Ringing in the New Year
Part 2: Always Expect the Unexpected

Molly's Bar, Chicago – They were all still laughing as they made their way down the sidewalk towards the bar together, the two couples both laughing about how it just took them getting ready to leave Chicago for them to be pregnant. And in their case, it seemed to be true; especially since Matt planning to leave Chicago with the woman of his dreams truly has brought him nothing but happiness, and this is just one of the things that really makes him happy. The fact that they're having a baby, that he's going to be a father. And even better, his wife is going to be there with him every step of the way as she's going to be safe after she gives birth. That's already guaranteed due to the fact that she doesn't have an aneurysm. And while Matt still isn't thrilled with the fact that they had to suffer the way they did over the past year (especially when it comes to being away from Gabby for no reason), he's just happy that they're back together (permanently) and expecting their first child together. Something which they most certainly are telling people tonight.

Regardless of how far along they are in the pregnancy, they're both ready to do that simply due to the fact that they want to do it in person, which is the entire reason why Matt's okay with Gabby being here. Honestly, he'd rather have her stay home due to the fact that she needs to rest for the sake of their baby. And sure, he's probably just being overprotective over the woman he loves (he is); but that's simply due to the fact that he loves Gabby more than anything. She's truly the love of his life, the woman of his dreams, and the (future) mother of his children. His biological children, as they are never going to need to look at adopting again now that they can have children of their own; children which they can raise in Puerto Rico with each other, which is why he's currently speaking in Spanish. "Ola. Donde está el baño." Gabby smiled as she heard Matt say that, as that most certainly is the right way to say the phrase she was training him to say. And just what might that phrase be? Well, it's a phrase that may come in handy during her pregnancy.

Because the phrase he just said is: 'Hi, where's the bathroom?' Yes, Gabby is teaching her husband to say that; I mean, she is pregnant, and it may come in handy when they're in Puerto Rico. You never know and need to be prepared, which is precisely what Matt wants to be. In fact, he was the one that requested Gabby teaches him these phrases for when they're in Puerto Rico; Severide just wishes that he knew what they were, as it seems that they do not want him and Stella to learn. I mean, they're going to need to learn the language too for when they come and visit. "Ok. Can someone please speak English? I have no idea what you said, and I might as well learn some Spanish for when we visit." Stella agreed with Severide, as that most certainly is going to happen; they're going to visit them at some point. "Oh yeah girl, I'm going to visit at some point." Gabby agreed with Stella as she said that, well aware that was the case. "Are you sure that you want to know?" Stella and Severide both stopped in their tracks, turning to look at Matt and Gabby.

The reason? They were very interested in knowing what Matt was learning in Spanish now, based on the way Gabby was teasing them; like she knew something that they didn't. Then again, she did; all due to the fact that she speaks Spanish, while they don't. "Yes, we do want to know considering Matt has been trying to perfect the saying for a while now." Matt agreed with Kelly and Stella both smiling as they looked at each other. "Well, you asked. So, we might as well let you know that I was practicing saying 'where's the bathroom' in Spanish." Stella just looked at Gabby as Matt told them that, especially since she was snickering and really laughing right now. "Gabby!" Gabby just put her hands up, as they were the ones that wanted to know. "Last time I checked, you were the ones that asked what phrase we were practicing!" Kelly agreed with Gabby, before turning his head to look at his best friend. "And you couldn't tell me that I didn't want to know?" Matt just looked at his best friend, before turning his head to look at Gabby. He then smirked at her.

After all, he knew that he needed to stay on her good side in case he wants something tonight. "I mean, do I really have a choice? She's pregnant with my kid." Gabby then slapped her husband's chest, as that wasn't the only reason why he was doing it. "Excuse me, but that's not the only reason you're doing it." Matt smirked as he wrapped his arm around Gabby, before kissing the side of her head; after all, there was a very sexy reason why he played with his best friend like that. "I don't think we need to go into details about what we want to do tonight. Speaking of which, you guys are on your own if we decide to leave early." Kelly stared at Matt as he said that. "Excuse me?" Matt nodded as he placed his hand on Gabby's back, before stroking it with his thumb. "If Gabby needs to leave for rest or stress, then you guys need to find another ride. It's why we took our car." Kelly agreed with Matt, before turning to look at Stella. "I knew that we should've taken our car." Stella just looked at him. "And leave it stranded here to get tickets, which I had to pay!"

