Shards of Power
Chapter 5
-Aizawa-
Draining a juice pouch, Shota pushed open the door to Nezu's office, grimacing when he saw that the rat had the foresight to invite All Might to this little meeting. In point of fact, the majority of the other teachers were there, the only one not present being Kan who would be preparing to do his own Assessment test now that orientation was over.
"Ah, Shota!" Nezu waved cheerfully, "I had a feeling this meeting would be coming, and your colleagues were all very eager to take part in it as well."
"I want to know what the hell you put into my class Nezu." Shota sighed, ignoring the smug smirk on his boss' face. If he ignored it, then he wouldn't be tempted to smack it off.
"Ah, you mean Young Midoriya." All Might laughed, "He's truly a shining example of this newest generation is he not?"
"His quirk makes no damn sense." Shota scowled; he had a method to how he worked of not studying quirk files before he gave an assessment test. He liked to make his own observations and not risk being skewed by prior data that might be biased. Given today, that system might require altering going forward.
When Midoriya had stepped up for the ball throw, Shota had seen his hands and forearms darken and the flash of flames from the kid's palms. Sure, the 'Earth breathing' thing made no sense given fire but maybe the kid was just dramatic. But then they'd gotten to the fifty-meter dash and Midoriya had pulled out what he'd called 'Thunder Breathing, first form, Thunderclap and Flash' and shot forward with incredible speed. During the standing long jump, the kid had started flying, and during repeated 'side steps' the kid had begun floating before using alternating gouts of flame from his hands to move himself from side to side.
"Which one?" Nezu smirked as Shota felt a weight hit his stomach, the simple yet impossible concept that implied the coming of the ultimate 'Problem Child'.
"Which…one?" Shota repeated with dread of the impending headaches this student could cause. That dread became an icy grip on his spine when he saw Nemuri and Hizashi's expressions.
"Young Midoriya has eight quirks, although it was originally one." All Might's voice wasn't booming or bombastic for one but somber, "When he was a child, he was caught in a villain attack that required him to get his heart, pancreas, liver, intestines, a kidney, a lung, and his corneas replaced through transplants." Shota wanted to vomit at the thought of a child having to go through that, "In doing so, it woke up an unknown single use quirk and grafted the quirks of those organs original users to him in varying degrees." Shota's eyes widened at that statement, that this was more than just 'a quirk with several applications or facets that people think is multiple quirks' but a genuine arsenal.
"And so, you're trying to train him up to replace you." Shota's eyes narrowed at the giant blustering oaf who treated heroics as a game, a game that would likely kill his students if they played. He may not be the 'nicest' teacher in the world, but he swore when he lost Oboro that he wouldn't let another 'Hero' die so young, not if he could do something to stop it.
"Nope." All Might smirked seemingly enjoying Shota's sudden confusion, "Now don't get me wrong, I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if Young Midoriya did become the Number One hero at some point. But, I started training him as one of the quirks he has, the one from his heart, was that of my Mentor. The heart of the woman who was like a mother to me now beats in Midoriya's chest." That…that actually explained a lot and was a far more reasonable explanation than he'd expected. Part of him started to feel bad for avoiding the kid all these years.
"No, he's being trained to become my successor!" Nezu beamed as all of Shota's wariness slammed back into place, "His analytical skills are exemplary!"
Oh, oh no, this is what genuine terror feels like. It's been some time since he felt that.
"So, yeah, little listener is probably going to be our boss one day. Have fun Shota!" Hizashi grinned. Hearing a beep from Nezu's computer, Shota turned, hoping for a miracle of some kind to save him.
"Oh? Now that's interesting timing." Nezu blinked as he opened the notification that had popped up "It would seem one of our upper years has put in a request to be a Mentor to Young Midoriya."
"A mentorship?" Shota blinked in surprise. While those were nowhere near as rare as a three-star student they still weren't common. In their final year, third years were given the option of mentoring a first-year student. To help their development from quirk use and heroics in general to even something as simple as grades or settling into UA. Most third years were more focused on their upcoming debuts in the field, on ironing out the last few things that needed work before they became pros. He usually saw one or two every few years at most. He'd never heard of a day one mentorship request though.
"Yes indeed." Nezu pulled up the full application as each 'Mentor' would have to put why they wanted to take a particular student under their wing and what they had to offer the student. Didn't want a third year who was 'average at best' to spot a prodigal first year and hope to mooch off their future success.
