Few days after Dietfried had met with Violet, Euler has exchanged an angry phone call with Mara Davis just before he was about to pick up the metal materials from a retail. After the incident at Rory's Metal, Mara also received much media attention, albeit an unpleasant one after being swarmed with difficult questions.
"How the hell do I answer them now, Mr. Pierce?! I've said that Violet is a disgrace of a doll, yet now she instantly becomes a hero from that! Now they're all pestering me about it!" Mara said.
"Look, give me a break! I've got my own share of difficult questions too! I never could've seen this coming either!" Euler replied.
"That doesn't help me! I thought you were supposed to be a genius with that fancy back augment you got! Now I lost my friend that works in the patent office, and guess what? She lost respect for you too! Do I really have to settle to end my legacy with being wrong about a ghostwriter and looking like an almighty idiot?!"
"We can't do anything about it! I'm not about to waste more of my time arguing with someone that somehow thinks past can be changed!"
"But you were the one who-!"
Euler abruptly ended a call, and this made his day grumpy. For some reason, he also got an ominous feeling that the day was about to get worse. Regardless, Euler wore his hoodie with sunglasses to conceal his identity and got on to his car to pick up the materials he ordered. Almost all of his funds were used up from the transaction, but what Euler planned to do is to upgrade his suit one last time before delivering a final blow to Violet and the military. Then he will get out of the suit, self-destruct the suit, then tell the public that it was him who took out Undying One for good.
Euler had arrived at the retail, and he looked around first before the supplier arrived with the materials. After not seeing any soldier or law enforcer, he proceeded to accept the materials.
However, a pair of soldier spies that Dietfried deployed noticed rather a sizable amount of metal and some other materials being loaded into a hooded man's trunk.
"That's awful lot of metals, don't you think?" a blonde soldier said.
"Yeah, Sir Bougainvillea ordered us to look out for this exactly…Him wearing a hoodie and sunglass doesn't help either…" other soldier said.
"Quickly, grab our motorcycle. We gotta follow him."
After the metals were loaded, Euler requested that the receipt be destroyed, or at least be kept confidential. Then he hastily got into his car and drove to his workshop. Two soldiers with their sidecar attached to a motorcycle, also stealthily followed Euler, with one soldier keeping an eye on the car. At first, Euler suspected nothing when driving in an urban area, but as he was driving out in an open area, he was bothered by the motorcycle that seemed to be subtly following him. He eventually turned to where his workshop led to, and upon checking the rear mirror, the motorcycle seemed to stop following him.
The soldier on a sidecar was observing Euler's car with his binoculars from afar. "Yes, he seems to be headed in the direction of the supposed coordinates of Undying One's hideout."
"Is that so? Then I'll follow him again. From this point, he shouldn't be suspecting us following him anymore." The soldier performed a U-turn, then followed the path that Euler took before.
As Euler entered a forest, he saw that in the distance, his workshop looked a little different than usual. When he got closer, his heart sank upon seeing the front gate open, and that part of the workshop had been burned down.
Euler bolted down from his vehicle. "No…" He ran right in front of the workshop. "No! Who did this?! Nobody should know where this place is!" From the looks of it, the fire had been extinguished by rain midway, yet the damage was still significant. Euler ran inside the workshop to see how much damage was done.
Over half of the materials as well as machinery and tools were no longer usable, and the ones that survived still had some burn marks on them. Shaking in fear and shock, Euler earnestly looked at the condition of the suit. To his relief, the suit still stood there. Though much of the metal plating has melted off, the suit's backside, which provided the power source for immense strength and the signals to the synthetic muscle, seemed undamaged.
His relief however did not last, and he thought of who could've possibly leaked the location of his workshop, and why. "Was it Violet? No, I never demanded her this location as Undying One, and if she knew already, I'd be all over the news…Then did that damn Bougainvillea somehow track this down? But how? I don't understand, and I hate it!" Then he remembered the suspicious feeling of two men that seemed to follow him. Paranoia overtook him, and he started to put on his suit.
Meanwhile, the two soldiers arrived some distance away from Euler's workshop. With binoculars, they found the burnt up wooden building of some sort. A blond soldier took out his radio communication. "Agent E-10 and E-11 here. We've discovered a wooden cottage of some sort on the exact coordinates sent by an anonymous individual. It is burnt up though. We're approaching it with caution for closer investigation, over."
"I'm not expecting much out of this. What if it's just an ordinary cottage that was caught on fire and abandoned? I doubt Undying One would be that careless about his hideout." commented another soldier.
"Whatever is the case, we'll be able to confirm whether that anonymous individual was telling the truth or not." The two soldiers then slowly approached the workshop, moving from either bushes or trees to use as a cover.
But they heard menacing sounds of metal footsteps as if it was in a hurry. They quickly crouched, and an intimidating metal figure jumped out from the fence. Lucky for them, it seemed to be looking around and didn't know where they were.
"Damn straight." Whispered a blonde soldier. "So, it's true then. This is the Undying One's hideout. I don't know how it's true, but we can't deny it anymore."
