The next day, Violet visited the doll training school that Mrs. Rhodanthe was teaching in. In the past, Violet's ill reputation made her afraid of meeting with her, as she respected the opinion of Mara Davis. All she could muster was a timid letter to Mrs. Rhodanthe with hopes that she would be as gentle as possible. But now that circumstances had changed, Violet looked forward to talking with Mrs. Rhodanthe again in person.
Violet knocked on the door at the hour training was over, and Mrs. Rhodanthe showed delight in seeing Violet again. "Ah, Violet. It has been too long, hasn't it? Come on in."
"Indeed it has. It's great to see you again."
They took a seat by a table. "I've caught up on all the recent events. Is your injury recovering well? I sure hope that you don't put yourself in that situation again." Mrs. Rhodanthe said.
"Thank you for the concern. The doctor said that as long as I refrain from intense physical activity, the laceration should heal overtime. I may not be able to accept long distance commission, but I should be able to work again."
"That's great to hear. Now, I suppose you came to see me again to hear what I have to say about what you did as a doll, hm?"
"Oh, how did you know?"
"I know a shyness that comes from fear of getting into a trouble well. Besides, you wrote your last letter to me about it too. I wrote you back a letter. Did you by any chance read what's in it?"
Violet's face reddened after remembering she put it aside when she was called for a mission. "Oh my, I'm so sorry, Mrs. Rhodanthe! I forgot about the letter after I responded to the military's call…I didn't mean any disrespect after not seeing for such a long time…"
"It's alright actually. My opinion has changed over time after writing that letter anyway. I do remember about my past advice in avoiding emotionally invested in a client. To some extent, I still hold on to that principle, but I'm considering adjusting it after my disappointment with Mrs. Davis."
"I do remember Mrs. Davis' harsh words with Euler Pierce in the past…"
"Precisely. Ever since your victory with Undying One, Mrs. Davis concluded her career with humiliation and the disgrace of a doll industry falling unto her instead of you. I suppose such is the fate of a doll, or even any human being, who only knows of human feelings, but cares not about it. But seeing you and your feats, I could see a new vision forming for the doll industry."
"What 'vision' are you thinking of?"
"A normal doll may not be able to imitate your extraordinary strength or dexterity, but they can imitate your virtue of placing value in human emotion. That is, rather than merely interpreting client's emotion, they are also capable of sympathizing and empathizing with them as a fellow human; thus allowing them to authentically represent client's feeling as if written by a person rather than a doll."
"This, Mrs. Rhodanthe, is the phenomenon of becoming emotionally invested in the past, right? Do you plan on changing it?"
"Not completely, of course. This will require more prudent judgment on doll's part, and making it more difficult to train them as a result. But I believe I must give this approach a try if the doll industry is to stand out and sustained in the future. I thank you for your courage in your belief to allow me to see all of this in a new light. I am most honored to have met you that could influence the doll industry as much as Mrs. Davis in the past."
"You give me too much credit, Mrs. Rhodanthe. It was only thanks to your strict, but fair and patient training that allowed me to comprehend human emotions and get to here. I've only did what I believed was right."
"It means a lot to me in either way. Violet, the way I see it, you are a fully mature doll that no longer requires guidance. I would like to ask you to view me as a friend instead of your mentor. Can you do that for me?"
Violet chuckled a little, for this change in a view felt a little strange but welcome. "I certainly do it, thought it may take some time." From what all started from her wishing to understand what Gilbert meant by "I love you", Violet was grateful in her heart of where her career in ghostwriter led to; it filled the missing elements in her to truly become a person.
After next few days, Violet was informed through phone call that her meeting with Euler has been arranged to Saturday, which gave her a little less than a week to prepare herself. Although Violet had formed some vague plan on how to approach Euler, the lack of information on his past or his master made her unsure about the effectiveness of having Euler come to terms with his bitter feelings. Given how Euler's mindset worked, Violet needed at least some facts for her words to have persuasion to Euler.
Then one day, near a closing hour, one man who looked like he was approaching an elderly age, came to Violet asking her to write a letter. Upon seeing him, Violet felt as if she saw him before with a feeling of déjà vu, with slight sign of fear. Nevertheless, Violet wrote for him a letter. But his letter was very short, relating to apologizing for his past wrongs.
"Um, sir. Are you sure it was necessary for you to come here to write such a short letter? It looks like something you could write with a pen on your own…" Violet asked.
"You are correct. I'm here to finish what remains to be done. Let me ask you; does the name 'Devouring One' sound familiar to you?" The man asked.
Instantly, Violet felt as if she realized something was forgotten, and her memory found itself trying hard to think what was forgotten. "It…It does, sir. I don't know why, but that name is bringing some unknown sadness in me…"
"So, it's you then. The letter I just asked you to write, is for you. The reason for my apology is related to the wrongs I've committed against you and Euler in the past. If you wish to know about it, meet me by the central park when you're done your shift."
As the man got up and was about to leave, Violet asked. "Sir, may I ask who you are?"
"Me? Just an old traitorous soldier with many sins to clean up after." Then the man left the building.
"Violet, you aren't really going to trust him that easily, are you?" Ivy asked beside.
"I appreciate your concern, but I want to take a chance talking with him."