"Nejire-Chan!" Midnight beamed when she peaked over and saw who had put in the request, Shota's dread coming back with a vengeance, "Says she saw his quirk assessment test from her classroom and witnessed him flying. She thinks she can help him learn how to fly better and how to fight in the air." If he wasn't so terrified of Nejire Hado making a potential problem children even more of a headache, Shota would be extremely proud of her logical reasoning. That said, it took everything within him to suppress a whimper at the future headaches and paperwork when Nezu happily clicked 'Approved'.
"There, now they just have to meet and decide if they wish to do the Mentorship or not." Nezu nodded with satisfaction.
Before Shota could slip away, All Might put a hand on his shoulder, "By the way, I felt I should offer you some warning." The man grimaced, "Nezu told me about the 'rivalry' Kan is determined to have with you?" when Shota gave a frustrated nod All Might continued "Well he pushed to get one of Midoriya's two closest friends in his class so he might bring that up or cause other drama later. Just thought you deserved to know."
So many headaches, so many problems, damn you Nezu.
-Izuku-
Stepping out of the changing room, Izuku sighed, running a hand back through his hair. He'd decided to wait until the others were changed and gone to avoid any more stares at his scars, at least for now. Mezo had understood, thankfully, and had 'volunteered to go ahead'. Izuku was pretty sure that was code for 'give the rest of the guys a talk about what not to ask' but he decided to let it go.
Hearing his phone go off, he pulled it out to see a notification from the school saying he'd been requested as a mentee for the mentorship program. The request also included a classroom where he could meet said potential Mentor and see if he wanted to go through with it.
Tossing his bag into 'inventory', he opened the group chat he had with Mezo and Neito.
Frankenstein: Sup losers, might be a bit late to lunch.
Mimic: Did something happen? Do we need to hide a body? Oh lord, we need to hide a body. Mezo! Get the shovels!
Kraken: Did that 'Bakugo' double back to try and corner you?! Do you need me to come back?!
Mimic: Wait, that bastich Bakugo is here?! I was joking before but not anymore! Mezo, you get the shovels, I'll find where to bury the body.
Frankenstein: No shovels!
Frankenstein: I'm find, nobody doubled back, I'm not in trouble or anything. A third year apparently put in a request for me in the Mentorship program and I was going to meet them for a bit. If they're not a prick I might bring them to the cafeteria so they could 'get the approval of the council'
Mimic: Vlad-Sensei is going to be livid that you got a Mentorship offer day one and nobody in his class did. Good lord this 'rivalry' is going to be exhausting.
Kraken: You are only saying this because we are in said 'Rival class' Neito. If it wasn't for that you would be fully invested in a rivalry even if just for the drama it would cause.
Mimic:…
Mimic: You're not wrong but you don't have to say it
Frankenstein: Yes we do.
Kraken: Yes we do.
Tucking away his phone, Izuku made his way to the classroom we'd been told to meet his potential Mentor. Reaching the door, he'd barely gotten it open before a shock of blue filled his vision. Staggering back, he saw a bubbly third year quite literally floating in front of him, small rings of yellow energy spiraling out from underneath her to keep her in the air.
"Hey, hey! You're Midoriya, right?" the bubbly bluenette was smiling as she floated around him, "Oooooh, this is so exciting, I've never been a mentor before! Have you been a mentor? I saw you flying, but what else can your quirk do? Wow, you're really muscelly, do you work out? Wooooow, you have three stars? Who recommended you? Who's your homeroom teacher?"
Blinking at the onslaught of questions, Izuku started responding out of reflex, able to keep up with the rapid-fire barrage easily thanks to his own "Yes, I'm Midoriya. No, I've never been a mentor before. I technically have eight quirks, so a lot. Yes, I work out. Yes, I have three stars. Principal Nezu was the one who recommended me, and my homeroom teacher is Aizawa."
Nejire was silent for all of three seconds before she let out an excited squeal and hugged him tight, his face turning crimson, "Nobody's ever kept up with my questions like that before! Ooooooh, we're going to be great friends I just know it!"
"Y-yeah." Izuku stammered, unable to refuse the offer with how flustered he was, and admittedly liking the idea of more friends, "My other friends are having lunch in the cafeteria if you'd like to go talk there?"
"More friends?!" Nejire beamed before grabbing his hand and pulling him along so fast he'd have become a windsock if Float had been active, "Let's go!"
"I can waaaaalk!" he tried to find his footing before giving up and letting her pull him along. And why did he feel like his quirk was laughing at him right now?!
AN: Well Izuku, you're now trapped in the storm that is Hurricane Hado. Next chapter will be focused on Izuku and the gang interacting with his class and others in the cafeteria. So, everyone gets to experience Hurricane Hado and learn more about Izuku's multitude of quirks.
