Chapter 11: Halloween Fun and Frights
Happy Halloween everyone! I'm here with a Halloween Special! I've been thinking about this one for a while and I hope you like what I have planned. I'd also like to thank Superherotimefan for giving me an idea for one scene in this chapter. I hope you like what I have planned. Please Review and Enjoy.
It was Halloween Day and all over the city the people were getting ready for the holiday, be it trick-or-treating, costumes, fun with friends and/or family, or just doing something fun at night.
Well almost everyone.
Slowly waking up, Luz was in her room when her phone alarm went off.
Groaning, she turned it off. "Why did I set this thing if I was gonna beat it anyway?"
Getting up she slowly opened the window and saw tons of kids in costumes causing her eyes to widen in horror.
In Minato's room, Minato was sleeping in bed when suddenly the door swung open.
"Minato wake up!" Luz yells shaking him awake.
"Wha?! Luz, what is it?" Minato groans.
"We're under attack! They're everywhere!" Luz panics.
"What?! The Emperor's Coven is here?!" Minato panics.
"Worse!" Luz opened his curtains and saw many kids dressed up in costumes, quite a few as monsters. Anyone else would love it but these two witches were terrified.
"Oh, sweet Titan! Luz defensive positions!" Minato said.
From her room, Eda and King were sound asleep when they heard the sound of furniture moving.
"Ugh, what is going on?" King asks.
"The kids are doing something." Eda groans.
Slowly getting up Eda was about to scold them when they saw Luz and Minato had barricaded the doors.
"Whoa! What the hell are you kids doing?!" Eda said.
"We're under attack, Eda! By zombies, monsters, and a wide variety of princesses!" Luz declares grabbing her staff.
"Wait what?" Eda said confused.
"They're right outside! But if they think we're going down without a fight they got another thing coming!" Minato said grabbing his staff and Excalibur.
They were about to leap out the window but Eda grabbed them by their shirts and yanks them back in.
"Stop right there you two! Those aren't real monsters! They're little kids they're getting ready for trick-or-treating tonight." Eda said.
"Trick-or-treating?" Minato said confused as King walked in.
"Yeah, it's what kids do on Halloween. They dress up in costumes and they go around asking for candy." Eda explains.
"Seriously have you two been living under a rock all month? How do you not know about trick-or-treating?" King asks.
"Well, how do you not know your reflection in the store window isn't another cat?" Minato counters.
"Hey! That guy is a jerk." King glares.
"Listen, kids, I know you're used to living with dangers around every corner but Halloween might be one of those days you can let your guard down," Eda said.
"So what do humans do on Halloween?" Luz asks.
"Well besides dressing up in costumes, they can do whatever. See scary movies, eat tons of junk food, hang out with friends, but everyone loves the Halloween festival." Eda said.
"A festival?" Both teens said interested.
"Yeah and as for me, I celebrate Halloween by scaring the pants off people," Eda said.
"Oh really?" Minato smirks.
"I can scare kids. You don't wanna see that side of me." Eda teases.
"If you say so, Eda." Luz giggles. "Since part of Halloween is hanging out with friends let's call ours maybe they can help us."
"Sounds good to me." Minato nods.
"Hey! Don't forget to put all my furniture back where it was." Eda reminds.
"Right sorry." Both cringed getting to work.
"So how am I going to scare those two?" Eda asks.
"Please, you aren't that scary." King scoffs.
"Oh yeah? Well, what do you think…of this?!" Eda pulls out a cucumber and instantly King screams.
"Keep that thing away from me!" King said running behind the couch in fear making Eda burst into laughter.
"Oh man, I love Halloween." Eda laughs holding her sides.
In another part of town, Lilith was waiting outside a store and saw kids running around in costumes.
"Ugh, Halloween. One of the worst days of the year." Lilith shudders.
"Speak for yourself." Mr. X said coming out with coffee. "I love these seasonal drinks. Have you tried the Mummy Mochas? Delicious."
"How are we supposed to find clues on those witches' whereabouts? Everywhere we look there's something that could pass for them." Lilith said gesturing to some girls dressed like witches with pointy hats and broomsticks.
"Hmm, good point. What do you think Jenny?" Mr. X asks sipping his drink.
Pausing Jenner points to a flyer for the festival tonight. On it, it had a special header Masquerade Night of Frights.
