Violet's successful return from Euler's commission was relieving news to Claudia, and it astonished him all the more when he learned that Euler has gifted her his approval reference as well as his prototype typewriter. Because of such achievement of receiving approval from the renowned intellectual as well as enduring the impossibly demanding work, Claudia insisted that Violet take a day off her work to release the stress that might have built up on her.
"I'm…I'm so sorry, Tom…It seems I couldn't control my strength and…"
"Ah, no, it's alright Violet. I uh, just made this face because I never seen anyone hit the nail so hard that it slightly fractured the wood and completely deforming the nail head."
"I'll remove the nail and get a new one now."
"You know what? Why don't you go enjoy your day-off, Violet? It doesn't feel right to make you sweat again after that Dr. Pierce kiddo probably fried your brain. Don't worry, this is something the old bone can handle alone."
"Alright, make sure to not push yourself too much. Bye Tom." As Violet was outside the front gate, Tom's mailbox caught her eye. Two unique hand-palm paints were present, with Tom's name, and a feminine name. "Uh, I'm curious, Tom. Do you live with anyone else? I haven't seen them if you do."
Tom paused his work. "Hm…I'm sorry, Violet. I don't think I want to answer that now. Maybe next time…"
"Oh, I see. Then, have a good day."
Violet tried to take a walk around the neighborhood to spend her time. However, being not used to the notion of not having to work, she started to crave some work to do again. She blanked out when she tried to think of something "fun", as others would say, then she went to Madeline house.
"Your work went okay with that boy, Violet? I hope he didn't give you too much cold shoulders." Madeline said as she was pruning the bushes in her garden.
"I succeeded, Madeline." Violet said as she was removing weeds. "It may be true that he's unapproachable at first, but I was happy to help him save his dying master who he loves dearly."
"Oh, is that so? I wish the best for his master then. But him, loving someone? The sun may rise from east tomorrow."
"It may be hard to believe, but he's capable of expressing emotions. Similar to me, due to circumstances, he just can't express them freely. But, I believe in him to be able to comprehend and care for other's emotions like I did. There were surprisingly a lot of similarities between my past self, and him."
"Huh, never thought that boy could care about anything but his breakthroughs, or whatever. I guess we'll have to hope that he grows to where you are now."
"Hey Violet! Let's play that pirate game we talked about!" Tim said.
"Pay them no mind, Violet. At this rate, they may think all guests are toys they could play with. Hm, Violet, can I borrow the trowel from you for a moment?...Violet?" When she turned around, her children were already teaching Violet some pirate slang like "Aargh", and putting on her head their paper cut-out of pirate hat. "Of course…"
Meanwhile, Euler was at Dr. Rush's office who was accepting applications for thesis paper, who was once his advisor for Ph. D in the past. "Why the rush? You're panting for air, not to mention you barged in here as soon as I let you in."
"Apologies for the sudden visit, Dr. Rush. But I need approval for my latest thesis paper, here. Would you be able to get this in, please?"
"Huh, 'please' is the word I never heard from you, Euler. You up to something?"
"My master's cancer has entered a spreading stage, and I devised a new diagnosis of radiation therapy to treat the cancer. I sincerely ask you to take it, Dr. Rush, he's someone important to me."
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Conventional view is that cancer in spreading stage is nearly impossible to cure. Here you are now, proposing a radical therapy method…This radiation, is not something I'm thinking of, right?"
"Be assured, that it's not. The details are on the paper. Like always, all the devices, materials, machineries and procedure are ready. All it needs, is an approval."
"Yes, I figured so. Still, I have other thesis papers submitted to me that the peer-reviewers must go through. I tell you again, and again, that putting aside all other papers for yours, is a big thing to ask of me. How long do I have to put up with you pushing your own objective on to me, Euler? Because one day, I may grow tired of it and refuse."
Upon hearing that, a moment of fear of rejection stroke Euler. He then considered Dr. Rush's word of how Euler had pushed him to put his thesis on priority with a bribe of delivering guaranteed breakthrough.
"Love, or any human feeling, is not something you can dismiss as granted. It's the most important aspect of humanity that you must understand." Euler recalled the words of Violet. Though he still didn't comprehend it completely, he started to see the merits behind her statement. Euler felt the pressure from Dr. Rush, who was pushing his frustration on Euler that could lead to rejection of his thesis; for the first time, he sympathized with Dr. Rush, and did not wish to bribe him with guaranteed breakthrough again.
Euler lowered his head. "You're right, Dr. Rush. For so long, I've pushed you to prioritize my thesis over others with a promise of guaranteed breakthroughs. As I feel the pressure of rejection now, I should've considered the pressure you felt in the past. I'm sorry for all the…ignoring of your feelings and mine."
"Wait, am I hearing this right? You, apologizing? And for neglect of my feeling of all things? Can I be sure that you're being genuine?"
"…Yes. I guess, it's the effect of the fear and sorrow of the thought of losing my master who matters so much to me…I admit, it is out of ordinary for me, but as I worked on this thesis together with a ghostwriter, I started to see that emotions mattered. I feel the pressure of rejection from you, so now I understand the feeling you might have had in the past. Therefore, I won't bribe you again, but I wish to ask if there's another way."
Dr. Rush sat there in silence, not believing his own ears of what he just heard. "For such a long time, I didn't like that any concern for human feeling was void from you, and though you did have beneficial breakthroughs, I took no pleasure in helping you. Yet here you are, suddenly caring about my feelings…Can I trust you on this?"
"Perhaps, my lack of understanding of human emotion, is a basis for doubt for you. I also acknowledge, that I have my master's life at stake as well. I think my father once taught me about an ethic of not being a hypocrite…If what I feel about matters, then I can't pretend your feeling doesn't matter as well. If this becomes success, I will no longer initiate thesis on my own, but with collaboration with others from now on. I only ask that if these are enough of a reason to trust me, you guide me to another way of saving my master."