Matt just looked at Kelly as he said that, shocked. "Seriously? You made her pay!" Kelly then put his hands up. "She was the one that parked there!" Matt just glared at him. "And she's your girlfriend, who makes less money than you do Lieutenant!" Snapping his fingers, Kelly remembered something. "That reminds me, can you write me a letter of recommendation for me to be the new captain?" Matt was surprised that he asked him that question, when he already has connections. "Seriously? You want ME to do that, and you think it'll make a difference?" Severide was confused as he heard Matt say that, as he didn't understand; that was, until Matt pointed it out. "Kelly, your dad is Benny Severide, and your close family friend is Commissioner Grissom. If they wanted you to be a captain, then you would've been made a captain by now without any merit!" Kelly thought about it and agreed with Matt, as that was the truth. After all, they have a lot of sway in the CFD. "Yeah, that makes sense. Just know that it may help." Matt shook his head.

Especially when he saw Sylvie walking into the bar with Antonio, laughing and being all happy with each other, which was the last thing that he wants to see. So much so, that he just walked away to go stop his brother-in-law, which confused Gabby. "Hey, where you going baby?" However, Matt just ignored Gabby as he made his way over to the door. "Excuse me, but what's going on here?" Turning their heads, Antonio, and Brett both looked at Matt; with Antonio speaking to his brother-in-law. "Hey Matt, how are you? Glad you and Gabby could come out." Matt agreed with Antonio, before going to hug him. "Yeah, same here." Antonio smiled. ."Where is she? You guys should sit with me and Brett." Matt was shocked as he heard him say that. "Oh no, Brett isn't staying." And that was when Gabby realized what was happening, Matt left so that he could talk with Brett and her brother. Something that really made her sad. "Kelly, Stella. Can you guys to into the bar? We'll meet you in there. You say nothing." Kelly and Stella both agreed as they left.

Meanwhile, Gabby walked over to her husband so that she could talk to her brother and Sylvie; two things that she didn't want to see: (1) Brett, in general; and (2) Brett and her brother together. That is just not okay with her, especially not after what Sylvie's done to her. She's the last person that she wants her brother to be with, which is precisely why she just made her way over to Matt; that way, they could talk to the both of them together. "Hey sis. Happy New Year." Walking up to Gabby, Antonio smiled as he hugged her. "How are you feeling? I swear, I am so happy about the news. You guys are going to make great parents." Sylvie agreed with Antonio as he said that, smiling as she looked at Matt and Gabby. "I couldn't have said it better myself. You guys…" Gabby just looked at Sylvie as she said that. "Save it two faces!" Sylvie just looked at Gabby as she said that, shocked. "Gabby!" Gabby just glared at Sylvie as she said that. "Don't you dare GABBY me. Not when we both know that you are not to be anywhere near this place, as you were warned."

Sylvie laughed as she heard Gabby say that. "Yeah, Herrmann didn't mean that. He was just following orders from Matt, who doesn't even own the bar." Sylvie then went to go get in the bar with Antonio, while Gabby walked up to the door and pushed the door closed so that she could stop her, which also made Matt worry due to the fact that she's pregnant and needs to take it easy. "Yeah, don't even think about it." Antonio just looked at his sister. "Gabby…" Walking up to Antonio, Matt started to get suspicious based on the way he was acting right now; so, he looked into his pupils. "Fuck. Now this makes sense." Turning her head, Gabby looked at her husband. "What are you talking about?" Going to point to her brother's eyes, Matt just saw that they were dilated; something which Gabby noticed and was furious about. "You bitch! You broke his sobriety!" Sylvie laughed. "Yeah, nothing like him ruminating over how his sister can die that makes a man want to drink." Gabby was stunned when she heard Sylvie say that. "I don't have one."

