Chapter 29 - Games Are Painful
Grand Magic Games, Stadium Arena
The second day of the Grand Magic Games was about to end. The only thing left was the final battle round between Kagura of Mermaid Heel and Yukino of Sabertooth. Kagura was no slouch and she was a very intense swordswoman like Erza while Yukino was a celestial spirit wizard like Lucy. Only unlike Lucy who had access to a variety of abilities, Yukino was like any ordinary wizard in her field. Making her physical combat abilities non-existent and her overall physique pretty useless.
However, upon meeting Kagura on the field, she made a bet like all the other competitors. Despite being serious and not wanting to participate in stupid demands initiated by Toby who wanted to know Kurohebi's true name. Kagura was seemingly interested in what her opponent suggested.
"I will bet my life and declare that the loser will lose their life." Yukino said, essentially declaring this to be a battle to the death.
Unfortunately for proctors, there was no rule against this apparently. They really needed to do a lot of revision before the next Grand Magic Games begins with how many unspoken rules are broken. Yet, this didn't stop Kagura.
"Very well, if you are willing to accept death as a sign of failure then your wager is accepted." Kagura said in the most serious voice she had.
With that, the battle began and Yukino called upon her celestial spirits to fight for her and Sabertooth as a whole.
At first, things looked like they were going towards Yukino's favor. By using two golden keys and summoning the twin fish, Pisces, and the wielder of the scales, Libra, to combat Kagura. Initially, Kagura seemed to have the skills to handle both celestial spirits with minor difficulty without so much as drawing her sword. That is until Libra used her power to manipulate gravity, forcing Kagura to almost collapse from the sheer force.
She then jumped as high as she could, but Libra did not release her hold on Kagura. Resulting in the young woman being sent crashing into one of the decorative statues surrounding the arena. By this point, many thought this would the point Sabertooth would redeem itself from their recent loss.
"Is this it? Has Kagura been defeated already?" Chapati Lola asked the crowd.
"It's looking bad! But it's also looking cool!" Jason exclaimed as he was today's guest announcer.
However, Kagura revealed her own secret in the form of Libra encountering the same magic she uses. Libra quickly found herself struggling to stay standing as the gravitational pull of the earth was now working against her.
"What is happening?" Libra asked herself as she looked shocked.
Soon enough, Pisces felt the same amount of pressure being pressed against them. In little to no time, Pisces lost their strength and subsequently fell to the earth and landed right on top of Libra. Feeling so much pressure added with the pain of a giant fish on top of her, Libra was too hurt to continue. Despite Yukino's reserved and seemingly arrogant personality, she knew when her celestial spirits were done.
"Pisces, Libra, you may now return." Yukino said as her spirits left the battlefield. "I did not want it to come to this, but here we are." she said.
Kagura landed onto the ground and prepared to strike Yukino. Despite Yukino's confidence in winning the fight, she never expected Kagura to use gravity magic as well. Perhaps to a greater extent than Libra, but then again, it's not as if Libra was preventing her from using magic just limiting her mobility.
Yukino then pulled out a third golden key with a black coil wrapped around it, "I will now open the thirteenth zodiac key." she said.
"The thirteenth zodiac key?" Kagura asked with a confused look.
"You were unfortunate to face a member of Sabertooth today." Yukino told her.
"I do not believe in such things, so I did not need them in life." Kagura said before charging Yukino. "Everything that happens are the result of my choices. Not some nonsense like fate." she added.
Yukino then raised up her mystery key, "Open: Gate of the Snake Charmer. Ophiuchus." She called out.
The entire arena was then consumed by darkness as a gigantic black snake had towered over Kagura. The massive serpent was bigger than Pisces and looked at Kagura as if she were prey. At the same time, Lucy could hear some of her Egyptian servants trying to compare Ophiuchus to Ophis, the God of Darkness and enemy of the Sun God, Ra. The same snake that is believed to have caused eclipses as a sign of the god successfully devouring Ra before being forced to vomit him out.
However, Kagura stood her ground and with all of her strength. She cut down the massive celestial spirit without drawing her sword.
"Style of the Undrawn Long Sword." Kagura said before Opiuchus was split in half, surprising everyone. Including Yukino who was paralyzed from shock, "Your bet was ill conceived." She said before aiming for Kagura.
However, Kagura was the one who became overconfident as she expected this to be finished with one more strike. Just as light returned to the world, Kagura was stopped by Yukino's sudden appearance change. With a black veil held by a crown and black and blue dress replacing Yukino's large feather coat. Kagura's attack was blocked by a massive staff before causing her to jump back.
"I believe my bet was worth it." Yukino said before unleashing powerful blast at Kagura.
Kagura shook away the surprise she felt in Yukino's new attack. Avoiding several blasts of magical energy that created small craters on the ground where she stood. Forcing Kagura into the defensive as Yukino displayed a new set of abilities.
With Lucy
Lucy was studying Yukino closely as she felt suspicious of the girl. Something told her that while Sabertooth were the reigning champions in the past years since the Grand Magic Games were formed. It wasn't from foreign powers and it's unlikely that Ventus made that class card. Especially since the boy doesn't have one for Morgan Le Fay.
"Lucy, is Yukino working for the bad guys?" Happy asked.
"I don't know happy. Laxus got his hands on class cards too, but he wasn't purposely trying to be a dark mage." Lucy explained.
"You don't think they could be working with that man who worked with Jellal in the past, do you?" Erza asked suspiciously.
It's already obvious as to where most rogue heroic spirits and class cards come from. Lucy was suspicious of how Yukino obtained the class card and didn't want to accuse Sabertooth of working with Mateus. Then again, Master Jiemma looks like someone who doesn't accept failure and wants to win no matter what. The guild may be honest, but they aren't the kindest and most fair like the other guilds.
