The Dark Among Us Episode 2 Smoke and Mirrors Prologue

A Sad New Day

Time felt like it was in slow motion for Mephiles as he was looking down on the head of Blaze, his friend and crush. He didn't know what to think or feel.

"Mr. Dark!" A female voice said firmly

Mephiles snaps out of it and looks around, he was in a small room with a large window and a door, sitting across from him was a human woman in a blue Chinese like dress known as Chun Li, on the table in front of Mephiles was a photo of Blaze's head. Chun Li pulls it away

Upper West Side Precinct, The Following Afternoon

Mephiles now remembers he is in a Police interrogation room, he was brought here when the police grabbed him for crossing the police tape and now the detective Chun Li here was questioning him

"You're making this more difficult than it has to be." Chun Li told him. "If you'd just corporate and answer the questions, you can go home. Maybe get some sleep" Mephiles lights up a Solaris cigarette.

Concerned Chun Li asked "How are you feeling? I know it's been a long night for you. You look like you could use some rest."

"I'll be better when I find who did this…which I can't while sitting in here." Mephiles said holding in his anger.

"We all want the same thing here, Mephiles." Chun Li told him "Look… I know what you must be going through…Really I do…but I could use your cooperation."

Mephiles says nothing and instead smokes nothing he can think of to say would be good to say.

"That's very helpful. Thank you" Chun Li said to that a bit annoyed. She writes down in her notes and looks to the window where another detective and a cop were watching and listening in.

It was silent for a while then Mephiles hears a wailing noise and looks to Chun Li and see she is getting a nosebleed and Chun Li notices as well as she wipes the spot and gasps. Mephiles asked "Are you….okay? You don't look so good." He got no response "Detective Li?"

"I'm Detective Li." Chun Li just said.

"Uh, yeah. I know… I just said that. Is there something…" Mephiles said getting concerned.

Chun Li looks around and asked "Do you hear that?" She then grunts in pain holding her head "Please….please…" She grunts more in pain as the noise gets more intense. Mephiles hears banging thud come from the window as the detective and cop in it go unconscious. Chun Li stands and said "I'm sorry, just…make it stop…please…" She then passes out.

Mephiles looked horrified as he was the only one awakes here unaffected by whatever that noise was. Just then the door opens and in walks Jonathan Cran wearing his old Scarecrow mask and claw glove carrying a box labelled evidence. Mephiles figured fitting he dress as the master of fear with that display that happened.

"We have to go. Now!" Crane told him.

"Okay but what did you do to her?" Mephiles asked pointing to Chun Li. "I know it ain't fear toxin."

"She'll be fine." Crane said simply "It was just a memory wipe spell. Very expensive, but it works. The whole station will forget the last 24 hours and everything they saw at the Emeralds. Well hurry up!"

Mephiles finishes his cigarette and gets up to leave, but he stops and takes the photo of Blaze's head and leaves the station of unconscious Mundy Police with Crane.

A while later Mephiles was in Crane's care who, Crane who removed the mask to see better as he drives, both had been silent for a while. It was awkward for both as neither had a high opinion on the other and only interacted in short moments.

"Thanks for bailing me out." Mephiles said deciding to break the silence.

"Certainly." Crane said with a nod. He then added "We, uh, we found Para of the Paradox Brothers chained up to a post. That was your doing, correct?"

"Yeah, it was." Mephiles said nodding.

"Well I don't know why you detained him." Crane said with a sigh "Para was at the Spider's Nest when Blaze was left at the Emeralds, so he couldn't possibly be involved in this mayhem. Ganondorf's currently interrogating him…and he hasn't said anything useful. And Mephiles we have to tread carefully here. We can't implicate an innocent man, and people are already worried about your conduct. As of late."

"He's working for somebody, and whoever it is wants him snooping around every crime scene I've looked at." Mephiles explained.

"That doesn't mean they're involved in the murders." Crane told him. They drove in silence still stopped at a traffic light. He sighs and says "I know what you're thinking Mephiles. It's been one full night and a slice of morning, and I already miss her, too."

The light changes and Crane drives as he explained "You know, I never get more homesick than when one of us dies. And now…for it to be Blaze…I've never been good with these sorts of things, even when I was intentionally killing people in my villain days. I just can't believe this is really happening now."

"Yeah…it's hard." Mephiles said sadly.

Crane nods and sighs "Our stories used to be so simple. We had a beginning, middle, and an end. But ever since we moved to this awful city… everything's gotten so confused. Heroes have become bad people and villains have become the guardians of order like us. It's so messed up."

Crane thinks and asked "Did she, um, give any indication to what she was thinking…when you saw her last, I mean? I don't know why, but I'd like to know what she was…I guess fine, I suppose."

Mephiles thought about telling him about Blaze's concern with the system but held off on it and said sadly "She just told me to be careful."

"She was always fond of you, Mephiles." Crane said nodding.

"Yeah." Mephiles said sighing.

"I don't know what else to say, Mephiles. We have to… have to put an end to this." Crane said as he soon parks up outside the Emeralds "It's been two murders in as many days. If we don't unearth our culprit and soon, there will likely be another on our door step tonight."

"Too bad we can't get Batman to help." Mephiles jokes a bit.

"As ironic as it is for me to say, I would welcome his help, but he is away in a different city do it's down to you Sheriff." Crane said getting out the car.

"I'll get it done." Mephiles said getting out the car

"Please Mephiles, For Miss. Cat." Crane said nodding

"I got it!" Mephiles said and slams the door shut hard it cracks the car window a bit.

Crane seeing this, sighs and shakes his head.

Well it is a somber day but no time to mourn, Mephiles has a job to do, and he needs to find out who killed Blaze.