Sylvie was surprised. "Wait, you mean…" Matt nodded. "Yeah, it was misdiagnosis." Sylvie just got nervous, as that meant that. "Oh yeah, I'm here with Matt and our child forever. Now, I'm going to take my brother inside and get him sober." Walking up to her brother, Gabby smiled at Antonio. "Hey, Antonio. It's me, Gabby." Antonio smiled at his sister. "Hey Gabby." Gabby smiled as she hugged her brother. "Listen, how about you come with me? We can sit down, get you some water, get some food in you and just have fun?" Antonio agreed with Gabby. "But you need to let go of Sylvie's hand. Antonio, you remember what she did to me? Remember Antonio, the ambo bag. Abusing me?" Matt then started to remember that, while also turning to look at Sylvie. "You bitch! Was that report fake?" Matt and Gabby were both confused. "What report?" Antonio sighed. "She showed me a fake report which switched the entire story around, she looked like the victim." Gabby just glared at her brother. "And you believed her." Antonio sighed. "Forged signature."

Matt just looked at Antonio when he said that. "Who's!" Antonio sighed as he looked at his brother-in-law. "Yours, that's why I wasn't mad that you let Gabby go recently." Matt just glared at both him and Sylvie. "Gabby, take your brother inside. Me and Sylvie need to have a word." Gabby agreed with Matt as he said that, well aware that was the case. "Don't say anything to anybody until I'm in there. I need to shield you from Herrmann! This isn't the firehouse which means you can get hurt." Gabby agreed with her husband as he said that. "Understood." Gabby then walked away to lead her brother into the bar, while Matt pointed to the wall. "The wall, now!" Sylvie laughed. "Oh, do you want to kiss me finally?" Matt just glared at Sylvie, as he wasn't impressed. "You think this is funny?" Sylvie smirked. "Oh, c'mon Matt; we both know the real reason you sent Gabby inside, because then you can do what you really want to do." Getting close to Matt, Sylvie went to kiss him; that was, until he pushed her onto the ground and was shocked. "You bitch!"

He was absolutely shocked over what Sylvie just did, trying to kiss him. Who did she think she is to try and kiss her? Especially when he's married to Gabby! When he's committed to his wife! When he made it pretty clear to her that he doesn't want her near his family, so why would he want her! That's just ridiculous. "What the hell Brett!" That's when Matt heard someone come outside, only to see that it was Kelly. "Hey, Gabby said that you might need help out here." Turning his head, Matt agreed with Kelly; before also seeing Gabby. "Yeah, I do. Especially since Sylvie almost kissed me!" Gabby was surprised when she heard Matt say that, while also noticing that Sylvie was getting up off the ground; her clearly having been pushed away from her husband. The man she needs to make sure is okay. "Hey, you okay?" Sylvie then went to answer her question. "Yeah, I'm g…" Turning her head, Gabby snapped back. "I wasn't talking to you. I was talking to my husband, who you seem to forget is married and doesn't want to kiss you!" Sylvie looked at Gabby.

After all, they both knew that wasn't true. "Oh, he was tempted while…" Matt just glared at Sylvie. "Are you kidding me? I was not. I was mourning for my marriage, for the life I always wanted with my wife. The woman I love. I wasn't looking at another woman, especially not her paramedic partner! Oh, and you're dreaming if you ever think I'd want you after what you did to my wife!" Sylvie laughed as she heard Matt say that. "You mean, take her job and do it better than her? I mean, it's just a matter of time before I get you too." Matt was shocked. "I'm married and having a baby with my wife!" Sylvie was surprised when she heard Matt say that, as was the rest of the firehouse when they all came out and heard that. "Gabby, are you pregnant!" Turning to look at the rest of the house, Gabby blushed; especially as she looked at Chief Boden. "Yeah, I am." Boden just smiled as he made his way over to Gabby, before hugging her. "Congratulations. This is great news." Matt agreed with Boden, smiling at his beautiful wife.

