Beep. Beep. Beep.
Lucy heard the timer on her phone go off and felt as if her entire life was going in slow motion. Those three minutes felt like an eternity. She looked over at her best friend and shook her head. She didn't have the courage to look down at the object of her insecurity.
"Jackson, I can't look." She felt bile crawling up her esophagus, threatening to come out, as the thought of the possibilities started to play through her mind like a motion picture. Tears started to form before she even looked at the result. A part of her knew the answer. She didn't need the test, but she wanted it. She wanted it to prove her wrong.
"Lucy, I'm here. You don't have to do this alone," Jackson stated. He grabbed her hand with his and squeezed it. He was offering whatever assurance he could.
"You know. If I am pregnant. I am blaming you."
"Me?"
"I wanted to stay in and watch a movie. You are the one who talked me into going out. If I didn't go out I wouldn't have met him, and if I wouldn't have met him I wouldn't be in the position I am in now." Lucy stated. She wasn't truly blaming Jackson, she knew he knew that, but it still felt good to put the blame on somebody.
"We can't stand here waiting all day Lucy. What does it say?" Lucy closed her eyes and took in a deep breath.
"Can you look?" Lucy asked.
"You want me to touch the stick you peed on. Pass."
"I didn't pee on the entire stick. Just the part that is covered up by the cap. You are safe to touch it." Jackson turned up his nose and looked at his best friend. In his mind he thought about how lucky she is he would do anything for her.
"You are so lucky to have me as your best friend." Lucy gave him a small wavering smile.
"I know."
Jackson turned his attention back over to the object in question. He took in a deep breath before pinching the plastic test in-between his pointer finger and his thumb. He held it as far out from him as he could before flipping it to see the result.
"You are taking forever. What does it say?" Lucy asked.
"Lucy, I'm so sorry. It says you are pregnant." Lucy squeezed her eyes tighter, sent up a little prayer, and held her breath for a moment. "What about now? Any change?"
"Nope, it's still the digital world pregnant on the test." Lucy groaned and took the test from her friend. She released his hand before making her way to her bed. She tossed her self backwards and let her hands fall to her side.
"How could I let this happen? What am I going to do now? We are literally starting at the Mid Wilshire police precinct tomorrow. What am I supposed to do?"
"Come clean. You can postpone your rookie year," Lucy looked over to her friend and shook her head.
"I'm not doing that. I don't even know if I am going to keep this baby. I'm not putting my career at risk." Lucy stated.
"Lucy, you and I both know you are keeping that baby. If you can't even eat meat there is no way you are going to terminate your own baby."
"I know. You're right." She took in a deep breath. "Jackson, I need you to keep this a secret for me. No one can know."
"Lucy," he began.
"It's not your secret to tell. It's mine." He nodded. He felt uncomfortable with her decision, but he knew she would eventually come to make the right choice. As of now she wasn't thinking clearly.
"Are you going to tell the father?" Lucy let out a small snort before getting quiet.
"No. I don't know his name. I didn't get his phone number. He could literally be anywhere in the world right now. The chances of me seeing him again are slim to none."
"Well, you've got me." Lucy nodded.
"That's good. I really need you."
"Are you scared for tomorrow?" Jackson asked.
"Yes and no. I'm more excited than anything. I can't wait to prove my parents wrong. Are you scared?" Jackson shook his head.
"No." He gave her a weak smile before peeling himself off of her bed.
"It's getting late. We have an early morning tomorrow." Lucy nodded.
"Thank you, Jackson. For everything."
