Gerri glimpses Roman through the walls of his father's office as she walks into Waystar for what she intends to be the last time. Roman looks terrible despite the suit he's wearing. He's pale and has stitches above his left eye. She's been worried about him since he ran out of the funeral, has heard rumours of him throwing himself into the riots but had hoped he wasn't that stupid. As soon as he sees Gerri he turns away, shielded by Kendall.
She's still smarting over Roman firing her, both times but more so the second time. The first time he had just been following his dad's orders, the second time had been all him and his ego.
You are not good at your job. Maybe Dad did know. The little asshole. He could have gone for her looks or her age, things women are supposed to be insecure about, but he had known just how to hit her where it hurt.
I am good at my job, she had said, dangerously close to tears. The fucking man-child had actually made her cry.
She intends to sign whatever she has to sign, take the money and get out, but she ends up sticking around to see the result of the board meeting. It turns into a sibling brawl as usual and Matsson wins — or the money does.
The next time she sees Roman his stitches look worse, but he somehow looks better, less hunched in on himself, like he's finally done with all this bullshit. He signs the company over to Matsson for the cameras and then storms out before Gerri can speak to him. She's not sure what she would say even if she did catch up to him — are you okay, I hate you, I'm sorry, I wish I'd never met you, let me look at those stitches. Before she can contemplate following him Tom is approaching her with that new-CEO glow that won't last. "Gerri? Do you have a minute?"
