Chapter Two
June 13 2022, Gravesfield Connecticut
It was a bright crisp morning in Gravesfield Connecticut. A young teenage girl is moving about in a kitchen, starting up breakfast for her and her single dad. The family cat rubs up against her legs, meowing and chirping, as the Young Girl steps away from the stove for a few minutes as the home fries cook. Opening the cat food container, the Young Girl pours the dry cat food in a bowl and leaves it on the counter while checking on the home fries.
"Skye, no," said the Young Girl, tossing the home fries about in the skillet. "You'll get you breakfast when me and dad sit down."
Jumping off the counter, Skye the cat waits eagerly as the Young Girl finishes the home fries and starts up cooking some over easy eggs. Grabbing some slices of bread and placing them in the toaster, the Young Girl grabs some orange marmalade from the fridge. Plating the food, the Young Girl sets the plates on the table. Sitting down, the Young Girl waits as she hears her dad shuffling around his room.
"Dad," said the Young Girl, seeing her dad about to leave. "Your breakfast."
"Sorry Danielle, I don't want to be late for my first day at the museum," said the Young Girl's Dad, walking over and kissing her on the head. "I'll grab something while I'm out. Be safe, sweet pea."
Danielle is a young fourteen-year-old girl of European descent and stood at five foot five inches. She had dark brown hair that stopped in the middle of her back. A lock of her hair was silvery white and braided on the left side, held in place with a blue hair tie. She had dark blue eyes but the lower area of her iris was a light purplish pink and was light skinned much like her dad. Her clothes were a capped sleeve black shirt with a light olive-green sleeveless knee length hooded jacket that slowly faded to brown from the waist on down and had four sideways rupee-shaped buttons with the top one being blue, the one under it being red, the next being purple, and the last button being yellow. A patch of three gold triangles joined to form a bigger triangle was on the back of the jacket. She had on a pair of light denim jean shorts and black ankle socks. Her shoes were brown ankle boots with shoelaces. On her left wrist was a beaded bracelet with each bead being the color of the rainbow. A necklace was seen around her neck, settling just above her sternum, a blue gem with a light blue four-point star on top held in place by a silver band with iridescent gems in the border, eleven silver points on the outer edges, a silver four-point star dangling at the bottom while a gold eight-point star dangled off it, and a gold chain. As for Skye, a ten-year-old female Balinese cat with an old-style seal point coat with sapphire blue eyes and had a light blue leather collar around her neck with a star shaped silver tag bearing her name and address.
Danielle's dad walks out the door of the house not noticing how sad the action had left Danielle in. Deeply sighing, Danielle grabs her dad's plate and starts cutting up the over easy egg before placing it in Skye's dish.
"Looks like its just you and me again Skye," said Danielle, putting Skye's dish down and watching Skye eat with gusto. "Things just haven't been the same since mom left."
Eating her breakfast, Danielle watches the time before placing the dishes in the sink, grabbing her khaki messenger bag with a sun and moon Taoist symbol on the flap and leaves the house. Replacing her boots with pink inline skates, Danielle heads to her school, Gravesfield High. Skating through town, Danielle ignores the catcalls that are thrown her way from various guys. The moment Danielle got to school, she switched her skates over back to her boots and heads off to her first class of the day, English with Mr. Sandoval. As the school day went on and Danielle was about to head to her next class, a few snakes slither her way. Danielle screams as she jumps on top of a water fountain.
"Shoo shoo," said Danielle, gripping her messenger bag close. "Go on, git."
"Sorry about that," said Luz, running over and slowly grabbing the snakes so they wouldn't slither away and bite her.
"Why do you have snakes in school?" asked Danielle, staring at Luz as she handled the snakes.
"For my book report," replied Luz, putting the last snake in a box before walking away to her next class. "It was nice meeting you."
"Nice to mee'cha too," said Danielle, waving bye to Luz before hearing the school bell. "Crud, I'm going to be late."
Heading to class, Danielle ignores a voice in the back of her head. The remainder of school went like it normally would for Danielle. Once school was over, Danielle places her skates back on and jumps off the entry way. As she skates back home, Danielle notices a car go by with a dejected Luz in it, alongside what Danielle thinks is Luz's mother. The moment Danielle arrived home, she kicked off her skates and drops her messenger bag on the railing of the stairwell to her room. Skye greets her by brushing up against her legs, earning giggles from Danielle. Heading towards the kitchen, Danielle starts up dinner, making her dad's favorite of Hamburg steak with gravy with a side of mashed potatoes and steamed carrots. Unfortunately, Danielle waited a few hours with no sign of her dad coming home for dinner, which she was no stranger to. Sadly, Danielle places her dad's dish in the microwave before eating her dinner. Sky ends up pushing her dish closer to Danielle before eating, hoping just by being near it would cheer Danielle up, in which case it earned Skye a smile from Danielle and some gentle strokes on her head. Finishing her dinner, Danielle cleans the dishes from morning and dinner before grabbing her messenger bag and heading upstairs to her room. Dropping her messenger bag on her loveseat, Danielle heads to her bathroom. Showering and changing into her pajamas, Danielle plays a game on her Nintendo Swap. Hours went by, Danielle has turned off her game and has fallen asleep on the loveseat with Skye curled into her.
