Chapter Four

As Danielle slept throughout the night, various points in her dream depicted what had transpired the day she arrived on the Boiling Isles. Waking up after a bit, Danielle stares at the ceiling for a bit before looking at King who was still curled up and snoozing away. Standing up, Danielle stretches before stopping the window from blowing back and forth while staring outside.

"I wasn't imagining it. This realm is real," said Danielle, closing the window before bending down and petting King. "Come on, sleepyhead, wakey wakey."

"Five more minutes," said King, turning his head away.

"Okay," said Danielle, walking out the room. "But if you're not up by then, I'm splashing ice water on ya."

"Weh?!" said King, staring up as Danielle walks down the hall. "She wouldn't really do that… would she?"

"If I remember correctly, the bathroom is…" said Danielle, walking on up to the third floor and walking down the hall. "Right here…"

"Hi, Danielle!" shouted Hooty, as Danielle opened the door only to be punched in the face. "Ow! I'm just wishing you a good morning."

"Don't scare me like that! Also, I'm sorry," said Danielle, rubbing the spot where she punched Hooty. "You could had greeted me in the kitchen. I prefer privacy when in the restroom."

"Okay," said Hooty, retreating to the front door.

After having washed up and everything, Danielle heads downstairs. Entering the kitchen, Danielle spots King trying to climb into a high chair. Sighing, Danielle helps King into the high chair and pulls his plate of what to be scrambled eggs with eyes towards him. Eda enters not long later and magicks a cup towards her before opening the fridge.

"Mornin Eda," said Danielle, sitting down at the table. "Have a good night sleep."

"Ah, right. A human lives here now," said Eda, pouring a beverage into her cup. "Danielle, right?"

"Yup," replied Danielle, staring at Eda. "So, where do I start on this apprenticeship of mine?"

"Kid, I haven't even had my cup of apple blood yet," said Eda, sipping her drink.

"Please tell me that's just your realm's version of apple juice," said Danielle, only for Eda to tilt the cup in view revealing the liquid to be red, just like blood. "Still could be juice regardless of color."

"Work," said Eda, magicking a bag into the room. "I run a few businesses. On weekends, I offer rare human treasures that Owlbert drags over from your side of the realm."

"So, work first, lessons later. Got it," said Danielle, seeing a bunch of bottles with liquids in the bag. "Will I eventually get a staff as well?"

"You really want one?" asked Eda, staring at Danielle.

"If it gets me from one place to the next," said Danielle, standing up. "Then, yeah, I'd love a staff."

"Magic staff, come to me!" said Eda, holding out her hand.

"Hmm…" said Danielle, hearing crashes as the staff flies in the kitchen and smacks right into Eda. "That had to hurt."

"It's early," said Eda, twirling her staff. "Now, witches are awarded their staffs from school. With me as your teacher, you'll be working to earn it."

"Fine by me," said Danielle, walking alongside Eda towards the backyard.

"Most days I sell only the finest homemade elixirs and potions," said Eda, before pointing towards a town. "Today you'll deliver packages and sell potions to that town over there, Bonesborough. You'll have to be careful. I have rivals everywhere who'd love to take my business down and you along with it."

"I'll do my best," said Danielle, walking back in the kitchen with Eda and grabbing the bag of potions. "I won't let you down."

"Here you go," said Eda, handing a piece of paper with addresses on it to Danielle as they walk into the living room.

"Quite a few places to go," said Danielle, opening the front door before petting King who was dozing on a chest.

"Remember, never befriend a man in sandals and always measure twice, cut once," said Eda, slamming the front door shut. "Good luck!"

"Okay…" said Danielle, standing outside the front door. "I have no idea what that means."

"I hate to interrupt your power nap, but you have to go with her," said Eda, lightly pushing King.

"What? But I just found the perfect spot," said King, standing up and glaring at Eda. "Why do I have to go?"

