A/N As I come up with new chapters, I will be editing this story. Prologue has been re-posted.
Prologue:
A Very Special Birth
Lily Potter had decided to give birth at home, rather than at the hospital. Her and James had reasoned it would be safer staying at home behind warded walls than exposing their newborns to a possible attack. Remus, having some knowledge in healing, was their secret keeper and would be helping Lily as well as her friend Morgan, a muggle born witch Lilly had grown up with as a child, deliver the baby. Morgan was happily in love with Severus Snape and he had ordered her to stay with Lily and James for her protection. He didn't want her hurt in any way, shape or form. In any case, with Remus wanting to become a healer, and Morgan being a woman who could support Lily through this, that was how the birth would take place.
It just so happened that Sirius had flooed in mid-way through the birth and had run straight to James to avoid Lily's screams. The two men clasped hands and trembled like frightened girls as they waited to hear the news. James handed Sirius a glass of fire whisky and they clinked their glasses together. Both men drank and slammed down the glasses with shaking hands. After a long, tense moment of silence, they heard the wail of an infant.
"Our babies are here!" James exclaimed so happily Sirius had to smile. "I can't wait to see them!"
"One is, anyway," said Sirius, patting James heartily on the shoulder. "We just need to wait for the second little bundle of joy."
A thin, weak cry broke the silence and the two men looked at each other in fear. Was that the second baby? Why did it sound so sick? Morgan called in a slightly panicked voice for James and Sirius to come into the room. They stood, hands now sweaty with worry and fear.
"We'd better go," said Sirius. "We know more about magical illnesses than Lily and Morgan do. I can hear Remus pacing in there too. This must be something he hasn't dealt with before."
James and Sirius stole softly over to the next room and tip-toed in. Remus held a little baby boy with jet black hair. It was wavy and messy and James grinned, but turned his attention to Lily and Morgan. Sirius gasped as he saw what James hadn't quite registered. Morgan was holding a tiny baby girl in what looked to be some kind of sticky webbing or sack. It covered the whole girl except for one pale hand. Remus showed Sirius and James a spot on the baby boy's ankle which was covered by the same sticky webbing.
"She must have been born clutching her brother's ankle, right?" Sirius asked Remus as James still tried to figure this out.
Remus nodded and Sirius came forward to take the girl from Morgan. He waved his wand over her and a blue light flashed. Sirius' findings now confirmed, he began to wash away the sack with warm water and a soft cloth. Remus washed the strands from the boy's ankle. As Sirius finished washing the sack away, there lay a tiny baby girl, maybe half the size of her brother. She had pale tendrils instead of hair, and her eyes were completely filmed over with white.
"She's blind!" Lily cried with sorrow and fear. "What will we do?"
Sirius gestured that her eyes were still hidden by the filmy strands and explained that they couldn't be wiped clean. Gradually, indigo markings began to form around the girl's eyes and trace down her cheeks like curling vines. Her hair began to turn indigo as well, but some of the tendrils were auburn like Lily's hair, and black like James. The little girl looked very odd, and no one said anything until Sirius put the baby in Lily's arms, being very sure to put her tiny ear over Lily's heart. The girl began to croon softly, there was no other word for it. She ceased her crying and lay contently on Lily's chest, tiny hands grasping at Lily's skin.
"What is she, Sirius?" asked Lily. "She's so beautiful, yet so small. She must be some form of magical creature."
"She's a vine elf," said Sirius in a reverent voice as Remus stopped pacing and gave the boy to James. "Vine elves are very rare, but they crop up mostly in magical families. There hasn't been a vine elf in over 200 years in the Black or Potter lines."
"Why is she blind?" James choked out, rocking his son. His eyes were closed but tears escaped his lashes anyway as he rocked the little baby swaddled in blue. "Neither Lily nor I have a history of blindness in our families."
"I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but vine elves are blind until their full inheritance, which happens at 16," said Sirius calmly, resting a hand on James' shoulder. "This is to get them more in tune with magic and nature. Her markings will soon fade, and her hair will become human hair very quickly after that. Her eyes will open and display their true color, but will still be blind. Once she turns sixteen, she'll either be a dominant or submissive vine elf. Only the Submissive ones grow wings. Wings are unusual in other elven races I know, but I know for a fact submissive males or females grow wings. It must have been some special trait passed down to them by the earth mother."
"How can she go to Hogwarts if she's blind?" asked Remus, sinking down into an armchair and resting his face in his hands. "I don't know if any of the teachers know what to do with her. How many of them have studied rare creatures?"
"By the time she's 11, she'll be able to feel the magical signatures of everyone she knows and identify them," said Sirius. "I can lend you books from the Black vault. Her magic will consist of singing, and she'll have to hold the object she needs to transfigure. As for anything else, she will have to learn to use her senses. She'll probably be in special classes one on one with her tutors. She'll do fine at potions, Severus will see to that. I know almost nothing about the wings, though I'm sure there are more books we could get. As for studying rare creatures, I'm sure Dumbledore and McGonigal know what vine elves are."
