- Maybe someday -
Alison was sitting on her living room couch folding clothes in the small coffee table in front of her. Her head filled with thoughts she would rather not have at that moment. She had a strange, somewhat uneasy feeling. She knew that she was feeling frustrated, sad, and maybe even a little disappointed. But there was no other choice, she had been the only one who could have changed things.
A knock on the door interrupted her thoughts. Alison walked to the front door and opened it.
"Hey Alison" called the voice outside.
"Come in" Alison answered.
Spencer walked inside, along with Aria who greeted Alison.
"Sorry for the mess, I'm folding some clothes that I'm going to donate" she said moving the boxes to the floor so the girls could sit.
They both stood in the middle of the room, looking at Alison and then back at each other.
"We wanted to talk to you…" said Aria looking a little nervous.
Alison stopped what she was doing and looked up at the girls in front of her.
"Did something happen?" asked Alison, hands in her hips.
"You were kind of quiet this morning during brunch" started Spencer, taking a seat on one of the couches.
"I was a little bit tired; I've been getting rid of old things and doing some clean up around the house" said Alison, folding a t shirt she had in her hands.
"We all know that's not true" spoke Aria, playing with her hands.
"There is no other reason…" started Alison.
"Maybe the fact that Emily is getting married tomorrow" interrupted Spencer.
The room stayed was quiet for a few seconds. The three girls looked at each other.
"I…" said Alison, not able to finish a sentence.
"You can talk to us, Alison" said Aria, walking up to her and rubbing her arm "we can see this is really affecting you"
"We noticed since the day she told all of us in the brew" said Spencer, a look of concern on her face.
Alison turned around and walked to the window, she looked outside; her gaze looked lost; the sun's rays reflected in her bright blue eyes.
"I wish I didn't care about it" she cleared her throat "I can't get the idea of seeing her being happy with someone else, when I always had the hope of one day making her happy myself. That I will have to swallow the butterflies that she makes me feel every time I see her. That I'm about to lose the person who made me feel loved, despite knowing that I wasn't completely perfect. For many years I kept pushing her away, hiding what I really felt for her, after everything she had done for me.
I was always in love with her, but I never had the courage to admit it. And I can't pretend that I'm not anymore, because I'd be lying…"
"You have to tell her, Ali…" said Spencer, walking to stand behind Alison.
"You know I can't do that" said Alison, turning around to face the girls.
"She deserves to know," said Aria "it's just going to keep hurting you if you don't get it out".
"I don't want to hurt her" whispered Alison "but I can't keep lying to her either".
Whilst Spencer and Aria visited Alison, Hanna was at Emily's house, helping her prepare the last things she needed.
"This is such a beautiful dress" said Hanna as she placed the dress on a hook on the wall "don't you dare take it off the bag, I swear if something happens to it, I'll be pissed"
"You're more worried about my wedding than you were for yours Hanna," laughed Emily.
"I'm just happy for you Em" said Hanna sitting on Emily's bed "how do you feel?"
"I'm excited, but I also feel terrified" said Emily, letting out a long breath "this is such a big step in our relationship"
"Where is Paige by the way?" said Hanna looking around.
"She went to pick up her parents from the airport, they should be here any minute," said Emily.
The girls kept talking and a few minutes later they heard the front door open. They walked down to the living room to find Paige and her parents; they all greeted each other and made their way to the kitchen. Emily opened a bottle of wine, and everybody started conversating. Hanna's phone started ringing.
"Hey, what's up?" said Hanna as she answered her phone "you did what!?" she yelled.
"Is everything okay?" asked Emily confused.
"Yeah, sorry I need to go. Caleb broke a pipe under the sink and needs my help" she said, she hugged Emily "I'll see you tomorrow"
She said bye to Paige and her parents and walked outside, she hopped in her car and put the phone in her ear once again.
"Are you nuts!?" she exclaimed "why would you ask Alison about her feelings for Emily a day before her wedding!?"