Meanwhile, Herrmann made his way over to Gabby. "Now it makes so much sense, why you couldn't work tonight." Gabby agreed with Herrmann, before hugging him and smiling. "Yeah, and why my husband here is going to be sober. By the way Boden, did you get that report finally?" Boden sighed. "Yeah, I was going to talk to you about that." Boden then turned his head and looked at Sylvie. "And I was going to talk to you about Wednesday. Hell, I was going to talk to the both of you about Wednesday." Gabby was confused as she heard Boden say that, until she realized why. "Oh!" Boden nodded as Gabby said that. "Yeah, I was going to ask if you can cover her shift, because we're short a PIC. But, it looks like the answer is no." Sylvie just looked at Boden as he said that. "Wait a second, back up here. I'm fired? What the hell chief! I did a way better job than Gabby. I'm better than her in every…" Turning to look at Sylvie, Gabby glared at her. "Careful. I let you keep your job for an extra seven months! I could've filed the papers in May." Matt agreed with Gabby.

After which, he wrapped his arm around her and just got close to her, while also pressing his lips to her forehead as they both held each other close. After which, he turned his head and looked down at the woman he loves more than anything in the entire world. Bending down, Matt smirked as he kissed the woman he loves; while also placing his hand on her neck, as a way to ensure that they both took things nice and slow with each other for a moment. "I love you." Everybody cheered when they saw Gabby kissed, clearly happy for the both of them. "I love you too." Meanwhile, Matt looked at everybody. "Ok, back inside everybody. Antonio, do me a favor and call Jay Halstead? Have him meet me here? I need to report Sylvie. It's time she get punished for what she did both by the CFD and criminally." Sylvie then got nervous. "Matt, please. I'll resign and we can let this go." Matt just looked at Sylvie. "Based on the knowledge which we had at the time, your assault could've killed my wife." Gabby gulped and agreed with Matt, as that was true.

But now, that can't happen. "Also…" Seeing that Boden was still here, Matt realized something. "Hey, Boden." Boden then turned around and looked at Matt. "Yeah Matt?" Matt smirked. "Come here for a second." Boden nodded as he made his way over to him so that they can talk. "Are CFD by-laws 826.1A, and 826.1B still on the books right now?" Boden thought about it and agreed with Matt. The reason, they are very commonly used. The reason? They are as follows:

By-Law 826.1: Anybody who assaults an officer, or their immediate family is subject to immediate dismissal from the CFD.
By-Law 826.1A: An officer is defined as a Paramedic-in-Charge, Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, or District Chief (incl. Deputy).
By-Law 826.1B: Immediate family is defined as the officer's spouse, partner, and their children (including stepchildren).

And that's precisely what Sylvie just did. She assaulted an officer (twice), and the spouse of an officer (once). "In fact, I can fire her under three counts of that By-Law based on the reports that I have." Sylvie laughed. "Yeah, three reports. I only tried to kiss Matt once." Matt then looked at Sylvie. "And you assaulted Gabby on shift, which is a double violation of By-Law 826.1. As she was both your officer at the time of the assault, and your captain's wife." Sylvie got nervous as she heard Matt say that, as that was true.

And she knows it, which is why she's so nervous; especially as she looked at Gabby and hoped to get forgiveness. "Gabby…please, let me." Gabby just glared at Sylvie, while Matt got close to the woman he loves; wrapping his arm around her, he made sure that she was okay by pressing his lips to her forehead as they both held each other close right now. "You okay?" Gabby agreed with Matt as she looked up at the man of her dreams. After which, she watched him bend down and kiss her softly; something which she desperately wants right now. She wants to feel Matt kiss her, which is why she's kissing him right now. "I love you." Matt smiled and agreed with his wife as she said that, well aware that was the case, while also pressing his lips to her forehead as a way to make sure that they're both happy and safe with each other. "Listen, how about we get out of here? Let Boden and Antonio deal with your sister." Gabby shook her head. "Oh no, my brother is going to hear it from my right now." Antonio took a breath as he looked at his sister.

