The next day, Violet visited Claudia's office early in the morning. "Good morning, Violet, you're quite early today. Was there something you needed?" Claudia asked.
"I want to apologize, Mr. Hodgins."
"What for?"
"I may have done wrong to one of my clients for reaching out to him outside my commission. All I wanted to do, was to comfort and encourage him when he lost his master, and yet…"
"Slow down, Violet. Explain to me the situation from the beginning, please." Violet then told him about how Euler was slandered by other medical intellectuals regarding his radical radiation therapy, resulting in his image getting ruined. Afterwards, Violet wrote a letter of encouragement, for she understood that he must be going through unthinkable sorrow. She told Euler how she got herself back together despite hearing about major's supposed death. Violet speculated that Euler then made improved typewriter to thank her, yet the tragedy repeated.
"…Then I spoke with Mrs. Rhodanthe, and she advised to not let myself be caught up with Euler anymore…It feels wrong to do so, yet my thoughts are leading towards to admit she's right…"
"I see…"
"To think that I've made things worse for the one I care about when I meant for the opposite…I don't know what to feel Mr. Hodgins. I've vowed to not take another life, yet the possibility of me ruining a life of other-"
"Please don't think like that!" Hodgins interrupted. "You treat as if you were the one who ruined Euler's life, yet the ones who did all the ruining were other people that directly opposed him. That's the fact, isn't it?"
"Yes…"
"Nobody, not even you, nor Euler, nor anyone else would've seen this coming. Don't feel as if you have to take all responsibility for yourself, Violet. I know you are very capable, but everyone has limits in their power. It is enough that you were trying to help Euler, now don't take the sins of those who ruined Euler's reputation onto you. You did all you can, Violet. I know you enough to have a good intention."
"…I think you're right, Mr. Hodgins. Perhaps I was so concerned about helping Euler that I lost sight of clear thinking. I admit though, that my heart is still feeling guilty despite you are making more sense than me…"
"I know what you mean by that. It's good that you're thinking of others, but it's okay to stand up for yourself as well. As you learn to do that, I'm sure you can judge better for yourself in these situations."
"Thank you for your insight, Mr. Hodgins. Can I ask one more question?"
"Sure."
"Mrs. Rhodanthe advised me to not get caught up with Euler anymore…Do you think the same?"
"Hm…In my honest thoughts, the events with Euler does lean me towards letting him go. But I don't really have the courage to tell you to let him go though. Since it doesn't seem to hinder your work, I suppose I can leave it up to you. However, do you think you can continue to endure the burden, Violet? If this is emotionally unbearable, I won't blame you for letting Euler go."
"No, it's okay. If I have the resolve to keep searching for a major, then I can shoulder the burden of keeping in touch with Euler as well. I promise to be responsible, and thank you very much for your guidance, even if I've said that I no longer need orders."
"It's my pleasure, Violet. There's always something to learn in life even if you don't need 'orders', me included. Now, why don't you go get ready, it's time to open."
"Right, of course. See you later, Mr. Hodgins."
At the evening, Euler came back from his workshop, where he made his device that would take his own blood, mutate them into the variant blood cell that he named "deviant blood cells", then put them in his body again.
"Such deviant blood cell, is what I suspected to be a secret behind Violet's exceptional energy efficiency in her metabolism." Euler said to himself. "This blood cell is similar to a red blood cell where it takes carbon dioxide waste product, but it fuses this carbon dioxide with water to create glucose, a basic sugar structure that a human body uses for energy. Such glucose will then be stored in liver or muscle. Master was quite impressive to achieve such energy efficiency in human."
When master was mentioned, Euler suddenly remembered the conversation he had with Alexei. There was a time when Euler had shared his future ideas for breakthrough to evolve humans to achieve an immense energy efficiency through such deviant blood cell. Yet instead of amazement, Alexei's expression displayed fear, and he quickly told Euler to skip such idea, without telling why.
"I wonder…Don't mentors usually get excited when their student follows their step? Then why didn't my master react that way?" Euler brainstormed for a short time, but immediately gave up. "Well, that won't matter now that the next step is here." Euler attached the needles from the machine to his arm, one to extract his blood, and one to put his deviant blood cells back into his body. Then he pressed a button to activate the machine.
The whirling sound of a machine could be heard, and the tubes turned red from Euler's blood. Over time, the blood that was darker in color was sent back to Euler's body.
Intense dizziness started to take over Euler, and his vision started to become blurry. "Come on…Just a little longer…Such pain is inevitable…From losing a large amount of blood…!"
But near the finishing process, Euler suddenly had a hard time breathing, and he was greatly alarmed. It was as if he couldn't breathe out air to let in new air. He tried forcing hysteric coughs to try to breath out, and prematurely shut down the device and jumped out of the chair. Beating his chest to desperately let out air, Euler collided with some furniture in his house, until he was outside.
