Heavenly
Chapter II
A Frenzying Thirst
AN: Hi all! Here is the next chapter. There is kind of a POV switch here even though it's in 3rd person. Hope it's OK. Thank you to wtfjamie for the favourite! Hope you enjoy.
"Why did you move away?" the voice asked unexpectedly. Liam shuddered in shock and quickly spun around as he always did when someone frightened him. The guy that had spoke was one of the Cullens that had been in his class earlier. He was extraordinarily pale, had short, sharp brown hair and an unescapable piercing stare that Liam didn't know how to react to.
"W-what?" was all he could manage in his fear.
"Earlier. Before class, you moved away from the table I was sat at after that girl talked to you. Why?" the Cullen wondered. Liam was stunned that he had seen that happen, after all, the Cullens hadn't arrived at the lesson until much later, which begged the question why if they – well, at least one of them – were already present. Before Liam could propose that thought, though, the other man answered him, as if he knew what he was gonna say. "Those doors have a glass panel in them, didn't you notice? I was outside and I saw you leave that table. Why?" he said once more, almost robotic in fashion.
Amidst his surprise, Liam was able to utter a reply. "I… well, I was told that was your table, and I didn't know I was sat in your place, so I didn't wanna make things awkward if you came in and saw me there…" he rambled nervously.
"You were told we were 'weird', weren't you?" the pale man guessed, and looked at Liam dubiously. Liam couldn't tell, but he thought he may have seen a slight grin on the man's face when he made that remark.
"I-no, they didn't say that, they just-" Liam began, but he was cut off.
"It's fine. People here always said that about us when we were back here for high school, it doesn't shock me at all that they're saying it now," the other man interrupted.
"We?" Liam said.
"My family. The Cullens. I'm Edward," the man replied sternly.
"Nice to meet you, Edward. I'm Liam," he told him, questioning whether to put his hand out to shake. When he had introduced himself to Summer they had shaken hands as she herself had initiated it. But Edward didn't seem to want to do that.
"Nice to meet you, Liam," Edward responded. Liam spotted something strange about the man's eyes – they were almost golden in colour; he had seen very bright hazel eyes before, but never this intense shade. In all honesty, eye colour wasn't something Liam noticed about a person often, however this was so unusual that he had picked up on it almost immediately. "Just for future reference, if anybody else tells you that you have to move or do something as to not ruffle our feathers, you don't have to," he added.
"Thanks. Duly noted," Liam accepted with a small nod. The gap of silence between the two was a little awkward, but they broke through it when Edward abruptly ended the conversation.
"Well, then. I'll see you tomorrow, Liam," he said, giving another subtle smile.
"See you," Liam waved casually, trying not to smirk himself. Liam knew he was a disaster around attractive guys – he always tried but was typically unsuccessful at hiding his feelings in front of them, as he would usually let an anxious smile break out across his face. Edward's grin disappeared as he turned around and marched off into the distance confidently to a group of people – from what Liam could see, it was the other Cullens he was approaching. They started talking amongst one another, and one of them, a girl with short dark hair, began giggling a little and playfully punched Edward's shoulder. Her eyes shot to Liam, who was still standing stationary and almost staring at them. She muttered something to Edward, and he cocked his head back a little, meeting Liam's eyes, catching that he was watching them. 'Oh sh*t. Well done, Liam, you've done it again,' he thought to himself upon getting busted peering into people's business once more. Liam swiftly dodged his glance by whipping his phone out of his pocket, pretending he had gotten a text, attempting to fake a reaction to it as if it was some sort of serious news. Without looking back, Liam charged off on his way home for the day.
"So, do you like this Liam guy?" Alice asked teasingly.
"Alice, please stop, I've only just met him," Edward begged, growing increasingly annoyed by his sister's friendly taunting. Alice was one of the only people that knew Edward was bisexual - he had chosen to tell her because the levels of trust between the pair had always been high. He had also revealed this fact to some others he was close to, however, like Carlisle and Esme; but they didn't find more opportunity to tease him as a result, unlike Alice. She had been upset by his divorce from Bella – in truth, that was an understatement; she'd been devastated by it (a stark contrast to Rosalie's reaction). Over time though, they had all healed, and Alice was now often making jokey quips at Edward about any attractive new girls he'd been talking to. When he confided that he also liked men, she'd seen the chance to tease him even more by teasing him about his interactions with other guys now. It could get incredibly irritating, and it would normally embarrass Edward beyond belief. The worst part was that he couldn't even do the same back to her, as her relationship with Jasper was getting stronger every day. He thought he'd always have that with Bella. But unfortunately, trouble had struck one day; his refusal to change Bella into a vampire had nearly torn them apart completely. He had hated the idea of Bella becoming a vampire for many reasons, however mostly it was just for her own safety. It would've destroyed Bella's life. She wouldn't have been able to even leave the house on a sunny day (even if they were extremely rare in this town); and her thoughts would've been overridden by a frenzying thirst for blood. Learning to control that impulse took a lot of time, and that was what he was most afraid of – if Bella was unable to do so, she'd have ended up killing an innocent person, and then… well, the worst thing imaginable for Edward could've become true. So, whilst the divorce was painful, it wouldn't have been as painful as a life where Bella was dead.
He snapped his mind out of a longing for his past with Bella, and back into the here and now with Alice.
"You may have only just met him, but you think he's cute, I can tell," Alice remarked.