"Let's get the hell out of here. The moment he sees us, we're done for." Whispered other soldier. When Undying One started to walk away from them, they slowly backed away towards their motorcycle. But out of the tension, they didn't pay attention to where they were stepping. One of them stepped on a tree branch and made a rather loud snapping noise. Their heart felt as if it stopped when Undying One immediately turned his attention to them.
"Aw, hell! We're dead now!"
"Run, and quickly tell them about this before it's too late!" The two soldiers sprinted and took out their radio communication. "This is Agent E-10! We've confirmed that the coordinates from the anonymous points to the Undying One's hideout! But we've been spotted!" The Undying One slashed one soldier and quickly ended his life. "I repeat! We found Undying One's hideout-!" Then the last soldier's life quickly ended as well with wrist blade piercing his heart.
Undying One rummaged through the soldier's belongings and found their badge that had the Bougainvillea symbol on it. He deduced that these were spies from Dietfried that were deployed ever since the meeting. Undying One returned to the burnt-up workshop, and he took off his helmet.
Euler still couldn't comprehend how someone could burn up this workshop to sabotage him. But whatever the matter was, they knew where his base of operation was, and who knows how much more information they have got? Euler felt the odds were overwhelmingly stacked against him and started to lose faith in his last trump card. This was a very rare moment in his life, that catastrophic failure was looming over him.
He looked at his blood-stained wrist blades, and was suddenly reminded of Dr. Rush's death, his begging voice still loud in his memory. Then he was reminded of Egon's extreme sorrow as he practically cut ties with him, and Euler's heart wrenched. Finally, Violet's crying when he was about to move out, was also replayed in his memory. "The end for the Anointed One is near…I sacrificed much to become the hero as this world demanded to, and then to resume my old purpose of the one I truly cared about!"
Euler looked up at the sky with some resentment. "Yet fate has played with my feelings to trick me into thinking that I was succeeding, only to all fall apart from one fight with commoners and mock me as it proves my worldview wrong! Now no one is left to stand by me, for I threw them away to fulfill my dream, and all is in vain now…"
Euler took his suit off and grabbed his surviving tools. "Even if I run away and pretend nothing happened, my reputation is at the bottom again like that time when I was called a radiation maniac. What can I do at that point to even try to restore my reputation after all my resources have been depleted? Such fate is no different from death to me…Not to mention that they will eventually connect the dots and figure out that I was the Undying One at this point."
The only alternative for him at this point was to try to overcome the odds against him and rise as the final hero that overcame Undying One. Even if he died trying, at least he would die without having to see himself being scorned by the world again. He was a man with nothing to lose at this moment. Euler then began to fix as much of the suit as possible before the final battle.
It was around an hour since the spies reported Undying One's hideout. Violet was at her home, fetching some letters from her mailbox. The matter of her agreement to fight Undying One occupied her mind for quite a while, because when she told her neighbors about it, they were upset to hear it. But after some conversation, they fully gave their support to Violet's decision, though it didn't mean they were less upset about it either.
And they were all upset because they weren't sure if Violet would come back alive. It tempted Violet to promise to herself to come back alive by being successful in this mission. But she knew better to not have such thought after she had a history of being defeated by Undying One. If she couldn't make the future anymore certain, then all she could do was to not lose sight of why she was fighting in the first place.
Violet opened one letter and it read: "Thank you for saving me and my baby that day. You're my hero, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise." – Margaret
She was surprised that the woman reached her address. The letter indicated that recipient was indeed for Violet, but the address was missing. Normally, the letter would be sent back to the sender, but it seems like the colleagues she knew just sent the letter to her address. She opened other letters as well.
"Thank you for your quick thinking and sparing my son the injuries. I consider myself very lucky to have met you." – Dennis
"You've saved my life that day. As far as I can see, you are an exceptional ghostwriter with brave heart, and I don't care if anyone says otherwise." – Connor
"Couldn't thank you enough for getting us out gutter from Undying One. We'd rather have you than some pretenders far away." – Rory's Metal
Violet was touched by the genuine letters. Though she was a doll for a long time, the power that letters with feelings carried always admired her. She held the letters to her chest and forgot about any uncertainties she had; for this was what she was fighting for. Violet noticed one last letter, and it was from Mrs. Rhodanthe. It was quite a while ever since she wrote a letter to Mrs. Rhodanthe, so Violet didn't know what to expect.
But just as she was about to open a letter, her radio communication alerted her. "Violet, we've found Undying One's hideout. Prepare yourself for combat now, and rendezvous at the designated location. You will be loaded into a truck with strike team Alpha. I repeat, we've found Undying One's hideout. Rendezvous at the designated location."
So, the time has finally come. Violet put down the letter, changed into her combat attire, with her battle axe Witchcraft strapped by her back. She put on helmet with flashlight, with the light protection vest. She stepped outside and looked at her neighbors' houses. "Goodbye everyone. It's time for me to go. Whatever happens tonight, know that I'm grateful for everything, and I'll give it my all for you, and the city." Violet then ran to her rendezvous point, bracing herself for the potential final battle.