"You and I know she's either going to get lost or eaten, probably both," said Eda, before hearing a snack bag being shaken about.

"Cheese curls!" shouted King, opening the front door and seeing Danielle holding said snack bag. "Alright, you got me. I'll go."

"Be back by nightfall or risk mortal peril," said Eda, slamming the front door again.

"Have a nice trip," said Hooty, looking at Danielle and King.

"Here King," said Danielle, walking in the direction of Bonesborough with King. "You know the place better than I do right now."

"Yes, I do," said King, being handed the paper with addresses.

"With you as the guide, we'll get done sooner," said Danielle, walking down a pathway. "And you can get back to your power nap."

Taking a premade breakfast sandwich out of her messenger bag, Danielle eats as they continue to walk towards Bonesborough. King directs her down a certain back alley turn when they enter Bonesborough to evade any nearby Guards. Staring around the town, Danielle is taken in by the marvels and horrors around her.

"This place is fascinating and creepy at the same time," said Danielle, watching a weird butterfly fly by. "Am I the only human here in this town?"

"Haven't seen any others," said King, hands behind his head.

"My mom is out there somewhere," said Danielle, looking up at the sky. "I hope she's okay."

"Our realm is just as big as your realm," said King, staring up at Danielle. "She could be anywhere."

"I know King, I know," said Danielle, hefting the bag of potions into a better position.

Walking through Bonesborough, King shows Danielle to each area on the list. Danielle had to swat various bugs away from biting her. One house in general, after having seen the mouth around the doorbell, was coughing up a storm after being blasted with pepper spray by Danielle. Delivering each parcel was actually a breeze. Taking a break before going to the last one on the list, Danielle uses some of the money Eda gave her to get King something called a Not Dog.

"So, the currency here is called Snails," said Danielle, really looking at the coin. "Yeah, I can see a snail design on it. And they come in gold, silver and bronze pieces."

"Yup," said King, scarfing his Not Dog down in an instant. "I know I've had enough delight for one day."

"Right then, let's head towards the last place on the list," said Danielle, petting King before standing and grabbing the bag of potions.

Walking down an alley that King pointed to, Danielle pushes a few tarps away. Getting to the end of the alley, Danielle pulls down the tarp in her way before seeing a grand castle in front of her. Danielle feels something is off as the castle looks like nothing compared to the rest of the town. Ringing the doorbell, Danielle waits patiently as the doors open before her and King.

"Big houses always belong to big whack jobs," said King, staring down the doorway. "Let's kick the package inside and get outta here."

"As much as I would agree," said Danielle, walking on in. "They still have to pay for whatever elixirs and potions they've ordered."

"Hey, wait up," said King, only for the doors to slam shut, startling him. "Weh!"

"Hello, anyone here?" asked Danielle, hoping for a response and being on guard. "I-I'm delivering a package from Miss Eda, the Owl Lady."

Strolling on out from the upper floor, a wizard is seen. Walking down the stairway, the wizard approaches Danielle and King. Backing up slightly, Danielle is wary of the old wizard. Pushing King behind her, Danielle takes out the items that were ordered.

"Weird old man in jim-jams," said King, getting a giggle out of Danielle.

"Here are the items you ordered Sir," said Danielle, holding out a couple of potions. "The payment is twenty-five silver snails."

"I was in my oscillarium, reading the stars" said the Wizard, descending the stairs while staring at Danielle. "And who might you be, with eyes full of curiosity?"

"Sorry Sir," said Danielle, staring at the Wizard. "I'm not allowed to give out my name to customers on my first day."

"Young lady, dareth I say, I sense something unique about you," said the Wizard, conjuring forth two chairs and a table with snacks. "Please, won't you join me for tea?"

"Okay," said Danielle, picking King up and walking forward while whispering in King's ears. "Don't eat or drink anything. Who knows what he may have put in it. Just pretend."

"Okay," replied King, whispering back.

