Chapter 2

Hogwarts, it turned out, was a really large castle with wide, sweeping lawns, Of course you couldn't tell from the darkness, but Lucy could tell that the castle sat on ancient grounds. When they were led into a small room a much older woman told them all about the houses and the rules. Lucy didn't care anything for houses. She just wanted to make sure that she made her mother proud of her by making sure that a child with the worse luck in the world was protected.

When she left everyone started talking. Lucy tuned most of it out, allowing everyone to make pointless conversations that held no interest to her.

"Aren't you even interested in what house you might be in?" Hermione asked.

"No," Lucy answered.

"Hermione, let it go," Neville said. "If she doesn't care what house she'll be in, then that's her right."

Hermione turned her back on Lucy.

When Professor McGonagall came back she led the students into the Great Hall, which was lined with students setting at four long tables. The fifth table had the teachers and Lucy groaned. Oh this just was seven levels of embarrassing.

"Could someone just kill me," Lucy moaned to Harry.

"What's wrong?"

"My godmother's friend is here," she said. "That means he's going to tell everyone if I've done something wrong."

"Who?"

Lucy pointed to a man wearing long black robes with black hair and sullen skin. He waved, making Lucy wish that the ground would swallow her up.

"Don't tell me, afraid that he's going to share embarrassing things about you."

"You laugh, you die," Lucy said and he snickered. "He's Red Court."

"Red what?"

"Court. It means that he's a vampire," Lucy answered. "And my annoying shadow."

"Miss Dresden."

"Sorry," Lucy said and the sorting began.

One by one each student was sorted into their houses. When it was Lucy's turn she sat down and the hat was placed over her head.

"The Headmaster has told me to sort you, even though you don't have your powers yet."

"I have Winter Court powers."

"True, but not the kind of magic that you need to pass your lessons. Still, I understand how important that Dumbledore is treating this. So, I'm going to place you in your house."

Lucy waited and then, "GRYFFINDOR!"

The table cheered as the hat was taken off her head and she went over to sit with her new house. Soon all those that had been in the compartment with her, joined her. The only one not happy with the sorting was Hermione.

"I have a feeling that it's going to take a miracle to get Hermione to like you."

Lucy had a feeling that Neville was right.

After the sorting, the feast happened. Lucy had to admit that all the food looked really good. She watched Harry pile his plate full of food and started to eat. Lucy put a little on her plate, though the fact that Ron Weasley looked like a human black hole didn't make eating more encouraging.

"That has got to be illegal somewhere," Lucy said to Neville.

"Don't we all wish," he said.

"What's wrong with how I'm eating?" he asked, or at least Lucy thought that's what he said.

The potatoes showing themselves didn't help matters in translating.

"Ron, stop acting like a pig," an older boy said.

Ron glared at him and Lucy decided to turn her back so that she could eat without seeing the black hole doing its thing.

Once everyone was done with their food the Headmaster stood up. Everyone turned to hear what he had to say.

"Welcome back to another year at Hogwarts. I have a few notices to hand out. First of all, the Forbidden Forest is out-of-bounds to all students, our Caretaker, Mr. Filch, has asked me to remind you that no magic is to be done between classes in the hall, Quidditch trails will take place during the second week of term. Anyone interested in trying out for their house team should contact Madam Hooch. I would also like to add that we have a new exchange student joining us today.

"Miss Dresden, would you rise."

Lucy stood up and everyone looked at her.

"She has decided to join us instead of going to Ilvermorny. Their loss! Our gain! I would like all houses to make her feel welcome and to not make our school look bad. I would hate our sister school to be informed that Hogwarts isn't as respectable as they've been told."

He motioned Lucy to sit down and she did.

An hour later she was in bed, a completed letter on her table to her parents. Despite everything, she missed them. Christmas couldn't come fast enough for her. The next morning, she sent the letter through the Nevernever. She then showered, got dressed, and gathered what books she thought she would need.

"Why are you bringing your books?" Ron Weasley asked, making Fred Weasley roll his eyes at the question.

"Because I don't have time to collect them once we get our schedule," Lucy told him.

"Brother, give it a rest," Fred said. "If she wants to get her books, then she can."

As Lucy ate she saw Hermione walking in with about five books in her arms. She sat down, but said nothing to Lucy. She had a feeling that Hermione felt as though she had something to prove and she was going to prove that she was the best student. Of course her mother would probably say that if Hermione wanted to prove that she belonged, then she had the right to. Professor McGonagall came around with the time tables and, thankfully, she had the books for the three classes that she had.

"What's the point of Magical Theory?" Lucy asked Fred.

"So that you will understand the lessons," he answered. 'Though, the ravens love it."

"Well I think that Magical Theory is important," Hermione said, her bossy vice that Lucy knew wasn't going to make her any friends. "Don't you think?"

"No," Lucy answered.

"Oh and why is that the case?"

"Because knowing the theory isn't as important as mastering the skill. You can look up theories all you want, but they mean nothing when you have to actually cast."

"Well if Hogwarts didn't think it was important, they wouldn't of included it in our timetable."

Lucy had a feeling there was no talking to her.

The first class was Defense Against the Dark Arts. Lucy at once sensed that something just wasn't right with Professor Quirrell. Add to the fact that he said things in a way that made it hard to understand and Lucy had a feeling it was going to be a long year. After that was Magical Theory. Lucy decided to stay as far away from Hermione as she could. That girl really needed to stop thinking that books held all the answers. Halfway through the lesson, Lucy raised her hand.

"Yes, Miss Dresden."

"Is it true that you need will, and focus, to make spells work."

Lucy saw Hermione rolling her eyes.

"Yes, you do," Professor Spineheart answered, which shocked Hermione. "However, understanding the theory is just as important."

Hermione smirked.

"My father said that's not the case," Lucy said.

"Learning the theory might not have worked for him, but it's the foundation of magical practice."

"So if you don't learn the theory, you can't cast."

"Correct," she said.

"Someone needs to listen to actual Professors," Hermione said, which made several students glare at her.

Lucy decided to put Hermione in her place and prove the Professor wrong at the same time.

As the Professor continued the lesson Lucy took out a small, plastic, bear. It was something that her mother had given her. She used the mantel to form her will, and intent, and put it on the floor. The bear started to move away from her and towards Hermione. As it moved the bear started to get bigger and bigger, until everyone screamed and got out of their seats.

"I think I made my point," Lucy told Hermione, smiling.

"She's a complete nightmare," Professor Spineheart told the Headmaster.

"And for what reason?"

"She thinks that she knows more than I do. And then she has to show off."

Dumbledore smiled at her and said, "Miss Dresden was taught differently than other students. However, I will state that she did make a good point."

"And what point is that?"

"You don't need to know the theory to understand how to do the spell. A delusion that has been fed for far too long."

Spineheart screamed, making Snape and Dumbledore cover their ears. She then stormed out.

"Sheesh, and I thought her godmother was dramatic," Snape remarked.

"Now I know I made the right choice," Dumbledore said, grinning. "Yes, I know that I have."

A/N: Oh we just have to love Lucy showing up Hermione. Well, that's before Hermione figured out that books weren't everything. Lucy and Hermione are going to be two lionesses, clawing for the top.
