TW: Mentions of miscarriage
It had been this way for days now. Even before the trip to the Decapolis. Miriam had already been upset for a month, even before her best friend had come home. And when Maya did come home, her pain had been at the exact level as Miriam's and since Hanna and Rebekah had been wrapped up in their own issues and boyfriends, that left just the two of them to be there for each other.
They had told each other everything. Miriam about her mother's miscarriage and her lost sibling that she never got to know. And Maya about how her father had told her grandmother that he was going to die and how he had been arrested. How much it scared her.
After the healings that had taken place two days after everyone's return, both girls had gone to stay with Mary and Tamar at Matthew's old place. Simon had been confused, but Jesus had been even more confused as to why this was happening. The girls had always had such strong bonds with they're fathers but they wanted to be away from them now. It was what the girls wanted and needed to survive at that point. And it was the much better option than running away.
Miriam hadn't wanted to talk to her father at all. He was scaring her more than he normally did and she most often found herself in Nathaniel's arms as he held her tightly. Even at night. Mary had lifted the rules on the girls sleeping with they're beloveds because of the amount of nightmares that they had. Mary knew of the issues that the girls had and so did Tamar, Nathaniel and Matthew. But no one else knew.
Maya on the other hand had tried to at least try and give her and her father's relationship another shot but instead she and Miriam who had come with him for support, found him preaching to a crowd with a Pharisee in front of him. An angry one at that. She had run from the whole situation then, flashbacks running through her head that wouldn't go away until the next day. What she didn't know about was the heartbroken glance her father had given her before he had continued preaching. Simon had also watched his own daughter run away after her best friend and it made him sad as well.
And then Miriam's father had found out about the miscarriage and he had been angrier than he had been before and as a result, she sunk deeper into her depression. He had even been angry at Miriam, which made her more upset.
Maya spent most of her time in her room, staring out the window as she went over all the prayers in her prayer journal that she had written when she was 10-years-old. Remembering when John The Baptist took care of her when no one else would. Telling her stories of her father and how wonderful he would be. How he would save the whole world. She just didn't think that it meant dying.
And then a trip to the Decapolis had been announced and the girls had to go. Rebekah was going as well. Miriam and Maya were not exactly thrilled that they had to do this especially since it was dangerous and that they would have to be around they're fathers more. When they had started out, Maya just stood close to Matthew, holding his hand tightly as they walked together.
Miriam was happy that her father wasn't there and was a little more relaxed, but that didn't last long because just as it seemed they all would perish, her father and John showed up. She may have been mad at him, but she knew he would keep everyone safe. But she moved closer to Nathaniel as he came to stand within the group once more, not looking her father in the eye. Simon took a good look at Miriam. Tired and pale, circles under her eyes from lack of sleep. He wanted nothing more than to hug her tightly, but he was still so angry at everyone.
Maya on the other hand, instinctively moved towards her father. It didn't matter how heartbroken she was, she was still scared that she would lose him at any moment. She instinctively took his hand even though she was trembling and shaking. Jesus looked over at his daughter now. This was the closest she had been to him since Nazareth and he could feel the deep heartbreak, fear and pain from her just by the touch of her hand.
He didn't care how many people were watching, he turned and pulled her into a hug that he was sure she would pull away from, but she didn't. She wrapped her arms around him tightly, placing her cheek on his chest as he smoothed her hair down, kissing her cheek. "We will talk later sweetheart" he whispered softly before pulling away, still holding onto her hand though as he motioned for them all to sit down.
Miriam on the other hand, sat as far away from her father as she possibly could. Rebekah sat next to John, her arms wrapped around his waist as she watched her two best friends. She regretted that she hadn't been there for them more. When she heard about what had happened she was horrified. Miriam had hid this for so long, but she had obviously told Maya and not her or Hanna. And she had no idea how she could help.
The event lasted two days and by the time it was over, the girls were about ready to collapse from exhaustion. John was practically carrying Rebekah now as Simon came back to them now. "We're not walking. We're rowing."
Miriam and Maya ran over to Jesus now, Maya taking her father's hands, pure fear in her eyes. "Abba, let us come with you to pray" she said now, her eyes filling with tears.
Jesus shook his head and wiped away Maya's tears, pulling her into his arms for a few minutes and as he hugged his daughter. Miriam looked back at her own father, who was looking at her with an unreadable expression. Would he ever be her father again?
Jesus pulled back from his hug with his little girl and wiped more tears from her cheeks, kissing her forehead. "I will come back to you Maya. Do you believe me?"
Maya hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Abba..." She took his hand just as he was walking away. "I love you."
Jesus sighed in relief now, pulling her to him tightly once more, kissing her head a couple times. "I love you too Little Lamb."
