Feedback: Yes, please

Summary: In this AU Mulder and Scully had finally crossed that line after Millennium but before Rush. I just see them more flirtatious with each other and their banter seems more relaxed, not so chippy and filled with tension. In one of the scenes in Rush they are standing in a hallway when Scully asks Mulder to speak to Tony's friends "for me". I can't think of another episode where she asks him to "do" something for "me". Now I want to believe (although it is out of view) she is playing with the opening to his jacket while she is eyeing him up and asking that question. So, this my version of the morning of this case and some thoughts during the case from Mulder's POV.

Disclaimer: No copyright infringement intended again, the show and the characters belong to CC to whom I am thankful for because without his determination to keep things platonic between these two we would not have this great fanfiction. No money, and probably no imagination so, I'm not really court material. I appreciate any and all reviews.

Scully Gave Ma a Rush

On the eve of the new millennial, I kissed Scully in the lobby of the hospital. The kiss could have destroyed our partnership, but I took the chance of a lifetime. It took a long time to even get the fortitude to test the waters of her reception to it. As the crowds cheered the new year and millennium, I watched her smile at the TV. Scully's smile is rare so when I get to see it, I love to watch her, the creases in her cheeks, the corners of her mouth turn upwards, and her eyes sparkle. I have wanted her for six years, more so after her cancer scare and her near death in New York at the hands of that twit Ritter. I couldn't lose Scully, the woman who breathed life into mine without knowing it. I know I had done things ass backwards, but our relationship wasn't exactly a picture next to the word normal in the dictionary.

I have tried to drop hints to her at various times but, seeing how I am not the ladies' man people think I am my hints were awkward at best. First, I told her 'I was a little turned on' when she identified a North American P-51 Mustang at the bottom of the ocean from a snowy monitor. Then I asked her if we 'should be picking out China patterns. Then there was the time I asked her to 'marry me' and lastly, I told her 'I love you' while recuperating in the hospital after doing something incredibly stupid, again. I know she thought I was trippin' on pain meds, but I knew what I was saying, and I had the clarity I have right now. This doesn't include calling her my constant, my touchstone, my one in five billion, and the woman who made me a whole person. Only a dork like me would ask her to marry me before I told her I loved her, but our relationship isn't the widely understood definition of the term significant other so, why change now.

Yesterday morning I woke up in Scully's bed. Her room is bright, the window lets in a lot of light when the blinds are open, soft cream-colored paint on the walls and her bed is so comfortable. The small black and white photo I gave her for her birthday was on her dresser. The front of the hospital where we shared our first kiss. I must have done okay giving her that since it was still there. I compare the feeling of waking up next to her or her in my arms to the feeling of utter contentment, satisfaction, and disbelief. She's usually up before me but we watched Mars Attacks last night and then went to bed. It started out as an innocent attempt at sleep but that didn't last long. We couldn't help it; we started talking and then touching and the rest of the night was spent creating sound waves and motion ripples in the surface tension of her room. She laughed when I described our lovemaking that way. I told her I was trying to be more scientific about my world, to which she told me to stick with aliens and conspiracies and she would take care of science. I agreed, knowing full well I would give her anything she asked for. Scully knew the power she had over me, but never used it against me and I appreciate that it would have been so easy for her.

We were supposed to have a couple of days off but a call from Skinner put us in Virginia on a case that afternoon. A deputy had been attacked and killed. It didn't start as anything extraordinary until the local coroner went to make the external exam and found the Deputy's glasses embedded in the back of his skull. It wasn't a regular on duty death, it was overkill, an attack filled with such rage it left him with a softball sized hole in his head. This was no ordinary murder this was savagery plain and simple.

When Skinner called, we both just about jumped out of bed. I was wake but lost in watching her sleep listening to her breathe it was so soothing. It gives me time to really look at her. The small proportionate features, her copper hair, her freckles and the small mole on her lip she tried to conceal. I love them all they give her that girl-next-door look. Her small but full mouth, her lips. I swallow hard yes, her lips. She was awakened by the ring of her phone. She jerked awake and reached for the phone answering it as if it we me. Only after she realized it was Skinner did I lean over and begin kissing her neck with the full intent of flustering her. I am sure Skinner wondered what the hell was wrong with her, I don't think she gave him one coherent answer. I was all smiles when she told him she would call me to save him a phone call.

"One of these days he's going to figure it out, you know then what do we do." She said as she rolled over to me. "Your behavior was rude." She chastised me for flustering her, but I saw her smile. I kissed her, pulled back and laid on my back.

