Chapter 6: Part of Your World

Summary: Jake and Addison wake up to find the girls trying to make pancakes for breakfast before Jake suggests going out for the day with Angela while Michelle and Amelia stay home to get some work finished.

While the girls tried to make bunny pancakes as Olivia requested, Jake and Addison woke up from the sound of them chatting downstairs.

"Morning," Addison said when she saw Jake's eyes start to open, too.

"Good morning," Jake smiled and moved a strand of hair away from her face.

"How'd you sleep?" Addison asked.

"Like a rock. You?" Jake asked.

"I don't think I've slept that well in a long time," Addison admitted, slightly embarrassed.

Jake smiled and leaned in, Addison's eyes fluttering shut as he went in for a sweet kiss.

"I should probably get up and see what kind of trouble Olivia's gotten into," Addison joked, sitting up.

"Mind if I join you? Not to brag, but I make a mean cup of coffee," Jake asked.

"I'd love that," Addison agreed, giving him a peck on the lips before they both got out of bed and got dressed.

"What's going on?" Addison asks, seeing the three argue.

"Liv wants pancakes. Bunny pancakes. Except we can't draw," Michelle explained.

"Mommy, can you make me one?" Olivia pleaded.

"Oh, honey. I don't think mine will come out much better," Addison admitted. Olivia pouted.

"Why don't I give it a try?" Jake offered. Olivia's eyes widened.

"Do you…happen to have a squeeze bottle?" Jake asked.

"Um…yeah. I do actually," Addison said, grabbing an empty squeeze bottle from the cabinet.

"Thank you," Jake accepted the bottle graciously and opened the lid, only to start carefully ladling in some of the pancake batter.

"That's genius," Michelle commented.

"What are you doing?" Olivia asked, moving to get a closer look.

"Well, putting the batter in the bottle's gonna make it easier to draw," Jake explained.

"Oh…," Olivia said as she continued watching him, completely in awe.

Soon, Jake started drawing on the pan after lowering the heat to low. He drew a circle first and then began on the ears, making them narrower than the larger circle in the middle. Then, he grabbed the ladle and started filling in the head and ears. Everyone else watched as the pancake cooked.

"Now…for the moment of truth," Jake joked as he grabbed the spatula to flip.

Carefully, he peeled the pancake off the hot pan and gently flipped it, everyone watching as it landed perfectly. Olivia's face lit up when she saw the pancake hold its shape.

"You did it!" Olivia cheered.

"Suck up," Amelia joked. Jake laughed, flipping the spatula in his hand as just another way to show off.

"How'd you know to do that?" Addison asked, referring to the squeeze bottle.

"Angela used to really like teddy bear pancakes. And then after I figured that out, she wanted Mickey Mouse pancakes. We got these molds, but the ones we got weren't very good, so I looked up other ways to make different pancake shapes, and the rest is history," Jake explained.

"You can do Mickey pancakes, too?" Olivia asked.

"Yes, I can. Would you like a Mickey pancake?" Jake offered. Olivia nodded her head enthusiastically.

"Liv, what do we say?" Addison coaxed.

"Please?" Olivia asked.

"One Mickey pancake, coming right up," Jake chuckled.

After the bunny pancake finished cooking, Jake placed it on a plate and slid it over to Olivia, who moved to the dining table. She started adding the now-softened butter and maple syrup on top. Addison grabbed the bottle and stopped it before she poured too much on her pancake. As Olivia ate her pancake, Jake went to work on the Mickey pancake. By then, Olivia started chatting away with Michelle and Amelia.

"You really are a saint, you know," Addison whispered after she got back to Jake, standing behind him as he finished the final touches on the Mickey shape.

"It was my pleasure," Jake said, looking beside him to look into Addison's eyes before leaning in for another kiss.

"Get a room," Michelle called out jokingly.

"You do remember I own this place, right? So, technically, this is my room," Addison joked.

"I did not need that visual," Amelia commented jokingly. Addison played along, rolling her eyes playfully.

Seeing the kiss reminded Olivia all about last night.

"Mommy?" Olivia asked in a highly scandalized voice.

"Yes?" Addison laughed softly, breaking the kiss and staring at her boyfriend.

"Dr. Jake slept in your bed last night. Naked! Did you see his boy parts?!" Olivia asked, livid.

"Olivia!" Addison yelped out scandalized, while Jake turned a shade of red that he wasn't even sure could exist. The younger women burst out laughing, forgetting about their earlier conversation.

"Olivia," Jake started, trying to gather himself, figuring he needed to explain this.

"I did sleep in your mom's bed last night, but I assure you I was not naked. I didn't have a shirt on, but I promise I had pajama pants on," Jake insisted. Olivia stared at him, not quite believing him.