"We'd love to join you for tea," said Danielle, putting King down. "Look King, scones. You didn't eat much this morning before we left."

"Scones!" said King, playing along and jumping on the table, eyeing the scones.

"Do you sell potions, Sir?" asked Danielle, looking at some potions nearby.

"Please, call me Adegast," said the Wizard, staring at Danielle. "Ma'am, yes, I run a small business."

"Please don't call me Ma'am," said Danielle, looking at the Wizard and seeing King secretly stuff the food under the tablecloth and stomping them down. "I'm not that old yet."

"You should run a small business of more scones into my mouth," said King, holding up an empty plate before chuckling. "Yes!"

"I think that's enough sugar in you," said Danielle, picking King up. "Let's get you home to rest."

"Wait, I'm surprised to see you here," said Adegast, stopping Danielle in her tracks. "It was my understanding that Eda delivered the packages herself."

"I'm studying under Miss Eda for a while," said Danielle, staring at Adegast. "Aso I'm her apprentice for the time being."

"Oh!" said Adegast, quirking his eyebrow. "And how are you finding the experience so far?"

"I just started," replied Danielle, scratching under King's chin.

"Well, I have a question," said Adegast, staring at Danielle. "Would you like to go on a quest?"

"Depends," replied Danielle, tilting her head in curiosity. "What kind of quest?"

"I might have just the thing," replied Adegast, pulling out a scroll and handing it to Danielle. "The prophecy speaks of a young human girl who will claim the Celestial Staff and free this world from an ancient evil. Perhaps thou hath cometh here for a reason."

"I know my reason," said Danielle, putting King down and staring at the map on the scroll.

"Should you believe yourself worthy to attempt this quest..." said Adegast, walking towards the entrance. "You need to know the road is dark and perilous."

"I kinda figure that," said Danielle, walking after Adegast but staying further behind.

"And only the Chosen One can pull the staff from its post," said Adegast, staring at Danielle.

"Neat story, awesome," said King, dragging the bag of potions. "Anyway, your food is gone and we are, too."

"Thanks Sir," said Danielle, picking the bag of potions up. "I'll take you up on this offer."

"Wonderful," said Adegast, twiddling his fingers in excitement.

"Really?" said King, jumping up on Danielle's shoulder and whispering in her ear.

"Yup," replied Danielle, whispering back. "And Eda is coming along. In secret though."

Heading back to the Owl House, Danielle wonders how to deal with Adegast. Knowing that she knows no magic yet, Danielle opens the front door and grabs the toy sword she saw earlier. King scurries off to find Eda. Not long later, King was able to convince Eda to head upstairs.

"Alright," said Eda, staring at Danielle. "What is it?"

"We came across a customer that may want to take you down," said Danielle, handing the scroll over to Eda. "Convinced us of this quest and handed this map over. I thought it best to let you know."

"Good thinking," said Eda, looking at the map. "And you're right. This map is bunk. There's no lake with a Celestial Staff on the Boiling Isles. I would have stolen it ages ago."

"Thought so," said Danielle, pocketing her hands in her jacket. "So, what do we do? I already said I'd take up his offer."

"Did you get his name?" asked Eda, staring at Danielle.

"Adegast," replied Danielle, staring at Eda.

"I know this guy. He's no wizard. He's what you'd call a puppeteer, a demon who specializes in scamming and manipulating people," said Eda, crumbling the scroll. "He's trying to use you to get to me."

"Well, why not let him think that?" asked Danielle, sitting down on the couch. "Turn the tables on him for thinking he could trick us."

"Someone's thinking," said Eda, grinning in delight.

"I don't like the fact that he thought I was some fantasy loving little girl that could be pulled in so easily," said Danielle, crossing her arms over her chest. "I had to grow up quickly after mom left to help dad."

"Let's do it then," said Eda, sitting down next to Danielle.