"We were worried Hanna" said Aria trough the other end of the line.
"Emily's getting married Aria, what part of that do you both not understand? you could've waited" there was a pause "what did she said anyway?"
Spencer and Aria told Hanna what Alison had said, Hanna looked back at Emily's house.
"We all know Emily's never stopped caring about Alison... but it's not our business to fix that, I need to go" she said hanging up the phone.
-The next day-
Everyone gathered around their seats as they waiter for the brides. The girls stood outside church waiting for Emily to arrive.
"Where's Alison?" asked Aria, looking around.
"She said she was on her way" replied Spencer.
Meanwhile, Emily grabbed her bouquet ready to walk down her room to meet Toby who was waiting for her down in the living room as he was going to ride with her on the limousine on their way to the ceremony.
There was a knock on her door.
"Emily?" spoke the voice outside.
"Alison?" asked Emily "come in"
Alison opened the door slowly, entering the room. Emily's eyes softened as she looked at Alison.
"You look beautiful Em" said Alison, looking at Emily's dress.
"Thank you, Ali, you do to" said Emily "that color really fits you"
There was a small pause as both girls glanced at each other.
"Em, there is something you need to know…" started Alison.
"What is it?" said Emily, frowning her eyebrows a little confused.
"You deserve to be happy Emily" said Alison "but I can't keep pretending and lying to myself about my feelings for you"
Emily's mouth slightly opened, but she couldn't get a word out.
"I know that this is not what you want to hear right now" Alison felt a lump in her throat "I can't believe it took me all these years to be able to admit how I truly feel about you…"
"Why are you telling me this now?" Emily interrupted.
"You deserve to know," said Alison.
"Things could've been so different" replied Emily "for so many years, you did a wonderful job convincing me that my feelings for you were totally one sided"
"And I regret every second of it" said Alison, trying not to cry.
"It's too late for that, Alison" said Emily "and even if I'm not ready to let you go, I have to".
"I'm sorry Emily," said Alison before there was a knock on the door.
"Emily?" said Toby peeking in "we have to go" he said "sorry Alison, I didn't know you were here"
"I'll better go, don't want the bride to be late" said Alison walking away before turning to look at Emily one last time "I hope she makes you happy, you deserve it"
Alison walked out the room and Toby and Emily stayed in the room for a couple minutes. About 15 minutes later Alison arrived at the church. Everybody was standing around waiting for Emily and Paige.
"Ali, where have you been?" asked Hanna.
"Let's go, Emily's about to arrive" said Alison, ignoring Hanna's question and walking inside.
Spencer, Aria, and Hanna followed behind her and made their way to the front row. About five minutes passed when the piano started playing, everyone stood up as Paige walked down the aisle, arm in arm with her dad. As she passed by, Spencer peeked at Alison who was looking down at her hands.
"Were you at Emily's?" she asked quietly.
"I made a terrible mistake Spencer" responded Alison.
"Are you talking about telling her just now, or never telling her until now?" asked Spencer.
"Shhhh" said Aria as the piano started playing again.
The girls turned around to the church's door to see Emily standing there. In one arm was Toby, and Pam on the other side.
She walked down the aisle as everybody watched her. When she got to the front, she side eyed the girls, but continued looking to the front to where Paige was.
Alison looked at her, concerned about ruining everything.
Everyone sat down and pastor proceeded with the ceremony…
"Paige McCullers, do you take Emily Catherine Fields to love, care for and respect for the rest of your lives, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?"
"Yes, I do" said Paige, smiling.
"Emily Catherine Fields, do you take Paige McCullers to love, care for and respect for the rest of your lives, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?"
Emily took a quick glance at her friends who smiled, then at Alison. She could see all her emotions in her face. Her bright blue eyes staring directly at her. She felt the world stopping for a second. Alison turned her sigh away when she felt Spencer hold her hand.
Emily returned her eyes at Paige.
"I do."
