2 days have passed since Euler discovered the existence of cancer. Violet Evergarden meanwhile, has been continuing her usual routine of leaving her own home for work to the CH Postal company. Her acquiring her own home was thanks to Claudia Hodgin's persistent request to Dietfried to reward Violet for doing a valiant work that has saved the continent from another potential war, and Dietfried finally granted his request. Though it was quite a humble house, Violet was quite thankful for such a place to live.
As she was walking towards her work, she greeted her usual neighbors with a smile. "Good morning, Tom. How's your recent carpentry project coming up?"
"Good morning, Violet. I'm having a great start thanks to your help carrying those planks the other day. I appreciate you helping this old bone out."
"Don't mention it, always a pleasure."
Violet then passed by another of her neighbors. "Oh, hello Violet. Looks like you're fully accustomed to this new style of life now." Her children, Tim and Matt came running out of the door upon hearing Violet's name.
"Hey Violet! We thought a new game idea!" Tim said.
"You get to play as Captain Evergarden of the Smith pirates, but instead of metal hook, you have your metal arms!" Matt said.
"Oh, boys, is Violet just a playmate to you? Show her a little more respect than that."
"Oh, it's quite alright, Madeline. Seeing them happy is enough to make me smile."
"Yeah! You're awesome, Violet!" "That's why you're our favorite!"
Madeline shook her head, though with a smile. "If they end up spoiled, Violet, I'm coming after you."
With a laugh, Violet said goodbye to them, and continued on her way. As she walked further, she encountered a young man who was getting ready to leave for his work.
"Morning Violet! I see you're wearing a new dress today! Looks great on you! Good to see you finally changing it up from the usual one."
"Thanks for the compliment, Henry. My colleagues actually picked this for me when we were shopping, because I had no idea what to buy. How's Mr. Stevenson?"
"Oh, dad's very excited to expand the shop's size with all the banger sells we made! We'll be hiring new workers and Rory's Metal will be going stronger than ever! You were collaborating with Mrs. Rhodanthe at Auto Memories Doll Training School the other day, right? How did that go?"
"I've enjoyed it very much. It was a pleasure to teach and guide the new young girls. In fact, I consider it an honor that Mrs. Rhodanthe would let me teach with her when she saw me failing to grasp the basic of human feelings in the past."
"Good to hear that your side of industry is growing too. Alright, see you later!"
Violet arrived at the CH Postal company. She greeted her co-workers as usual and sat down at her desk to do her usual routine of a ghostwriter for any visiting clients. Thanks to her valiant act of saving the peace conference, she became well known in Leidenschaftlich and boosted the reputation of the CH Postal company. Some clients even just came to see Violet in person, and wanted her autograph, which sadly got denied every time.
When there were no clients present, Iris asked Violet a question. "Hey Violet, do you have any favorite food?"
"I don't think I have a specific food I like. I've been trained to survive with little food, so I'm not so sure."
"Well, when we get a chance, why don't we visit a restaurant? There's some good food that you really have to try. You know, to catch up on stuff you've been missing out on."
"I look forward to that then. Thanks Iris."
Just then, Claudia came into their office, with a letter in his hand. "Hello, Violet. Have you been doing well?"
"Great, Mr. Hodgins. With a new home, I met a few good people. I once again thank you for such generosity."
"Glad to hear. I'm here because this client has made quite…an arduous request to commission you, Violet. Normally, I wouldn't accept such ridiculous commission, but knowing you, Violet, I thought I should give you a choice."
Violet received the letter and read the commission details. The requester's name was Dr. Euler Pierce. The task given was to write a formatted thesis paper on behalf of him about radiation therapy to treat cancer even at its spreading stage. She will be given a day to familiarize herself with the format, then she will start working to finish the paper in 3 days. The pay was quite a large sum too.
"What is a thesis paper, Mr. Hodgins? I never wrote something like that before."
"I think it's basically a highly intellectual paper to be approved by other elite intellectuals to proceed with a study. Violet, I've seen one of those before and I was overwhelmed by all the technical jargons and sentences. Even with your writing skills, I'm not sure if you'll manage to stomach such task. Huh, I know Dr. Pierce has contributed much to our military with prosthetic limbs, but he's just asking too much here."
Just then, it caught Violet's eye of why Euler commissioned this with urgency. His master was diagnosed with throat cancer, and time was short to save his life. The thesis had to be approved as soon as possible so that the radiation therapy can be carried out in the Leiden university hospital. The cancer has started to spread, and every day, the master became closer to death.
Violet glanced down at her brooch, imagining Gilbert. "If I could save Major from death, I would too do everything to save him." She thought. Then Violet got up and responded. "I'm accepting this commission. If the master that they dearly love is close to death but can be saved, then I want to help them."
Claudia nodded. "I figured you'd say that. Still, I want you to be aware that this impossibly demanding task comes from Dr. Euler Pierce, who has a frighteningly high intellect and puts his objective first without concern for others. Should you fail to keep up with him, Violet, please do not beat yourself up about it."