"Ooh, Jenny. Jenny. Jenny. I love the way you think." Mr. X said.
"Hmm, sometimes the best place to hide is in plain sight." Lilith pauses curious.
"Plus I love wearing a good mask. Adds such a nice flair of mystery." Mr. X said taking a sip and licking the cream off his lips.
Meanwhile, at school, we see Minato and Luz talking with their friends and notice some of the students had even dressed up.
"Willow, are you guys sure none of these are real monsters?" Luz asks.
"We're sure Luz." Willow giggles.
"Come on guys, don't be so nervous," Gus said taking the hats off their heads and revealing their ears.
"Gus what are you doing?!" Minato panics.
"We can't let people see us like this," Luz said.
"Yes you can, Halloween is the one day of the year you guys don't have to hide," Willow said as Skara walked by.
"Hey guys, nice touch with the pointy ears. Going fantasy costumes tonight?" Skara asks.
"Uh…" Pausing both teens didn't know how to respond as Skara walked away.
"She didn't even look twice at us," Luz said in disbelief.
"I told you, Halloween is like the best time to just relax and have fun," Willow said when Akko came in wearing a white witches' outfit with a pointy hat and a white shooting star-shaped mask.
"Happy Halloween!" Akko said.
"Wow Akko, subtle." Gus chuckles.
"What? Soon I'll be able to say this costume is my real witch's outfit." Akko said.
"Uh hate to break it to you Akko but real witches don't wear traffic cones on their heads." Minato snickers.
"And what's with the mask?" Luz asks.
"What do you mean? That's the theme for tonight's party." Akko said.
"We're all dressing up. You guys should dress up too." Willow suggests.
"I guess, so what do you do at these parties?" Minato asks.
"Oh it's a blast. You have fun, eat lots of food, play games, and even dance to spooky music." Ezra lists.
"Plus people always try to scare you," Gus said.
"You guys like to be scared?" Luz asks.
"Just on Halloween. It adds to the fun." Gus said.
"Well, I guess we could use a little fun." Luz smiles.
"That's the spirit, but make sure whatever costume you pick you have something to cover your face," Willow said as they walked away to get them their costumes.
At Eda's store, King was walking to his spot by the window and saw his reflection.
"You again?! I told you to get lost! This is my store!" King yells running into the window and falling backward.
Walking over, Soos gasps. "Oh my god King! What happened? Who did this to you?" Soos asks before noticing his reflection. "Did you do this?! You monster!"
Nearby Eda was bursting into laughter. "Oh man, sometimes it's just too easy."
Suddenly her phone beeped meaning she got a text.
Looking at it she saw Luz sent her a message. "We're going to the festival with friends tonight. Be back late." It read.
"Nice they'll help fill the kids in on how to handle Halloween," Eda said before reaching under the counter to pull out a Grim Reaper costume with a scythe. "Meaning I can have my own fun tonight."
At the costume store, we see Akko waiting as Ezra steps out dressed in a green ranger costume with a bow on his back and a green snake mask on his face.
"Ooh nice one Ezra, but why the snake mask?" Akko asks.
"I wanted something to make me stand out," Ezra said.
"Fair enough. Hey guys you coming?" Akko calls out.
"Be right there." Stepping out next we see Willow dressed in a black devil costume with horns on her head, a pitchfork in her hands, and a black and green mask on her face.
"Ooh classic Willow," Ezra said.
"It suits you," Akko said making her giggle.
"Thanks. Plus I can do this." Willow playfully jabs them both with her pitchfork making them yelp.
Next, Gus came out dressed like a sci-fi character with a red costume and a golden visor covering his eyes.
"Whoa, Gus way to mix it up," Willow said.
"Who needs a mask when you got this?" Gus smiles fixing his visor.
"And now the final two," Akko said.
As Minato and Luz stepped out we saw Luz had dressed up like Azura from the book complete with a green wig, and a white mask with green and purple highlights along the edges. Minato was dressed in a swordsman-like outfit with pants and a sleeveless shirt that was a mix of indigo and black, padding on his right shoulder, a red cape around his neck and hanging down his back, and a metal glove over his left arm. On his head was a wig of spiky white hair, on his face a dark blue metallic mask, and hanging on his back was a large fake sword. Both had their pointy witch ears on display.