So there's no doubt in Lucy's mind that someone working for Mateus tempted them. Although Lucy wasn't fully aware of Jiemma's pride and stubbornness, so something would have motivated him into accepting free power. Free power is one thing, but admitting to being weak or inadequate is a whole other thing.
"At best, all I can say is there's someone working between the two parties." Lucy answered. "Like I said earlier, even Laxus had those cards but didn't know about Mateus." She said.
"Hey, weren't those cards faulty? I thought they were weaker than Ven's." Gray asked.
"They are normally faulty, but there's no telling how much they've improved in the past seven years since we disappeared." Lucy responded.
"Damn, then we're probably going to see that emperor guy come back." Gray said with the shake of his head.
"Whatever, I couldn't hit him last time but I'm beating him up when we meet again. Not even he's stopping us from winning the games." Natsu said with determination in his voice.
As the fight continued in the arena, Yukino was suddenly surrounded by an intense amount of blue electricity.
"What the heck happened now?" Natsu asked.
"Maybe those fake class cards are still faulty." Lucy said as she felt concerned for Yukino.
Back to the fight
As Kagura struggled to deal a real blow to Yukino. She noticed her opponent being struck by the strange electricity. Kagura and Yukino were left unaware of what class cards are. Kagura then realized that Yukino had poor control of her new abilities and tried to capitalize on that.
Kagura tried using her gravity magic to keep Yukino in place as she was being electrocuted. As her magic calmed down, Yukino tried breaking free of the spell. Only to raise up her weapon as she struggled to block Kagura's rapid strikes. By this point, Kagura herself had considered removing her sword from it's sheath by how intense Yukino's attacks have been.
"I admit, you are unpredictable but your flex of power is not enough. Do not forget your own wager." Kagura said before avoiding another blast aimed for her head. "Not only do I deny fate's existence. I do not break the promises I make." She said, finally revealing her sword.
With one more slash, Kagura's sword clashed against Yukino's staff. The swordswoman stood her ground as she put pressure onto Yukino. Who already looked exhausted as her body was fighting against the gravity magic as well as Kagura's pressure. There's also the fact that the unstable class card was rapidly draining her of her magic and vitality.
'I admit, she is not so pathetic, but I will not lose to someone lacking in discipline.' Kagura thought as she broke Yukino's guard.
By this point, Yukino's body couldn't handle the heavy toll she was taking on. With a quick strike, Kagura delivered a quick but non-lethal strike towards Yukino. The blue haired girl's transformation broke apart and revealed a big slash across her chest as her coat was destroyed. Most of the crowd thought Kagura had actually killed her but those with experience in swordsmanship like Erza could tell how much Kagura had held back.
After Yukino collapsed, she let out a sigh as she attempted to breathe. Her class card had timed out due to her lack of energy and Kagura stopped using her gravity magic. When she rolled onto her back to reveal her healthy appearance, Kagura pointed her sword at Yukino, looking ready to kill her much to Yukino's fear.
"You made the wager, remember?" Kagura asked, scaring Yukino. Only to sheathe her blade, "I will break it only once, because you yourself were not prepared to forfeit your life." she said as she left the battlefield.
"Would you look at that! Kagura has broken off the wager and spared Yukino!" Lola announced.
"I don't care if people say being merciful is weak, Kagura was so cool!" Jason exclaimed.
"Yes, yes, this just shows that some youngsters bit off more than they can choose. I hope Yukino-chan can learn from this battle." Yajima said.
Yukino stayed on the ground for a while, feeling pathetic. Even with a brand new power that amplified her strength, she felt pathetic for failing to utilize it to it's true potential. She couldn't see it, but Jiemma was very angry and disappointed in the girl. No doubt planning some horrid punishment for her and Sting for failing the guild today.
Meanwhile, Lucy really wanted to know more about how Yukino obtained that card. Even if Yukino was overconfident in her ability to take on Kagura. She didn't see Yukino as someone cocky or willing take on dangerous powers like that unstable class card.
Later that night
Lucy brought up the topic of the class card again while having dinner at a restaurant. Of course, Natsu's focus was on eating lots of food with Happy. Not letting him focus on the topic or even caring that much for now.
"You're being paranoid, Luce." Natsu told her. "By now, they're probably selling those cards like they do with regular trading cards." he said.
"Aye! They're probably going to start selling trading cards of wizards soon too!" Happy said.
Natsu laughed at the idea, "I mean, I wouldn't mind a badass card with me on the cover, but that sounds like the old man's thing." He said. "I bet the old man would sell our rights or whatever to make some cash." he said.
"Well, that doesn't sound like a bad idea from an economic standpoint." Lucy said before getting back to the topic. "But this is serious, I feel like Jellal's group was onto something. Whether or not Zeref or some cult worshipping him is involved, there's something working in the background." she said.
"Luce, don't worry about it. We deal with this stuff al of the time, remember?" Natsu asked.
"Aye! Remember?" Happy asked, mocking Lucy.
"And when we do, we're dealing with a catastrophe. Not something small like a bunch of Vulcans or a minor dark guild." Lucy responded before noticing something out the window.
Actually, it was someone and that person was Yukino. She was walking down the streets of Crocus in an entirely different outfit with a suitcase. Natsu noticed this too and also felt curious about why Sabertooth's celestial spirit mage was traveling by herself this late at night.
Lucy immediately looked around for a waiter, "Can I get the check, please?" She asked. She then saw Natsu stuffing his face quickly, "And a bag for the leftovers?" she asked.
A few minutes later
After paying the bill and grabbing the leftovers, Lucy and Natsu decided to follow Yukino. To their surprise, she was making her way towards the lodging where Fairy Tail stayed. It didn't make sense as the guild hall for Sabertooth was here in the capital. In fact, their guild hall was pretty big to the point it might as well have been a mansion. So why was Yukino heading to their hotel?
"Yukino-san!" Lucy called out.
Yukino turned around, "Hello Lucy-san, may we talk inside?" she asked, sounding calm as usual.
