Dipper's hands trembled as he gazed out of the bus window. He and Mabel were approaching Gravity Falls and would reach their destination in just a few minutes. Under normal circumstances, he would have been elated, especially since it had been such a long time since their last visit. However, he was currently ravenous! He had come to accept his newfound condition and had even resorted to drinking the blood of a few animals in the past two weeks, primarily squirrels.
Unfortunately, something as small as a squirrel wouldn't quell his hunger, and certainly wouldn't facilitate his transformation. Two weeks hadn't been enough for him to come to terms with the fact that he needed to consume human blood. What made it even more challenging was that he lived among humans—his family and a particularly plump pig! His self-control around them was tenuous at best. Given his current state, he realized that he would pose a danger to Mabel if he continued to be around her.
Furthermore, he had to exercise caution and minimize his exposure to the sun. While it wasn't fatal, as long as he wasn't overly exposed, it would inevitably result in painful burns after about an hour, and the condition would only worsen. He couldn't help but imagine that if he accidentally dozed off on a beach, there would be nothing left of him but ashes by the end of the day. Fortunately, at least his head was shielded by Wendy's hat.
Holding off on discussing this with Ford until they reached Gravity Falls was a misguided notion, and believing that he could resist the urge to consume blood until then was rather presumptuous. Their great-uncles wouldn't even arrive for another week!
"Are you feeling alright, bro-bro?" Mabel asked beside him while Waddles was sleeping on the seat behind them. The fact that the driver even accepted him on the bus despite his large size, was a miracle. "You look a bit pale,"
"Eh. Traveling by bus is annoying, that's all," Dipper answered, masterfully hiding his shaking hands.
"You could have driven us there if you had gotten your license, you know?" Mabel stated with a snicker as Dipper furrowed his brows.
"You're the same age as me. You could have taken the test," Dipper grumbled in annoyance.
"I would have loved to, but I couldn't with all my club activities," Mabel shrugged. Considering that she was in multiple clubs and that she was really popular at school, it didn't surprise Dipper much that she didn't have the time.
Her brother didn't respond. Instead, his attention became fixated on her neck. Even though only a small portion of it was visible due to her sweater, it was enough to nearly make him salivate. Her scent had always been the most potent in the house, perhaps because she was the youngest. Still, his body constantly urged him to sink his fangs into her neck every time she got too close.
Maybe, just maybe… He could even train his hypnosis on her. He could hypnotize her, so she would let him drink her blood and she would forget everything. It sounded so… Easy… No! He couldn't do that! Not to Mabel, at the very least! But all he wanted was a decent meal! It wasn't his fault that his sister looked delicious!
He supposed he had no alternative but to bide his time until nightfall and then search for random townsfolk—someone who would be wandering alone in the darkness. It was preferable to harming someone close to him. Yet even with a stranger, he would need to exercise extreme caution to avoid causing them harm.
"So, I'm guessing you plan on having a summer romance again?" Dipper inquired, trying to think about something else. Something that would help him forget the meal sitting at his side.
"Yup! And I hope I won't date gnomes this time!" Mabel responded with a shudder as she remembered Jeff and the other gnomes. "Or zombies. Even if the zombie was better than the gnomes," She added.
Dipper was honestly surprised that she didn't even figure out that she was dating a zombie the summer of three years ago.
"Dating gnomes, a zombie, a merman, Gideon, or that puppet guy… You know you could try dating a normal person, right?" Dipper suggested as he finally managed to look away.
"No way! Maybe, I could have done that before, but my goal this summer is to finally find a hot vampire!" She exclaimed excitedly as Dipper's eyes nearly came out of their sockets. "We could have a date in the moonlight, in some clearing away from everyone. Then he would tell me how much he wants to spend all of eternity with me! It would be so romantic…" She told dreamily.