"Oh now that's a look." Willow grins loving it.
"Whoa who are you guys?" Ezra asks.
"I am the Good Witch Azura and this is my trusted ally the Blade Master Kaiden." Luz declares.
"Kaiden? I don't think I've heard of him." Gus said.
"I do, he was a wandering warrior fighting for whoever would hire him. At least until he crossed paths with Azura." Akko said.
"Then he along with Hecate became Azura's closest friends and teammates," Luz adds.
"And during which he begins to open up and enjoy the world around him and make memories." Minato smiles.
"Plus thanks to him Azura ends up in a bit of a love triangle between her, him, and Hecate," Akko whispers to Willow, Ezra, and Gus.
"Ooh I gotta read that book," Willow said.
"But either way you guys pull the costumes off well," Ezra said.
"Thanks guys," Luz said.
Paying for the costumes and masks all of them left.
"So uh what do you normally do at these Halloween festivals?" Minato asks.
"It's just a night for having fun, being with friends, and even meeting new people," Ezra said.
"Plus they have tons of cool prizes for the contests," Gus said.
"Contests? Like what?" Luz asks.
"Ooh they got a ton. Scariest Jack-O-Lantern, costume contest, and the big one. Scariest Car." Willow said.
"People give their cars crazy tricked-out Halloween designs and the best one wins a big cash prize and bragging rights for the whole year," Ezra said.
"Wow, Halloween sounds fun." Luz smiles.
"Oh it is. And wait until you hear the spooky stories of this city." Willow said.
"Well what are we waiting for?" Luz said.
As the night was beginning, they saw the whole street was filled with people in masks and costumes eating food, playing games, dancing, and just having fun.
Looking at it in awe, Minato and Luz definitely weren't feeling as scared as they were this morning.
"The contest judging isn't for another hour, how about we all do some exploring?" Akko suggests.
"Sounds good to me. Let's meet over there so we can see the Halloween cars when they pull in." Willow points.
Nodding in agreement, all of them went to explore.
At a dessert table, Akko and Gus were eating Halloween cupcakes.
"So Gus I've been working on the notes Minato and Luz have been giving me. How are you doing?" Akko asks.
"Hmm I'm still getting the hang of it, the hard part is sometimes my illusions don't always do what they're told. I tried making a paper airplane and it refolded itself into an origami swan." Gus said.
"I'm a little slow on the progress myself." Reaching into her pocket, Akko pulls out a potion. "A week's worth of lessons and I finally figured out a smokescreen potion."
"No one said learning to be witches was gonna be easy," Gus said.
"True that," Akko said as they clinked cupcakes before eating them.
As Luz made her way to the booth, she grabbed the glass of punch at the same time as someone else.
Looking up she saw a girl dressed like Hecate with a purple mask on her face.
"Azura?" She gasps in a familiar voice.
"Whoa cool Hecate costume. You're the first person I've seen dressed like that." Luz smiles.
"Now if only we could find a Kaiden, we'd have the whole trio." The Hecate girl smirks making Luz gasp.
"My best friend is dressed up as Kaiden right now," Luz said making her grin.
"Oh please tell me I can get a picture with you guys," Hecate said cupping her hands together.
"As long as we can get one with you." Luz smiles.
"Deal." Hecate smiles.
Nearby, we see Willow playing the ring toss as she tries to throw hoops over witches' hats with Ezra nearby.
"Man if Minato and Luz saw this game." Willow giggled predicting their reaction but got no response from Ezra. "Ezra?"
Turning around she saw he looking at Skara who was dressed like a pirate before she briefly put on a red mask.
"Like Aaarrgh. Enjoy the cookie kids." Skara said handing out treats to little kids.
"Ezra? Ezra?" Willow asks waving a hand in front of his face.
"Huh? Oh yeah Willow you were saying something?" Ezra asks.
"Oh nothing," Willow smirks when Mr. X walks up to Skara wearing a flamboyant Mardi Gras mask.
"Ooh, cookie." He smiles taking one.
"Uh, aren't you a little old for this?" Skara asks.
"Too old for free treats? Are you mad?" He scoffs before walking away.
"Hey Ezra you mind getting me one?" Willow asks nudging him towards the stand.
"Whoa—hey there," Ezra said walking up to her.
