Chapter 4
As much as Harry was dreading the lesson all the first year Gryffindor's headed down to the grounds for their first flying lesson. Alice wasn't sure if this was going to work for her. Despite having the powers of the Winter Court, flying was something that she was sure none of the Sidhe could do. Unless you had wings or something. And since her powers from her father's side hadn't yet activated, she doubted the broom would do anything for her. This was the first time that she was panicking.
"Are you alright?" Neville asked.
"Not a fan of heights," Alice lied.
"Yeah, not really looking forward to this lesson," he admitted.
The lesson was taught by Madam Hooch, who was a woman with short, silver, hair and yellow eyes like a hawk. She barked orders at them, which they all had to comply with. A few moments later Professor Dumbledore arrived, spoke to Madam Hooch, and she said, "Miss Dresden, the Headmaster would like a word with you."
"Someone is in trouble," Hermione taunted.
Alice ignored her and followed the Headmaster away from all those brooms.
"Thanks," she said to Dumbledore.
"No problem," he said. "I had a feeling that having you take that lesson would have blown up in our faces."
"Because the broom wouldn't have done anything."
"Correct," he said.
Alice spent the rest of the lesson thinking about a couple of things. Most importantly the Defense Professor. Despite the fact that her magic from her father's side of the family hadn't activated the magic that she got from her mantel told her a lot. She was going to include it in her next letter home. Everything about the classroom smelled of some seriously bad black magic. It was as though a spell had been cast that was connected to a certain person. The magic felt like black tar, as it covered a bird. The spell ensured that the person couldn't escape the effects of the spell.
Alice decided to ask the Headmaster a question about the tar-like feeling that she was getting from the room.
Of course finding the Headmaster was hard. It seemed that he was holed up wherever he happens to be. When the class returned from the Flying Lesson Ron told her that Neville had gotten hurt and that Harry might get expelled.
"For what reason?" Alice asked him.
"For not following instructions," he said. "Merlin, he doesn't need this right now. And I know that Malfoy and his friends are bragging about it in their stupid common room."
Alice agreed.
However, when Harry got back he told Alice and Ron that he had been made Seeker. Alice knew nothing of the game, but Ron got all excited. So she figured that it was a good thing. Alice promised that she would go to his first game to watch. During dinner Malfoy and his gang of morons approached the Gryffindor table.
"Having a last meal, Potter," he taunted. "So when are you taking the train home to the Muggles?"
"You're much cockier now that both your feet on the ground," Alice said.
He glared at Alice and then said, "How about a wizard's duel. Wands only, no contact," he said. "I bet you've never heard of a wizard duel?"
Alice stood up and said, "But, I have. And I really doubt that you can even do one. However, as you have initiated a duel, then we should have someone referring it." Alice turned to Seamus. "Anyone to referee a match?"
"Flitwick," he answered.
"Never mind," Malfoy snarled.
"No, you wanted Harry to get in trouble. So, guess what. We duel."
"I said-."
"Is there a problem?" McGonagall said.
"Malfoy wanted Harry to duel him," Alice told her.
"Don't say anymore, Dresden," she said. "The three of you are following me to Professor Snape's office. I think that he'll stop this nonsense in its tracks."
And Alice, Harry, and Ron all grinned as they were taken away. The next morning Alice was heading down to Potions when she saw the Headmaster talking to Professor Flitwick. This was her chance. She walked over to them and said, "I don't mean to interrupt, but I have something that I need to talk to you about."
The tone told anyone that she was serious.
"Come to my office, later, I love Toffees," he told Alice, and she figured that toffees was a password.
"Thanks," Alice said and she headed for Potions.
Alice had learned, from the first lesson, that Harry did have a small amount of talent in the class. She helped Harry ignore Snape, who looked as though he had fed on way too many birds, and helped him make sure that everything was measured correctly. They were making a Knock Out Solution.
"The student that has the best one will be able to choose who to test it on."
That seem to have the effect of having Harry work as hard as he could to make sure the potion was correct. Because both of them had their target. When the lesson was almost over he came around to see the end result from everyone's cauldrons. Those that hadn't done it right, got Snape's usual snapping tone, but he said nothing to those that had gotten it right.