"I was thinking you and King could secretly follow on staff while I take on this so-called quest," said Danielle, staring at Eda. "I know it's dangerous but I think he wants me by myself."

"If things get dicey, I'm jumping in," said Eda, standing up. "Now let's get you some potions for you to attack with. I got some nice exploding ones that can help."

"Okay," said Danielle, standing up.

Heading towards the tower behind the Owl House, Eda grabs some of the potions she mentioned and hands them to Danielle. Stuffing some in her messenger bag and in her pockets, Danielle feels King stuff some in her hood. Leaving the property, Eda shows Danielle the direction to go. Hanging back for quite a bit, Eda and King hop on the staff and start to follow suite, staying out of eye sight while keeping an eye open for Adegast. Coming upon a sign saying she was leaving city limits, Danielle slides down the slope before chopping down vines as she walks with the toy sword. After a bit, Danielle comes upon a village of cats. Walking though the village, a young man pops out of the village fountain in front of Danielle.

"I see. So you're the Chosen One," said the Young Man, scoffing. "The Celestial Staff should've picked me, Nevareth Bladestrife, Teen Prince of Angstmore."

"Ugh…" thought Danielle, walking past Nevareth. "I don't need some pretty boy edgelord following me."

"Hey, wait…" said Nevareth, running after Danielle.

"Look here Edgelord, I don't need you following me," said Danielle, pointing the toy sword at Nevareth. "So beat it."

"Danielle really knows how to handle herself," thought Eda, hearing Danielle from where she was.

Unfortunately, Nevareth didn't take the hint and followed anyway. And if that wasn't annoying enough, his little animal companion joined up not long afterwards. Danielle had to pinch her nose since Nevareth's animal companion not only smelled like an onion was going bad but was an onion with bat eyes and sneakers. Coming upon a bridge, an old cat jumps out before them.

"Ew," said Nevareth, staring at the old cat.

"You don't get to make comments here," said Danielle, staring back at Nevareth.

"Hum-di-diddle, to pass the bridge, you must first solve my riddle," said the Old Cat, dancing about.

"Go ahead," said Danielle, groaning and twirling her finger. "Out with it."

"Your quest shall stop if you fail this game," said the Old Cat, still dancing about. "So tell me, my dear, what is my name?"

"Seriously, there's a name tag on his cowl," thought Danielle, before bending down. "It's Chris."

"That's it. You may cross the bridge," said Chris, before taking out a ring. "And please take this, Chosen One. It shall help you on your journey."

"Hmm…" thought Danielle, grabbing it and secretly tossing it over the bridge. "Not really my style anyway, gem is too big."

"Do you need a cape?" asked Nevareth, looking at Danielle.

"So help me, if you take off that shirt and place it on me," said Danielle, glaring at Nevareth. "I will castrate you."

"Okay," said Nevareth, nervously backing up.

Unfortunately, just like the other two, Chris had followed along as well. At one point, Danielle had come across a village of fairies. All the fairies clambered around her, trying to get her to stay for some food and rest. Danielle just ignored them the best she could and found the path out of the village. Eda and King could see from their viewpoint that these obstacles were annoying Danielle. One certain fairy followed after Danielle, which annoyed her even more.

"For you, Chosen One," said the Fairy, twirling her hand and producing two bracelets.

"This quest couldn't end sooner," said Danielle, pinching the bridge of her nose.

"Your quest will soon come to an end, for the staff you seek is around the bend," said Chris, walking forward.

"Thank the heavens," said Danielle, running in the direction that Chris pointed.

Eda had at this point went ahead of Danielle and tossed a potion into the coming fog, making it much thicker. Smelling Danielle, King geared Eda towards where he was smelling her. Tapping Danielle's shoulder, Eda gestures for her to get on while conjuring an illusionary Danielle to take her place. As the illusionary Danielle continues the rest of the trek towards the nearby lake, Eda spots some movement nearby. Grinning, Eda gears the staff slowly towards the lake.