He kissed her forehead before walking away now. Maya and Miriam made they're way back to the group now. The disciples and Rebekah were looking at them both now, but the girls took they're beloved's hands and walked towards the boat now. Simon looked at his daughter now and sighed. Why was she acting like this? But he already knew the answer.
The storm was raging on and they were all in the middle of the ocean. They were literally fighting for they're lives now and Maya and Miriam were in the middle of the boat, holding onto Nathaniel and Matthew as Rebekah clung to John, who clung onto her as well. And that was when he saw it. A man walking on the water towards them. Most of the men were crying out that it was a ghost, but Maya knew exactly who it was.
"Abba!" she cried out now just as the other men were starting to recognize him as well. Matthew held her tightly, knowing it could potentially be dangerous if she even stood up at that moment.
"If you are who you say you are, command me to come to you!" Simon shouted at Jesus.
Suddenly all of Miriam's anger with her father went away and it was replaced with fear and sadness. "Abba no!" she cried out brokenly as Andrew wrapped an arm around her as well.
Simon stepped out onto the water after a rant to Jesus about how he could abandon him in a time like this. How he could have picked other people over him. But Miriam knew that Jesus wouldn't abandon anyone. And despite the fact that her heart was broken, Maya knew this too.
As Simon walked across the water towards Jesus in the storm, everybody watched in silence. Miriam watched, sniffling a little as she wiped her eyes. Not that it mattered. She couldn't tell the difference between rain and tears at the moment. And then as soon as her father looked away from Jesus, he started to falter and then he completely sank.
"Abba!" she screamed now, Nathaniel holding her tighter now as Andrew stood up, going frantic. Everybody was frantic.
This went on for a few minutes before something else miraculous happened. Jesus pulled Simon out of the water and into a tight embrace, slowly walking them both back towards the boat. Miriam was shaking like a leaf at that point, not knowing whether it was the weather or her fear. She watched tearfully as Jesus sat down in the boat, holding onto her father tightly who was sobbing into Jesus' shoulder.
She had seen her father cry, but not like this. And if he had cried like this, he had hidden it from her. She let go of Nathaniel now and quickly came to her father's side, placing her hand on one of his own now. He always comforted her, so now it was time for her to comfort him. His sobs broke her heart and the words he said broke her even more. "Don't let me go."
Maya let go of Matthew as well, making her way over to her father, sitting down as she leaned her head on his shoulder. Both fathers and daughters needed eachother.
"Peace, be still!" Jesus cried out now, holding up one of his hands. And within seconds, the storm was gone. Replaced with the sunrise.
Everyone was catching they're breath now, grateful to be alive after the storm they had just been through. Miriam stayed right where she was, kneeling beside her father, one of her hands on his still as the tears started flowing down her cheeks.
Maya was crying softly against her father's shoulder, tears flowing down her cheeks finally after weeks of trying to be strong. The other disciples and Rebekah watched heartbroken at the four people that just seemed to be so vulnerable at that moment.
After a few moments, Simon grasped his daughter's hand and sat up, pulling her into his lap as he cried into her hair. "I'm so sorry baby. I'm so sorry!"
He continued to sob now as Miriam hid her face in his neck as she started sobbing as well. Simon knew he had screwed up, treating his daughter the way he had. It was never her fault. Nor had it been Eden's and the only person he had blamed was Jesus. But even now he knew it was no one's fault. These things just happened.
Maya leaned into her father's arms, closing her eyes as the tension left her body now. All Jesus saw now was a tired young girl who had been trying to be strong for too long. He shouldn't have left her alone with her heartbreak for so long. He should have tried harder to get her to talk to him. He sighed and brushed her hair back away from her face as he held her close to him, kissing her head.
"I think it's time you girls come back home" Jesus said now, taking his daughter's face in his hands.
Simon looked over at Jesus and nodded in agreement. "I agree. It's time that you talked to a parent and not you're best friend."
Rebekah spoke up now as John held her to him tightly. "Why didn't you two come to Hanna or I anyway?"
Miriam lifted her head, sniffling a little before speaking. "Because Hanna is dealing with her own issues and you seemed so happy Rebekah. We didn't want to ruin that for you. Maya's and my issues were linked. Death has a huge part in both these issues."
Everyone looked to Jesus now, confused as to what that meant. He sighed sadly and looked into Maya's sad eyes now, placing his forehead on her's. "We can all talk about that later" he said finally, kissing his daughter's nose before pulling her into a tighter hug.
"I have much to say on that matter" he said softly, kissing Maya's head once more.
Miriam sat in the middle of her bed wrapped in a blanket. She had to admit it was good to be home. Around her parents and the familiarity of her room and the rest of the house. Her grandmother had even come to visit her as her parents talked in the next room. The two of them were best friends as well and her grandmother had always loved Miriam's spirit.