"Sure." Lucy said, wondering why Yukino was looking for her.
Inside
Once inside, Lucy had summoned Virgo to prepare tea for Yukino. Arthur also appeared to quickly take away the masochistic celestial spirit before she could say anything inappropriate. Leaving Lucy and Yukino to get straight to business.
"So what brings you here?" Lucy asked.
Yukino pulled out a small case, "Lucy-san, as of tonight and with my defeat by Kagura's hands. I'm no longer a member of Sabertooth." she said.
This shocked Lucy and Natsu, "You quit your guild for losing?" The dragon slayer asked.
Yukino shook her head, "No, not all. Master Jiemma was disappointed in my failure and decided to kick me out." she answered.
"Sting too?" Natsu asked.
"No, Sting may have lost but he's more valuable due to his strength. In fact, I'm not even one of the strongest members of the guild, I was covering for another member, Minerva." Yukino explained. "In fact, because of the bet I've made with Kagura and because I was spared. I only further embarrassed the guild." She added.
"Well, you made the bet so it's your fault for making a dumb bet." Happy said.
"Eat this corn, Happy." Lucy said as she shoved raw corn into Happy's mouth.
With the cat forcefully silenced and struggling to remove the corn out of his mouth. Lucy allowed Yukino to continue telling her story. Which only further angered Natsu as he thought Jiemma and the rest of Sabertooth were being unfair jerks.
"So now, I have to leave the city but before I do that. I wish to give you my remaining keys, Lucy-san." Yukino said as she tried holding back her tears. "I think they would do better by your side." she said as she extended her hands.
Lucy was shocked by Yukino's decision. Even if she used her heroic spirits the most, she still saw her keys as companions and friends. They were virtually a second family to her as was Fairy Tail. Once the shock was gone, Lucy realized that Yukino is practically quitting being a mage by this point. Unless she had some other magic or really was detached from her spirits, early retirement sounds like Yukino's choice.
"It is said that the one who wields all 12 golden keys will open, "The Gateway That Changes The World.", and thus, you deserve them more." Yukino said.
Now Lucy felt skeptical, "Where did you hear that saying? It sounds foreign to me." she said, sounding confused.
Yukino shrugged, "It was merely an old legend. I don't know about the origin of the saying." she answered.
Lucy pushed the keys back into Yukino's, "I can't accept them Yukino, I won't sever your bond with your spirits." She said. "You don't deserve this punishment, it's unfair. Don't you dare think you're underserving of being a wizard anymore." she said, surprising Yukino.
"Lucy is right, you can't give up! Those jerks in Sabertooth practically bullied! Guilds are supposed to be like family!" Natsu yelled angrily.
"Aye! Sometimes there's always that one guy or gal that's a bit of a jerk, but at the end of the day, everyone's gotta have each other's back!" Happy said, agreeing with his partner.
"Who do those jerks think they are!? They have a bad day and they blame it on someone else!?" Natsu asked. "You know what? If they think it's your fault, then everyone in Sabertooth is a loser!" he exclaimed.
"No, it's not like that!" Yukino said, trying to defend her former guild.
"Natsu calm down." Lucy commanded before facing Yukino again. "Listen Yukino, Natsu is a bit more extreme but he does have a point. A guild who cuts off it's members for one bad day really isn't a guild. Had it been anyone else, you wouldn't be left without a home." She said in an attempt to cheer the girl up.
Fairy Tail was not full of saints and they do have their issues, but lots of other guilds are the same. From Blue Pegasus to Lamia Scale and all other guilds, everyone at least has the minimum amount of respect to where they can cooperate. Even the girls from Mermaid Heel have great respect and admiration for Kagura despite her cold demeanor.
These words alone made Yukino feel emotional and deep down, she knew other guilds were more fair. Before she realized it, Yukino lost her reserved personality and broke down into tears. As Lucy attempted to comfort her, Natsu felt a great rage build up inside of him.
It didn't matter to him if Yukino was a stranger from another guild. Natsu saw a girl who was kicked out of her home because of a group of proud wizards who can't handle losing. Without saying anything, Natsu ran out the door with Happy following him.
"Where are you going?" Lucy asked.
"I'm teaching a lesson in manners!" Natsu yelled as he ran out the door.
Where he bumped into Ventus, "Ow, Natsu! Did you get into another fight?" He asked.
"I'm looking for a fight, but not here." Natsu answered, confusing Ventus. "Ven, I need you to loan me a card. Any card will work." he said.
"I don't think that's a good idea." Ventus said, sounding skeptical.
Natsu proceeded to lift up Ventus and shake him repeatedly. The boy let out a sound of great discomfort before dropping a random class card. Natsu didn't think twice about what card it was and dropped Ventus before beginning his plan to attack Sabertooth to teach them a lesson.
"That can't be good." Ventus said.
Later, at the Sabertooth guild
As promised, Natsu was ready to deliver his own form of justice. He practically demolished the front door and destroyed the main lobby before knocking out a few members of Sabertooth. Moments later, he used one of them as a projectile to demolish a few more doors. Then he saw several key members of the guild along with Jiemma who looked annoyed.
"Are you the master of this dump?" Natsu asked.
"You must be very idiotic to break into my guild, Salamander." Jiemma said, unhappy with his unwanted guest. "You want a war with my guild before the games have ended?" he asked.
"You guys are going to pay for hurting Yukino!" Natsu replied.
Jiemma scoffed, "You're crying over that weakling? Did she ask someone else to fight her battles or was she asking for a handout when you felt pity?" he asked, further enraging Natsu.
"You're dead Salamander!" a random Sabertooth mage before charging right at Natsu.
For a man who valued strength over everything else. Jiemma's only success in preaching this ideal was making his wizards agree with his beliefs. Unfortunately for the random mages, their beliefs weren't enough as Natsu turned them into fodder. Not even putting much effort into his attack as he kicked the nameless Sabertooth wizard away.