"Hey." Skara said.
"Can I uh…cookies?" He points.
"Enjoy," Skara said handing him 2.
Sighing Ezra took them and walked back.
"Please don't say anything," Ezra said handing Willow a cookie.
"Believe me I don't think anyone needs to know," Ezra said.
Across from them, Luz and Hecate had met up with Minato.
"Say Azura," Minato said as people took their pictures.
"Azura." All three of them said as someone took their photos.
Handing them back their phones the three of them look at it.
"Wow we look good," Hecate said.
"Yeah, we look like the iconic book trio," Luz said.
"It's so cool to meet another Azura fan. Most people look at us weirdly because we like that series." Minato said.
"Are you kidding? It's the best series ever. Hecate is my favorite character." She smiles.
"Well then you my new friend have good taste." Luz smiles making Hecate giggle.
"Hey the Halloween cars are going to be here soon. You want to check them out?" Hecate suggests.
"Absolutely." Luz nods.
"You girls go on ahead, I'm just gonna grab a quick bite to eat," Minato said.
"Don't take too long," Luz said as he walked out.
"You two seem close," Hecate said.
"Best friends since were little kids. Any of your friends here?" Luz asks.
"Uh, not really. They aren't real fans of this kind of thing." Hecate admits with a frown.
"Well, it's their loss. I'm having lots of fun hanging out with you." Luz said playfully nudging her making Hecate blush softly.
"Yeah, you guys are pretty fun too." Hecate smiles.
"Come on, I saw some pretty tasty Fruit Blood over there." Luz points.
"You mean Fruit Punch?" Hecate raises an eyebrow.
"Is that what it's called? Huh?" Luz said taking that in.
"You're weird." Hecate giggles. "I like weird."
As Minato turned a corner, he made his way through the crowd and ended up bumping into someone.
"Oh man, I'm sorry," Minato said revealing he bumped into a girl who was dressed in a steampunk outfit with a leather skirt, a white shirt, two fake guns attached to a belt at her hips, a top hat over her head to show only salmon-colored tips, a red and gray mask on her face.
"Whoa cool costume." The Steampunk girl said.
"Thanks, I'm uh big into fantasy. I've never seen anything like your costume before." Minato said.
"You mean to tell me you've never heard of Steampunk? Oh man dude have you been living under a rock or something?" She said in disbelief.
"Uh something like that. Mind telling me about it?" Minato said.
"It's only the coolest combo ever. It's like future technology with a retro look. And it's not just steam, there's even magic." The Steampunk girl said getting his attention.
"Magic huh? Cool, know any good books that have it?" Minato asks.
"Heck yeah, I do." She grins taking out her phone to show him the list.
Soon it was time for the Halloween car contest. As all the teens made their way over, we saw tons of cars lining up for the competition. Little did they know some shadowy figures were making their way around back where all the car keys were kept.
One was an orange car with a big grin on its hood and a green top to make it look like a spooky glowing jack-o-lantern.
"That one looks fun," Akko said.
"Funs good but I want spooky," Willow said.
Another one was black and had fog coming from the inside as tombstones were painted on the sides and fake bats were hanging from the sideview windows as if they were flying around it.
"Now that says Halloween," Gus said.
The third one was designed after the one from Ghostbusters with its theme music playing.
"What is that?" Luz asks.
"You've never seen Ghostbusters? Oh wow, you are missing out." Hecate said.
The 4th was a large green van that was designed to look like Frankenstein with tesla coils and electric noises echoing from inside it.
"Oh wow, how awesome is that?" The Steampunk girl asks.
"Pretty cool," Minato said.
The 5th one however got the worst cheers. It was designed with masks from Winnie the Pooh but they were turned into horror monsters making little kids cry and several people boo it.
"That movie sucked!" Ezra yells.
"Boo!" Skara yells as the owner was getting tons of hate.
And finally, the last car was an SUV that had jagged teeth for the front, cauldrons of red, green, and orange smoke hanging from the top of it, witches cackling from inside and broomsticks hanging off both edges.
Seeing this Minato and Luz couldn't believe this is what humans thought witches were like.
"Alright folks, while we park the cars the judges will declare a winner very shortly." The Announcer said.
As the drivers went to get their cars several figures in black attacked the drivers and stole the first 3 cars.
