It has been around 2 years since the great war broke out in the continent of Telsis, where the Galdrik Empire and its alliance finally invaded Leidenschaftlich. At this time, Euler earned himself a doctorate degree and marked all-time record of having multiple doctorate degrees at the age of 14. His advisor called him mad for applying for medicine, kinesiology, physics, and biology almost simultaneously. Yet thanks to his genetically mutated brain that stretched across his spine, writing a profound thesis was hardly a problem.

Now Euler has kept a relatively low profile in his career by limiting his thesis to making impressive medical devices that could detect illnesses more effectively or making some discovery in cellular biology. But he took a first step in fulfilling his master's dream of achieving breakthroughs with ease. He contacted a local metal production company named Rory's Metal that was humble in size and asked for their collaboration with a bold promise of guaranteed success in his product.

On the day of his presentation, people who attended chatted with one another about an odd location they were in. Some doubted if they were at the right address, some remarked on the strangeness of demonstrating medical breakthrough inside a metal production facility, and others remarked on the machinery they've never seen before.

Euler came into the scene and began. "Welcome everyone. Thank you for coming to my demonstration today of giving a prosthetic limb to a patient with a severed limb. Rest assured, all the agreements, contracts, and liability have been taken care of and the veteran, who has lost his right leg to a mine in a recent battle, has given us full consent to this demonstration."

A man beside Euler also spoke. "Name's Rory Stevenson, and I run Rory's Metal shop. Dr. Pierce has provided us with these awesome metalwork devices and machines in return for helping him with this demonstration. Not only does this help make something as complicated as a prosthetic limb, but they open many more potentials for metal products that wasn't possible to be made by hand.

"Unless my eyes are tricking me, we certainly aren't in a surgery room with a trained medical staff, Euler- I mean, Dr. Pierce. Are you sure about this?" Dr. Madison spoke, a close associate with Dr. Han.

"We are indeed in the right place. In fact, I designed this prosthetic limb so that a well-trained metalworkers can pull it off as well. No medical training is necessary."

"Hmph." Dr. Han crossed his arms. "I assume you know the consequences should you fail this experiment, or even worse, put that veteran at a greater harm. I pray that you're not getting ahead of yourself, as much of a genius as you are. Medicine is not for a show, you know."

"I am well aware. However, I assure you that this experiment will end in a success, Dr. Han." Giving a sigh as the only response, Dr. Han stayed silent while giving a disapproving look against Rory. Euler then turned to Rory and began. "Initiate the measurement of the severed limb's surface please, Mr. Stevenson." Rory then measured the width, length, and the circumference of the veteran's severed part. "This will help us build the prosthetic nerve receptor that will be attached to the end of his severed leg. It is sensitive to electric signals coming from his nerves."

Then Euler said to other workers. "Prepare the synthetic muscle material and metal layers for the leg. Assemble it as you've practiced." As the workers were getting to work, Euler took out a sample of synthetic muscle for the audience to see. "I've made this synthetic muscle myself. Just like a muscle can contract or relax by the signals from nerves, these also can perform contraction to produce kinetic energy. The prosthetic nerve receptor will connect the patient's muscle to this synthetic muscle. When the nerve sends signal to contract, the patient's muscle will use its strength to also contract the synthetic muscle with it."

After some time passed with Euler receiving and answering questions, the metalworkers were finished making the prosthetic leg for the veteran, designed to fit his severed part like a matching puzzle piece. "Now, I'll leave the final step of attaching the limb to you, Mr. Stevenson." Euler said, giving him a signal inhibitor.

"You're really leaving the very important step to an untrained staff? How reckless!" Dr. Grant spoke, who was another close associate of Dr. Han.

"Hold your horses. Apparently, this hot-shot made this step so easy that even a dud like me can do it." Rory responded, to which baffled Dr. Grant. "Alright, brace yourself. I'm gonna connect this, and it'll hurt." The veteran nodded, and the limb connected. Then a signal inhibitor was removed slowly so that nervous signals could be transferred to the prosthetic limb.

As the veteran's prosthetic leg trembled, the audience began to murmur out of excitement. Then the veteran made some effort to stand up on his legs. Though he had a hard time balancing himself, his face told that he was overcome with joy.

"How're you feeling?" Rory asked.

"It's…It's a miracle. I can walk on two legs again! With time, I can help my wife, play with my children, get a job…If this is a dream, I don't want to wake up."

"Damn straight, we actually pulled it off! Looks like your big-talk wasn't for nothing, Dr. Pierce!" Rory exclaimed. Then it was followed by loud applause from the audience. They then came closer to the veteran to get a close look at his prosthetic leg, filled with awe.

Dr. Rush, who accepted thesis proposals, slowly clapped his hand. "I thought you were crazy when you pushed me to put this experiment a priority over other thesis. It almost makes it feel worth it to go through that trouble…Almost."