Then came a few more nameless Sabertooth wizards who challenged Natsu. Like their comrade, they also fell with ease. Even worse, Natsu used his ability to conjure up a weapon from his flames in the form of a bo staff. It was pathetic considering that Natsu knew next to nothing about the weapon style and just swatted them away. Leaving most of the guild shocked by how dedicated Natsu is to attacking them, but Jiemma was still not impressed.
In fact, he was disappointed in his own guild for not dealing with a single intruder. Jiemma was no fool when it came to understanding the mindsets of Fairy Tail wizards, but he still saw them as weaklings with no sense of strategy. Just as Jiemma tried getting a more competent mage to deal with Natsu, Sting came rushing forward.
"I'll deal with him master!" Sting exclaimed.
"Don't engage him!" Jiemma commanded.
"I can do it! I can put this old man in his place!" Sting stated arrogantly.
Jiemma only felt more angry as Sting ignored his command as if it didn't matter. While Sting was one of his strongest members, he didn't want to waste his resources right away. Then again, Jiemma was no master tactician or anything like that so it's not as if he could tell who would win the fight right away.
However, while Sting and Rogue both had great power as Dragon Slayers while claiming to be more true to the name compared to Natsu, Gajeel and Wendy. They were still inexperienced kids who flexed their vast power and have yet to face a true challenge.
"I've been waiting for this! I'll show you a true Dragon Slayer's power!" Sting yelled as his fist was surrounded by light. "White Dragon's Iron Fist." He yelled as his fist collided with Natsu's face.
At first, the entire room was blinded by a flashing white light. Everyone could hear some destruction and saw the damage in the spot where Natsu stood. Everyone assumed Sting finally brought him down. However, they were all surprised to see Natsu still standing with a large mark on his forehead. The older boy looked like he was just hit in face with a ball.
"You're a True Dragon Slayer? Who decided that?" Natsu asked as he gripped Sting's arm. Sting attempted to punch him with the other arm but failed as it was caught, "You think being flashy and talking about being tough actually matters? Who decided that?" he asked.
By this point, Sting tried to gather up more energy and started radiating with more White Dragon Slayer Magic. Rogue was about to join in as well but Jiemma gave him a scary stare that told him to stay put.
"I'm strong because this is the power that kills dragons. White Drive!" Sting yelled as he amplified his power.
As strong as Sting had become with this ability. Natsu still stood his ground despite having a bit more difficulty holding Sting in place. However, Natsu would only add to Sting's reasons as to why he disappoints Jiemma. As he proceeded to rear his head back and smashed his forehead into Sting's, making him hit the ground hard.
"I didn't want to fight you, Sting. I wanted to fight Jiemma." Natsu said, shocking almost everyone in the guild. He then reared his head backwards, knocking out a man in a ninja suit, "I also don't want to fight loud guys in pajamas." He said, mocking the ninja name Dobengal.
"I think that's enough. There is no point in keeping up this needless battle." said a new voice belonging to a woman with way too much make up on her face.
"Minerva." Jiemma said to his daughter.
"I saw this mess and could not help but feel disappointed. Not only in our guild, but by Dragneel's pointless challenge." Minerva said as she moved to the center of the room.
Natsu wasn't going to give up fighting and was willing to fight Minerva too. Even with an impressive amount of strength, Natsu was going the wrong way by picking a fight. Especially since current circumstances would work against Natsu and Fairy Tail as a whole. Unlike with Phantom Lord, Sabertooth has legally done nothing wrong by kicking out Yukino.
Luckily for Natsu, instead of reporting Natsu and likely having him arrested. Minerva summoned Happy into her hands who was tied up. Maybe things were less lucky.
"Natsu, help!" Happy yelled.
"Give me back Happy!" Natsu yelled.
"I think we're the one holding all the cards now." Minerva said with a smirk.
Maybe Natsu would have had an easier time paying for damages in a court case.
"I can admit, you are quite strong, Natsu Dragneel. However, you've only faced the low level minions of this guild." Minerva said, mocking him. "You wasted your time coming here and are lucky that my father feels patient with you today. So I will give you this." she said, presenting her offer.
As Minerva spoke, Rogue pulled his fellow dragon slayer away from the floor. It was bad enough that Sting had been defeated easily despite amplifying himself. Now it looked like Minerva was going to chastise them for losing so easily.
"As disappointing as Sting just appeared, we ought to settle this in the Games. Sabertooth shouldn't sully itself with some backstage brawl." Minerva said.
"We'll settle it right here and now!" Natsu argued.
Minerva sighed, "Then I think you will be losing a member." she said, gesturing to Happy who is still tied up in her arms.
Natsu relented as he didn't want Happy to get hurt. Minerva smirked at his weakness and saw the opportunity in making him leave. While she would have loved seeing a Fairy Tail wizard be put in their place, Minerva had to keep up her guild's image. She would also enjoy embarrassing Fairy Tail during the tournament where the public would witness their defeat.
"Do you understand now? If you are truly wishing to avenge that weakling, then wait for the games." Minerva said.
"Fine! I'll kick your ass in public!" Natsu yelled.
"I was thinking the same thing, but much less vulgar." Minerva said before throwing Happy at Natsu.
"Natsu!" Happy yelled as Natsu caught him. "Natsu, I was so scared and that lady was covered in so much makeup and perfume, I felt like was cuddling an onion!" he cried.
"Let's go Happy." Natsu said as he left Sabertooth with the promise of beating them.
Not just for Yukino's honor, but because he thought these pompous wizards deserved to be humbled. At the same time, a stranger in a top hat carrying a suit case arrived at the guild just as Natsu left.
"I see the Salamander has given you trouble, Jiemma-dono." said the man.
"You're the man who gave me the card." Jiemma told the man.
"Yes I am, I can see you used my product. A shame about today's events though." the man said.