"Why are you so attracted by vampires, anyway? You've never met one!" Dipper argued, feeling a blush creeping up his cheeks since she technically did meet one. "I doubt they're like the ones in Twilight,"
"See? That's your problem, Dipper! You don't believe enough! I'm sure you would love a nice vampire lady!" She retorted in amusement.
"No, that's not it! Vampires are just bad news, okay?!" Dipper groaned.
"Aw… I see why you don't want a vampire girlfriend… You still got your eyes on Wendy, don't you?!" Mabel teased him as she playfully punched his shoulder. "You should really move on, Dipper. Girls don't like desperate guys," She added more seriously. She was also tempted to say that he should pay attention to other girls, such as Pacifica, but refrained from doing so.
"I did move on! I dated girls… Even if it ended badly," He sighed as Mabel patted his back.
"I'm sure you'll have an awesome summer romance too, broseph. You just have to look in the right places. Something tells me you've got an admirer!" She ended in a sing-song voice.
"I would rather just enjoy my summer and have fun, Mabel. Explore and maybe help Grunckle Ford with his research if there's anything new," Dipper replied. He didn't mention the fact that he would also need to learn more about his new powers and eventually cure himself.
"But that's boring!" Mabel retorted, only for Dipper to simply look away.
She wasn't surprised anymore. Her brother was so oblivious that he couldn't even see that Pacifica clearly had feelings for him! She dropped hints, texted him regularly, and even sent him Valentine's cards! Of course, she hadn't made them explicit enough, so Dipper assumed she was sending them as a friend.
If only he could realize how fortunate he was to have captured Pacifica's attention. Mabel had grown much closer to the blonde, who had become one of her closest friends. Over the years, the wealthy girl had undergone significant changes, and even though she still had some snobbish tendencies, she had become a much better person overall. While Mabel might not be the best source of relationship advice, she could admit that Dipper struggled in the romance department. Her earlier teasing aside, she genuinely hoped he would move on, especially since Wendy had made it clear that she wasn't interested and that he was too young.
"Oh, look! We're there!" Mabel suddenly exclaimed as she pointed at the 'Welcome to Gravity Falls' sign they had just driven past.
"Yeah… We're finally home," Dipper whispered warmly. It nearly made him forget his hunger. Keyword being 'nearly'.
"Come on, Waddles! You're gonna see your home again!" Mabel remarked as she got off her seat, followed by her pet pig. Seeing as they were near the bus stop, Dipper followed them while carrying both of their baggage.
From what he had heard, Soos had expanded and renovated the Mystery Shack, making it larger. This meant there were more tourist traps and phony attractions, but it also provided more space for living accommodations. Considering it now belonged to him and Melody, along with his grandmother, Dipper surmised that they probably wouldn't be able to accommodate him and Mabel for the summer due to limited space.
Fortunately, Soos reassured them that this would always be their home and that he had deliberately added extra rooms to accommodate them during their summer breaks. Even Ford's lab in the basement was still intact. Hearing it put that way, Dipper found it hard to decline the offer. However, Stan insisted on building a cabin in the woods near the Shack, just in case they ever needed it.
"So, is Soos gonna pick us up?" Dipper asked as he got out of the bus, not noticing Mabel's smirk.
"Only if you don't want me to pick you up, guys," A feminine voice responded, making Dipper widen his eyes as he looked up.
She was there. The woman he thought was the woman of his dreams 5 years ago, and maybe some part of him still thought that. He shouldn't have been surprised to see her wearing his cap, but it warmed his heart nonetheless. Her auburn hair still cascaded in wild waves around her shoulders, and her eyes, like a pair of deep, mysterious pools, sparkled with the same mischievous glint that had always drawn him in.
She was taller than Mabel, he noticed, but shorter than him. He was finally taller than her! A red flannel shirt was tied around her waist, showing the black tank top she was wearing, and her arms, which may have not been muscly, were still obviously strong. Dipper didn't know if it was yet again because of his vampiric hunger or because it was Wendy, but he had to muster all his strength to look away from the skin she was showing.