"They're stealing the cars!" Ezra gasped as the crowd looked in horror.
"Someone call the police!" The Steampunk girl said.
Looking at each other Luz and Minato nod.
"Good idea I'll go get them," Luz said.
"Wait where are you guys going?" Hecate asks.
"It was great meeting you both. Hope we run into each other again." Minato said as they ran off.
Confused both girls watched their new friends run off.
"I never even got his phone number." The Steampunk girl said.
Running down an alley, Luz and Minato took off their masks.
"And just when I was enjoying this holiday!" Luz snaps.
"We can whine later! Let's teach these idiots a lesson for ruining our fun!" Minato said as both made magic circles causing them to change into Witch and Warlock.
Drawing Owlbert and Ayden both hopped on their staffs and flew out.
As cars 4 and 6 were racing out the 5th car was lagging behind when suddenly Witch flew in.
"Oh no you don't!" Firing many shards of ice they pierced the tiers causing it to swerve.
Flying in Warlock summons an abomination who stops the car before slamming it to the ground.
"My car!" The owner panics but no one even looks in his direction.
"It's them!" Lilith gasped as Mr. X and Jenner spotted the two magic users flying after the other cares.
"Ooh now it's a party." Mr. X grins as they ran after them.
"Hey what about my car?" The owner asks.
"Ever hear of insurance?" Lilith asks not even glancing at him.
"And fyi that movie was terrible! You sir have terrible taste in cinema!" Mr. X called out as they ran to their truck.
"Wait, were those the people in suits Luz and Minato warned us about?" Willow said as Ezra, Gus, and Akko paused in horror.
"Good thing it's Halloween because things just got really scary." Gus gulps.
"Come on!" Akko said as they ran out.
As the remaining 5 Halloween cars were racing through the streets, we saw Witch and Warlock flying after them.
"We got company!" The leader yells seeing the duo in the rearview mirror.
Diving down, Warlock drew Excalibur and slashed the tires of Jack O Lantern car making the car swerve off the road and come to a screeching halt.
Before the criminal could escape Warlock zaps him with a bolt of electricity paralyzing him.
As Witch flew in on the Frankenstein Van and the Graveyard car she created two plant glyphs and made two giant vines grab the cars and lift them off the ground.
Panicking the criminals were yanked out and tied up with more vines.
As the Ghostbusters car swerved down an alley to avoid being followed it ended up running right into a large Abomination who surrounded the car.
From the inside, the sound of muffled screams echoed before they were launched out of the car and stuck to the wall.
As the Witch Car was trying to make its escape both magic users flew in.
Firing Wind and Light magic, the two blind the driver causing him to swerve into a light post and crash.
"That's for ruining our fun night," Warlock said as they landed down to see the leader was unconscious. "Get some rest, they usually pick up the garbage in an hour."
"Well, these cars have seen better days but nothing that can't be fixed." Witch said.
"Still good work." Warlock smiles.
As both fist bumped suddenly they were both zapped making them scream in pain.
Falling to the ground before they could recover two nets were fired and wrapped around them.
"You two really shouldn't lower your guard." Mr. X said.
Running around the corner, their friends gasp seeing the 3 government agents approach the two witches.
"Grab the staffs!" Lilith said as Jenner grabbed both staffs but all three Palismans were not happy with someone else other than their owners holding them.
Groaning in pain, Warlock saw Mr. X pick up Excalibur.
"Ooh nice sword. You may be dangerous but you got style, I'll give you that." Mr. X said.
"Hey that's mine." Warlock groans.
"Not anymore. Now don't make this any harder than it needs to be." Lilith said reaching to pull down Witch's face cover but Witch tried to bite down on her hand forcing her to pull back and something fell out of her pocket. "You really are wild."
Witch was about to say something when she noticed the name tag on the floor and saw the name L. Clawthorne surprising her.
'Wait…Clawthorne?' Witch thought as Lilith picked it up.
"Well since you two won't go the easy way, I guess we need to bring you in the hard way," Lilith said.
"We need to do something and fast," Willow said. "Please tell me you guys know some spells."
"I'll get the weapons; you guys get them out of there," Ezra said.
Taking out her potion, Akko took a deep breath. "Okay make it count guys."
As they were about to be taken away the potion crashed down in front of them causing a giant cloud of smoke to erupt around them.