"What happens if she's a submissive?" Morgan asked, cleaning everything up and going to make everyone some hot tea, probably laced with whiskey.
"Submissive vine elves are rarer than dominant ones these days, but the vine elf population is still very large. She'll be very sought after by any families with dominant elves or any dominant elves themselves. Once she's fully fledged as it were, she won't be able to change her appearance, so the profit will probably have several field days when she comes to Hogwarts, and when her inheritance strikes. I really hope she has friends and family to give her support during those times."
The adults sipped at their tea and fed the children. The tiny girl would not drink milk, or at least not just milk. While lily breast fed a newly named Harry, Sirius mixed the nectar of flowers with Hollyhock's milk. The tiny girl guzzled her milk then and fell straight to sleep, crooning faintly. Her brother seemed to like it and when the two babies were placed side by side, Harry's hand flopped over onto Hollyhock's chest, fingers splayed.
"Well this has been an eventful day,," said Morgan. "I really hope we can keep her safe. I shudder to think what might happen if she were ever taken away from us. I for one will do my part for her."
"We all wish we could keep her safe," said Lily. "I fear for her safety More than Harry's if that were possible. If that sounds wrong I'm sorry, but she's so tiny and weak. Dumbledore's prophecy never spoke of twins, so either it's inaccurate or he's hiding something, or this little munchkin will help save us all. If we die⦠Well I'll just have to do some more research."
"I should probably get home," said Sirius, standing up. "Remus, you can come with me if you'd like."
"I think I'll take you up on that offer for tonight," said Remus, rubbing his face tiredly. "I need to unwind and maybe have a bath."
"If Peter were alive I wonder what he'd think of this," said Morgan. "I'm glad we found out he was a traitor before we accidentally made him secret keeper or something crazy like that."
"I agree," said James. "Wormtail was a mistake. Who killed him anyway, Moody?"
"I think so," Remus replied, kissing the children goodbye. "I believe it was a direct shot to the back."
"We'll see you all later," Sirius said as they left via the floo.
In the hall of the vine elves, an elder elf with vines so white and frail they looked like they might fall off, just happened to be looking at the records of all the vine elves in history. The book was ever updating itself, and the elder elf watched as the name Hollyhock Morgan Potter was written in indigo ink. Beside her name was recorded the name Harry Sirius Potter, with a line between them showing they were twins, but his name was in regular black ink.
They hadn't had an indigo vine elf in over 50 years. This was a day to be celebrated. Elder Griffiths Palmer just hoped he lived long enough to meet her. Since she was a twin, her and her brother would also have a bond tighter than any other twin bond. She would protect him with her life and vice versa. They were Potters, so elder Griffiths assumed Hollyhock and Harry Potter would be going to Hogwarts. He wasn't sure he could trust Dumbledore, but he'd give him the benefit of the doubt, and write him and his deputy a letter about this new development. Hopefully Hogwarts would be accommodating, or the girl would have to be taken away to be tutored specially. Elder Griffiths pulled a piece of indigo edged parchment from a drawer and dipped a quill into a pot of ink. He would need to contact the other elders first, then see about everything else, including Dumbledore.
Elsewhere, Lucius Malfoy was studying the family tree in the parlor. It showed the Malfoy line going back for centuries, as well as the families they were married into. His eyes followed the line from himself to Narcisa and then to Sirius Black. As he studied the tapestry, he found Doria Black's name connected to Charless Potter's name. The golden line of thread connected them with James and then Lily. Underneath that was a thread naming Harry Sirius Potter, and then a name written in indigo thread naming Hollyhock Morgan Potter.
Lucius turned to the portrait of his great grandfather who hung above the fireplace. He was painted with green vines flowing from his head and to the middle of his back. He was muscular and held a broadsword. Glacius Malfoy was a vine elf, but Lucius' grandfather was not, neither was he nor Draco. When Draco was born, he was a regular human boy.
"What does this mean?" asked Lucius to Glacius Malfoy.
"It means it would do you good to capture that baby and raise her as your own," said Glacius. "The war is raging strongly. Anything could happen. I'm sure Draco would love a sister, and if Lily and James die, I'm sure whoever the bumbling fool puts the twins with, won't know how to take care of a vine elf."
"I'll bide my time then," said Lucius with a nod. "If she is a submissive, I want her with the right dominants. I might have to switch sides after all. It might be for the best."
"Do what is best for the family," Glacius advised. "We do not have many allies as you might recall. Abraxas saw to that. Don't follow in his footsteps."
"Yes great grandfather," said Lucius with a bow. "I must go tell Narcisa."