"I suppose, I have to thank you for this, right Dr. Han?" Euler said.

"You are correct, but that's assuming you're being sincere."

"Hey, at least try to pretend to be happy with everyone else, Dr. Pierce! You just did something incredible yet you're still wearing that blank face. Loosen up a bit, will ya?" Rory said.

While the audience was busy near the veteran, the three professors, Dr. Han, Madison, and Grant, instead were staring at each other with fearful expressions.

"What just happened? A kid, no less, has just made something that should've taken centuries to invent, and all on first try too! Ugh, and what does that make us then?" Dr. Madison said.

"This unschooled worker now puts himself on same eye level as me from doing such simplistic task. At this rate, all will lose respect for medical professionals for all rigor and hard-work they endured!" Dr. Grant said.

After a distasteful look against Euler, Dr. Han also spoke. "He's privileged. Yes, he's just privileged. If it weren't for that strange brain he had, I wouldn't have to hear him utter his words as if they were absolute truths with no fear of being disproven."

Dr. Madison gave his attention to Dr. Han's comment. "…Yes, that's what it is…He's just privileged. He didn't have to work for any of these."

"And yet, look how they are admiring him as if medicine makes a miracle look easy. What are we to do?" Dr. Grant asked.

As a result of the success of the prosthetic limb experiment, not only the Rory's Metal business has flourished, but the Leidenschaftlich army has now contracted with the shop and Euler to have a more sustainable army where the problem of missing limb from injury was no longer an issue. From this, Euler obtained a large amount of wealth from shared revenue from Rory's Metal as well as being paid to give various seminars and lectures. In contrast, the Galdrik Empire and its alliance struggled to keep its army sustained, and with the disappearance of its supposed apex soldier, Devouring One, the war ended after two years.

After half a month, at Leiden university, Euler was called to see someone that was earnestly looking for him. Upon seeing, it was none other than Alexei himself.

"Master…" Euler said.

Without delay, Alexei ran and hugged him. "Oh, Euler! Thank god you're safe and grown up! I've been thinking about you for so long, and now this is the happiest moment in my life!"

"Great to see you too, master. I've been fulfilling my purpose as you've so desired. And, thank you for all you did for me in the past…"

"Euler, I'm so proud! So proud of what you've endured and accomplished!"

The two moved to Euler's house, and Alexei could hardly believe his eyes of how Euler's social interaction became more natural compared to when he was only obsessed with corrections. They've talked for a long time, catching up with each other about the events that had happened since the last time they saw each other.

"The authority rushed us to deploy the Devouring One as the Great War started four years, because we were running out of time. But upon sending her to clear forces on an island, they reported that she disappeared after a great storm destroyed the navy battle ships, and me and Gerald were exiled out of Galdarik Empire for our utter failure to preserve the empire's trump card. We settled in a neighboring country Enclume and waited for the war to be over."

"How did you know that I made those prosthetic limbs, let alone know that I survived?" asked Euler.

"I may be a genetic expert, but replicating a functioning limb is not something humanity can do at this moment for a century or two. So when I heard about this breakthrough from Leidenschaftlich, I had faith that it was you. After the tension of war settled, I went and searched for you, and here you are now…"

"I see. You came looking for me that earnestly that you tried even when you weren't sure…In that case, would you like to see some of my ideas for my next breakthroughs for the humanity? I can read you the documentation and prototypes now."

Upon hearing that, Alexei had some concern. The implication of why his master looked for him earnestly was to check on his breakthrough and not anything else was a valid concern. Now that Alexei thought about it, there were very little changes in Euler's expressions and tones, which explained to Alexei why this reunion didn't feel as happy as he hoped for.

However, he didn't want to be distracted from the excitement of seeing his dream in action and seeing that Euler was eager to present his work, Alexei responded. "Yes, Euler. I'm quite excited to see them." Suddenly, Alexei threw some coughs.

"Are you sick, master? Shall I do a medical check on you?"

"I-I'll be fine, Euler. Don't you worry about me." From that point, both lost track of time indulging in potential breakthrough ideas, such as making of a semiconductor to control electric flow to maneuver machines like human maneuvers body through nerve, and public release of radio system.

A few months have passed since Alexei was reunited with Euler. For Gerald however, he has been staying in the country of Enclume making a living as a factory worker. From the broken sense of pride as a massive failure to his motherland, he didn't interact much aside from letter exchange with Alexei. At this time, holding a bottle of alcohol, he opened a letter from Alexei.

Dear Gerald,

I hope you're staying strong despite your guilt from failing our motherland. I ask you to stop the implication of ending your own life, even for the sake of your old friend. I always say, there's always a second chance even when falling to a bottom and be assured that I have let go and forgave you for all the troubles we've gone through.