"Sometimes, I find Meredeth naked. She forgets she can't sleep naked when I'm there," Olivia giggled, knowing she probably shouldn't be telling them.

"Cristina and Alex laugh at her when she does. Alex doesn't sleep with a shirt on. He says boys don't do that. He cooks for me a lot because Daddy's at work and Meredeth can't cook. She's worse than Mommy and Lia," Olivia said, giggling.

Addison closed her eyes and counted to ten before looking at her daughter.

"What on earth goes on in Seattle when I'm not there?" Addison asked.

"Umm, lots! I get to talk to the nurses and hang out with Uncle Richard. He lets me draw on the whiteboard, and he said only special doctors get to do that! He said he used to let Meredeth do it when she was little, but she doesn't remember," Olivia informed her.

"That's pretty cool," Jake commented, chuckling.

"Yeah! Uncle Richard lets me draw flowers in the corners!" Olivia informed him.

"I think the flowers make everyone happy. And I sign it, too! So everyone knows it's me," Olivia beamed, swinging her little legs.

"They definitely make people smile. That I can confirm," Amelia added with a little laugh.

"Sometimes, Lia does Daddy's job so he can stay home with me," Olivia informed them.

"But sometimes there's a super big emergency, so everyone has to go to work. And sometimes, when the daycare isn't open, I get to sit with the nurses. And they talk a lot," Olivia added.

"Okay, I think that's enough stories for this morning, Liv. If you're done with breakfast, why don't you go get ready for the day? And don't forget to make your bed," Addison said.

"Daddy doesn't make me make my bed," Olivia pouted.

"Well, I'm not Daddy. We like to keep things nice and tidy for Lydia, so the house isn't super dirty," Addison said.

"But Daddy says it's her job to clean up for us," Olivia pointed out.

"Well, it is. But you still need to learn to clean up after yourself," Addison said, motioning for her to go back upstairs to get ready with the expectation that she'd follow behind her.

"Fine," Olivia gave in as she crossed her arms and stomped lightly up the stairs. Addison chuckled as she followed behind her to help her get ready.

"Welcome to mornings at Casa de Montgomery Shepherd," Michelle chuckled, winking at him. She was still going to shoot her shot.

"So, is this a normal morning here?" Jake asked, smiling. He loved watching Addison parent her daughter.

"Pretty much. She's good at listening, but she's got a 'tude on her," Michelle shrugged with a smile.

Amelia sat watching the two. She was tempted to tell Michelle off for flirting with Jake, but she knew her friend was harmless.

"Well, is anyone busy today?" Jake asked after a comfortable silence fell over them.

"I don't think so. Why?" Amelia asked.

"How would you guys like to spend the day with me and maybe Angela?" Jake asked, hoping he didn't sound desperate.

"Liv would love that," Amelia commented.

"What about you two? Are you in?" Jake asked. He didn't mind having a big family day.

"Nah. You guys go. We'll hold down the fort," Amelia waved him off with a smile.

"I have paperwork in my bag I should do and I'm sure Michelle can find something to occupy herself for a bit." Amelia shrugs. She figured she should attempt to get something done after missing a few days of work, plus she needed alone time to figure things out.

Addison, who had returned, overheard the last bit of the conversation and got curious, hearing Amelia mention work.

"Do you even work?" Addison asked the other woman curiously. She'd never heard anything to indicate she did but assumed she did.

"Eh. I used to. On and off. I made money as a kid. Now, I take gigs here and there. You know, to keep up the lifestyle. Or, well, I used to," Michelle shrugged, unashamed.

"What do you do?" Jake asked curiously.

"I'm a model. I did catalogs growing up. I wasn't like all the pretty white girls, so I was a little higher in demand," Michelle shrugged.

"Now I just do gigs every once in a while, which gives me plenty of time to have fun," Michelle wiggled her eyebrows suggestively.

"How'd you two meet?" Jake asked, nodding his head toward Amelia.

"Roommates. Freshman year. I wanted to be a normal kid, so I took a shot and got in. I was going to major in fashion design, but I dropped out one semester short of my degree," Michelle said, making Amelia chuckle.

"Then she left me all alone in Boston while she took off to France to do some gig there. She left me with terrible roommates, too," Amelia added.

"It was too good of an offer. I missed you, but I don't regret it. I brought you back a keychain!" Michelle said.

"You might as well have gotten me a shirt that said my friend went to Paris and all she got me was this crappy shirt," Amelia said.

"Hey! It was from the official gift shop at the Eiffel Tower," Michelle pointed out.

"Yeah, well, I probably could've found the same thing at one of those street shops on the pier," Amelia said.

