Disclaimer: I own nothing, except some minor OCs
There is a Norse legend.
Not as well-known as the tale of Ragnarök, or Odin's victory over Ymir. It does not belong to any of the Eddas. But mothers still tell it to their children, and children still listen to it, so it has not faded into nothing yet.
"There was a man," it says, "a man with the heart of a dragon." Varieties say that he was a dragon who was cursed into being human, or the other way around. But let's stick with what most agree on.
This man had a brother who was a dragon. They won against another, gigantic dragon (the tales do not agree if it spew fire or ice). Then one day, dragonkind left, leaving the man behind.
"Why?" ask the children, and their parents give various answers.
"Because he wasn't actually a dragon." "Because he wanted to stay, for he had found the woman he loved." Or, and that's what a little blonde boy told his mythology-fan friend, "Because he promised to guard them until they can return."
This is another that they all agree on, that one day the dragons are going to come back.
Of course these are just legends. However, people tend to forget that all legends spring from somewhere.

New Berk: Archeological Expedition 2027, nicknamed Project Yggdrasil [1]
May Wong [2] is absolutely baffled. Even though she isn't a historian (her field of study is mathematics), she's been the logistic and head of operations with her good practical skills for dozens of expeditions. Still, she has never ever seen anything like this during her career.
You may ask: what is the source of confusion?
The answer: a Viking box full of scales, found by Carla and Hazel Müller[3]-Gonzalez, the archeologist couple of the mission.
"I think," May says slowly, "we need to call an expert in. I have a friend, she might be able to identify the content of this box."
"Who?" asks Carla.
"You may have already heard of her. Dr. Olivia Kullersen." She looks down and lifts up a beautiful black scale with a gloved hand.
Unaware of the happenings not far away, a black dragon lifts his head. Even though he is almost a millennia old, he is still in his prime.
His mate has returned.
The white dragoness lets her camouflage fade, and puts the fish she carried in her maw down.
/The humans are still there/. She says with quite a bit distaste.
/Not surprising. Humans are a curious and stubborn group. Thank you for the dinner/. Toothless nuzzles her then picks one up and eats it whole before offering, /Still, you know we cannot keep this up, Moon. Maybe I can't fly, but I am still a capable hunter. I'm black, and there is plenty of game in this forest. Rest, I will get breakfast tonight/.
A phone rang insistently until Olivia picked it up. "Hello? May? Its' good t' hear from ya." She paused as May spoke. "June's fine, but she's out right now, I'm afraid."
Juniper Wong, May Wong's daughter and longtime friend of Olivia Kullersen's son Thomas, decided to stay with them while her mother was away. This arrangement wasn't alien to them.
"Oh? Really?"
"But what of the kids? I can't really leave them here..."
"I see. Okay, can you write the details down, and send me an e-mail about it? I am going to pack the suitcases. The kids should be home soon, anyway. See you soon!" Olivia puts down the phone smiling.
When Tom and June arrive with the groceries, Olivia greets them with a grin. "Pack up, we're going on a vacation to New Berk!"
Dear Reader,
At this point I should, probably mention that I have almost no experience/knowledge about Chinese culture. (Which is like, fine because 9Realms has even less and they have a bigger budget than me XD).
Whatever I say I have read it on Wikipedia, therefore should be taken with a grain of salt. Any and all pointers are welcomed, and I will try to fix it, if possible. Everything that I think is relevant or differs from canon will be mentioned in ANs like this, and I really hope that I won't insult any folks who happen to stumble upon this. If I do, I am sorry, I tried.
[1] It is an archeological expedition in the far north. Why would it have a greek mythological name?
[2] May, Eugene and June Wong:
For reasons unknown almost everyone in 9R has the same surname in a family. However according to Wikipedia Chinese women don't usually take their husband's last names except in more Westernish places, and people tend to not marry to other's of the same surname.
But Wong can be a transcription of both Huang and Wang, so technically it could be that May and her husband have different last names just agreed to use the same spelling, because they often work in English speaking countries and being referred as Mr and Mrs Wong made more sense than Mr Huang and Ms Wang.
If I had to guess in canon the parents have never actually lived in China, with as much as they keep saying that June has Chinese ancestry, while never being referred as Chinese herself. And/Or May just had the kids have her surname, because she doesn't seem the kind to change her family name.
[3] Hazel got a last name. She deserves it, and I would die on that hill.