"Hey! You can't read minds, you know? That's my party trick," Ed jibed. He could tell exactly where this was about to go, though.
"Aha! That means you were thinking that he was cute though, doesn't it?" his sister said smugly.
"Somehow, I guessed you were gonna say that…" Ed fibbed. He read that next, Alice was going to sarcastically laugh.
"Ha-ha," she seethed, unamused, and proving her brother right. She was right, however; Edward had found Liam, admittedly, very cute. Whilst Ed had been reading Liam's mind, however, he'd heard how nervous he was at meeting such a 'hot' guy, as Liam's internal monologue had put it, which made him a little happy as it seemed the feeling was shared.
After Alice tried to wind Ed up a bit more, they had finally arrived home, where thankfully, she had to shut up as their other 'siblings' didn't know about Ed's sexuality. Speaking of, Rosealie, Jasper and Emmett had arrived home before them in Rosealie's BMW M3.
"Aww," Alice sighed as she knew she couldn't pull her brother's leg about Liam anymore, but Edward grinned in relief at this.
"Man, you guys are slow as f*ck," Emmett jeered as Alice and Edward strode through the house's door.
"Oh I am sorry we don't feel the need to drive like a maniac everywhere," Alice replied, before moving to Jasper and giving him a passionate kiss on the lips. She caressed his blonde hair with a gentle hand as he put his arm around her tightly.
"Can you guys keep it in your pants, please?" Rosealie snapped, rolling her eyes at the couple's unashamed PDA.
"Now, now, Rose. There's no need to be like that," Esme told her as she emerged from upstairs.
"Where's Carlisle?" Ed asked, ignoring the previous situation.
"He's had to take an emergency shift at the hospital. He said he wouldn't be long, though," Esme informed. Edward nodded slightly.
"Alright," he said simply, and then he notified the others that he was going up to his room, before running up the stairs to do so. He didn't really know what to do with himself for the rest of the night. Studying, maybe? No. He knew most of, if not all the stuff that was coming in tomorrow's lecture. He'd learnt about Psychology many times before now; the classes this year would provide nothing new. He wasn't thirsty, either so there was no need to go hunting. There was a blaringly obvious sexual option that dominated his mind; however, he wasn't fond of doing… that. He never used to have to pleasure himself when Bella was there – but now, he was alone, and he didn't like to. So, he withstood his lustful urges, and instead did the least sexy thing he could think of, playing video games. Edward hadn't used to be one for video games, but since Bella left, Emmett had introduced him to them as a method of trying to cheer him up, and now Ed had almost become addicted. He decided to invite Emmett to play as well; seeing his brother rage and throw a temper tantrum at computer games would always be a great turn off. After a little time of pondering which game to start up, Ed settled on Star Wars Battlefront 2, and played it for several hours with Emmett.
"Emmett, you've been up here for 3 hours, if not more. And I want cuddles," Rosealie complained, barging into Ed's room.
"Yeah, yeah, just a second, babe," Emmett complied absentmindedly. "What? How the f*ck did he get me? This WiFi's so f*cking laggy!" Emmett shouted frustratedly, slamming the controller onto Edward's bed which the pair were loafing on. His brother just chuckled. Yes, Edward had a bed now – he had purchased it after the divorce, not for actually sleeping in, but just for when he needed to lie down and be alone with his thoughts, which was a lot nowadays. "Alright, bro, I'd better go. This has been fun, though. See ya later," Emmett said, lifting himself off and slowly creeping towards Rosealie, leaving Ed solo once more. It was just him and a bunch of on-screen pixelated clone troopers for the rest of the night.
Much later, around 2.a.m., Edward was sprawled out across his bed, his mind racing with thoughts. Memories of the past with Bella, ideas about the present, and visions of the future. This was another thing Ed seriously envied humans for – they could just go to sleep, and at least leave their problems behind for the night. Vampires, on the other hand, had to sit with, and cope twenty-four seven with their issues. They had no choice. He'd heard Bella was with Mike Newton, now, and truthfully, he hoped she was doing well with him. At first when he found this out he'd been predictably jealous. But as time had gone by, he recognised that it was probably for the best – he didn't own Bella, she could do what she wanted, and most of all, Bella was with a human, a human he knew loved her, and would more than likely do anything he could to make her happy. Ed was lonely, though. He questioned whether he should get into another relationship – and maybe with another vampire this time. At least the same problems that occurred with Bella couldn't occur if that was the case. But he didn't want to force it, either; he believed love was something that happened to you, not something that you made happen. 'Gah, what am I thinking?!' Ed said to himself. This was so unlike him; before Bella there had been no one. Now he so withdrawn that he was immensely struggling get love off his brain.
Another long gap of time passed, possibly an hour, maybe two, and Edward was still frozen on his bed, deep in thought. He imagined being romantically involved with many different people he knew, and thought were attractive, querying if any of them, or indeed anyone, could make him happy once more; he even wondered if he should give Tanya a call, after all, she had expressed her interest in him years ago. He decided against the suggestion, however. His mind had drifted to Liam, who he had met earlier. Edward couldn't stop thinking about what he had heard in Liam's head – how attractive the man had thought the vampire was. Coincidentally, Edward felt that Liam was quite cute, although as he'd mentioned to Alice, he'd only met him for the first time not one day ago. He didn't know much about him. But did it matter? Besides, he didn't think anything could replace the hole in his non-beating heart…
AN: Sorry it ended on a bit of a sad note, but hope you enjoyed.