Some bystanders were freaked out, and Euler grabbed on to them, barely speaking words: "Help…me…." With difficulty letting out air from his lungs, he collapsed from lack of new air to inhale, and lost consciousness.
Euler regained consciousness, and he found himself lying down on a hospital bed, with a ventilator on his mouth. It was morning. Before he could recollect his thoughts, he felt something significantly different; his breathing technique was altered. Instead of naturally inhaling and exhaling, he now found himself inhaling, pausing, then his belly contracted to exhale out air, as if it was "pushing" air out of his lungs.
He removed the ventilator himself, and let himself be still for a while. When Euler tried to force the usual breathing technique, he couldn't properly let out the air from his lungs, which made him use his belly to again, "push" air out of lungs. More importantly however, Euler did not feel hungry despite presumably sleeping through the night. For his brain's innate demand for energy usually made him feel very hungry after a night of sleep, but it was different today.
Egon came to check on Euler and saw him about to get out of bed. "Euler! Are you awake?! But what do you think you're doing right now trying to get out of bed without my check-up?" Upon getting closer, Egon was relieved to see that at least, Euler seemed to be in good condition. "But at least, I'm so glad to see that you're okay…I almost lost my composure when I heard you collapsed and couldn't breathe."
"Yes…I do remember that happening. Seems like I'm in a perfect condition now though. If you'll excuse me father, I have no reason to stay here anymore."
"Now hold on just a minute, Euler. I need to hear what has happened prior to your collapsing. Never in my entire life have seen a patient collapse from a breathing problem yet become fine the very next day. Whatever it was, I'd rather that this doesn't happen to you again, Euler. So tell me any relevant details that you have."
Yet Euler knew he couldn't do so. For if he told Egon what he had done to himself, the series of questions that would follow afterwards would lead towards his radical plan of restoring his status to continue breakthroughs for his master. Although Euler didn't understand why, the idea of human performance enhancement was considered controversial as well.
Getting up from the bed, Euler gave a cold reply. "That's none of your business, father. If I think I'm fine, you should know that I'm more likely to be right than you."
Egon froze for a moment from Euler's response. "Did you just say 'none of your business'? I don't care whether you're smart or not, I won't tolerate such audacity from my son to tell me that his health is none of my concern! You know better than that Euler, so why are you being like this today?"
For the first time, Euler felt like he was backing into a corner from the question of others. It began to stir up discomfort in him. "…An anxiety attack, father. You know me, my brain just amplifies emotion to a ridiculous amount…"
"Do you think I'll buy that when I've known you to have trained yourself to suppress your emotion? Not to mention you even have an emotion stabilizer drug with you! You're not leaving this hospital until you tell me what's your deal today!"
"Fine! It was for a breakthrough! My body merely suffered a minor side effect, that's all. That should answer your questions, right?"
"Not being able to breath properly, is not a minor side effect! What is it that you've done to yourself for your breakthrough?!"
Finally, Euler snapped. "This is what I've chosen! After the world convinced itself that I'm somehow a villain, it always rejects anything related to me! Then what purpose do I have left, father? All that is left of me, is to resume my old purpose, for my master, that's what."
"Then what about me? Your mother? We can't watch you do this to yourself if this is how far you're willing to go to resume your old purpose. We don't want to see our child bringing ruin to himself, so please, let us support you Euler! We'll find another way together!"
Without thinking, Euler responded. "A help from a simpleton means nothing to me."
Then there was silence. Euler's response drew in attention from nearby nurses and patients. For a while, Egon said nothing. Then his face was downcast. Upon seeing Egon's expression, Euler's chest ached unexpectedly.
"I see then…" Egon finally said. "So this is what you've decided…"
Euler backed away slowly, for seeing his father at his state brought many kinds of discomfort to him.
"You wound me, Euler. But this wound might as well be fatal to me. I won't stop you from your choice, but just know that I'll be here if you want to come back." Then Egon turned back and resumed his job.
Euler quickly exited the hospital, for the discomfort he felt was unbearable. "What was that feeling? Is it my damn emotion acting up again? If only master mattered to me, and I've firmly decided to go my path, why did I feel such discomfort there?" As Euler walked down further, the memory of his father's sorrow came up again and again. Euler wanted to somehow distract himself from such thoughts.
He happened to walk nearby a flyer within a city. The flyer featured a public seminar, organized by Dr. Han and his associates, including Dr. Rush, to present their latest medical innovations. Euler wondered why all of sudden, they were expanding the invitation of a seminar to the public. But it did give Euler all the critical information and stepping point to initiate his plan.
"I assure you, Leidenschaftlich, the villain you'll face will be very real, and threatening this time." Euler whispered to himself.
