Chapter 5
The Precinct
Beckett and Castle stepped off the elevator, Castle heading for the breakroom, Beckett to the bullpen where she found Esposito, Ryan, Feller and Rhymer at their desks. "Where is this John Woo?" she asked to no one in particular. They all pointed to the conference room. "Has he been interviewed yet." They all shook their heads no. "Why?'
"We were waiting for Analdo," replied Ryan.
"Figured she wanted to conduct it," Espo said.
"Analdo is taking care of a personal matter. Give me a few minutes and I'll go in and talk to them." Directing her attention to Espo she told him "send in LT." she then headed to her office.
When Castle walked into Beckett's office he found LT standing there receiving instructions. Sargeant Lawernce Tolliver (LT to everyone except his underlings) was in charge of all the officers assigned to the homicide division. "You got it," Castle heard LT say as he turned and exited, giving Castle a nod on his way out.
"What's up?" Rick asked sitting her vanilla latte down on her desk.
"Don't know but there's something fishy about this case. I mean a body placed on a statute, a phony name, a dead tv reporter. Someone is going to a lot of trouble to hide what is really going on." Kate then leaned back in her chair and took a drink of the coffee Rick made for her giving an approving "hmm" afterwards.
Beckett entered the conference room and greeted the Woo family. She apologized for the mix up telling them they received some bad information in regards to the victim. She then directed her attention to John asking him her standard array of questions for which she got mostly negative replies.
Beckett sent the Woo family home, suggesting that John go with them till they caught whoever was doing these killings. She then returned to her office. With nothing else to do she got busy on the reports for the brass at One Police Plaza. She leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes. "There, done," she said to herself just as she heard a knock on her door. Opening her eyes she saw Detective Analdo standing there. "Come on in Inez and have a seat."
"How'd you like the apartment?" Kate asked.
"It's perfect, well within my budget. I've already signed the lease. I'll start moving in this weekend, that is, if we can get these cases solved. So, bring me up to date on the Cosetti murder.
Kate told her everything she observed and learned at the Cosetti crime scene including her and Rick's theory that Cosetti might have even known her killer. She then told Inez about her interview with the live John Woo and thought it best if John went back to Schenectady and stayed with his parents, to which Inez fully agreed.
"I swung by CSU on my in. They're running our fake John Woo prints through our database but so far haven't got a match. I also went by the morgue and spoke with Perlmutter, nice guy by the way. He showed and told me basically the same things he told you. So what now?"
"It's your show. You tell me," Kate said with a snicker.
"Think I will concentrate on the Cosetti murder, even though the two appear to be connected, we won't know how until we find out who our fake John Woo is. I'll keep Ryan on the camera footage looking for our three dudes. I'm going to send Espo and Feller to WHNY while Rhymer does some digging into Cosetti."
"Exactly what I'd do. I knew making you team leader was a smart choice. Go get it done and let me know if I can help in any way."
"Sure thing Cap," then getting up to leave.
Beckett rose from her desk and went to the window where she watched as Inez doled out her instructions. She was envious of her in a way. Sure she missed working cases but she also liked where she was now. She had worked hard to get here, Captain of the Twelfth Precinct…her home.
"You ready for lunch?" Rick asked coming up behind her and wrapping her in his arms.
Kate leaned back into him. She loved the feel of him against her, always have since the very first time, it was where she felt safe, encased in his arms. "Yeah," she finally replied, "but not Remy's."
"Thought we'd just go across the street to Bernice's. Her beef stew is today's special."
"That sounds good," she said turning around to face him, then cupping his face in her hands place her lips to his and kissed him, and like most of their kiss it began to escalate but a knock on her door forced them to separate. She peered over Rick's shoulder and saw LT standing there.
Rick released his hold on her and she walked over to where LT was standing. "What did you find out?"
"The officer that received that information was Martin Milner. He got it from a student who said his name was Gregory Peck. I asked him to describe him. Officer Milner told me the student was five-feet, one or two, red hair, wore a Fordham baseball cap, jeans and blue sweater. He didn't see any distinguishing marks."
"Very good LT. give that information to Detective Analdo, and thank you."
"Any time, Cap."
"Let's go, Rick; all of a sudden I have a hankering for beef stew."
Beckett and Castle stepped of the elevator and made straight for the bullpen so Beckett could get a look at the murder board. She instantly saw Esposito and Feller huddled together. Along with them was an older dark skinned gentleman with black curly hair, graying at the temples.
Esposito stood and waved her over, Castle, of course, tagging right along with her. Castle was the first to recognize who was with them. "George," he said.
The man stood, immediately recognizing Castle, held out his right hand for a handshake saying, "Richard Castle. I haven't seen you since the last Nikki Heat book release party."
"The next one comes out in a couple months," Castle responded taking George's hand. "I'm sure Paula will be sending you an invitation."
Esposito stood there, a look of scorn on his face. "Jeez, Castle, is there anyone in this city you don't know?"
"Not if they work with ink and paper," He replied.
Beckett gave Castle a smile at his response. And although George Gregory was actually one of Paula Haas' contacts, the two men had met before. "Good to see you again George," she said also shaking his hand. "What can you tell us about Laure Cosetti."
"Here," he said, handing Beckett a micro disk. "She gave this to me a few days ago, told me if anything happened to her to take it to the police. I was just getting ready to bring it to you when your two detectives showed up.
"Well'', why don't we go in my office and see what's on this."
