Uber Driver C-1
Loren rushes to get her things ready, her Uber driver will be there very soon.
"Hurry Loren, you're going to miss Derek if you don't hurry." Mel yells.
"I'm ready; can't wait to see him, he always makes my day!" Loren adds.
Loren's phone beeps, the Uber driver has arrived. "He's here! See you later Mel."
Loren runs out of the front door, Mel peeks out of the window. "There goes a woman in love."
"Good Morning, Derek." Loren is always happy to see him. He nods and semi smiles. "Morning, Loren."
Loren is a pharmacist at Lucas Memorial Hospital. That's where Derek the Uber driver drops her off every morning. He stops the car once he enters the driveway that leads to the main entrance of the hospital.
"Thank you Derek, have a great day."
He nods again. "You too, Loren."
Later that evening,
"I don't understand why you don't tell Derek how you feel." Mel wonders.
"We've never had a conversation, all he does is nod, and good morning, maybe I can take the initiative and invite him for coffee one of these mornings."
"Maybe he's too shy, bet he likes you too." Mel smirks.
"I don't know, it's hard to read him, if he likes me, he'd say something, this has been going on for almost 4 months, maybe he isn't interested." Loren sighs.
"That's why you have to take the first step." Mel adds.
"I don't want to come across as a desperate woman." Loren sighs.
"You aren't desperate; promise me you'll talk to him tomorrow." Mel narrows her eyes on Loren.
"Stop giving me the look, I will talk to him tomorrow." Loren states, maybe Mel is right, she will try in the morning.
The following morning,
Loren is ready to go, she looks at her watch, Derek will be here any minute, she goes over and over in her head how to start the conversation with him.
Mel stands by the door. "He's here, promise me you'll share every detail."
Loren semi smiles. "Yes, I will tell you all about it."
Loren steps out of her apartment, Derek stops in front of her home, a sudden screech stops Loren from going down the stairs, a speeding car rams into Derek's car from behind.
His car flies into several parked cars, Loren looks at Mel who's standing by the window. "Call 911!"
The ambulance arrives along with the fire department. They spend over an hour trying to get Derek out of his car, he's unconscious, Loren is mortified, almost 2 hours later, he's free from the wreckage and placed in a gurney. One of the paramedics stops and looks at Loren and Mel.
"Are you related to him?"
Mel jumps off of the stairs and points to Loren. "She's his fiancé."
Loren's eyes widen. "Mel, what are you doing?"
The paramedic looks at Loren. "Come on lady, you can ride with him to the hospital."
Loren jumps into the ambulance and they head to the hospital. Upon arrival, several Doctors and nurses are waiting for Derek to arrive, one of the paramedics tells one of the Doctors that Loren is his fiancé.
He looks at Loren. "I'm doctor Morris." He extends his hand towards her. Loren semi smiles. "Nice to meet you, I'm Loren Tate."
He responds. "Please wait here."
Loren is mortified, she isn't his fiancé, why would Mel say that?
Within the hour, a young man and an older woman walk into the emergency area, he talks to the receptionist, she points to where Loren is sitting.
Eddie looks towards Loren. "Who is she? I am here for my cousin, Derek Duran, we were told he was in an accident."
"Your cousin's fiancé is sitting over there." The woman points towards Loren once again. Loren wonders why that guy and the older woman are looking her way.
Eddie heads towards her followed by the older woman. "You're my cousin's fiancé?"
Loren semi smiles. "I'm Loren Tate."
At the moment, the Doctor rushes out of Derek's examination room. He stops by Loren. "Your fiancé is in critical condition; we need to operate; is his family here?"
Eddie jumps in before Loren can speak. "I'm his cousin, Eddie Duran, this is my nana, Lois."
The Dr. looks at Eddie. "Your cousin is very critical; we need to operate! We will know more after surgery."
A Police officer stops by Eddie's side. "Are you Derek Duran's family?"
Eddie nods. "Yes, he's my cousin."
"Your cousin's car was hit very hard from behind, his vehicle was pushed into several other automobiles, he was crushed between all of the wreckage, we are still investigating." The officer states.
Eddie sighs. "Thanks Officer."
