"Good afternoon, Rayna."
Rayne looked up from her desk. "Hi Sabé. Thanks for coming to see me on such short notice."
"Always a pleasure." Sabé took a seat on the opposite side of the desk. "How may I be of help?"
Rayna punched a few keys on her console and brought up a holographic image of some forested area. "Do you know anything about this area of Gungan-owned swamp? It's about sixty kilometers northwest of Theed."
"Perhaps. Zoom out a bit?" The image changed to reveal a small river along the edge of the forest and rolling grasslands to the south. "What seems to be the issue?"
"I got a call from a Gungan security officer yesterday morning. Not from the Chief's office; just a regular officer. He said they had lost contact with a two person patrol and asked if we could send a droid patrol out that way. I thought it was an odd way to make that kind of a request, but it was no problem, so I said sure. Apparently, within about twenty minutes of the droids getting into the forested area, we lost contact. I tried to call the officer back, but couldn't get a hold of him, so I called the Chief's office. He apologized profusely for the loss of my droids and said the officer had spoken out of turn and had not been authorized to make the request. He insisted it was no concern of mine and apologized for wasting my time."
"Curious."
"I had one of our orbital scanners do a five-second diversion on it last night." She punched a few more keys and the image zoomed out further and added a red glow to the swamp area. "It picked up some energy emissions that look like they are coming from underground in that area. I didn't want to risk scanning any deeper without a good reason. I couldn't find any records of historical activity in that area. But the whole thing seemed off. Underground isn't Gungan style."
"Indeed not. I remember that area now. During the Clone Wars, there was a discovery of an underground facility the Separatists were using as a bio-weapons lab. The Empire wiped out all the records later."
"A bio-weapons lab!? What were they making?"
"They were trying to resurrect the Blue Shadow Virus, and make it airborne. It was originally a waterborne virus. They succeeded too, as I recall. I wasn't actually involved. Padmé was. With the help of three Jedi. You get one guess who one of them was."
"Uh huh."
"After the immediate risk was resolved, the virus was cleared from the facility and it was sealed off. The Empire wiped all our records of the location and incident. I never heard of them using the facility; and I feel like I would have if they had been. After the Empire pulled out, I brought up getting it extracted. Almost nobody even remembered it. The Gungans eventually decided it would disrupt the swamps too much to dig it out, so we left it at that."
Rayna shook her head. "How would they have built that without anyone knowing?"
"Oh, I'm sure the Separatists didn't build it," Sabé said. "I'm certainly no expert on the Force, but if I had to guess, I'd say Palpatine had it built while he was Senator."
"But, without anyone knowing?" Rayna asked again.
Sabé shrugged. "Apparently he had a super star destroyer buried under Coruscant without anyone knowing. I'm sure hiding a bio-weapons facility under a swamp was hardly taxing for him."
"So, what should I do?" Rayna asked. "It seems wrong to just let it go. Is it a Jedi issue? Who would I even contact for that?"
Sabé leaned back in her chair and frowned. "No… No, I don't think it is. I certainly wouldn't contact Luke about it, Especially if it's nothing. He's earned his retirement."
"Agreed."
"Perhaps try one of your contacts at the NRDI. Maybe they have some stealthier scanning toys they can let you borrow."
"Okay, I'll try that"
"Excellent. May I do anything else for you today?"
"No, thank you Sabé. Perfect as always."
"Very good." Sabé got up to leave and turned back at the door. "And, do let me know what you find out, will you?"
"Will do."
Thank you dear. Always a pleasure."
Rayna scrolled through her list of contacts at the NRDI headquarters. It was around midnight on Coruscant so her usual liaison officer wouldn't be in for another six or seven hours. She didn't want to wait that long, so she pulled out the watch desk number and keyed it into her console. She took a sip of coffee while it connected.
"NRDI Watch Desk, this is Assistant Director Iella Wessiri. How can I help you?"
Rayna paused to double check the number she keyed in. "Oh, uh, Director Wessiri. This is the Watch Desk, isn't it?"
"Yes, sorry, I'm filling in for the usual watch officer this evening. How can I help you?"
"I'm Director Rayna N'Callah, of the Naboo Intelligence and Security Directorate. I was hoping to get some quick assistance on an orbital scanning issue I'm having."
There was a long pause on the other. Rayna checked that the connection was still live. "Hel -"
"That's a name I've heard recently," Iella said. "Not as Security Director though."
"Ah, yes. Security Manager is a legitimate role of mine. I try to keep that the public-facing one. Your husband and his friends aren't the only ones who don't know."
"Smart. Even if they were the only ones who didn't know, I'd think it was smart. They aren't really spy types."
"Yeah, I got that impression."
"Thank you for looking out for them."
"Oh, it's been my pleasure. They are quite wonderful. Everyone here adores them. Especially Sabé."
"I don't suppose you know what they were doing that required them to need the hospital on Naboo?"