The next morning, Danielle wakes up to see that a blanket was placed over her. Her dad had returned home during the middle of the night, exhausted after staying so long working at the museum. He had checked up on Danielle, noticing she was asleep before placing a blanket over her before kissing the top of her head. Changing into her clothes, Danielle heads downstairs and starts up breakfast. Noticing a jar with a severed green clawed hand on the counter, Danielle cringes at the sight before moving it to a table. Starting up breakfast, Danielle makes two mushroom onion omelets with a side of bacon and the same toast combination from yesterday. Brewing up some coffee, Danielle hears her dad waking up. Pouring the coffee in cups and giving Skye her breakfast, Danielle waits at the dining table for her dad.
"Dad… your breakfast," said Danielle, seeing her dad about to leave the house.
"Sorry sweet pea, I have to get to work," said Danielle's Dad, opening the door.
"No… no no!" said Danielle, getting frantic before standing up and staring at her dad. "There's enough time for you to eat before…"
"I have work to get to," said Danielle's Dad, turning around and staring at his daughter. "I have to organize my stuff there. And place some new exhibits."
"What new exhibits?" asked Danielle, upset before grabbing the jar with the severed green clawed hand. "Like this?"
"Careful there," said Danielle's Dad, grabbing the jar. "That's a mummified hand of a kappa, a…"
"A Japanese demon… a yokai! I know this stuff," said Danielle, staring at her dad. "What I don't get is why you never have the time for me anymore!"
"Danielle, sweet pea," said Danielle's Dad, placing his hand on Danielle's shoulder. "Someone has to put food on the table. This job will help."
"Well, I'll get a job, it's summer break anyway," said Danielle, looking at her dad. "I saw that the Robin's Roast Café is hiring this summer."
"No way, you're much too young to be getting a job already," said Danielle's Dad, ruffling Danielle's hair. "Enjoy your childhood."
"You're kidding me! I'm no longer a child!" said Danielle, fixing her hair. "I'm a teenager! And there are teenagers that get jobs. If I start earning money, we won't have to spend the money that mom left us."
"That's why I got this job. It will give me a much steadier income than all those other jobs that I've done over the years," said Danielle's Dad, placing his hands on Danielle's shoulders. "You're not getting a job, end of discussion."
"But-But… this is ridiculous!" shouted Danielle, pushing away from her dad. "All you do anymore is talk about witches and demons. Are those going to be your new exhibits? People are going to laugh and make fun of you more than before. They're going to start thinking you're more insane and that I'm not that far away from being like you."
"Watch your tone with me young lady," said Danielle's Dad, glaring at Danielle. "I am still your father and as such…"
"Ever since mom left six years ago, you've changed," said Danielle, looking at her dad before screaming. "I hear people saying "That poor Hopkins girl, her dad is never around for her" or-or "Isn't that Jacob's little girl. Let's hope she doesn't turn out like her old man." I don't like hearing these things."
"Danielle, wait…" said Danielle's Dad, watching Danielle run towards the stairs.
"I hate you," shouted Danielle, running up the steps with tears in her eyes.
Walking out the door, Danielle's Dad looks up towards the windows of his daughter room before heading to work. Upstairs, Danielle is crying on her bed as Sky jumps up and rubs against her. Calming down after a few moments, Danielle stares at her closet. Getting up, Danielle grabs her messenger bag and another bag from the closet. Before heading downstairs, Danielle notices a small wrapped present on her bookshelf with a note. Hesitating, Danielle grabs it and heads downstairs and towards the door.
"Sorry Skye. I can't handle this anymore. I'm going to search for mom," said Danielle, bending down to pet Skye. "Watch over dad for me. Make sure he doesn't do things he shouldn't."
Heading out the door, Danielle runs into the nearby woods, hearing Skye's meows in the distance. Stopping after a bit, Danielle takes off her necklace and stares longingly at it as she walks. Not noticing where she was going, Danielle trips on a tree root and stumbles to the ground, dropping her necklace in the process. Rubbing her ankle, Danielle hears an owl hoot nearby and spots the little fella with a bag, staring at her necklace before picking it up.
"Owlbert…"
"No no no little owl," said Danielle, ignoring the voice in her head and running after the little owl. "Give back my mom's necklace."
Coming upon an old decrepit house, Danielle sees the little owl fly into the house. Danielle had heard stories about this house, that it was once the house of the Wittebane Brothers, witch hunters back during the founding of Gravesfield, and that it was haunted. Deeply sighing and steeling herself, Danielle runs up the steps and into the house. The door slams shut behind her and the entire inside glows, visible through the windows and holes in the roof. Unaware of what transpired, Danielle's life is about to take an interesting turn of events… of witches and wild magic.
Owl Pellet #1
Moments after Danielle had entered the old decrepit house, another being snake-like in appearance, had left and appeared out in the open, slithering down the steps. Looking around, it slithers through the woods before hearing Danielle's Dad nearby.
"Danielle, sweet pea," said Danielle's Dad, pushing some brush to the side. "Oh, there you are."
"He-he-hello," said the Snake-like Being, nervously shifting its appearance to looking like Danielle.
"Look I'm sorry about this morning. Let me make up for it," said Danielle's Dad, cupping the cheek of his daughter's doppelganger. "Let's have dinner at the Cheesecake Atelier tonight, my treat. You can have a whole slice of cheesecake for yourself, you don't have to share with me this time."
"O-okay," said the Snake-like Being, seeing Danielle's Dad offer his hand to them before slowly taking it.
"Alright, let's go," said Danielle's Dad, leading the Snake-like Being back to his house while slowly gripping the Snake-like Being's hand gently. "You know, I wouldn't have found you if Skye wasn't pointing and meowing in the direction that you went. You got to be careful in these woods. Who knows what beasts live in here and could take you away from me."