Dr. Rush was deep in thought. To accept that Euler suddenly cared about feelings at all was hard thing to do. More importantly, though Euler didn't ask to put his thesis above others, it was still quite demanding to ask for another way to put his radical therapy into practice. Yet, someone he loved was in danger of dying, and to deny a possibility of saving a life felt wrong to him. Not to mention that he at least said that he'll sacrifice initiating his own thesis and instead pace with other scientists. If something happened, Dr. Rush could hold Euler onto this word.
"Okay, Euler. But just this once." Dr. Rush finally said. "You better keep your promises, and all you said better be genuine and true. Otherwise, you can forget about getting any help from me in the future."
"Thank you, Dr. Rush. In fact, I neglected to thank you for all times you put with my insistence of pushing my thesis ahead of others. I suppose however, I shouldn't have done that in the beginning."
"Let's see…Given that your master is at the Leiden university hospital now, what we could try is for the doctor to appeal to his autonomy of physician to attempt to get your, um, radiation therapy up to attention of peer-review professors and get their approval. But, the problem is, the doctor that's treating your master has to be able to trust your radical therapy…"
"My father! Dr. Egon Pierce has been treating my master! He knows my capability to succeed in any new experiments. Does that satisfy the condition?"
"He is? That's good news for you then. If he appeals for his autonomy as physician, claiming that he believes the radiation therapy is the best available option to save his life, the hospital will have to let peer-review professors know about this, and try to get their approval. This way, your proposal can be brought to their attention without me having to put your thesis paper up front, not to mention it is potentially faster."
"Then that is what I'll do. Thank you very much for your advice, Dr. Rush. You have been another crucial help for me to save my master. Be assured, I'll keep my promise after all this. Now then, I'll go pick up the radiation therapy machine from the Rory's Metals now, and contact my father."
"…You're welcome, Euler. Huh, never thought the day would come when I would be saying that to you. Oh, before you go, Euler, make sure to consider Dr. Egon Pierce's feeling of uncertainty when you propose your radiation therapy. As you saw it even from me, people may get wrong idea of the radiation you're talking about."
"That's a good point. I'll keep that in mind. Goodbye, Dr. Rush…Have a good day."
"Good luck, Euler. I hope you can save your master."
Meanwhile, Violet was advised by Madeline that if she couldn't think of something to do on her day-off, she pay a visit to someone she knew well. With everyone else at work at this time, Violet took a shot of visiting Mrs. Rhodanthe at the time of her break. Upon arriving, Violet ended up staying to help Mrs. Rhodanthe once again in teaching when she saw some faces of students she recognized.
After the class was dismissed, Violet and Mrs. Rhodanthe were left in the room. "I hope it wasn't too much trouble for me to pay a surprise visit, Mrs. Rhodanthe."
"No need for apology, Violet. You are always a pleasure to work with. Helping someone out willingly even on your free time, is a very respectable, I'll give you that."
"Well, it's just that I'm not used to the idea of having no work as a reward for successfully completing a commission, that's all."
"Yet, that commission was from none other than Dr. Pierce. I don't think an auto-memory doll was ever commissioned to write an intellectual paper, most likely because we are not equipped with either the mind or the tools to write them. Don't underestimate the task you've completed, Violet."
"Thanks for the compliment. I must also say that Dr. Pierce was quite generous in providing me with his own prototype typewriter designed to write thesis paper. I don't have it with me now, but it was fascinating."
After Violet described all the features of Euler's typewriter, Mrs. Rhodanthe nodded with an intrigued look. "How interesting…To think such typewriter existed to compose a complex texts and symbols. But it is hardly suitable for teaching novice dolls. It is also important to be disciplined and educated to have proper spelling and grammar as a doll. I wonder if this typewriter's ability to correct your mistake could undermine such principle for a doll…"
"Hm, I always thought this typewriter would be beneficial upgrade for us, though your perspective has some valid points too, Mrs. Rhodanthe."
"I don't mean to say that this new typewriter has no benefit at all though. It's just that the typewriter we've used ever since the formation of auto-memory has served us well that we never felt a need to upgrade it. Hm, I wonder what Mrs. Davis' view on this will be like."
"Excuse me, but who's Mrs. Davis?"
"Ah, young dolls like you probably have not heard of her, but she is renowned to be a founder of an auto-memory dolls in Leidenschaftlich. Before the war, the job of an auto-memory doll was low in demand, but she continued to work hard to foster this industry for women. She received the recognition she deserved after the war enlightened the public of the usefulness of auto-memory doll. In fact, it was she who taught and graduated me as an auto-memory doll."
"That's fascinating to hear, and she sounds like a great person too. I suppose I have her to thank for what I enjoy doing."
"Some young girls may not like my strict attitude when I teach them, but this is the way Mrs. Davis taught me when we had to be outstanding in our job considering the demand for an auto-memory doll was low at my time. Even when the job outlook for an auto-memory doll is decent, I wish for these young dolls to have the same rigor and discipline to respect the efforts of Mrs. Davis for this industry."
"But, you're also patient and faithful as well, Mrs. Rhodanthe. If it wasn't for your guidance when I couldn't even comprehend human emotions, I wouldn't be where I am now in life. Though I thanked you countless times before, I express my gratitude to you once more, Mrs. Rhodanthe."
"Always my pleasure, Violet. Now, it is getting late. Why don't you go home now and spend the rest of your day as you see fit?"
"See you again then, Mrs. Rhodanthe. Have a good evening."
"And remember, you're always welcome to visit."
