It's been eight months since the Iron giant had sacrificed his life to save the town from the nuclear missile that was originally sent with the purpose to destroy him.
He was a hero to the town of Rockwell and the best friend of Hogarth Hughes, a quirky nine year boy. Sure at first he was scared of the giant robot, but he got to know that the giant robot was gentle and curious. Hogarth befriended him and acted as his guide, teaching him things that gave the giant more feelings and how he saw himself.
Sure he may have been destroyed blocking the missile, but the good thing is that he can rebuild himself. Hogarth did receive a screw from the iron giant but that night the screw moved from Hogarth's bed room toward the giant's head in Iceland.
"See you later", Hogarth said to that screw as it went, knowing that one day he would see his friend again. He just didn't know when.
Eight months later, life went back to normal for him. He had made a few new friends and lived a happy life with his mother Annie and Dean, who have moved in and is dating Annie. Hogarth enjoyed having like a father figure, which is what he needed since his bio dad died years ago in action as a Air Force pilot. Yet still, Hogarth hopefully waited for the Iron giant to come back to Rockwell and have great times again.
Life was quiet and almost uneventful for Hogarth. That is, until a week later. Someone had moved into Rockwell. It'd been a while since someone have moved into the small town, and Hogarth was curious to see and know who it is.
One morning, he asked his mom about the new folks in town, while she was cooking breakfast and brewing a pot of coffee for Dean, who was at the table reading the usual newspaper.
"Hey mom, have you heard about the new people that are moving into town? What do they look like? Do they have a boy that my age?"
Annie responded with a laugh.
"Well, aren't you curious as ever. Well, they are a family of two, a young father Mr. Franklin and a girl your age named Deidre."
Hogarth was a little disappointed hearing the girl part. Beside, he wasn't interested much in girls anyway, but he asked more questions.
"What work dose Mr. Franklin do?"
"Well, he used to be in the Air Force like your father. In fact, did you know that him and your dad were friends growing up?"
"Huh, I didn't know that."
"Mr. Franklin is a astronomer and will be teaching astronomy at your school this following school year."
"That sounds pretty cool." Hogarth is a little interested in astronomy, and excels at it very well. Hopefully he would be a nice teacher to be around .
"Deidre, she is a sweet girl and to be around and is just as smart as you are. I'm sure you'll like her when you get to meet her."
"Sure." Hogarth rolled his eyes when his mother wasn't looking. Dean saw it, though, and responded.
"Come on, squirrel boy. Don't be like that now. I'm sure that this girl I know you'll have a crush on". He winked a sly wink, while Hogarth groaned,
"Ugghhh, Dean, cut it out, you're already embarrassing me."
Annie grinned and chucked as she plated breakfast.
"Alright you too, breakfast time. Let's not get too winded up early in the morning."
And with that that sat down for a quiet breakfast.
Later that morning, Hogarth decided to head downtown to spot the new family. He rode though town on his bike, trying to spot a unfamiliar father- daughter pair, as he knew just about everyone in town, but so far no luck. Hogarth decided to stop by Mr Dexter's comic shop, where he usually goes for his comics, to be filled in about the new family, as Mr. Dexter knew about what went on in town.
Hogarth walked through the door and was warmly greeted by Mr. Dexter, who was a kind, warm-hearted man was in his 50s, with a build that was as big as his heart (as a lot of people who know him well say).
Anyway, Mr. Dexter said in his usually bright mood,
"Why Hello there, Hogarth! I see you might be here to the the newest super man comic book."
"No, Mr. Dexter. I came to know about the new people that just moved in town. Do you know where they happen to live or at least anything about them?"
Mr. Dexter thought for a moment before saying,
"Well, I do know that they are moving into their house just half a mile from here on hickory lane. They're a nice family of two, I can say for sure. You're going to meet them today?"
"Um, sorta. I just want to see what they look."
"Good luck which that, Hogarth. I'm sure you'll be fond of them quickly when you get to know them."
Yeah, sure you're right. Well, thanks for the info. Don't you mind if I get that new super hero comic, Mr. Dexter? I have the ten cents in my pocket jacket."
"Sure thing, Sport. You are my favorite customer after all."
After paying for the comic, Hogarth bade farewell and got on his bike, heading down to hickory lane. He search for the house that the new family were moving into, and it wasn't long before he saw a big, blue, two story house. It had a trailer parked in the driveway, the kind that are usually used for moving purposes. Hogarth knew this had to be it. He hid himself and his bike behind the large fence boarded the houses yard and peaked through a medium sized hole.
He could see a middle aged man carry a armful of boxes into the house. This had to be Mr Franklin. Mr Franklin looked lean with a strong, slightly muscular built with dark brown hair and blue eyes. He was wearing a black bomber jacket over a plaid button down shirt with faded blue jeans and sturdy work boots. He looked strong and confident yet humble and kind. Hogarth seemed to like him already.
He couldn't see the daughter and he scanned the yard for any sign of her, but still nothing.
"She's not showing. Maybe she's inside playing with dolls or something like that," Hogarth whispered to himself, jumping to that conclusion.
It was then that he was caught off guard at a sight he never expected to see.