She also wore black pants with brown boots. She was now 20, and now that he finally laid his eyes on her for real, he could confirm that she also had the figure of a woman. Her clothes did nothing to hide her much bigger breasts and slightly larger hips than she had 3 years ago.
He gulped while the redhead was smirking, looking at him, and holding a hand on her hips. Mabel suddenly hit him in the sides with her elbow, pulling him out of his trance. Wait, how long was he staring at the older girl?
"Wendy! I thought you wouldn't want to pick us up," Dipper blushed as Wendy scoffed playfully.
"I know I'm lazy, but not that much! I had to be the one to welcome you," The redhead replied as she approached them.
"I'm so happy to see you again, Wen-Wen!" Mabel greeted her with a hug, embracing her tightly in her arms.
"I'm happy too. It's so weird seeing you two all grown up!" Wendy said as Mabel pulled away with a pout.
"Yeah, but I'm not the alpha twin anymore," She grumbled as Wendy ruffled her hair in amusement.
"I can see that! You're even taller than me now, Dipper!" The older woman exclaimed as she suddenly grabbed the trapper hat from the boy's head, and put his cap back instead. No one could deny who she was now that she had her hat back! She looked at him from head to toe, her curiosity piqued as she noticed something. "Did you also hit the gym?" She asked while lightly squeezing his arms and checking them out.
"Thank God he did because he showers way more often now!" Mabel remarked as Dipper blushed both from Wendy's touching and Mabel's comment.
"Mabel!" He admonished her as Wendy snickered.
"So those are the contact lenses you were talking about?" She questioned while looking at his eyes.
"Uhm, yeah," He answered as the older woman nodded.
"Nice, hope you're not getting emo on us, though. We don't need another Robbie," Wendy laughed as Dipper nervously chuckled.
"No way!" He retorted. No amount of puberty would have turned him into a Robbie, thankfully.
"Glad to hear it! Let's take your baggage to my car!" She said as she grabbed the briefcases and bags Dipper was carrying before he could even protest. He wondered if she noticed him staring earlier. She didn't say anything about it, but that didn't mean much considering she knew he had a crush on her the first summer and didn't mention it even once until he confessed down in the bunker.
Since Soos gave Wendy a pay raise, and she still worked at the Mystery Shack every summer, she could afford to buy herself a car. A red Honda Accord to be more specific, which she was quite proud of since it was much better than her father's old truck. Her father, on the other hand, paid for her college with their savings.
It would truly feel like old times… Except Stan and Ford weren't there yet, but they would be soon.
Unfortunately, once they got in the car and Dipper wasn't totally embarrassed anymore, he was reminded of his hunger yet again. His eyes drifted toward Wendy's pale skin as he contemplated driving his fangs into her neck without even thinking about the consequences. He would only take a few sips! He nearly slapped himself, but still managed to resist the temptations with a shake of his head.
The sun was setting, so in a few hours… He would sink his fangs in someone's neck. He was so focused on that fact that he didn't even pay attention to what Wendy and Mabel were saying in the car. Although, he did hear that Mabel told her he wasn't feeling well and was likely tired from the journey.
"Welcome back, dudes! I'm so glad to see you!" Soos declared as they came out of the car, and hugged them both.
"We're glad too, Soos! How's Melody?" Mabel inquired.
"She's doing great!" Soos answered. The two weren't dating anymore but were married. Melody was even pregnant! And of all the people Soos knew, Mabel was easily the proudest of him. "Need any help bringing your baggage upstairs?" He offered as Wendy scoffed in pride.
"Nah, these two and I are enough, don't worry," She said while pointing at Dipper and Mabel.
The inside of the shack hadn't changed much, but it wasn't surprising since that was only the main room. The statue Mabel made of Stan was still there too. The first one was made by Soos himself, but when Mabel saw it the next summer, she couldn't help but destroy it and replace it with a better one. She worked on it as hard as she did with the wax statue.
