The cold air felt refreshing and not stuffy like the ruins' air. It had been a full year since she'd fallen into the Underground, and she'd never been happier. Toriel reluctantly sent her out whenever she pestered enough about exploring beyond the ruins and packed her bag full of snacks—a slice of her favorite pie, and a couple of donuts from the spider bakesale. She was all bundled up and ready to go. So with another deep breath and a look back at the only home she's ever known she took a step out and onto the crisp packed snow that crunched under her feet and started walking towards where her new friends would be. Sans, Papyrus. She stepped over the tree branch and walked up towards the much too big fence.
Sans should be walking up behind her- and oh screw it she was much too excited! She turned around and took his hand, giggling like mad whenever the whoopie cushion in his hand started to deflate.
"Ah! The old whoopie cushion in the hand trick. Gets 'em every time."
They talked for a little while before walking up to that conveniently shaped lamp, which she gladly went over and hid behind just to see what would be different.
"Sup bro?"
"YOU KNOW WHAT 'SUP' BROTHER! IT'S BEEN EIGHT DAYS AND YOU STILL HAVEN'T RECALIBRATED YOUR PUZZLES! YOU JUST HANG AROUND OUTSIDE YOUR STATION. WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING?!"
"Staring at this lamp. It's really cool. Do you wanna look?"
"NO! I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THAT! WHAT IF A HUMAN COMES THROUGH HERE!? I WANT TO BE READY! I WILL BE THE ONE! I MUST BE THE ONE! I WILL CAPTURE A HUMAN! THEN I THE GREAT PAPYRUS WILL GET ALL THE THINGS I UTTERLY DESERVE! RESPECT! RECOGNITION! I WILL FINALLY BE ABLE TO JOIN THE ROYAL GUARD! PEOPLE WILL ASK, TO BE, MY, 'FRIEND'?! I WILL BATHE IN A SHOWER OF KISSES EVERY MORNING!"
"Hmm. maybe this lamp will help you"
"SANS! YOU ARE NOT HELPING! YOU LAZY BONES! ALL YOU DO IS SIT AND BOONDOGGLE! YOU GET LAZIER AND LAZIER EVERY DAY!"
"Hey, take it easy. I've gotten a ton of work done today. A skeleton."
"SANS!"
"Come on, you're smiling."
"I AM AND I HATE IT!" Papyrus stomped his foot and sighed. "WHY DOES SOMEONE AS GREAT AS ME HAVE TO DO SO MUCH JUST TO GET SOME RECOGNITION.."
"Wow, sounds like you're really working yourself… Down to the bone."
"UGH! I WILL ATTEND TO MY PUZZLES! AS FOR YOUR WORK, PUT A LITTLE MORE... 'BACKBONE' INTO IT." Papyrus started laughing as he walked away.
"Ok, you can come out now."
Harriet came out from behind the lamp, giggling at the silliness of the two brothers as she walked up to Sans.
"You oughta get going he might come back and if he does… you'll have to sit through more of my hilarious jokes." He winked as she waved goodbye and started heading towards the town of Snowdin.
Sans spoke up as she passed his sentry station. "Actually, hey. Hate to bother ya, but can you do me a favor? I was thinking… my brother's been kind of down lately. He's never seen a human before, and seeing you might just make his day. Don't worry, he's not dangerous. Even if he tries to be, thanks a million. I'll be up ahead. "
As she passed through the tree line and came to a fork in the road, a little glimmer caught her eye and she turned and looked at the glimmering Star she had seen in the blackness of death. The same star Chara had used. She knelt down and poked it and her heart filled with warmth while remembering the convenience of that lamp. It winked out of existence and she got up from her knees and started to explore, taking the path to her left to see what was there. There was so much she had missed while Chara had been leading her, and she wasn't going to miss a second of it.
At the end of the left path, she found a stream and a fishing pole. When she reeled it in she found a photo of a monster with a note saying "Call me, here's my number!" She decided not to call and cast the line back out before going back down to take the other path. The brothers were up ahead talking about something, so she stopped walking, not wanting to interrupt their conversation, but a bit too close to not hear them.
"SO, AS I WAS SAYING ABOUT UNDYNE.-" and then they noticed her. What followed after that was a comical back-and-forth between them until they were spinning in place. It caused her to giggle
"SANS! OH MY GOD! IS THAT… A HUMAN?"
"Umm…. actually, I think that's a rock."
Harriet wrinkled her nose, they were talking about the rock behind her. Weren't they?
"OH"
"Hey, what's that in front of the rock?"
"OH MY GOD!" Papyrus knelt down and tried to whisper to Sans "(IS… IS THAT A HUMAN?)"
"(yes)" Sans 'whispered' back.
"OH MY GOD! SANS I FINALLY DID IT! UNDYNE WILL.. I'M GONNA… I'LL BE SO… POPULAR! POPULAR! POPULAR!" he took a moment and composed himself. "HUMAN! YOU SHALL NOT PASS THIS AREA, I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS WILL STOP YOU, I WILL THEN CAPTURE YOU! YOU WILL BE DELIVERED TO THE CAPITAL! THEN… THEN! I'M NOT SURE WHAT'S NEXT. IN ANY CASE! CONTINUE ONLY IF YOU DARE! NYEH HEH HEH!" He ran off while laughing. His excitement was contagious and Harriet was looking forward to all the puzzles that Chara made them skip.
"Well, that went well. Don't sweat it, kid, I'll keep an eyesocket out for you." He winked again and walked after his brother.
Up ahead was what looked to be a cardboard box, with some writing on it, so she walked up to check it out. The box read. "YOU OBSERVE THE WELL-CRAFTED SENTRY STATION. WHO COULD HAVE BUILT THIS, YOU PONDER. I BET IT WAS THAT VERY FAMOUS ROYAL GUARDSMAN. (NOTE. NOT YET A VERY FAMOUS ROYAL GUARDSMAN)"
"This must be Papyrus'." She giggled to herself and carried on walking.
On her way, she ran into a few monsters, some with funny hats, some aspiring comedians, and as she walked she came across a sign that said "Absolutely NO moving!"
Her breath caught in her throat as she carefully walked past the Sentry Station, only to stop as Doggo popped up and began to speak. "Did something move? Was it my imagination? I can only see moving things. If something WAS moving, for example, a human. I'll make sure it NEVER moves again!"
Doggo blocks the way.
A blue sword appeared in the doggo's paws and it swiped it at and through Harriet, she froze up but the sword did no damage.
"It moved! It didn't Not Move?" Doggo couldn't seem to find her.
So hesitantly she reached her hand out and pet the dog.
"WHAT? I've been PET!?" Doggo started to bark and lose his mind. Which gave Harriet a chance to creep away silently.
"S-s-something pet me…. S-s-something that isn't m-moving…I-I'm gonna need some dog treats for this…" He sunk back into his sentry station and Harriet took the opportunity to get as far as possible.
Sans was up ahead and he started talking to her. "Hey, here's something important to remember, my brother has a very special attack. If you see a blue attack, don't move and it won't hurt you. Here's an easy way to keep it in mind. Imagine a stop sign, when you see a stop sign, you stop, right? Stop signs are red. So imagine a blue stop sign instead. Simple right? When fighting, think about blue stop signs. Remember... Blue stop signs."
Harriet was very confused, so confused she didn't notice the ice in front of her and went slipping and sliding all the way to the other side of it.
Heyo! I hope everyone has had a wonderful day! I decided to try something a bit different and add a spot of color to the story just like in the in-game dialogue. I just thought it might be a little fun. Let me know what you think, remember to follow, favorite and review!