"What is this?" Lilith gasps.
"They must have cast a spell when we weren't looking." Mr. X gasps.
While they were distracted Willow used her magic to create a thorny vine to cut them free and pull them to safety.
Taking out his guitar, Ezra strums it creating large magic notes to knock the weapons out of Jenner's hands allowing Ayden and Owlbert to fly out
"They took the staffs!" Mr. X gasps.
"Where'd they go?!" Lilith said as Witch and Warlock flew above them.
"Better luck next time!" Witch said as they flew off into the sky.
"After them!" Lilith said as they got in the truck and drove after them.
Coming out of hiding we see the real Witch and Warlock emerge from an alley revealing the ones they were following were an illusion by Gus.
"Guys…you saved our lives." Luz smiled as they pulled down their masks to show their faces.
"We had pretty good teachers," Ezra said holding out their weapons.
"Owlbert, Stringbean." Luz smiles hugging them close.
"Ayden." Minato smiles.
"Sorry your first Halloween was such a mess guys," Ezra said.
"Yeah if we hadn't told you to take it easy today you wouldn't have almost gotten captured," Willow said.
"Can we just go home? I think we've had enough scares for one day." Minato asks.
"Yeah no arguments here," Gus said.
"Hold on, let me get one thing before we leave," Akko said running ahead.
Back at the festival, we see Akko buying something from a booth before leaving.
Nearby the Hecate girl looking for Luz and Minato.
"Man, where did they go?" She asks when her phone rings. "Hello?"
"Hey, Mittens we're here to pick you up. You coming?" A female voice said.
"Yeah, I'll be right there." Sighing she made her way to the parking lot where a teenage boy and girl with dark green hair were waiting. These were Edric and Emira.
Getting in Hecate closed the door.
"So how was it? Did you make any new friends?" Emira asks.
"Yeah a few, but…they had to leave." Reaching up, Hecate took off her red hair revealing it was a wig and that Hecate was actually Amity.
"Well maybe if you're lucky meet them again someday," Edric said as they drove off.
Nearby the Steampunk girl looked at her phone.
"Hmm, I wonder if I'll ever meet that guy again? He was fun." She smiles before grabbing her skateboard and leaving.
Back at Eda's house, some kids knocked at the door.
"Trick or Treat!" They called out when Eda came out dressed like the Grim Reaper.
"Boo!" Eda yells swinging the scythe and stopping short of them causing the kids to scream. "Just messing you kids. Here for that you get extra."
Handing the kids candy, they ran out quickly while Eda just chuckled loving this.
As the kids ran down the street, we saw Willow, Akko, Gus, and Ezra walking Minato and Luz back. All of them holding goodie bags full of candy.
"Mmm, Akko this is just what I needed." Luz smiles eating some chocolate.
"Nothing beats candy on Halloween," Akko said eating a Jolly Rancher.
"Thanks for everything guys. We owe you one." Minato said putting a lollypop in his mouth.
"Hey you guys have been doing that for us for way longer," Gus said eating some sour candy.
"Yeah it was pretty cool fooling those guys," Willow said eating gummy bats.
"Well it means a lot and we'll make it up to you," Minato said.
"Yeah, we'll teach you guys some really good magic," Luz said making them smile.
"Rest up guys. You need it." Ezra said as they made their way inside.
In the living room, Eda was eating popcorn while watching a movie.
Your wretched little lives
Have all been cursed
'Cause of all the witches working
I'm the worst
I put a spell on you
And now you're mine
Watch out, watch out, watch out, watch out!
She ain't lying
Seeing this Eda laughed. "These ladies may be evil but they know how to party," Eda said before eating a handful of popcorn when Luz and Minato walked in. "Hey kids, wanna join me for a movie?"
"Eda, we have something important to ask you," Luz said.
Pausing the movie, Eda looked at them.
"What's up?" Eda asks.
"Earlier tonight we were attacked by those people in suits and I saw a name tag on one of them. It was labeled L. Clawthorne." Luz said making Eda's eyes widen.
"Eda, do you know who L. Clawthrone is?" Minato asks.
"Yeah, I do and her name is actually Lilith Clawthorne…she's, my sister." Eda declares horrifying both teens.
And true to her word, Eda had found a way to scare them, but I don't think even she wanted it to be like this.