"My room's the one downstairs, Wendy. I can take my baggage myself, but you can help out Dipper if you want to," Mabel stated as she took her bags and looked at Waddles. "Let's take a look at your new room, Waddles!" She exclaimed as the pig oinked and followed after her.
"Well if you insist," Wendy shrugged with a smile before bending over to pick up Dipper's bags.
"Don't worry, I got it," He said before picking them up himself.
"You don't have to, man. Mabel told me you weren't feeling well," Wendy interjected, only for the boy to shake his head.
"Can't let a lady do all the work while I'm lazing around," Dipper chuckled, making the redhead smirk.
"When did you become such a smooth talker?" She whistled as she followed him upstairs.
"Well… You know, I grew up and all that," Dipper laughed.
Wendy did know. Obviously, it would be hard not to notice how much the boy had changed and grown into a fine man. He was still stammering around her, but that was probably because they hadn't seen each other in 3 years since he was speaking fine on the phone. He was handsome, that was one thing she only noticed now that they were face to face.
Once she noticed that, she couldn't help but look over his whole body again. Again, his arms were beefier than they were years ago. Certainly a far cry from the 'noodle arms' he had when she met him. Unfortunately, his hoodie wasn't showing much, but she would bet that he was fit and strong under those clothes. Oh, how she wanted to take them off and check it herself.
Wait… Why was she even thinking like that in the first place?! Dipper was just a friend! You didn't date friends! Unless you wanted to ruin your friendship and potentially the whole friend group like when Robbie and Tambry began dating. Granted, they weren't teenagers anymore, and they gained some maturity… Some. So that wasn't the biggest issue. She already rejected him once, so she didn't get to think about him this way now. Especially since he may have moved on from her since. Besides, the initial problem didn't change. The age gap. It would be even weirder since she was 20, wouldn't it? Sure, Dipper's birthday was in two months, but still…
No! She shouldn't be considering something like that! She had her chance before, and she didn't take it, and that had been the right choice, right? Yes, it was the right choice. She should just forget it and avoid any drama. It would be a shame if this summer was like the first, with one of them crushing on the other and having awkward moments.
"We were thinking of having a welcome party for you two with the gang tonight," Wendy suddenly said, trying to forget about what troubled her earlier while Dipper was unpacking his things.
Dipper bit his lower lip. He needed to go out and EAT! Any more wasting time, and he would go insane! It was safer for him to just bite someone real quick, then go back to bed and sleep. After that, he would just hunt for animals in the forest and have fun with everyone else without raising any suspicions.
However, only silence came out of his mouth. He wanted to refuse and say he was too tired, but Wendy's gorgeous green eyes somehow bewitched him. How could he ever refuse her? No, he wasn't totally all over Wendy again… He simply considered her his best friend! That was all. An extremely beautiful best friend, but nothing else.
"Hope it won't be in a haunted convenience store this time," Dippr laughed, ignoring the rumbling in his throat which wanted nothing more but to make him drive his fangs into her.
"Nope! Although, I wouldn't mind seeing you in a lamb costume again," Wendy snickered as Dipper blushed in embarrassment.
"Ha ha, very funny," Dipper replied sarcastically while trying to look angry, only to fail as he and Wendy shared another laugh.
"The others may not say it but they missed you and your sister, especially you Dr. Funtimes," Wendy teased. "But seriously, it's good to have you back, Dipper," She added before embracing him in a tight hug.
Dipper immediately froze up in surprise but quickly responded by hugging her back. This was not a good time for hugs! He was so close to her neck… And her smell was so strong that it filled up his nose completely. He could even hear her heartbeat thanks to his increased hearing. He sniffed the air a couple of times with her hair in his face, taking in her scent. Right now, it was as if someone served him a plate of bacon, and he was salivating at the thought of taking a bite. He gulped before slowly opening his mouth, his fangs were close to her neck.