"Your tool was useless and it lead to our guild being losing." Jiemma said as his negative aura reached the man.
The man ignored the negative aura, "Forgive me for saying this, Jiemma-dono, but the cards also require a strong will. While Yukino-san proved to be a threat to that Mermaid Heel wizard, she was pretty weak to begin with." he explained. "A toddler with a hammer is a dangerous foe, but they are also a danger to themselves." he added.
"What are you playing at?" Jiemma asked, weary of the stranger.
The stranger snickered as he presented his suitcase, "More power, more opportunity. Of course, I think you may be more successful if you rely on your stronger wizards." he said.
"And how do I know your magic playing cards will not fail again?" Jiemma asked as the entire guildw as suspicious of this man.
"Father does have a point. You said it failed because Yukino was weak, but how do we know there is no manufacturing error?" Minerva asked.
"Last I checked, Kagura Mikazuchi is one of the strongest members of Mermaid Heel and she was forced to draw her sword. Even before then, those celestial spirits of Yukino's were quite powerful." the stranger explained.
"And what do you gain from this charity? Why not bother one of the other guilds?" Minerva asked.
It was safe to say that despite her arrogance. Minerva is possibly one of the most intelligent members of the guild. She didn't immediately trust a stranger giving away free power that could make anyone potentially match a wizard saint's power level.
"My uh... organization's president, as we call him, can only trust capable wizards with such power. In a world of magic, everyone wants to get stronger or have access to certain powers. That's without considering the need for recognition." the stranger explained. "So who would make a better candidate than the undefeated champions of the Grand Magic Games?" he asked.
Everyone was still suspicious, but Jiemma would make sure that the stranger wouldn't live another day if he screwed up. Minerva would also likely make sure she would find a way to reach the stranger if he tried to run away should the cards fail.
"You have a deal, for now." Jiemma said, making the stranger feel satisfied. "Yet, the moment these cards fail and we lose another round. Your organization will be missing one employee." he added.
"Duly noted, good sir. Now let's deal with the final touches of our deal." the stranger said before opening his suitcase.
Presenting only five class cards, but despite their appearances. They weren't entirely ordinary or useless upon being used. Five strong cards for five strong Sabertooth wizards.
The next day
The third day of the Grand Magic Games is here. Erza had volunteered to represent Fairy Tail Team A while Cana came out as an alternate for Fairy Tail Team B and also volunteered for the first round. The two women arrived at the center of the arena where they saw Mato waiting to give them instruction on today's challenge. Alongside them were Jura Neekis, Hibiki Lates, Nobarly, Orga, Obra and surprisingly, Erza's childhood friend, Millianna.
Millianna was hiding in plain sight the whole time as she was wearing a coat the covered her head and obscured her face. She had revealed herself to Erza last night while Lucy met with Yukino and Natsu had attacked Sabertooth. That night also ended with both girls punishing Natsu and reminding him to not attack random guilds where the law would work against them.
"Now that we are all here. Let's get started on the challenge. I promise you all, this may be one of the hardest challenges you may face, cabo." Mato said before a massive structure was summoned above the arena.
The audience and wizards were stunned by the sudden summoning of such a such architecture. It had the appearance of an old castle from some horror fiction novel and it gave the impression that something evil was dwelling inside. According to Mato, that may very well be the case.
"Inside are 100 monsters and the one who defeats the most will win, cabo." Mato said.
Some of the wizards groaned and wined as they weren't prepared for direct battle. Hibiki has skills that focused on tactics and support and Cana really didn't feel like fighting today as her skills were not as good as everyone else's. The rest such as Erza and Jura were more than ready as they were more combat oriented and thus better prepared for fighting these monsters. At least until Mato provided a twist.
"Now before you get excited, you can only go one at a time. The monsters range from different difficulties and graded by different letters. D-Class monsters are the weakest while S-Class is the strongest. Here's an example of a D-Class monster, cabo." Mato said as a holographic image showed a massive ant like creature that could destroy large stones.
Hibiki already felt useless as he had no ability to fight a creature of that caliber. Which only made him feel worse as it meant there are more monsters of higher difficulty were waiting for him. At the same time, Cana and a couple of others felt a lot less confident.
"Another important fact is that there is only one S-Class monster, but there is different number of monsters of each type. This is important because you will all pick how many monsters you wish to battle. However, the types of monsters will be shuffled with every turn, cabo." Mato explained.
"In other words, there's virtually no way to determine what we will get when our turns arrive." Hibiki said with despair.
"Exactly! Another detail, your score will be based on the difficulty level of monsters you defeat. However, you will immediately be ejected should you be defeated before finishing up your set, cabo." Mato explained before creating a raffle system for each competitor. "And our first lucky contestant is, Erza Scarlet!" he said.
As the crowd cheered, Erza made an outrageous decision.
"I will fight all 100." Erza said.
"Cabo?" Mato asked with a confused face.
"Is that legal?" Orga asked.
"Typical Erza." Cana snickered.
"You sound quite confident." Jura said with a nod.
"Um... are you sure?" Mato asked.
"Yes, I will fight all 100 and win." Erza said confidently.
Mato still looked concerned, "Okay, if you're that sure. Let the challenge begin." he said as some stairs came out from the castle.
With Ivan
Unknown to anyone, Ivan was already cheating and breaking a major rule of the Grand Magic Games. His guild only had five wizards which included himself, Alexei is a fictional wizard and is actually Ivan in disguise. While everyone could see the both of them, the Ivan everyone could see was usually an illusion that no would notice.
However, right now was a different story as Ivan's Alexei persona was the illusion. As the fake wizard was seen standing and watching Erza slaughter the monsters in the castle. Ivan was heading to a secluded area where Fairy Tail's sharpshooters would not be able to see him. Neither would the Archers that Lucy also set up to work as a back up plan should Bisca lose sight of him.
Once in the secluded area, Ivan was met by the man in the top hat who had met with Sabertooth.