Several hours later, the Dr. steps out of the OR. He stops when he sees Eddie and his grandmother waiting in the same spot.
"We've placed your cousin in a medically induced coma, we need to alleviate the swelling in his brain, he will be in the ICU for a while." Dr. states.
"When can we see him?" Eddie questions.
While the Dr. talks to Eddie, Nana Lois looks at Loren. "You are a beautiful young lady, I am happy my Grandson is finally settling down, my name is Lois and this is my Grandson, Eddie. When did you get engaged?"
Loren doesn't know how to respond. Nana holds her chest; Eddie helps her to sit. "You have to calm down Nana, don't forget you have a weak heart."
"I know." She looks at Loren. "I'm feeling much better after meeting Derek's beautiful fiancé."
Loren semi smiles, this lovely old lady has a heart condition, how can she tell her there's been a misunderstanding.
The Dr. walks away, Eddie looks at Loren. "Was he with you when this happened?"
"He brings me to this hospital every day, I work here." She sighs.
"We had no idea he was seeing anyone, let alone engaged, he never mentioned you." Eddie says.
Loren sighs, now what, Nana looks at her. "Leave her alone, maybe he was going to surprise us with this beautiful young lady, we know he drives park time as an Uber driver, is that how you met?"
Loren sighs again. "Yes, that's how we met." She stands up. "I have to get to work, I'm a pharmacist in this Hospital, I will check on Derek later, excuse me."
Nana Lois stops her. "It was nice meeting you." She hugs Loren. "My heart is content."
"Yes, nice meeting you too." She semi smiles at them and walks away. Eddie looks at his Grandmother.
"This is crazy; how can he be engaged? He's never mentioned this woman?"
Grandma Lois smiles. "Like I said, I am sure he wanted to surprise us, I like her."
Eddie rolls his eyes. "Of course you do Nana, you like every young lady we come across."
She looks at him. "I never liked your ex-girlfriend, Amanda, I am so happy you're no longer seeing her, maybe you can meet a nice girl like Derek's fiancé."
A few hours later, Derek is out of surgery, the Surgeon signals Eddie to follow him. They walk into Derek's room, he's on a ventilator, and several machines are attached to his body with meds, Lois hugs Eddie.
"My poor Derek, he's very swollen." She holds her chest. Eddie helps her to sit. "Calm down Nana, he's going to be fine." Eddie takes the seat by his bed.
An hour later, a nurse walks into his room to check his vitals, she looks at Eddie and Nana. "He will remain in the ICU for a few weeks, you can talk to him, he can hear you."
Eddie nods, he looks at Derek. "We're here cuz, get better."
A few Hours later, Loren walks into the room. She sees Eddie. "Excuse me, how is he?"
Eddie looks at her. "He's very critical."
"I'm sorry, I have to get going, can I get you or your Grandmother something to eat?"
"It's not necessary, my mother took Nana home, I'll eat something later, I'm staying with him tonight."
"I'll stop by before work in the morning, here's my number if you or your family needs anything." She hands him a piece of paper with her cell number on it.
Eddie takes it and looks at her. "Thanks."
She walks out and heads home. Mel is ready to serve dinner when Loren walks in. "I made some enchiladas, how is Derek?"
Loren sighs. "He's critical, I am going to kill you, why did you say I was his fiancé?"
"Sorry, you've been enamored of Derek since day one, thought I'd help you."
"You didn't help at all; why would you say fiancé? His cousin and Grandmother were there, she has a heart condition, I was going to tell them it was a misunderstanding, I was afraid she'd faint, or worse, die! I am in big trouble thanks to you Melissa Sanders!" Loren states loudly.
Mel looks at her. "Yikes! Full name!"
"His cousin Eddie isn't convinced we're engaged! How do I get out of this?"
Mel bites her lower lip. "I was trying to help."
"You were no help at all, when Derek recovers he will tell them I an Uber customer, I'm in a huge mess thanks to you!"
"Don't get ahead of yourself! Let's wait until he's fully recovered, then we will find a way out of this."
"We! You mean you!" Mel sighs, now what? They sit down to eat, Loren is quiet during dinner, how will she get out of this mess created by her bestie, Mel?