Meanwhile, Wendy enjoyed the warmth of his embrace. Although his body did seem a bit cold, she didn't think too much of it. Now that she had her arms around him, she could definitely say that he was stronger, more fit.
What was she doing? That hug was lasting much more than it should, and she didn't want him to get the wrong idea. She cleared her throat, and pulled back, breaking away from the hug. Dipper looked just as flustered as she was but was also sweatier for some reason.
"Anyway, yeah… I think I should get back to work. You're free to join me," She said with a barely disguised blush.
"N-Nah, it's alright. I'm not feeling too well, so I'll rest until tonight. Just tell everyone else not to come in here until then, and text me when it's time to go," Dipper replied as Wendy cocked an eyebrow.
"Uhm, sure!" She nodded. She wasn't sure why he wanted to be all alone, but she didn't question it. "Bye, Dip!" She added before exiting the room and closing the door behind her.
As she closed the door behind her, Wendy leaned on it and sighed. Why did he have to become so handsome? Sure, he was cute before, but she expected he would simply retain a boyish charm. It was alright! It wasn't like she had a crush on him or something! Yes, he was tall, strong, and handsome, so much so that she wanted to kiss him right where he stood.
And she was pretty sure he was still as intelligent, kind, and understanding as he was in the past. She knew she could freely talk with him without the fear of being judged, and that she could have any kind of fun with him. They could probably do anything ranging from an adventure in the forest to a romantic dinner. Indeed, if it were anyone else, he would have been her dream guy… Since she didn't have a crush on him and wouldn't think of all those things while looking at him.
"Uh oh," Wendy widened her eyes in realization.
Inside the room, Dipper held his head as he collapsed to his knees. How he managed to hide the amount of sweat over his body, he didn't know, but Wendy didn't seem to notice. He was so hungry! His stomach felt like a black hole! He needed blood, now! Unfortunately, animal blood (no matter the amount) could not get rid of a vampire's hunger once they were in a starved state.
Looking at the back of his hands, he also noticed they were red. A bit of smoke was even coming out of them! Sun would do that to you… Especially if you are a Lesser Vampire. He was lucky he was on the bus most of the time. Since the sun was setting, he wouldn't be as affected. Now… Now was the time to look for prey before it was too late. Before he went crazy and attacked someone he loved.
If Wendy did what he asked of her, then no one should be coming into this room. However, he decided to lock the door just in case. Now… Like he practiced. He should turn into mist. Dipper closed his eyes, imagining himself evaporating, getting lighter. That was his method, but he didn't really know if it was the correct way to do it.
He drew in a few breaths, then… His body was slammed against the floor! He groaned in pain as he rubbed his head, wondering what the hell happened until he noticed everything in the room suddenly got bigger. He widened his eyes before looking at his hands, which were replaced by wings!
"Damn it! I turned into a bat!" He shouted in exasperation. "Come on, Dipper, focus!" He slapped his face with his wings before closing his eyes again.
He returned to his human form, and after a couple of seconds, his body turned into mist. He did it! He still wasn't used to it, though. Having no body felt so weird. Despite that, he could still see as if he had eyes.
He flew out of the window and then followed the path to the town while hiding in the shadows of the trees. He needed to hide from the sun, but also people. Even in his current state, he felt the cravings growing in intensity.
No! He had to resist! It took him a few minutes, but he reached the town eventually. There were still people outside, as expected. However, he didn't even pay attention to who was outside as he hid behind and between houses. Since he was getting starved, his senses were going haywire.
To him, the people he was seeing were simply shades or silhouettes with a good smell. He still had enough sense to know that he needed a target that was alone and away from prying eyes. With that in mind, he flew near the edge of the town, hoping to find someone alone.
As if God heard him, and sent him a saving grace for some reason, Dipper's misty eyes landed on a figure standing on the sidewalk. From the long hair, the feminine curves, and the nice bust, it was a female. A woman slightly taller than his sister. She was looking at her phone with a hand on her hips as if she was bored and waiting for someone. He couldn't recognize her because of his hunger, but it didn't matter. Indeed, there was no one else with them.