Rayna shook her head. "Sorry, I don't. They were rather tight-lipped about that. I did get a chance to look at their shuttle sensor logs though. It looked like they took some evasive maneuvering as they came off Karrashda, then took two short jumps before the longer one to Naboo. Like they were trying to avoid being followed. But there was no physical evidence of them having been shot at or chased."
"So they weren't followed?"
"Not that I could tell. And Sabé asked me to look for that specifically. As she put it, they aren't the kinds of people who get into normal kinds of trouble."
"She ain't wrong." Iella let out a breath. "Well, thank you again for looking after them. But, you called here for something that clearly wasn't this. How can I help you? And orbital scanning issue, you said?"
"Oh, yes." Rayna had nearly forgotten why she called. She explained what happened with the Gungans and the lost droids. "It doesn't feel right to just let it go. Sabé said she didn't think it was a Jedi issue, despite the history of the location and suggested I call the NRDI for any better scanning tools you have that the Gungans wouldn't know about."
Iella nodded. "I think I can do you one better. I'm sending you the secure number to Yavin. Brianna Skywalker - Luke's daughter - has been working with me on a project that might have some relevance here. She's also a keen student of her family history, so she's likely familiar with the Clone Wars incident."
"Great, I'll give her a call."
"Just so you know," Iella said, "she's a bit… different."
Rayna nodded. "That's what I've heard Luke say about her."
"Just… whatever expectations you have about what Jedi are supposed to be like, just, forget that. If she's not there - she had been visiting her sister and I don't know when she was supposed to return - just give me a call back at my direct line and I'll work something else out for you."
"Sounds good. And it was nice to finally meet you."
"Likewise. Good luck."
Rayna ended the call and started putting in the new number. Every time she had heard Luke comment about his daughter being 'different,' he always had a hint of a sly smile on his face. And the comment always elicited an eye-roll from Wedge and a small fit of giggles from the other three. Still, couldn't be that bad. She took a sip of coffee while she waited for the line to connect.
A hologram of a woman resolved on the other end of the line. She didn't look that much younger than Rayna. Rayna started to introduce herself when she got cut off.
"Go for Papa Palpatine's Sandwich Delivery Service. How may I take your order?"
Ryana squinted at the number to make sure it was the right one. Ignore expectations. "I'm looking for Brianna Skywalker."
A pause. "At a sandwich delivery service?"
Rayna leaned forward. "I got this number from NRDI Assistant Director Iella Wessiri."
The other woman scrunched up her face and groaned. "I swear, every time that woman has a new idea I get more work." She looked off to the side. "Who is this, anyway?"
"I'm Rayna N'Callah, Naboo Director of Security and Intelligence."
"This is a Naboo number?"
"Yes, it is."
"Oh. I guess I'll save it then." She started pressing some buttons, presumably saving the number to some local directory. "I thought you were the Guest House security manager."
"That's my public-facing role."
"Ah. Smart." She finished fiddling with buttons and leaned back in her chair. "So, what's Boss Lady's genius idea this time?"
"We have an underground facility in some Gungan swamp lands. Apparently it used to be a bio-weapons facility during the Clone Wars -"
"Ooh, Blue Shadow Virus."
"So you are familiar with it?"
"Heck yeah, that was a good two-parter."
Rayna pushed forward. "We have reason to believe it might be active again. Not necessarily as a bio-weapons facility, but Director Wessiri thought you'd be interested in having a look -"
"Heck yeah I wanna look, that sounds cool and fun."
"Um, great, so -"
"Can I come now?"
"Sure, if you're available -"
"Can I bring a couple of friends?"
"I - yeah, sure."
"Great, we'll leave now."
"Um, when you get into the system, just call this number back and I'll direct you where to land, so you can avoid the port."
"Sounds fabulous. Thank you for placing your sandwich order, your delivery will be made shortly."
The call disconnected and the hologram disappeared, leaving Rayna staring at her incoming mail. She wasn't sure what the right adjective was, but it definitely wasn't 'different.'
The image of the Naboo security office disappeared, leaving Brianna looking at her lightsaber training schedule once again. She blew a raspberry at it. She had been off Yavin more than on in the past year, forcing her to turn lightsaber training over to a senior student. The difference was noticeable, and not in a good way. Especially now since that she needed to find some marginally competent Force users with an interest and aptitude for spy stuff. Still, a quick trip to Naboo might be fun for a few minutes.
Brianna crossed the control room and poked her head into one of the side conference rooms where Elena and R2 were busy finalizing the details for their first formal run of hide and seek training. She didn't really want to interrupt them either, but if this turned out to be nothing, she was going to want someone to hang out with; and if this turned out to be something, she was going to need backup. "Hey. You two wanna take a swing by Naboo?"
R2 started twittering and tweeting, as he rocked side to side.
Brianna grinned. "Yeah, that's what I thought. Pack your bags, folks! We're goin' on a trip."
