"Um, Neptune? I'm not sure about this…this place looks…shady." Nepgear said as she stood at the entrance to the very dark, moist, seedy-looking cavern stretched out before them.
"Come on, Nep Jr. don't be like that." Neptune playfully scolded with her hands on her hips. "We gotta scope this place out to make sure there aren't any overpowered superbosses lurking around in here. Plus! This gives us the excuse to have a sisterly adventure together!"
The girl was still hesitant, but she nodded nonetheless. "Alright, if you think it's alright. And, yeah, you're right…it has been a while." The girl hardened her resolve. "Alright, let's go!"
"That's the spirit!" Neptune cheered then pointed forward to the dungeon entrance. "Onwards! Can't keep the adventure waiting!" The girl ran ahead full speed with boundless energy.
"I can never understand why she has limitless energy for some things and then none for others…" Nepgear said as she followed after her sister.
Their glowing weapons illuminated the cave somewhat, but Nepgear retrieved a flashlight from her pocket and used it to better see the, so far, empty cave.
"So far this dungeon is very lazily designed." Neptune remarked looking around not seeing anything of note so far. "Seriously this is almost as bad as reused assets!" She shouted her voice echoing throughout the dungeon somewhat.
"I'm sure there's more stuff further inside." Nepgear assured her, and case in point, the two stopped as Nepgear shined the flashlight on a large purple door blocking their path. Before Nepgear could open her mouth to ask anything, a loud electronic voice boomed through the small cave.
"PAY CREDITS TO PASS."
"What?! We gotta pay to continue?!" Neptune crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes at the door. "Our series is better than this! We're above in game paywalls!"
"It's fine, we have plenty of credits, let's just do it." Nepgear said as she pulled out a card that held all her credits on it, and walked up to the door. She inserted it into a slot in the door, and on a screen at the front of the door, her balance was displayed. To her shock, the girl watched as half of her credits were taken off, and her card popped back out of the slot. "Wh-what? That much?!" She gasped. Thankfully, the purple door made a whining noise before it slowly lowered, allowing them to continue.
"Don't worry Nep Jr." Neptune patted her sisters back comfortingly. "I'll get the next one. Come on, time to press onwards we won't let some stupid dungeon get the better of us!"
Sadly they only made it a little bit further before they reached another door, same as the last, with the same command.
"PAY CREDITS TO PASS."
"Are…are you sure this dungeon is worth it, Neptune?" Nepgear asked nervously.
"Duh!" Neptune said, going up to the door with her card that held her credits, "Like I said we're not gonna let some stupid dungeon get the better of us, besides it's obvious someone made this dungeon to scam people out of their money. So all we do is beat this dungeon, find the person that made it, and beat them up for it so we can get our credits back. Easy!"
Neptune inserted her card into the slot and watched in horror as the door took more than half of her credits. "WHAT?! I saved up my allowance for a month! Now I can't get the special edition of that new game coming out! That's it! Dungeon maker you are so gonna get it!" Neptune marched onwards more determined than ever to get this dungeon finished.
The two continued onward, only to be met with a third door that issued the same command. "I…have a feeling I'm not gonna have enough money." Nepgear said as she inserted her card, and it emptied whatever else was left, before spitting it back out and they heard the booming voice once more.
"INSUFFICIENT CREDITS."
"Ugh! Stupid paywalls!" Neptune grumbled, marching over to the door and inserted her card as well. "Come on, please be enough." Neptune prayed to herself but she was quickly proven wrong when the machine's voice said back to them.
"INSUFFICIENT CREDITS."
"WHAT?! But that was the rest of all our money!" She started to inspect the machine all over the place. "Does this thing take IOUs?"
As if it heard her, the message on screen changed, and the voice boomed once more.
"ITEMS MAY BE ACCEPTED IN EXCHANGE IF SUFFICIENT CREDITS ARE NOT AVAILABLE."
"WHOA!" Neptune jumped back a bit from the sudden change but regained her composure quickly. "Alright if that's the case then I got plenty of junk in my inventory to pawn off." She starts going through her inventory and starts tossing stuff into the machine. "Junk…junk…junk…junk.." Neptune mindlessly said tossed away the items.
Nepgear did the same and after some time of them throwing out junk, a mechanical arm emerged from the door and scooped up their items, before retreating back into the door. The door whined once again, and it opened, revealing more of the cave to the two. "I hope there aren't many more…" Nepgear said aloud.
"That's gotta be it, no way this place can have anymore doors like that." Neptune assured as they continued onwards for a few minutes and unfortunately for the two CPUs they came across another one of the doors. "Oh come on!! Really?!"
"PAY CREDITS TO PASS. IF CREDITS ARE INSUFFICIENT ITEMS MAY BE ACCEPTED."
"Ugh! Man, I can't believe this! Microtransactions are so annoying. Why do people put up with this stuff!?" Neptune complained as she went through her inventory again. "Oooh…I'm starting to run a bit low and stuff to junk…hmm…I guess I can toss out the least valuable stuff." She went about tossing out all her items yet again.
Unfortunately for the two girls, even after unloading some of their more valuable stuff, it wasn't enough. Nepgear offered to give up her stuff, but even after giving the door everything but the clothes on her back and the sword she held, it still somehow wasn't enough. "Neptune! I really think we should just give up, especially if there's more after this! There's not much more we can give."
"And let this dungeon and whoever runs it get the better of us? No way! I'm gonna show 'em just what a protagonist is made of!"
"Well, I'm out of stuff, so you'll need to offer some of your stuff, too. Or…maybe even all of it."
"Gladly!" Neptune said with determination as she started to completely empty out her inventory. "Come on…please be enough…please be enough..." Luck was thankfully on her side as the mechanical arm came from the door yet again and took their items, then went back into the door where it opened up revealing more of the cave to the duo. "I'm gonna have some serious words with this dungeon maker after I'm done here!"
Hoping that it was the last one, the two advanced once more, only to soon come across yet another door. Nepgear thought for sure this one would be it. "But we have nothing left to give! All of our items are gone! We have nothing!" She cried. Once again, as if hearing them, the message on screen changed again, along with the voice.
"CLOTHES MAY BE SUFFICIENT IN EXCHANGE FOR CREDITS."
Nepgear turned pale. "Okay! Nope! Nope nope nope! Neptune! I say we turn back now and call this a loss, I am NOT giving away my clothes!" She whined as she held her arms to her body tightly.
"Never! Come on Nep Jr., think! We've fought against the Deity of Sin, took down a crazy goddess and defeated a Dark CPU dead set on destroying our dimension! We can't let a stupid dungeon be the thing that makes us turn back and give up! I'd sooner become a background character then let that happen!" Neptune said, grabbing Nepgear's shoulders and shaking her lightly as if it'd knock some sense into her.
"B-but…our clothes…" She whined.
"You're worrying too much Nepgear, if we don't get our clothes back we can always just transform and fly back so we got nothing to worry about" Neptune assured.
"You're…really not gonna give in, are you?"
"Nope!"
"Fine! Then you strip first!"
"Alright…guess that's fair." Neptune unzipped her parka and slid it off and it fell to the ground as her face started to turn a shade of red from the fact she was already half naked. "Here!" She grabbed her parka and threw it to the door. "...Stupid door..." Neptune mumbled under her breath.
Nepgear's face also turned red as she watched her sister strip down, even removing her socks and shoes to present them to the door, which the mechanical arm happily received, yet, of course, it still wasn't enough.