"Yeah, well, you can find other things there, too," Michelle teased, countering her point.

"I haven't…done any of that since I was 17, so…," Amelia said, catching herself from saying something crass before throwing an orange at her friend's head. The women at the office, mostly Violet, sans Addison, kept reminding her to filter. And she was trying her best to.

"Hey!" Michelle ducked as Amelia threw a pillow towards her.

"What was that for?" Michelle asked. Amelia shrugged.

"Cause I felt like it," Amelia said.

Addison rolled her eyes, picking up the orange and putting it back.

"I swear you two behave like toddlers. Olivia acts more mature than you both. Can I trust you home alone, or do you need supervision?" Addison asked, narrowing her eyes at the two younger adults.

"One, that's rude," Amelia started.

"Two, yes you can. We managed for years in a dorm room and a cramped apartment. Surely, we can do it again," Amelia insisted.

Addison sighed, staring at them for a little longer. She loved and trusted them, but sometimes she just wasn't sure.

"Let's get going, Addison," Jake suggested after looking at the time. It was clear Amelia and Michelle had no intention of joining them, so there was no reason to stick around. Plus, he knew Addison would likely give them a set of rules to follow because, in her eyes, they were her children.

"What's Liv doing, anyway?" Jake asked. She'd been upstairs for a while now.

"Knowing her, she's constructed some weird fort with all her bedding and stuffed animals. She has an active imagination. You can thank Amelia for that," Addison replied, shooting her sister a knowing look.

"You're welcome for that," Amelia joked. Addison and Jake chuckled.

"I like that about her," Jake commented, making Addison straighten up and smile back at him.

"Me, too," Addison said.

"I too like that about her," Amelia commented.

"Now, get out of here. You two are gross," Amelia added playfully.

"Go enjoy your day," Amelia said. She would push them toward the door if they didn't have to get Olivia. Still, she thought.

Addison caved and went to get Olivia, who, like Addison thought, had constructed something in her room. It took all of Addison's willpower to not make her clean up before they left, but she knew if she did, it'd take another half hour, and she knew her boyfriend really wanted to go so she let Olivia leave it there.

Olivia had no clue what they were doing, but she figured Dr. Jake taking them out was a good thing. She knew Mommy must have approved because Mommy had to approve of everything.

"Where are we?" Olivia asked as they pulled up to a house. This wasn't what she was expecting. She was expecting an adventure!

"We're at my house, Liv. Angela's home, so I wanted to see if she'd come with us. You remember her, right?" Jake asked smoothly, looking at the girl.

Olivia's eyes lit up after a moment of thinking.

"Yeah! Is she gonna come too? That would be really fun!" Olivia asked excitedly.

The adults chuckled.

"Well, I'm going to ask her. Do you want to ask instead?" Jake offered, knowing the answer was likely yes.

"Yeah! I wanna ask! Mommy, can I go ask?" Olivia asked, already fiddling with the straps of her booster seat.

"Okay, okay. Hold still. Let Jake get you out of your trap," Addison said, rolling her eyes playfully. Amelia and Olivia both referred to her booster seat as a trap.

Olivia sat up straight, dropping her hands and giving Jake the best puppy-dog-eyed look she could give.

Jake chuckled, unstrapping and helping her out. He couldn't say no to her and winked at Addison while carrying Olivia into the house.

"Ange?" Jake called, looking around the house for his daughter.

"Yeah, Dad?" Angela asked, wandering down the stairs.

"We were going to invite you out with us this afternoon. Addison, Olivia, and I are all here. But I guess you have plans," Jake said, noting her wet hair.

"No, I just took a shower. I went swimming at the beach this morning," Angela informed him.

"Let me dry my hair and we can go. What are we doing?" Angela asked before leaving, wanting to figure out what outfit would match their activity before going back upstairs to get dressed.

"I was thinking of trying that new paint-on-a-plate place. It looks like fun. And I thought Liv would like it," Jake gestured to the girl in his arms.

She smiled, looking at the little girl in her father's arms. She did seem to fit quite nicely into their lives.

"Hey Liv, do you want me to do your hair? Maybe we can have matching hair," Angela offered.

"Yeah!" Olivia cheered, wiggling out of Dr. Jake's arms so she could go with her. Angela took her hand.

"I got her, Dad. You just sit tight. Where's Addison?" Angela asked.

"She's waiting in the car, but I guess I'll get her since I'm guessing you're gonna be a while," Jake teased, knowing she usually took a while to do her hair and makeup.

Angela waved him off, heading upstairs with the younger girl.

After an hour, they finally got out of the house. Jake set up the GPS and drove to the paint-a-plate store, hoping it'd be a fun experience for everyone.