Ivy sighed. "But I don't remember you meeting him before. You what they say about 'stranger danger', don't you?"
"Yet my instincts and feelings tell me to give him a chance. I've gotten an odd sense of familiarity that can't be explained. Besides, if he really does know something about Euler's past, then I need all the help I can get to help Euler come to terms with his bitterness."
"Alright Violet. But I'm coming with you, okay? You're still recovering from that injury you know. If anything happens, I'll be with you."
Violet and Ivy went to the central park, and found the man. Ivy explained why she was with Violet and promised to not intervene too much in the conversation. The man introduced himself as Gerald Starke, telling them that he left his job from Enclume to settle matters with Violet. He told of how Violet and Euler had a same creator named Alexei Magellan, a genetics scientist in the Galdarik Empire. Both were made for war with different genetic mutations to make them apex soldier in one way or another. Euler's brain was mutated to allow him to process information at unmatched speed, while Violet's blood and muscle cells were mutated to give her superior energy efficiency as well as immense strength.
"The commander ordered us to get rid of Anointed One after seeing your potential. He was then forced to flee to Leiden city, separated from Alexei."
"That's horrible…To be separated from one you loved at such young age…" Violet said.
"Indeed. I've greatly wronged my friend for failing to keep his prized creation safe. But it doesn't end there. When we were having trouble making you obey knowing that you were inhumanely strong, the commander ordered us to have it under our authority no matter what. Although Alexei protested, I've taken extreme measure of using force and beating to make you obedient. I didn't want to risk losing another of Alexei's creation after another failure."
Violet simply listened, and all the instincts she had when she was a young soldier started to make sense. It also explained why Gerald gave her fear, presumably from the force he used on her as a child.
"By the time you were given an instinct to obey your superiors, we deployed you on a mission to secure and clear any enemies on an uninhabited island. But a storm that night made us lose contact with you, and by the time we arrived, you were gone. Me and Alexei were banished after that, lamenting to ourselves."
"I…remember now. I've followed Sir Dietfried Bougainvillea that night, as the teaching of obeying your superiors was drilled into my mindset, and he did indeed look like he had high authority. I suppose I wanted to avoid the pain from disobedience so much that I failed to see him as an enemy."
"Alexei hypothesized that as well. Now, my question is, will you accept this old soldier's empty apology for all his sins against you? If you won't, I won't take offense."
The sudden reveal of her past left Violet unsure of what to think. After regretting of how much of a killer she was in the past, she felt some degree of resentment towards Gerald who made her that way. But any hostility was pointless now that so much time has past since the Great War. "Your wrongs against me may be undeniable, but I won't hold it against you now. I've grown to learn, that such act is foolishness."
Gerald simply nodded. "Very well. This old soldier is now done cleaning after the mess he has made, and I thank you for trusting me to do so."
"Wait, so you've come all the way here from Enclume just to apologize to Violet then? It doesn't make sense to me that you'd practically abandoned your job for just that." Ivy commented.
"You're quite keen. I've other important reason to come to Leiden city. A news reached to my area that Undying One spread around a note that Violet was an apex soldier from Galdarik Empire. He probably used Galdarik Empire's past hostility to make the public distrustful of Violet. But only Euler as well as I know about Violet's origin. From then, I figured out the identity of Undying One, and I hastily went to Leiden city and sabotaged his workshop."
"So, you were the anonymous individual who informed us of Undying One's hideout then?" Violet said. "You have my thanks for bravely helping us! I'll go speak good words for you-"
"There's no need, Violet. After all the sins I've committed, I don't want people to think I'm some hero or something; what I did was to merely clean up after the mess I've brought upon. Besides, I don't know how Leidenschaftlich military will think of their past enemy helping them out."
"Oh, I see then. You don't think highly of yourself it seems. It reminds me of myself when I've lost a battle with Undying One…I'm not sure if I'm fine with you doing the same."
"To each their own, I suppose. Anyway, I've finished what I've come here for. If there's nothing else, I shall go and leave you alone."
"Wait! There's something important that I need your help with." Violet said. "Before Euler is executed, I requested to meet and talk to him, to possibly help him come to terms with his feelings and be at peace before dying. But I came to realize that I know too little of his past and his master, Alexei. You said you were close to him, right? Then will you tell me more about the past and their relationship?"
Gerald sat in awe. "You've changed so much from when I last saw you. Last I saw you, no concern nor care for human existed so long as you were ordered to kill. Yet not only you've regained the sense of human emotion, but also go beyond and care for the enemy that tried to kill you. Heh, fate sure has lots of surprises up its sleeve…"
"Will you help her or not?" Ivy asked.
"Of course, I'll help her. It's the least I can do." The rest of the time was spent with Violet inquiring of Euler and Alexei. Gerald emphasized Alexei's special attention for Euler, the impact of Euler's War Tactician phase failure, and him trying to rush Alexei to prepare Euler for life beyond breakthroughs to adapt to normal life, but Alexei neglected his advice because of being too distracted from admiring his creation's achievements.
Afterwards, as Violet organized her thoughts over time, she felt relief and satisfaction as if the last puzzle piece was found and the picture was complete. She felt prepared and confident for the day she would meet Euler.