"If I fail, it will mean I've failed to keep his master alive. It would be as if I failed to save Major from death. When I write this, 'thesis' of his, I carry his feelings and determination to save his master. That has always been the principle of the Doll, Mr. Hodgins, and I will carry it out."
"I see. Then I wish you all the luck in the world with him, Violet. For no task of the doll has ever been this daunting before as this commission from Dr. Euler Pierce."
The next day, Violet departed to go to Euler's house. After going through some public transport, she arrived at the door of the house. She glanced at her prosthetic arms, and then to the house. It was noted by Henry that Euler was the one who invented the prosthetic limbs that changed many lives with severed limbs. Violet had in her mind a special introduction just for him.
She knocked on the door. Then she was greeted by a very young man who was no more than few years older than her. Putting the surprise of his age aside, Violet gave her usual doll introduction: "It is a pleasure to meet you. I will travel anywhere to meet your request. Auto Memory Doll…Violet Evergarden at your service."
"You may call me, Euler. Thank you for accepting my commission."
"I would like to give special thanks for making prosthetic limbs that made my life possible again after losing my arms, sir. However difficult the task, I shall see it done as my thanks to you."
"…Come in. Let's begin." As Euler turned around, Violet saw a metallic augment that covered the area of his spinal cord, including back of his neck. Curiosity mixed with some concern filled her, but Euler gave her no time to dwell on such curiosity. "First phase: You'll read and familiarize yourself with the format of a thesis. Here's a sample thesis paper I wrote a while ago. You don't need to understand the content; that's not part of your objective."
Upon reading the sample, what concerned Violet more than a complicated text were special texts that were bigger than the rest, thicker, or underlined. Any mathematical equation that came up was also an alien language to her. She glanced at her suitcase containing her typewriter and was already at a loss of how she could reproduce such paper.
"I've…never seen this type of writing before…But I'll try to reproduce something like this now." When Violet opened her suitcase and took out her typewriter, Euler motioned her to stop.
"You're not using that typewriter for this job." Euler put a rather peculiar looking typewriter on a table. "I made this typewriter prototype to be better than the conventional typewriter to write up my own thesis papers. It has all the necessary features you need to write the special texts for the thesis. The best part is, you can reset your progress if you make a mistake."
Violet hovered her fingers over the typewriter, and felt as if she went back to when she first learned to use typewriter after seeing new buttons like "Tab", "Enter", as well as signs like "+", and even arrow keys. She typed her first words and found it strange that ink was applied on a solid surface rather than a paper. "Where's a paper for this, Euler?"
"It will apply the ink to the paper below once we hit the "Commit" button."
"This typewriter is quite…fascinating. If you told us that you'll generously provide means to complete this task in the letter, Mr. Hodgins wouldn't have been as concerned."
"Not something he needed to know." To such an indifferent response, Violet lost her words to speak. "Let's get back on track then. Replicate the first page of this sample thesis."
The "training" session has gone on and Violet managed to pass such training by the late night. Though none of it was physically demanding, Violet felt quite tired and slumped to her bed. "I feel no emotion from him at all." Violet said to herself. "It feels as if he's only interested in progressing the objective at his own pace that I have trouble keeping up. How I feel doesn't concern him. He cares not for human emotion, But what about that heartfelt devotion to his dying master? Where does that come from?"
The next morning, two got into a car with supplies to drive to Euler's workshop located in a relatively empty plain. During that time, Euler answered Violet's questions regarding him, such as his back augments, the need for large amount of food, his need to suppress his emotion, and so on. From those answers, Violet felt like she was getting closer to answering why Euler was the way he is.
They arrived at Euler's workshop, which was somewhat hidden behind vegetations. "Keep the location of this workshop confidential. I don't need thieves trying to break in to get a hand on these devices." Euler said. Upon entering, Violet was in awe of all the machines and devices that she had never seen before. It was tempting to pause and get a closer look at such machines, but now was not the time.
Euler sat down on his worktable, while Violet was ready with the typewriter. "I'll be making and calibrating the delicate part of the radiation therapy machine. I can speak the parts that you need to write for the thesis, and you'll type them out."
As Euler was taking out the equipment and safety wear he needed, Violet spoke. "Euler, I ask you to keep distractions at minimal to ensure that quality of work-"
"I don't give a damn about whatever policy you have!" Sudden raise of voice startled Violet. "If we don't do it like this, master may die from cancer cells destroying his organs before I can apply the radiation therapy. My brain is capable of multi-tasking like this, so it's none of your concern. Now, are you ready to start?"
This was the first emotion Violet had seen out of Euler after a series of monotone and indifferent voices he gave. In her mind, she now figured out what was going on. "Yes, I'm ready."
"Abstract: Current conventional method treatment of cancer is only limited to early discovery of symptoms of cancer and removing cancer cells through surgery. This therapy aims to treat cancer cells when cancer cells start spreading to other organs…" Throughout the morning, they rigorously worked.