It thrilled Olivia to monopolize Angela's sole attention, pleased with her new hairdo courtesy of her new friend. The adults just listened to them talk, glad Angela could humor the young girl.

After about 20 minutes of driving, Jake pulled into the parking lot. They headed in as a group and Jake paid for everyone as Addison pulled out her own wallet.

"It's my treat," Jake said, pushing her outstretched hand away.

"I can pay; you shouldn't have to," Addison insisted. She didn't need Jake to pay for anything.

"I know you can pay, but this is my treat," Jake insisted.

Angela rolled her eyes playfully. Her dad was disgusting, flirting with Addison.

"They're gross," Angela whispered to the little girl at her side.

"Yeah, gross," Olivia repeated, unaware of what her friend meant.

"Alright, let's go!" Jake declared once they settled everything, herding the group into the studios to paint.

"Dr. Jake, can you help me?" Olivia asked, blinking her blue eyes sweetly at her mom's boyfriend.

"Sure can. Come on around here," Jake offered to scoot back to allow Olivia to get in between him and the table.

The two worked as a pair happily. Addison couldn't help but feel a little jealous that Jake had all of Olivia's attention. Pete and any other guy she dated never held Olivia's attention quite the same. But then again, other than Pete, none of her other boyfriends had even met Olivia. But, at the time, she was much younger. And Pete was clear he wasn't looking to be Olivia's stepdad, even though he got along great with her. In the end, he went back to Violet, and they seemed to be happy now.

"Are you okay?" Addison asked Angela softly, noticing she, too, was staring.

"Yeah. He deserves to be happy. He hasn't dated much since my mom died. You're the longest girlfriend he's ever had, other than Mom. He really likes you, Addison. And I hope you like him like that too," Angela shrugged.

The truth was, she was a little jealous because she hadn't been this close to her dad in years, but Olivia was cute and her dad was so happy she couldn't be mad about it.

"You know, Olivia likes you," Addison started gently.

"I appreciate you being so nice to her. She spends so much time around adults; it's nice seeing her so excited over another kid. Even if you are older than her. But I don't expect you to always entertain her; you can say no. I promise she's not your responsibility. I intend on staying around, Angela. I want it to work with your dad, but you girls get a say. You're more important than mine or your dad's feelings," Addison said firmly, wanting her to know she was important, and that she'd be heard.

Angela smiled understandingly, going back to focusing on her own plate. She understood Addison and hoped what she meant was true, even though there'd never been an issue between them. And she hoped it'd stay that way.

Once their time was up, the four walked across the street with their new plates in hand to this little cafe that had a great play area for Olivia. Addison was thrilled that Jake thought of her daughter by picking somewhere child-friendly.

She was falling more and more in love with this man and she couldn't be happier.

After lunch, Addison called Michelle, asking if she could bring anything back for them.

"Well," Michelle started.

"Amelia's feeling pretty bad. What can you get her?" Michelle asked.

"Anything," Addison replied.

"Like…a prescription?" Michelle asked carefully.

"Anything but that; that I can't do," Addison chuckled.

"I'm not her doctor. Plus, it's illegal," Addison added.

"Don't doctors prescribe stuff for each other all the time?" Michelle asked.

"They do. Or..well, some do. That's more of a professional courtesy," Addison started.

"So, can't you do that for Amelia?" Michelle asked, confused.

"I…could, technically. But Amelia doesn't need anything stronger than what you can find over the counter. She won't take anything very strong with her history. Plus, I don't want to give her anything that could hurt the baby," Addison explained.

"I'll stop at the pharmacy to grab some things. Just make sure she stays hydrated in the meantime. And if she's still feeling nauseous, there should be some Dramamine left in the cabinet," Addison said.

"Drummer what?" Michelle asked.

"Dramamine. It helps with nausea. It should be in a small yellow box," Addison explained, chuckling. She could hear Michelle shuffling around on the other end.

"Found it," Michelle said, feeling accomplished.

"I shouldn't be too long. Tell Amelia I should be home soon," Addison said before hanging up.

She looked over at Jake, who looked amused.

"She doesn't know how any of that works, does she?" Jake asked. Addison shook her head with a smile.

"Not at all," Addison laughed.

"Mind watching Liv while I run into the pharmacy?" Addison asked.

"Of course not. Go ahead," Jake agreed easily.

A/N: Chapter titled inspired by the song, Part of Your World, from Olivia's favorite movie, The Little Mermaid. This chapter was really more of a fluff chapter of Jake and Addison's kids spending more time together and bonding while Amelia's not feeling well with morning sickness at home. We'll go more into her pregnancy as well as Michelle's sickness in future chapters, so look out for that. Comments and reviews are encouraged. Thanks for reading!
