuchang in Yu Province to directly stand against Yuan Shu. Yuan Shu's ally was Gongsun Zan in You Province, directly North of Yuan Shao and so Yuan Shu had Gongsun Zan stand against Yuan Shao while he faced Cao-Cao, however this left him vulnerable to Liu Bei. Meanwhile Yuan Shao and Gongsun Zan had met in battle at Jieqiao, during which time Gongsun Zan acquired the services of a powerful warrior known as Zhao Yun. Then Dong Zhuo stepped in using his 'Imperial Authority' to order both men to stand down. They agreed but this only meant that they were now engaged in a cold war, meanwhile Cao-Cao and Yuan Shu would skirmish while Liu Biao was building up his forces to prepare to attack Yuan Shu. This brought Sun Jian up to the present in his thoughts and left him musing as to what he should do next.

"Father!" The voice of his second son, Sun Quan burst out as the young man burst into the room at that point.

Sun Jian stood. "Quan, what's wrong?"

Sun Quan straightened up. "It's, we're surrounded, Yuan Shu has surrounded Changsha!"

"What?!"

With that he quickly hurried to the walls, accompanied by Quan.

Reaching the walls he stood and looked around, they were indeed surrounded by Yuan Shu's forces and indeed, Yuan Shu himself was there too.

"This is." Sun Ce snarled. "He thinks he can get away with this!?"

Sun Jian shook his head. "Calm down, Ce. Let's not waste time fighting if we don't need to."

While the rest of his officers were startled and tried to dissuade him, Sun Jian insisted on going out alone to talk to Yuan Shu and try to negotiate, they were left to watch fearfully while Sun Jian went to do just that. There was shock and whispers from Yuan Shu's men, Yuan Shu narrowed his eyes as he watched Sun Jian. Sun Jian meanwhile kept calm and walked carefully towards where Yuan Shu was seated on his horse.

"Lord Yuan Shu." Sun Jian greeted the man, bowing to him. "What brings you all the way here and with so many troops, I do not believe I have wronged you in anyway, why do you insist on attacking us?"

"You forget your place, Sun Jian, show me the proper respect." The haughty man snapped. "I am here to ensure you remember that YOU serve me and should be following my orders, I have sent you three order missives so far and you haven't done anything yet!"

Sun Jian bowed again. "Apologies, Lord Yuan Shu, but we have not received any such missives, it is entirely possible your messengers are being ambushed and killed."

"Arg, I should've guessed." Yuan Shu grumbled. "Now listen here, I am dealing with that upstart Cao-Cao and Gongsun Zan will deal with Yuan Shao in time. But you are to keep that Liu Biao off my back, understand."

Of all of Sun Jian's possible reactions to this, Yuan Shu did not expect him to suddenly burst out laughing.

Finally composing himself, Sun Jian smirked.

"Lord Yuan Shu, you brought an army here to order me to attack Liu Biao? All you had to do was ask, I've been eager to get revenge on that fool for a long time." Sun Jian explained.

Yuan Shu was startled by this and stumbled over his words, but quickly recovered. "Well, that's fine, get to it then. Everyone let's go, it's time to deal with Cao-Cao."
With that, sure enough, Yuan Shu and his army left while Sun Jian returned to his castle and brought all his retainers together and revealed what Yuan Shu had wanted.

"Hmmm...I don't like this, My Lord." Cheng Pu grumbled. "It's too obvious that Yuan Shu is simply trying to sacrifice us for his own gain."
Han Dang sighed heavily. "Cheng Pu is right, we are vastly outnumbered by Liu Biao, unlike anyone else involved in this three way war, they're all even with their opponents".

"Be that as it may, it's our chance to get revenge on Liu Biao for what he did to us, Lord Cheng Pu." Sun Ce cut in.

"I agree." Sun Jian said at last. "I was wanting to attack Liu Biao for some time and Yuan Shu has finally given me the perfect excuse."

So Sun Jian began working with Cheng Pu, Han Dang, Huang Gai, Zhu Zhi, Ce, Quan who was going to be taking part in his first battle and Sun Jian's brother Sun Jing, determining their plans to fight against Liu Biao.