After all, he already knew what he did. "It's okay sis, no need to stress out about it. I already know what I did wrong." Gabby agreed with her brother as he said that, well aware that was the case as she hugged him. "Yeah, you're so dead if I catch you doing that again." Antonio agreed with his sister, smiling. "It won't, because I'm moving with you to Puerto Rico." Gabby smiled, loving that. "I love that idea." Matt agreed with Gabby. "I hope you don't live with us though." Turning her head, Gabby looked at her husband. "At least until he finds a place." Matt nodded, agreeing with his wife as she told him that; after all, that's something he can agree to. "Fine, but only until then." Gabby agreed with her husband as he said that, smiling as she got close to him; hugging him, she smirked as she kissed him softly. "Listen, what do you say we head inside and go have some fun with our friends?" Matt agreed with his wife, smiling as he grabbed her hand so that they could walk in together. "Want me to order us anything?" Gabby smiled. "I need some wings."

Matt agreed with his wife as she said that, well aware that was the case as they made their way into the bar; however, not everybody went into the bar…as Boden decided to stay outside with Sylvie. "Sylvie, do you know how disappointed I am in you?" Sylvie looked up at Chief Boden. "Boden, I can…" Boden shook his head. "No, I don't want to hear it. I don't need an explanation." Sylvie just looked at her chief. "You're just going to take THEIR word?" Boden sighed. "Sylvie, I've known Matt for over a decade, and I've known Gabby just as long. I know who they are, and I know what type of people they are. I also know Matt's past and how he would never joke around with abuse. You don't know them like I do, and you will never know them. I hate to say this Sylvie, but I partially blame you for them leaving Chicago in the first place." Sylvie was shocked. "Excuse me?" Boden nodded. "They're leaving because they need to get away. And now, they're pregnant. I know you brought stress on Gabby, which is the last thing she needs." Sylvie was just shocked.

After all, she's the one that left him in a bind. "Chief, she left you at a moment's notice." Boden agreed. "And I don't blame her, especially not after the reports that I reread and my conversations with them about the state of their marriage of their time. She left to go volunteer in Puerto Rico. She left her husband because she needed a break, and now she needs to go because she's no longer happy here. And I blame you for that. I'm loosing an incredible Captain, and an even better paramedic because you couldn't keep your hands to yourself or behave like a professional. And yes, I believe Gabby and Matt. I believe them as they wouldn't lie in their reports. Yes, has Matt's life been hell since Gabby left him this summer? Of course, it has, but he's found a way to cope and make things work. You, on the other hand, weren't coping. Rather, you were lying through your teeth about what happened. Had I known what I know now, you would've never been promoted to PIC. Nor would you have stayed on the ambulance. I feel like I betrayed Gabby."

Sylvie was mad when she heard that. "Chief, I'm your paramedic too." Boden shook his head. "You got to ride on the ambulance that bears her late best friend's name longer than she did, when you didn't deserve it. We gave you the benefit of the doubt and we felt bad that you were abandoned by your partner for months. And then, I learn all of this? The truth? How you abused a woman who was nothing but nice to you, who mentored you and took you in. She was mourning the death of her best friend and long-time ambulance partner when you joined firehouse 51, and you abused her! That's not okay." Sylvie just got quiet, as she knew Boden was mad. "And then, you play me like a fool? Like you're the victim. I owe my crew a duty to keep them safe! And right now, I do not trust you, which means that I can't have you as part of my team, nor could I ever after you betrayed family. And then you kiss her husband, when she's pregnant with the child they wanted for the longest time! You were at the hospital when they lost their baby!" Sylvie agreed.