"Having second thoughts on a trial run, Ivan-san?" the stranger asked.
"Perhaps I was a bit too hasty last time." Ivan said. "I apologize for my hostility. I've been on edge." he said.
"Yes, I can forgive your attempt at having be subdued so you can take my organization's product for yourself." the stranger said.
To make a long story short, Ivan was intrigued by the class cards but wasn't entirely sure if they were reliable. Still, Ivan isn't someone who is above testing dangerous magics on someone else. With a small showcasing of the class card's power via a holographic projection from the stranger. Ivan was ready to take the cards for himself after he made a poor attempt to negotiate.
However, he did witness Yukino's improved strength when she forced Kagura to get serious in battle. Although his faith didn't improve much as he witnessed Yukino give into pain as the class card failed and she ended up losing. So now, Ivan was a bit more contemplative about taking these cards.
"You're still unsure, aren't you?" The stranger asked.
"I did see some girl scream in pain after shooting a few magic lasers." Ivan pointed out.
"That's true, your concerns are valid. However, it's a matter of will that's the problem." The stranger said. "The celestial spirit mage was too weak. Her body isn't built for such levels of stress and she likely had a weak heart. You saw how scared she was when that Mermaid Heel wizard almost killed her." he explained.
Ivan had to agree with that much, "I admit, that suicidal wager only boosted her ego and brought Sabertooth's name to shame." he said.
"So that's why, I'm offering a trial run. Perhaps a real wizard who can handle the pain could use one of these cards." the stranger said as he presented five class cards.
"And you swear these won't short out on me?" Ivan asked. "My guild may be small, but we're bringing down my father's guild." he said.
"Yes, yes, that Kurohibe man looked quite intense and that girl with the deranged smile was pretty intense before she lost." the stranger said. "Now then, consider this a test drive before the real product is deal is settled." he said.
Both of these men were dishonest and there was no doubt that one of them would fall into ruin before the day ended.
Back with Erza
To everyone's shock, minus her guild, Erza had destroyed a chunk of the 100 monsters with moderate difficulty. She had taken many hits but the Titania would keep hitting back harder. About a third of the monsters were left and Erza was only concerned with finding that high ranking monster who is said to be the most powerful.
"I may have to use Ventus' card if the difficulty of the threat is that great." Erza told herself.
Erza was right, but she would be fooled right away. As she found the creature, it was very minuscule and seemed to lack the strength to match the lowest ranking monsters. If anything, Erza initially thought Wendy could have taken it on without her magic. It was a good thing Erza didn't let guard all the way down.
"And it looks like Titania Erza is surrounded! Is this the end!?" Lola asked as several monsters surrounded Erza.
"You have to be kidding me. Requip!" Erza shouted as she activated her Giant Armor.
Seconds later, Erza slammed down her pole arm and created a giant smoke cloud. After a few seconds of loud crashing, Erza stumbled out panting as she hanged onto her weapon. The spectators continued to cheer while Lola was continuing to scream in excitement.
"Erza may be getting exhausted, but she handled those mobs like no problem! Only four monsters are left!" Lola announced.
Then another monster came from behind Erza. The most powerful woman in Fairy Tail blocked the attack from behind and pulled out her class card. Channeling the remaining bit of magic she had, Erza activated the card and triggered a flashing light. As the light blinded everyone, two more monsters came out and attempted to support the first monsters.
When the light died down, Erza was wearing silver armor that was adorned with a blue dress. She then raised her arms into the air, gesturing as if she were gripping a sword. Before delivering fast swings that sliced all three monsters with relative ease.
"Did she just defeat three monsters with air?" Lola asked.
Erza's chosen class card was Artoria Pendragon's Saber form. As part of her skills, Artoria adorned the Invisible Wind which made it impossible to see Excalibur. With that, Erza looked around for the S-Class monster she saw and found it behind her.
"There you are! Prepare for death!" Erza yelled as she pointed her invisible weapon at it.
The monster looked very wimpy and started to shake and sweat at Erza. No one minus the people behind the challenge looked impressed by the large spider like creature as it looked harmless. Yet, the beast proved it's danger level by flashing a purple beam of light at Erza. Suddenly surrounding the entire castle in an endless darkness.
The wimpy spider like creature became an armored Goliath in the shape of a demon. It's appearance matched it's strength as it kicked Erza towards the edge, nearly making her fall.
"You could not trick me." Erza said as she raised up Excalibur.
(Crow's Claw OST - Excalibur)
Erza then released the Invisible Wind skill and revealed Excalibur in it's glory. The S-Class charged at Erza and demolished the ground where Erza stood. Erza avoided the attack and jumped directly towards the monster. As it attempted to backhand her, Erza sliced off one hand before repeating the process with the other arm.
Erza then jumped back onto the ground and raised her sword to block an incoming kick. Erza stood her ground as the S-Class monster continued to bash it's foot against her. Erza timed the monster's attack before cutting off it's leg, resulting in the monster almost falling on top of her.
At the last moment, Erza raised Excalibur above her head. Piercing the eye at the center of the monster's chest piece. At that moment, Excalibur radiating with golden energy as Erza focused the last bit of magic within her.
With Fairy Tail
Everyone watched Erza's fight in awe, especially Mavis as she couldn't comprehend the shining light from Excalibur.
"The light." Is all the first master could say.
"Her sword shines, a dream that all wizards scattered in battle, past, present and future, hold and mournfully exalt as their final moments approach" Levy spoke up, gathering the guild's attention. "She carries their will as her pride, biding them to remain steadfast in their pride. Now, the undefeated Fairy sings aloud the name of the miracle she holds in her hands." She continued to say.
Everyone listened to Levy's passionate words as the whole castle of monsters illuminated. Banishing the darkness invoked by the S-Class monster as Erza held tightly onto her sword.
"And the name of that sword is…"
"EXCALIBUR!" Erza roared as she destroyed the S-Class monster in a blinding light that reached the heavens.
