I never knew death could be so... dull.

I've been drifting in this endless, pitch-black void for a while now, ever since I bit the dust, I guess. How long? Minutes? Hours? Days? Months? Hell, maybe even years?

During my time here, I've had plenty of moments to ponder what I could've done differently. That night is still etched vividly in my memory. It was dark in the heart of New York City, and I was strolling down a deserted alley, minding my own damn business. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a thug with a gun, threatening a woman. What did I do? Well, I'll tell ya...

I walked right on by.

I'm no hero, never was, never want to be. Heroes toss everything aside for the sake of "justice" and "fairness." They couldn't give a damn about the folks suffering under those so-called virtues as they cherry-pick who to save and who to let rot.

So, I kept on walking down that grimy alley, ignoring the woman's pleas as that scumbag tried to have his way with her.

Little did I know, that'd be my biggest blunder.

Seemed that thug finally noticed me.

"HEY, FUCKER!" he bellowed, gun aimed at my noggin.

"Whoa, easy there, big guy," I said, raising my hands. I could already feel a headache coming on.

"Don't you dare tell me to calm down! Where the hell do you think you're going!?" he snapped.

The dude had wild, bloodshot eyes, and he was shaking like a leaf. Clearly, this guy was on some heavy drugs. Not a good situation.

"Listen, I ain't looking for trouble. I didn't see a damn thing, promise I won't dial the cops," I pleaded, trying to reason with him. His tremors were getting worse.

"You think I'm an idiot? You'll rat me out the moment I let you go. Nah, it's better I put you six feet under," he declared.

Damn. This wasn't looking good. Was this how it'd all end for me?

No way.

If there's one thing about me, I'm one stubborn son of a bitch. So, as soon as he started squeezing that trigger, I lunged at him.

I felt the bullets piercing my flesh as I tackled him to the ground. We wrestled for that gun, but eventually, I got the upper hand.

Pointed it right at his head.

"Wait! Plea—" I pulled the trigger before he could finish.

I tumbled to the ground beside him afterward, scanning the area. No sign of the woman. She must've bolted when he was busy with me. I glanced at where I'd been shot, and it was right in the heart and kidney. I don't even know how I managed to take him down before succumbing to my wounds. Everything started to fade around me. Sounds grew quieter, vision blurrier, everything just seemed...dimmer. Then, darkness.

Not exactly the glorious ending I'd hoped for – shot and left for dead in some alley, maybe to become rat chow.

Suddenly, a piercing light shattered the darkness.

"What the hell is that?" I thought, squinting against the blinding, white radiance. It looked like a dying star in the dead of night.

As the light grew more intense, I began to feel like I was burning up.

"Too...much," I croaked in agony as the searing heat became unbearable. Eventually, I lost consciousness.

As the minutes ticked by, the labor room buzzed with tension and anticipation. Summer, drenched in sweat, gripped Tai's hand with a vice-like hold.

"TAI, I CAN'T DO THIS!" she shouted, her voice filled with a mix of pain and fear.

Tai tried to soothe her. "You're doing great, Summer. Just a little more, and we'll meet our baby."

The doctor, seasoned by countless deliveries, encouraged her, "Come on, Summer. One more push, you've got this."

With sheer determination, Summer gritted her teeth and pushed with all her might. The room filled with her cries of pain and effort.

"Hang in there, love," Tai whispered, his eyes locked onto his wife, sharing every ounce of her pain.

And then, a new voice joined the cacophony, the voice of their newborn son. The moment was overwhelming, tears streaming down both their faces.

The doctor smiled, "Congratulations, it's a boy!"

Tai's eyes glistened with pride as he watched the nurse carefully clean their baby. "You did it, Summer."

Exhausted and overwhelmed with emotion, Summer could only manage a weak smile.

"Sir, what are you going to name him?" the doctor asked, noticing Tai's thoughtful expression.

Tai looked down at his son, his heart full. "We'll call him Carmine."

2 hours old

What in the devil's scrawny backside was happening?

I couldn't open my eyes, but I could hear things. People were speaking, but the words weren't in English.

Where was I? Why couldn't I see? What the hell was going on?!

Panic coursed through me when suddenly, a wave of calm washed over my senses.

Alright, that was weird. But where did it come from?

*Tick*

What was that?

The sound was oddly familiar, like the ticking of a clock. Strangely, I could 'see' something, even though my eyes were closed.

Man, this was trippy.

I know what it feels like to get high; I've had my share of wild nights in college.

I could see a gray screen in front of me.

Tock

So, that's why my emotions feel dulled. Does this mean I can still experience emotions, just not as intensely?

But why did this screen pop up? It feels oddly familiar, like déjà vu.

I froze.

No way.

No bloody fucking way.

'Status' I thought out.