After all, that was the truth. "You saw how heartbroken both Gabby and Matt were, and now you ruin this night where they tell us that she's pregnant? That's unacceptable, and I won't stand for unprofessionalism in my firehouse. Tomorrow, you will come to the house and clean out your locker. You will return all CFD uniforms, washed and folded; and this will stay on your record when it comes to you applying to other fire departments. Don't think that you can run away from this Sylvie, as you crossed a line when you abused Gabby. She was your PIC and Matt's wife. I will speak to you another time. But for now, you are to go home and stay away from Matt and Gabby. If you go anywhere near them, my name will be attached to any police complaint that they file. Dismissed." Sylvie nodded, scared out of her mind as she proceeded to leave, while Boden let out a sigh due to the fact that he really feels bad. So much so, that he already knew that he needed to apologize to Gabby for having let her down. God, he just feels absolutely horrible for what he did.

Walking into the bar, Boden took a breath as he looked around for Matt and Gabby as he wanted to speak to Gabby so that he could give her his apologies. Under no circumstances can he condone her actions, nor will he ever let her back at the firehouse. He's furious at Sylvie for what happened, and for how she was treated. And he truly feels like he needs to apologize, as that should've never happened on his watch, which is precisely why he was glad when he saw Matt and Gabby at the back of the bar with her brother. "Yeah, I'm good. I'm just glad I'm breathing and taking it easy." Matt agreed with his wife as she said that, wrapping his arm around her before kissing the side of her head. "Good, especially for the sake of our little one." Boden smiled as he heard Matt say that. "I am so thrilled that you guys are pregnant again." Smiling, Gabby agreed with Chief Boden. "Thanks Chief." Chief then turned to look at Kelly and Stella, as they were already with their friends. "Severide, can I get a moment alone with Matt and Gabby?" Severide agreed.

After all, he clearly wasn't asking. "Of course, chief." Going to grab Stella's hand, Severide smiled as he walked away with his girlfriend; while Boden walked up to the expecting parents, looking directly at the both of them. "Ok. Listen, I need to say this." Gabby just looked at Boden. "Gabby, I am so sorry for what Sylvie did…" Gabby shook her head. "Boden, you didn't…" Boden stopped Gabby. "Gabby, this is a time to listen rather than speak." Gabby nodded. "What she did was unacceptable, and she broke three crucial by-laws which are used to make the workplace safer for both our officers, as well as their family. And that's something that we cannot ignore. I already told her that she's to report to the firehouse tomorrow to clean out her locker. I want to just say this, I am furious over what she did. You welcomed her with open arms after Shay died, and she had no right to treat you that way; especially not on Ambulance 61, which is named in honor of Shay. We're a family, and family sticks together." Matt agreed with Boden, nodding.

After which, Boden looked at Matt. "Matt, on behalf of the CFD, I want to extend my apologies to you as a Captain for not investigating the situation closer and putting you in an awkward situation of having to work with Sylvie when she did that to Gabby. I felt that something was off when Gabby left all of a sudden, but you told me you were having marital problems and she left to Puerto Rico. So, I brushed my concerns aside and just told myself that's all it was. Marital problems, she wanted to leave. I should've followed my instincts and investigated what happened. I am here to tell you that I will ensure that the CFD co-operates in any legal matter which you choose to take against Sylvie, and we will also make sure that policy is changed so that this doesn't happen again." Gabby sighed. "Boden, I should've told you what was happening." Boden shook his head. "Regardless Gabby, you were her officer. That's the truth and will always be the truth. Nothing else needs to be said." Matt agreed with Boden, as that was the truth. "Agreed."

Gabby smiled, agreeing with her husband as she held him close; after which, she felt him bend down and kiss her softly. "You ok? You need a minute? Do you even want to be here anymore?" Taking a breath, Gabby sighed as she didn't feel like being here where Sylvie was. "I'm sorry. Sylvie being here was not a good thing." Matt agreed with Gabby as she said that, while wrapping his arm around her and pressing his lips to her forehead. "Alone, or with your brother?" Gabby sighed. "Alone?" Matt nodded, more than okay with that. "Let me just talk to Kelly, then we'll head home." Gabby agreed with Matt, more than ready to do just that; after all, that's really what she needs right now. Time alone with her husband. Time in bed with her husband.