Even in the far distance from Crocus, many citizens of Fiore would look up and see the blinding light from their capital. Many being left unaware of what the origin of the majestic light is.
At the same time, Erza destroyed the castle and that was overkill!
(End of Song)
At the ground
Mato stood looking shocked at the destruction of the entire castle, "Winner… E-Erza Scarlet." he said, causing the crowd to cheer.
"Then what are we supposed to do?" Orga asked.
"Hang on a minute, cabo." Mato said, sprinting to find a good way to replace the challenge.
As amazing as Erza's display of power is, she really ruined the event by winning the whole thing by herself. Those monsters were illusions, but it would take more than a lot of magic and time to rebuild that castle.
Some time later
Mato came back with a strange floating device, "Sorry if this is boring, but we needed a challenge for the rest of you. I present to you, a Magic Power Finder or MPF, cabo." He said.
"So it measures our magic power?" Jura asked.
"Correct! Just give it the best magical attack and boom! You have your results, cabo!" Mato explained.
Hibiki still felt concerned, "Physical attacks aren't my strong suit. Spending quality time with a lovely lady is more my style." he said to Cana as he leaned closer to her.
"If I spent time dating cute boys like you, I wouldn't be able to drink my barrels." Cana said while pointing at her empty beer barrels.
The shear amount of them scared Nobarly, "How is she not dead yet? Does she have an iron kidney?" he asked.
Mato brought the attention back to him, "When you are ready, you may strike the MPF, cabo." he said.
Milliana was the first one to try, "I'll go first! Kitten Blast!" she yelled as she summoned her restraining tube to attack the orb.
Seconds later, the orb registered Milliana's score as 365. Sadly, this left everyone confused and unaware of how powerful this is. So they could only be left waiting to know who could score the highest.
"There's really no way to compare Milliana's power. Unless today's guest knows anything." Lola said before introducing Lahar of the Rune Knights.
"I do know quite a bit, Lola. In fact, we frequently use MPFs to gauge the strength of Rune Knights. A score of that level places Milliana at the level of a squad captain." Lahar explained.
"Incredible!" Lola said.
While Milliana cheered at hearing that fact. Her teammates looked concerned as she wasn't much of a heavy hitter on her team. Although they looked less worried once Nobarly eagerly attacked the orb with all of his strength.
Nobarly's Score: 149
"What the? Impossible!" Nobarly exclaimed as he felt pathetic.
Then Hibiki came forward, "It's my time to shine." he said, earning love from the ladies. Those same ladies felt turned off by Hibiki's next action, "I'm a failure." he whispered as he literally fell to his hands and knees and cried.
Hibiki's Score: 95
Then it was Orba's turn and he did not do so much better. As he stood in front of the MPF and opened his jacket to let out some kind of imp like creature come out. The imp hit the orb and went back into Orb's jacket.
Orba's Score: 4
Milliana giggled at the sight, "This means I'm winning!" she said as she rapidly shakes Mato.
"Not so fast, Sabertooth is winning today." Orga said as he shoved the two aside. He then charged up a lot of energy between his hands, "120 Millimeter Black Cannon!" he roared as he released a heavy amount of magic that stunned Nobarly and Hibiki.
Orga's Score: 3825
Milliana also looked frightened, "No way! That's ten times stronger than me!" she exclaimed with wide eyes.
Orga proceeded to sing with a microphone he had on hand to celebrate. Leaving Jura with the chance to channel his magical energy to deliver a devastating blow of his own. Resulting in an earthquake that made the entire arena shake and engulf the MFP in a massive pillar of light.
"Rumbling Fuji!" Jura yells.
Jura's score: 8544
Every contestant, minus a drunk Cana, was shocked by the Wizard Saint's power. That only left Cana who was still partially drunk and waiting for her own turn. Although it looked like almost no one expects Cana to provide a score that's remotely impressive, especially in her intoxicated state. Whereas Mavis was smiling the whole time as she had a secret of her own that would benefit Cana's performance.
Firstly, Cana removed her shirt that did very little to cover her bra and showed off her skin. This made the men whistle at her beauty as she approached the MPF. Seconds later, she raised her wrist at orb and revealed a glowing marking that released a great flash of light. Moments later, the entire arena was blinded with an even greater flash of light.
"Fairy Glitter!" Cana cried out.
"It looks like Fairy Tail has a thing against eyesight, because it's all flashing lights today!" Lola announced before hearing a loud explosion.
When the flash was gone and the resulting smoke cleared. The MPF was obliterated, leaving a score that must have broken it's limit.
Cana's score: 9999
By this point, even Lahar was lost for words as the last three attacks were unimaginable for him and many others. This really was the year for Fairy Tail.
The Battles
As the challenges were over and Fairy Tail had literally outshined the competition. Every other guild had to work hard to win the battle rounds. Although it was depressing as some of these battles became one sided pretty quickly. The best examples being Seamus and Eve losing for their respective guilds against Milliana and Rufus.
When that was done, it was time for Wendy to contribute to her guild.
"Make us proud Wendy!" Natsu said excitedly.
"Don't strain yourself, child. Do your best without hurting yourself." Charle said.
"Show no mercy to your enemy, but also present good sportsmanship." Erza said.
"Bye guys, I'll work hard for you guys!" Wendy said as she ran down into the arena.
"Wendy has gotten really strong in the past few weeks, don't you guys think?" Lucy asked.
"It's only natural that Wendy grows." Charle said in a matter of fact tone.
"Fairy Tail would be nothing without faith in our nakama." Erza added.
Lucy smiled at the support that everyone gave their youngest member. As she watched, she saw Sherria Blendy of Lamia Scale being called down.
"I guess this is the match for the younger wizards to participate in." Lucy said. That's when she suddenly felt a strange sensation, "Hm, what's that?" she asked as she brought out an orb.