Enough of the solemn topic though. I got to visit Euler's personal workshop located on a quiet plain, west of the major Leiden city that he built out of his wealth. I can't describe with words how marvelous his machines and devices were that seemed as if magic could happen with them. Here, he makes his breakthroughs happen as he was born for, and manages to make me more astonished and proud every day. He never makes the existence of his workshop public though, so as a friend, I ask and trust that you'll keep this a secret between us.

You also wouldn't believe that our supposedly lost Devouring One is actually alive and has saved the lives of people on a train from the bombs of an anti-peace group, and she's an auto-memory doll! Her name is Violet Evergarden now, and you should've seen how much Euler was interested in her physique. With our second soldier alive, I suppose you can put yourself at least a little bit at ease knowing she's living a fruitful life. Color me impressed though, of how close Euler was when he hypothesized where her strength and energy came from!

I hope that you'll learn to rejoice now. Though our journey has not been easy, we've achieved what we aimed for two decades ago; the path for endless breakthrough to move humanity faster than ever. When we meet again, I wish to see you smiling instead of frowning, because I have many reasons to thank you for that has happened.

Alexei Magellan.

Upon finishing reading, Gerald slammed his bottle, almost breaking it. "You fool, Alexei! Now you aren't even telling if you've started guiding Euler a life outside of breakthroughs! See how he's getting closer to realizing a terrifying power of the Devouring One!" He looked out a window that was toward the direction of the Leidenschaftlich. "When we lost the Devouring One, it was you who speculated that she followed the enemy's commander from us conditioning her too much to follow orders…Aren't you even a little afraid of the potential consequences of Euler being conditioned to perform breakthroughs all the time?! If something goes wrong, Alexei, I fear the disaster will be unfathomably greater than our mistake with the Devouring One…"

With that, he grabbed a pen and wrote a lengthy letter to Alexei, emphasizing again and again to be reminded of their mistake with the Devouring One and to not repeat such mistake with Euler.

One day, Euler was alone at his house, and it was late. He was expecting Alexei to come back from grocery shopping at this time, but he wasn't coming back. He then decided to go out to the usual grocery store that his master went to. Upon arriving, he got unsettled by dry blood marks on a roadside. Euler went up to the store owner and asked. "Sir, do you know a man named Alexei Magellan? He usually wears glasses and a curly brown hair and buys quite a lot of food."

"Oh, kid." The owner said. "I'm very sorry to tell you this, but that man you just described, he suddenly was coughing up blood badly. He's at the Leiden university hospital."

With surge of fear and anxiety, Euler rushed to the hospital without a delay. He arrived to the bed where Alexei was lying down.

"Master!" Euler said.

"Oh, Euler, I'm very sorry that you see me like this now. I didn't expect it to come hit me this soon." Alexei said.

"What happened? Was it the coughs you were having? Why didn't you take it seriously and ordered me to ignore it?"

"I…I've been smoking for some time now. When we were training the Devouring One, her immense strength made it quite difficult to restrain her and we had to resort to forceful discipline. I was so stressed about the potential consequence of cruel discipline method that I resorted to smoking to ease my worries…"

"Ah, it was you Euler. I wondered who it could've been when a nurse reported someone frantically running in a hallway." It was Egon, who came to check up on Alexei.

"Father, why do you think master has done such unhealthy act upon himself? It doesn't make any sense to me. He should've known it was harmful!" Euler said.

"I've met quite a deal of patients who refuse to change their habits, mostly out of assumptions that their body can tolerate such bad habits. It seems your master couldn't quit smoking after whatever stress he was under before."

"What's your diagnosis? Is he going to be okay?"

"Coughing up blood frantically was not a good sign, and so we did an X-ray check-up. It turns out that he has gotten throat cancer from all the smoking he did. I'm…I'm sorry to say Euler, but the cancer seems to have started to spread to other organs. As of now, that is near guaranteed death sentence."

"Euler…This is all my fault…If only I wasn't so greedy to spend more time with you, I could've spared you this sorrow."

Euler was standing staring at his master, panting and trembling from the intense rush of emotions he hasn't experienced for a while. When Egon asked if Euler was okay, he noticed something. For a long time, Euler's eyes were stagnant for the sake of suppressing his intense rush of emotion, but this time, his eyes showed genuine fear, concern, and tears for his master.

"Father," Euler said in a serious tone. "Show me my master's medical records."

"You've…never shown this side of yours before. Your tone seldom changes-"

"I don't care whether my emotions are unchecked! I must see if I can save my master!"

"R-Right!" Rushing to his office, Egon shuffled through a drawer and found medical documentation for Alexei so far.

Euler took one glance at the documentation and immediately gave it back. His eyes immediately became hopeful. "I think my master's body can take it. He can still be saved. But there's little time…I need the fastest and most keen typewriter in this country."

"I know someone who you can hire."