"It seems that Mr. Potter has at least a measure of talent," he told the class. "Unlike Miss Granger's potion, Potter's is the best of the class."
Alice breathed a huge sigh of relief.
"As such, he will get to choose who will be force to drink the Knockout Solution."
Snape poured a little of the completed potion into a goblet.
"Malfoy," Harry said, and I grinned.
"WHAT!" Malfoy said, the full effect of Harry's words hitting him. "NO, I'M NOT DOING IT. I'M NOT DRINKING ANYTHING-."
"SILENCE," Snape roared. "The point of making it is to use it. And I told the class the student with the best potion will get to try it out on another student. Potter and Dresden both paired up and produced the best potion out of everyone in the class. Therefore, you will drink it so that the students can tell what a correctly brewed potion does. I'm sure, godson, that it won't hurt your ego too much."
Alice and Harry both grinned at him, knowing that Malfoy had made a huge mistake. For Alice Point of View Malfoy made a member of the Red Court look bad when he tried to deny that he had tried to get someone into trouble.
"This is going to be too much fun," Alice told Harry.
Snape went over and handed the potion to Malfoy.
"Drink," he ordered.
Alice had never seen anyone look this scared in his life. Still, he drank it, and went face-first. Though Snape did catch him before he bled.
"Mr. Goyle, take him to the Hospital Wing," Snape ordered.
Goyle picked him up and left just as the bell rang. The lesson was over.
That afternoon Alice entered the Headmaster office for the first time. The man in question was looking over some papers and shaking his head. He looked up when she walked in.
"Miss Dresden, glad that you didn't forget," he told her.
"When something is important, sir, I don't forget," Alice said and then sat down.
"So, what did you want to talk to me about?" he asked her. "And would you like a lemon drop before we begin."
"No, thanks," she said, holding up her hand. "As you know I'm required to inform both of my parents if I find anything 'odd.'"
"Of course," he said.
"I've found something that brings me much worry," Alice said. "Something that you may have knowledge of."
"And what have you discovered?" Dumbledore asked him.
"A spell! On the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom," Alice said. "I believe the spell to be not new, but old."
"It's not that old," he said. "And it was placed by someone that has a direct connection to Harry."
"Who?"
"Tom Riddle," Dumbledore said. "I trust that you won't tell Harry what we're about to say."
"I won't tell Harry Potter, but I sure as hell will tell my father."
He nodded and said, "Tom Riddle, came to the castle shortly after I was made Headmaster. He wanted the Defense Against the Dark Arts position. However, I knew that this was an excuse to try and recruit more students to join his cause. I turned him down and he made sure that I regretted it."
"How does the curse work?" Alice asked him.
"It's designed to ensure that no Defense teacher lasts more than a year," Dumbledore said. "It's to make sure that students aren't ready for the outside world. A world that he intended to remake in his own image."
"Sounds like something that he would do," Alice said, thinking of all the stories that my father had told me, growing up, about some of the really nasty warlocks that he had faced.
Including the one that had taken people's second chances.
They all followed the same principle. You have something that you don't deserve to have and so I'm going to take it from you. Tom Riddle, or Voldemort, didn't like peace. He didn't like all those talented witches and wizards breathing air. He lacked any kind of logic and he lacked any kind of empathy.
"The only way to break the curse is to ensure that the caster is dead."
"Which is why I know that Voldemort is still alive," Dumbledore said. "The curse is still active."
If Alice had anything to say about it, it wouldn't be for long.
Alice wrote another letter to her father, sending it the usual route. She knew that he would have an answer to the issue with the curse. She then opened her Charms book and got to work on the essay to the Nox Charm that she was half-way completed.

A/N: So Alice is the first person to find out, from Dumbledore, why the Defense Against the Dark Arts position is cursed. True to her word, she won't tell Harry Potter about it. On another note, I discovered that I have Harry's daughter as Alice, but wrote her as Lucy. She's Alice, not Lucy. This is what happens when your dead tired.