Beckett inserted the disk into a slot on her laptop where it brought up two files, a picture file and an audio file. She clicked on the picture file first and several rows of photos appeared. She clicked on the first one, it was an alley shot of a building, she went to open the second photo when Castle stopped her. "That's the rear entrance to the Pennybaker Club,' he said.
"Are you sure?" Beckett asked.
"Yes. Enlarge it." She did as he requested. "See here, the missing brick (pointing to a spot on the screen). That's where Joe Flynn hid the Blue Butterfly."
As Beckett scrolled through the remaining pictures, she made the comment, "it looks like it's being renovated."
"I'll say, and not into just any type of club, but a gambling club," Castle said.
"What makes you think that?" Feller asked.
"Enlarge picture fourteen, Beckett. Doing so she saw what Castle was referring to. There above a large opening was a sign that read Roulette Room. "Picture eighteen," he said. This pix had a sign that said Blackjack Alley.
"Let's see what's on the audio file," Beckett said while closing the picture file and clicking on the audio file. A woman's voice came on, introduced herself as Laura Cosetti, then began her narrative.
If whoever is listening to this, I hope you have been through the pictures of the Pennybacker Club first, and can see that it is being renovated into a gambling club, which in itself is not illegal in the state of New York, but what may surprise you is who the ultimate owner is. The purchaser on the Bill of Sale is listed as Malcom Enterprise. That's where I began my investigation and what I discovered is that at about the same time Malcom Enterprises also purchased clubs in the Flushing Meadows area of Queens and the Baychester area of the Bronx. Upon further investigation into Malcom I discovered it is a subsidiary of Golden Clubs, Inc., out of Las Vegas, Nevada, which belongs to CALCLUBS Company, in Los Angeles, California. CALCLUBS, is part of a conglomerate owned by HOTCLUBS, Inc. headquartered in Houston, Texas, which is part of Turnmore Investments, LLC, headquartered in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Turnmore only has two investors/owners, Thomas Moretti and Charles Turner. And now here is a little tidbit of information on Misters Moretti and Turner. Moretti sits on the Board of Directors and is the CFO of HOTCLUBS, Inc. Turner has the same positions at CALCLUBS.
The file then stopped and Beckett removed the disk.
"Wow," came a chorus of echoes from all those in the room. "She is good," Fuller said.
"I'll say she is," Castle followed, "to run down all that information took a lot of work."
"It also gave us a gaggle of possible killers, Beckett said. "Moretti has a host of hitmen he could call on to commit our murders."
"But only one that Corsetti knew well enough to allow into her apartment if our theory has any validity to it," Castle replied.
Detective Analdo stepped off the elevator and went straight to the bullpen but found no one there. Suddenly she heard a loud "Wow" coming from the direction of Captain Beckett's office. "What's going on here," she asked as she reached Beckett's door and seeing that everyone has gathered there.
"Hey there," Rhymer said, "come on in."
"Okay everyone, let's get out there and start digging. George, thanks for bringing this to us."
As everyone left Analdo took a seat in one of the chairs across from Beckett's desk. Castle took the next to her. Beckett reached across her desk and handed the disk to Analdo telling her to scope out the photos then listen to the audio. "Where you been," Beckett then asked her.
"Down in CSU," Analdo replied. "They got a hit off the FBI database. Victims name is Daniel Sullivan, works at the Sapphire Coast Hotel and Casino. Got his photo from Jersey DMV and took it to the morgue for comparison, it was a match."
"Good work, Inez. Now all we need to do figure out is who killed him. I'll call the New Jersey State Police, have them send someone from their Criminal Investigation Bureau to the hotel." As Analdo left Beckett made the call.
Just as Analdo sat down Ryan approached. "What ya got?" she asked.
"Probably not what you are hoping," he replied. "Our three dudes hailed down a cab at the corner of Columbus Avenue and W. 64th Street. I was able to zoom in and get the cab number. I then called the cab company and got the destination, Columbia University. The fare was paid with a credit card. Name on the card was Brian Silliger."
"Go find him," Analdo ordered.
"Let's go partner," Ryan called out to Esposito.
"Rhymer. Come up with anything new on Cosetti," Analdo enquired?
"She may have been bisexual," he answered.
"How do you know that?"
"Mr. Gregory mentioned it when we first asked about her."
"Okay, anything else?"
"She has credit card debt of ten thousand dollars, most of it spent at the Sapphire Coast. And another five thousand at Patricia's Place, a women's only bar in Midtown."
"Then it's possible she knew Daniel Sullivan."
"Feller," she said, "What about Sullivan?"
"He worked in security. Mostly surveillance, scanning the tables looking for cheaters," he answered.
"Look guys, if we can find a connection between Cosetti and Sullivan, then maybe we can find out why they were killed and by whom. So, dig deep, okay."
"You got it," they replied as one.
Beckett stepped from her office and signaled Analdo over. When A, Analdo arrived Beckett told her to have a team at the NJSP office in West Creek at 10am tomorrow, the captain there would assign an investigator to accompany them to the Sapphire Coast. Analdo then returned and gave the information to Rhymer and Fuller.
At 3:45pm Ryan and Esposito sauntered back in and reported their finding on Brian Silliger and his two buddies, Wilber Marshall and Tom Berenger. The three of them had been playing basketball at The Columbus Gym. Wilber ended up spraining an ankle, Brian and Tom helped him out to the street where they hailed a taxi to take them back to their dorm at Columbia University.
"Very good guys. There's nothing more that can be done today so go ahead and get out of here,"