"Okay, moment of truth," said Illusionary Danielle, grabbing the staff in the middle of the lake. "Yes! I am the Chosen One! I knew it! I always suspected there was a reason nobody understood me. I have concrete proof now."

"Oh, Adegast is going down," thought Danielle, seeing Adegast move onto the bridge after the staff disintegrated.

"Danielle, the human. Your hubris has failed you, Witch Apprentice." said Adegast, standing at the end of the bridge before being hit by an exploding potion. "Ow! What the…"

"Nice try Adegast," said Eda, jumping off her staff and staring down the real Adegast before her. "But we had already figured you out."

"Really now," said Adegast, staring at Eda than the Illusionary Danielle who disappeared before him. "Huh… what? You… you tricked me!"

"You tricked me first thinking I would believe you," said Danielle, flying by and throwing exploding potion at Adegast again.

"Hahaha, I like this girl," said Eda, before conjuring a spell circle that conjured ice spikes to encase Adegast.

"So, these people at the end of his tentacles are fake," said Danielle, staring at each one of the people. "No wonder they were annoying."

"Wha… why are my items working on you?" asked Adegast, staring at Danielle.

"I tossed them," said Danielle, before stabbing Adegast with the toy sword only to see him shrink down not long afterwards. "What?"

"Well, that's the last time I take an outside referral," said Eda, picking up and eating Adegast. "Mmm. Oh, did you want some of that?"

"No," said Danielle, covering her mouth in disgust. "All yours."

"Well, I have to say you did good kid," said Eda, ruffling Danielle's hair. "I'll teach you some magic tonight."

"Thanks Eda," said Danielle, slightly blushing. "Think we can fly back. I really enjoy it."

"Sure, why not," said Eda, looking at Danielle. "Better idea."

"What are you doing?" asked Danielle, seeing Eda take out a blindfold and wrapping it around her eyes.

"Trust me," said Eda, getting Danielle to sit on her staff before sitting herself and King and taking off.

"Where are you taking me?" asked Danielle, nervous and gripping the staff tight.

"You'll see," said Eda, flying for quite a bit before stopping midair and taking the blindfold off Danielle.

"Huh…" said Danielle, looking at the isles below. "Whoa!"

"The bones of the Isles," said Eda, staring at the isles. "Up close, the Isles can be slimy…"

"And very stinky," said King, pointing his finger up.

"And gross. But if you look at it from a different perspective..." said Eda, tilting Danielle's head to the sky.

"It's beautiful," said Danielle, staring at the night sky before sighing. "You know what, I kinda do wish that I was the chosen one in that prophecy Adegast came up with."

"Really?" asked Eda, staring at Danielle.

"Yeah, I actually do love fantasy and imagining myself in them," said Danielle, deeply sighing. "Do you think I'm chosen…"

"Look, kid, everyone wants to believe they're "chosen". But if we all waited around for a prophecy to make us special," said Eda, chuckling. "We'd die waiting. And that's why you need to choose yourself."

"Does that mean you'll help me find my mom?" asked Danielle, leaning into Eda. "And give me my own staff?"

"Not yet," said Eda, pulling Danielle into a side hug. "But... someday."

"That's an interesting constellation," said Danielle, seeing a constellation above the isles head. "See right there."

"Huh…" said Eda, staring as well. "Never seen that one till now."

"Think it means something?" asked King, staring as well.

"That a grand adventure awaits us," said Danielle, stroking King's back.

Note: Danielle has the same cellphone as Luz, just a different phone covering: an orange covering with white angel wings and a dark blue star in the center

Owl Pellet #2

(Set this chapter at night)

"No!" screamed Danielle, staring at her cellphone. "My text! It didn't go through."

"Trying to sleep here," said King, curled up at the end of Danielle's futon.

"Sorry King," said Danielle, looking at King then her cellphone. "I just… wanted to let my dad know I was okay."