The orb worked as a communication lacrima and once Lucy got it activated. She saw a familiar slueth with blue hair and victorian era attire.
"What's up detective?" Lucy asked.
"I thought now would be a good time for a courtesy call, my dear Lucy." said the voice of Sherlock Holmes. "Sir Jellal and I are making our way back to the arena right now." He said.
"Is something wrong?" Lucy asked, noticing how fast he was talking.
With Sherlock Holmes
Right as the famous detective from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous works had contacted Lucy, he had sprinted after Jellal. With the man giving little explanation for the sudden haste. All Sherlock knew was that there was some strange influx of magic.
"My dear master, all I can say is Jellal had likely sensed the strange phenomenon as I. It's not nothing natural I might add." Sherlock told Lucy via his own lacrima orb.
"Do you need me to do anything?" Lucy asked.
"For now, just keep everyone calm. I would prefer to keep the crowd calm and avoid situating themselves with potential danger." Sherlock answered. "Sir Jellal had already spoke with his own compatriots. We should be regrouping with them and Medea soon." He said.
"Okay, but remember to avoid gathering on your end. Jellal isn't exactly allowed to run around in public." Lucy said.
"I know that much as well as to keep an eye on him. Lest he be possessed by another foreign power." Sherlock said as he looked at Jellal's running form. "I will update you again on the situation should it escalate." he said before deactivating the lacrima.
"He's in the arena! I know it!" Jellal said.
"Surely it could not be individual magics could it? We had witnessed several powers that could surpass the Wizard Saints not too long ago." Sherlock said, referring to Excalibur, Fairy Glitter and Jura's attack.
Jellal shook his head, "No, Zeref's black magic is different. It's not just powerful, but it's tainted and corrupt like a poison." he said.
"Of course, I was stunned by the feeling of the immense magical power. I never registered the idea that such magic isn't only measured in power and destructive capabilities." Sherlock said while trying keeping a mental note of Zeref's magic.
The detective would have preferred having a caster by his side. At least they would help give him details on magic. Perhaps he could ask Medea when he regroups with the rest of Crime Sorciere.
Some time later, in the arena
The inner parts of the arena was still relatively empty as the second round has yet to end. Jellal and Sherlock arrived to find a relatively empty looking hall.
"Any features we should look out for?" Sherlock asked.
"I don't know, maybe a dark cloak or something. Hopefully the most evil wizard in history is dressed like the most shady man in the world." Jellal said as he looked around.
"And it's a stunning tie! Little Wendy came so close, but Sherria refused to back down! Let's give them a round of applause!" Lola announced outside.
"At least Fairy Tail is still doing relatively well." Sherlock said.
"And time for the final battle! Nullpudding of Raven Tail versus Elfman Strauss of Fairy Tail Team B!" Lola added.
"Good luck to you, young Strauss. I can only hope we fare better." Sherlock said as he saw some people moving into the room.
Whether it was to buy snacks, go to the bathroom or just leave early, a small crowd formed up. Sherlock looked around for anyone who looked obviously suspicious despite how much it would contradict his methods. At the same time, Jellal did the same thing but with more success. He spotted an individual with a large black cloak that covered their body.
"Holmes, over here!" Jellal called out.
Sherlock followed after his temporary master when he also spotted the individual with the cloak. However, just as they began give chase, Jellal was blocked off by some man in a magic council uniform. Jellal tried to move around him but the man refused to allow him to move.
"Pardon me, I need to go there." Jellal said, trying to keep his face hidden behind his hood.
"Sir, I'm going to need you to remove your hood." the man said.
Sherlock recognized the man from Lucy's memory, 'Mest Gryder, I had my suspicions by his sudden disappearance.' he thought, not knowing the full truth of Doranbolt's identity. Sherlock then moved in, "Pardon em sir, but my compatriot and I are needed elsewhere right now." He said.
Doranbolt was adamant about not letting Jellal pass and wouldn't let Sherlock talk him out. Just like the members of Crime Sorciere, he also sensed the dark malicious magic. Doranbolt only saw Jellal and thought his appearance was suspicious and immediately assumed him to the be cause of the dark magic. At the same time, the man wasn't aware that he was talking to Jellal yet.
"Sir, you may be an authoritative figure on policing the citizens of Fiore. Yet, unless my compatriot is under arrest, being searched with probable cause or you have a warrant signed by a judge. I'm afraid he does not have to present his identity to you." Sherlock said, practically blockading Doranbolt.
At this point, Mermaid Heel had also made their way here to get some snacks. Where they witnessed several Rune Knights appear to block Jellal from behind as Doranbolt tried to press the matter.
"If you are clear of any wrongdoing then there is no harm in presenting himself, is there?" Doranbolt asked.
Had Sherlock been a lawyer instead of a detective, he would have groaned at Doranbolt's face. What is it with the "if you're not hiding anything, then why can't I search?" trope? It's not a matter of right or wrong, but a matter of an officer of the law trying to find all the incriminating evidence they can obtain.
'It's already too late, the negative presence is fading.' Jellal mentally cursed, not noticing Kagura and Milliana looking at his direction.
"Hey Kagura, what do you think is up?" Milliana asked.
"It looks like some sort of questioning. This should not concern." Kagura said, almost ready to walk away from the scene.
"Unbelievable! Almost every member of Raven Tail is at the arena! Was this an illusion all along!? Will Elfman Strauss be able to handle not just one, but four members of Raven Tail!? Is this even legal!?" Lola shouted.
"What the in the blazes is happening out there?" Sherlock asked in a whisper.
Just as Sherlock was surprised by the announcement, Jellal's hood accidentally came off as he turned his head. It took him several seconds before realizing his face was revealed in public.
Now everyone was in a predicament, from Elfman seemingly surrounded by a bunch of cheaters to Jellal likely being arrested again and Zeref or a similar threat being free to continue walking around capital of the kingdom.