"It was meant to be. I don't think you strung two words together that had any meaning, it was perfect." I was pleased with myself in a childish, immature way. To get the enigmatic Doctor Scully to trip over her words or thoughts brought me great pleasure.

"He wants us in Virginia by 1500. Strange death of a Sheriff's Deputy needs investigation. I am not sure why we are going; it doesn't sound like an X-File."

"I guess we'll find out when we get there. C'mon, we'll grab lunch to go, although I was hoping for a few days alone with you."

"He'll just owe us more time when we get back. Maybe we should take a few days and get lost. You know you go to your mom's, and I'll go to mine." She said as she winked and kissed my shoulder.

"Are you talking about a secluded place in the woods where cell service is spotty."

"I am, time away from everything dark and dreary."

"Now that is how I like my Scully." I leaned over and kissed her neck earning me another wink but, out of bed she rolled, grabbing her robe and covering her perfect body.

I'll start the coffee, you shower first, I'll pack."

"We could shower together." I offered.

"I would take you up on that if we had time, but it's fake news Mulder, showering with a friend does not save water."

When we arrived in Pittsfield, Virginia we met with the coroner and then the Sheriff. Some questions and information led us to the local high school and a couple of students. I couldn't help but laugh when Scully moved me along when a young girl of high school age gave me the once over when we went to speak with Anthony at the Sheriff's Station. Scully wasted no time laying claim to me. She had nothing to worry about but that made me feel pretty good, it turned me on actually, what a surprise. The suspects were not who I expected, they included the Sheriff's son Max Harden, his girlfriend Chastity and a new student they befriended named Anthony or Tony as he preferred. Tony had been arrested for the Deputy's murder and the Sheriff gave us permission to speak with him.

After speaking with Tony, Scully and I spoke in the hallway about other possibilities since neither of us thought Anthony committed the murder of Deputy Foster. We stood in the hallway, and I could swear I experienced the first public display of affection from Scully who is usually pretty good and tempering her feelings in public, although it wouldn't have been noticed by anyone except me. I told her I thought there was a force at work here, either a territorial or spiritual entity.

Scully grabbed the edges of my coat, looked at me with those beautiful blues and said "Mulder, rather than spirits can we at least start with Tony's friends please, just for me? There's one person in particular I'd like to talk to." I nearly melted. To my recollection Scully has never asked me to do anything in an investigation 'for me'. It took everything I had not to kiss her right there. Her wish was granted without so much as a blink.

We went to the school and spoke with Chastity Raines. We caught up to her in the hallway between classes. Chastity stated she didn't think Tony killed the cop because he didn't have it in him. When asked if she did, she turned and said she had to go. Scully reminded her Tony could go to prison for the rest of his life if convicted. I told her if she knew anything this would be the time to mention it. Just then Max showed up, draped himself over her and spoke for Chastity saying unless we had a warrant, they would not be speaking to us. I let Max know I knew his father was the sheriff and asked him what he would think of his behavior. Max told me they were 'done here', then they walked away his slung arm around Chastity's neck.

As they brushed past us Max stopped and looked at Scully saying, "You must have been a Betty back in the day."

Scully repeated the term out loud as if it was a question "a Betty". Having her nose in medical journals most of time after work I was not surprised, she was unfamiliar with the context.

I was appalled at his blatant disrespect for Scully. I wanted to punch that kid so hard in his smug face, but I certainly didn't need that besides, I knew Scully had been a 'Betty' her entire life, she just never thought about it. I let the kid hear my last words "back in the day?"

Max was a spoiled, snotnose, belligerent kid who had no doubt used his 'get out of jail free' card several times since daddy was the Sheriff. This kid was trouble and we both knew it right after meeting him. Something about this kid was trouble and he had somehow pulled Chastity and Tony into his macabre game.

The investigation lasted until Max and Chastity lay dead in a cave at the edge of town the cause of death was labeled suspicious. We were unable to examine and research the cave as it had been filled with tons of concrete after the bodies were removed. Unclear of the source that provided Max and Chastity with their abilities, this case was closed but the mystery of the cave remains unsolved.

Either way I was pleased an innocent young man was released to continue his life, the murder of a deputy was solved, and the person responsible was dead, case solved. So, much happened in just a few days. Scully gave me my first PDA and I loved it. I knew it would be a while before I was granted such an honor again, so I just enjoyed the peek I received. Our relationship was moving at her speed. I would let her set the pace and be there when she was ready to dive head-long into us for life. Until then I will enjoy apartment hopping with my one and only Betty.
