Violet woke up and found herself in a hospital bed. As she tried to get herself up, she could feel her front upper torso stinging with pain. Stitches were present on the area that was slashed by Undying One, and Violet saw that her arms were already replaced with new ones. This gave Violet some reminiscence from the Great War, where she woke up after Fort Intense has exploded. Beside her, many flowers and letters were present by a table sent from her neighbors, colleagues and friends.
A nurse who came to check up on Violet saw her trying to reach for the letters. "Oh, you're awake. Sorry, but can you lie down and rest for longer until Dr. Egon Pierce checks on you again? We've just patched up the nasty laceration you got from the battle."
"Thank you very much for all you've done." Violet said as she lied down again. "Send Dr. Egon Pierce my thanks as well. I remember working for him a long time ago.
"It's our pleasure. If time allows, I can read out the letters for you if you want."
"That would be great. Thank you once again."
After some time, Egon arrived at Violet's side. He asked some questions such as if anywhere else was hurt, and her overall conditions. Egon estimated that if no infections or other complications occur, Violet could be released as fast as 3 days, emphasizing to avoid any intense physical activity to speed up the healing. He also commented on Violet's muscle anatomy that was significantly different from normal human's anatomy, observing that it was heavier and denser in mass.
"I hope you understand how lucky you were; a laceration this deep from top to bottom of your torso would've killed you with blood loss without an urgent medical attention. After seeing too many dying soldiers in past, it's good to see a rare case of a survivor of battle."
"But Dr. Pierce," said Violet. "how come you are wearing a sorrowful face if I'm alive now? Is there a bad news for me as well?"
Egon sighed. "It all began when Euler has mutated his blood to reach inhumane energy efficiency…It must have been when he collapsed from breathing problem a long time ago. It broke my heart when it was announced that Euler became Undying One to restore his reputation to a hero, just to indefinitely fulfill his master's old dream…To think my son would go that far to reclaim what he has lost…What's more, he will be executed for his crimes in a month." Egon's eyes became teary. "It's a miracle that I'm still working in this state right now."
"The sorrow must be unimaginable for you…When he revealed himself, I wished to deny the reality myself…"
"If only I was sterner…If only, just, if only I tried a little harder…"
"I remember the story from when I worked for you and wife…I believe you've done all you can, Dr. Pierce…But I understand my light words won't make it easier for you…"
After a day, a nurse read out the letters that Violet received. A heartwarming encouragement, with occasional gifts, helped Violet feel a little better about the tragedy of Undying One's truth. These people and the emotions they carried, was what Violet truly fought for, and she never regretted the pain and trials she was in for them.
"And yet here I am helping this city who got my beloved master killed for their paranoia… while looking after the city who is always willing to forget who I was in the past as they saw fit!" Violet remembered the emotional words of Euler from a radio a long time ago. She then recalled the words of Undying One when he intimately talked with her:
"I once was a man with an ideal like yours, yet the truth of this world changed me to who I am now.
Hold on to that ideal all you want, for it won't change the fact that truth is only what the 'angels' say is truth.
But fear not, Violet. For I shall pay this world back with their own medicine."
Such words were spoken with an intense, authentic feeling that pointed to one man who was scorned by the world and resented it greatly. This was the same man that loved his master dearly, and though lacking in emotion, had a heart that never means malice. Yet overnight, he made a public enemy named Undying One to make himself the hero for freedom to fulfill his master's dream; a continuous breakthrough for humanity. Violet has always assumed love to be virtuous, but she now questioned whether a love could be too intense that it could translate to committing crimes at Euler's scale. She hoped that it wouldn't be the case.
On the day Violet was about to be released, Dietfried paid a visit to Violet. "Well done on that mission, Violet. I must admit, I never faced a battle at a scale like this. But it is undeniable that you were an invaluable asset in our mission, and that perhaps for the first time, I've seen you fight for something rather than a killing machine taking orders."
"Thank you for your kind words, Sir Bougainvillea. Though I must make a confession that at one point, I became bloodthirsty when Undying One threatened to harm the ones I love. It was as if I became inhumane…I pray that in the future, I don't have to fight battles like this; it leaves a sort of regret of who I became amidst the desperation in battle…"
"Well, with that aside, I think it is right to reward you for your unreplaceable participation in that battle. Even if I didn't want to, I know that Claudia would pester me to do so. Anyway, it's your chance to ask for something, and I'll do my best to make it happen."
Violet had been thinking for a while about how one time, Euler had spared her life on her third encounter with him, as well as his insistence that they were fellow victims of the world's scorn. She also remembered that during the final battle, Euler willingly surrendered instead of fighting until his last breath, as if he suddenly broke his usual character of stubbornness that he was right from his superior intellect.
Violet then made up her mind and spoke out. "Please give me a chance to speak with Euler one last time. That is my wish."
Dietfried raised his eyebrow. "You're serious?"
Violet nodded.
"What do you hope to achieve? He murdered many people, destroyed and stole many public properties, threatened the ones you care about, and almost killed you, not to mention that fighting against the military force is akin to committing treason. Even if you somehow redeem him, he won't be saved from execution. Are you sure you can't think of something better?"
"I'm sure of my decision. I know that I can't defend his crimes, but it doesn't mean that he must pass with a bitter heart. The words and his emotions that I heard from him both as Euler and Undying One gives me even a small hope that he can make peace with himself and come to terms with his feelings. If that's not satisfactory to you, at least know that I have lingering questions for him as well."
Dietfried thought for a moment. "By my experience, a man who crossed the line to this extent is usually set in stone in his choices and mindset that any attempts to talk to him will feel like talking to a wall. How confident are you in moving his heart?"
"I confess that I can't promise to be successful, but as someone who works as a ghostwriter who is trained to interpret client's feelings, it's something I wish to take a chance for. Besides, the Euler I knew used to be a friend that could love despite a cold appearance. For his sake, I wish to help him one last time."
Dietfried sighed. "That sounds exactly like what Gilbert would say. I guess it's a given that I can't seem to understand him, or you. Very well then, I'll arrange for you the meeting date before his execution and contact you. Given your achievement, having the meeting approved should be easy enough."
"Thank you very much."
After Violet was released, her neighbors were very eager to welcome her back and got together on the next day for a celebration of Violet winning the battle against Undying One. As conversation exchanged, a topic of Violet's final showdown was naturally brought up. Her near-death experience of being slashed but making a comeback particularly intrigued rough going men like Tom and Rory, while women like Madeline gave them dirty look for commenting how they would've liked to experience such adrenaline rush of victory from that. When Violet voiced about talking with Euler again, this time the men gave some disappointed looks, while the women fully supported her.
Seeing the casual banter between the people who had different reaction to her story, perhaps even some offensive jokes that everyone just laughed it off, reminded Violet that this was exactly what she fought for; the bonds between people that cared for others. For the first time, Violet was proud of herself for being a soldier even just for a moment, this time to defend rather than killing from orders.