"You look like you're mother, but you're just as wild and free as you're Abba" Dasha said as she brushed her granddaughter's hair away from her face now as she sipped on soup that had been made for her.
"I haven't felt like it lately" she said softly, a tear slipping down her cheek now as Dasha wiped it away, taking Miriam's free hand.
"You saw something no teenage girl should ever see. You're mother almost died. You have every right to be traumatized sweet girl."
Miriam nodded and wiped at her eyes more, looking up when she heard a knock on her door. She smiled at her father. The first smile that she had given him since he hurt her. "Can I come in?" he asked gently, earning a nod from his daughter.
Dasha smiled softly and kissed Miriam's head before walking out of the room, leaving father and daughter alone. Simon smiled softly as she set her empty soup bowl on the table next to her bed before snuggling into his arms as he sat down next to her, wiping her hair away from her face.
"Little girl...I cannot even begin with my apology to you. I hurt you badly and I should be shamed as a father for that."
"All I wanted was you. I wanted my Abba and he wasn't there" she whispered shakily as Simon wiped her tears away.
"I know baby" he whispered softly, kissing her forehead. "And I can understand why you ran away. Well not really ran away. But you know what I mean."
She laughed shakily and kissed her father's cheek, burying her face in his neck as he stroked her hair.
"I forgive you Abba" she whispered softly, clutching his free hand gently.
Simon squeezed her hand and placed a gentle kiss on her head. "I made all kinds of promises to you that I've broken over the past couple weeks Miriam. Promises I made to you when you were very young."
"Abba you don't have to make it up to me" Miriam said softly now as she looked up at him.
"I do baby. I do have to make it up to you" he said as he laid back on the bed, pulling her into his chest as if she was still a little girl. To him she still was. Whether she had Nathaniel or not.
"You don't know how lucky I am to have you as my daughter. You are a precious treasure to me. You and you're Eema. And nothing will change that."
He placed a few kisses on her cheek now and pulled her closer. "I love you Miriam."
"I love you too Abba" she whispered into his shoulder.
"Can I join the party?" Eden asked from the doorway smiling. "I've missed my daughter too."
"Come in dear!" Simon exclaimed, squeezing his daughter to him now, kissing her forehead.
Eden grinned and lay on the other side of her daughter, wrapping an arm around her's, kissing her cheek. "I especially have missed you're cheerful face around here. The place was dull without my little Miriam."
"Well I'm back now, so no worries!" she exclaimed now, feeling better than she had felt in days. Things would be better now. She just knew it.
"Miriam I just want you to know that you will always be my little girl" Simon said. "You could marry Nathaniel tomorrow and you would still be my little girl. Always."
"I know that Abba" she said happily, closing her eyes as both of her parents held her close.
The once traumatized girl was now replaced with the Child Of God that everyone knew that she really was.
Maya and her father walked into they're secret apartment, the lost teenager standing by the door while her father grabbed some towels and cleans clothes for the both of them. He placed a dress on a table before starting to dry off her hair, wiping her tears as he did so.
"There. Now you won't catch a cold" he said, kissing her forehead as Maya smiled weakly, grabbing the clean dress as she walked into the other room.
She quickly changed now before curling up on the bed as she gazed out the window, trying to collect her thoughts for a few minutes before that inevitable conversation she would have with her father. Soon enough she heard footsteps behind her. "Maya darling. You know we need to talk"
Maya sniffled a little, wiping away the tears that she didn't know had fallen before sitting up in bed now, turning to face her father who sat down next to her, brushing her damp hair out of her face as she looked up at him. Jesus placed a hand on Maya's cheek gently before pulling her into a tight hug, kissing her cheek mutiple times as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
She cried softly now as he rubbed her back, wondering how this conversation would go. "Maya how did you find out?" he asked her softly.
"I heard you and grandma while I was feeding the sheep."
Jesus nodded and wiped her hair away from her face, taking one of her hands in his. "Little Lamb I know how hard that must have been for you. You should have come to me."
"I know Abba. I know. I just..." She bit her lip. "I was trying to process it. And it was hard to talk when you were so happy with Lazarus and then the service happened..."
Her voice trailed off as she burst into tears, full on sobbing as her father pulled her into his arms once more, rocking her back and forth as she clung to him tightly. "Abba it hurts! The pain is so unbearable!"
Jesus kissed her temple before pulling back to take her face in his hands. "Maya I know how painful it is. It pains me that this will hurt you and you're grandmother. And all you're friends and the disciples."
Maya bit her lip, trying to fight more tears as her father kissed her forehead and pulled her into his lap. "But there is one thing I do not want you to forget through all this Maya" he said taking her face in his hands.
"You are my little girl. Always have and always will be. I will be with you til the very end."
Maya nodded and hugged him tightly once more, hiding her face in his chest. "And you will always be my Abba. Forever."