He reformed a few meters behind her, crouching down as his saliva dropped to the ground below. He put on his hood, to try and hide his identity, then slowly sneaked toward his target. Was he really about to do this? Attack a stranger? A poor girl who was minding her own business? He needed to! Besides, she wouldn't die if he was careful!
He sniffed the air, taking in her scent. She smelled like lavender. Was that the scent of her perfume or her blood? He didn't know, but it truly smelled so good! He licked his lips, then lunged at her.
The woman gasped in shock and fear as an arm wrapped around her waist, making her drop her phone on the ground. She couldn't even scream, call for help, or even talk to him before he put a hand over her mouth. The woman let out muffled shouts as she struggled against his grip, but she couldn't escape his arm as he used his other hand to tilt her head to the side to expose her neck. Her skin looked smooth and as soft as silk, and her racing heart made him even hungrier.
He didn't waste any more time and sank his two fangs into her pretty and slender neck. He began drinking, draining her of her life juice. This was the first time he tasted human blood, and it was… Delicious! Naturally, the woman attempted to shout even louder once she was confronted with the fact that he drove his teeth into her flesh, but it was futile.
It wouldn't hurt her anyway. A vampire's saliva's purpose was to make the blood-drinking painless, and it would also prevent the prey from bleeding after it was over.
Nonetheless, her blood tasted so much better than he thought! Why didn't he do this earlier?! The woman's hand suddenly shot up to claw at his face, but she missed miserably and didn't even have the strength to do anything. Her warm blood flowed freely down his throat as if he wasn't drinking through his teeth.
It tasted sweet. Sometimes like honey, it suddenly changed to chocolate. The manual he read said that the taste would change depending on the vampires. Blood would have the same taste as the vampire's favorite food if they were turned. It was different for pure-blooded vampires though.
Dipper breathed through his nose while closing his eyes to fully experience this. He wondered if the taste also changed depending on the prey… He held her tighter as she stopped struggling and her body went limp. After all, the smell was certainly different. While Wendy smelled like freshly cut grass, this woman smelled like a magnificent field of flowers.
It wasn't just blood, he wanted to run his tongue across her neck and explore every part of her body, then drain her completely. Wait… No! No! What was he doing?! He suddenly widened his eyes as his senses came back to him. He was killing her!
He swiftly pulled his fangs out, leaving behind two red holes in her neck. Without even paying attention to what he was doing, he let go of the woman. She didn't even stand for a second before collapsing to the pavement. Dipper wiped his mouth, although there was no blood on it, then turned into mist and quickly escaped. He didn't even check on her, didn't even look at her when she fell. Thus he didn't know who she was, but he didn't want to see the face of someone he potentially just killed!
Maybe he should have taken her to the hospital, but he was panicking way too much for that. No, he had to go home and wait for Wendy's text to hang out with the others. Until then… He would pray that the woman survived.
While the young vampire was struggling to come to terms with what he had done, the woman groaned. She was still sprawled all over the floor. She was nearly as pale as a corpse because of all the blood she lost, and the dark rings under her eyes only contributed to showing the miserable state she was in. She was getting in and out of consciousness as she desperately tried to get to her phone, only for her arm to shake and bat in a completely different direction.
Everything was blurry… She was tired and sleepy… Was she… Was she dying? What happened to her? What did that man do? As she closed her eyes, a car stopped right in front of her before a butler ran out of it.
"Miss Pacifica! Miss Pacifica! Are you alright?! Please, respond!" The butler shook her as the woman's arm simply fell to her side. "H-Hold on, please! I'll take you to the hospital! Just hang in there!" The butler said before bending his knees and picking her up bridal style. He carefully and gently laid her on the back seats before running to the driver's seat.
The last thing Pacifica heard was the car starting and driving as fast as possible.
