The next day came, it was almost time to open the Mystery Shack. Wendy had arrived earlier than usual; she was planning on talking to Mendi before her shift started hoping to create a better relationship with her. Mabel was the only one at the register.
"Hey Wendy. You're early. I thought you didn't come in till noon." Mabel said. Wendy shrugged her shoulders and lied about how she was trying to get more hours for a bigger paycheck before the festival. Wendy looked around, seeing only the faces of customers.
"Where's Mendi?" Wendy asked. Mabel explained how Mendi wanted to know how to give tours, so she spent the morning with Dipper.
"Oh, did she?" Wendy said with some grit in her teeth. Wendy said she was going to find them. Passing through the gift shop, she noticed there were new price tags on almost every piece of merchandise. Wendy did a double take at the new inflated price. She grabbed a snow globe and walked over to Mabel.
"Mabel this snow globe was ten bucks yesterday, when did the price shoot up to one hundred dollars?" Wendy asked. Mabel said it was Soos new plan to put prices up on the items kids usually have their parents buy more. Wendy's brows lowered and asked why Soos would do that. Mabel shrugged her shoulders.
"He said something about it being Mendi's idea." Mabel said. Dipper and Mendi enter the gift shop after a large crowd had walked in. They were both laughing from making jokes about how people looked in the audience. Wendy walked up to them holding the snow globe towards them.
"You want to explain this?" Wendy said aggravated. Mendi looked down at her hand.
"That's a snow globe. When you shake it, glitter swirls around in the water making it lo-"
"I mean the price! Why is it suddenly ten times more expensive?" Mendi grabbed Wendy by the wrist and pulled her into an empty room.
"Keep it down. I don't need people to know we sold these significantly cheaper yesterday. The reason they're pricey now is because I talked Soos into inflating the price to what the parents usually buy their kids."
"Why?"
"Because parents always buy dumb crap for their kids. Sure, they'll never shell out a hundred bucks for a snow globe, but for their kids, that's easy money. Amusement parks do it all the time." Mendi smirked, only making Wendy more annoyed with her reasoning. Wendy shoved the snow globe into Mendi's torso and went back into the gift shop. Wendy pulled out her phone and dialed Soos' number. The phone rang several times then went to voicemail. Wendy tried again multiple times with no success. Wendy continued to try and contact Soos every twenty to thirty minutes, but to no avail. Near the end of the day, two familiar girls walked into the Mystery Shack. Wendy saw Mabel get up from her seat and run over to Candy and Grenda. Grenda looked a bit taller with more noticeable muscle tone. She was wearing a black T-shirt with the letters 'DBC' and grey jeans. Candy was wearing a long black and red stripped shirt, with black pants, and had prescription circular sunglasses on.
"I'm glad you guys could make it!" Mabel said.
"Of course! There's no way I'm missing the biggest festival of the summer! I am so ready to see Death Before Confessions!" Grenda said. The girls chat about how excited they are to see their favorite artist. The two turned to Wendy and said hello.
"Hey guys, almost didn't recognize you with your new brooding outfits." Wendy said.
"Being a teenager has taught me that the world is a horrific place, and that the only answer is angst!" Grenda said.
"I, too, am filled with angst. Except mine is towards verbally abusive parents who suffocate their children with expectations." Candy said in her soft voice. Wendy could see out of all three of them, Candy was going to be the most unhinged during the concert. Mabel asked if it was okay for her to hang out with Candy and Grenda upstairs, leaving Wendy alone. Wendy said it was fine, and for them to have fun. The girls ran into the next room chatting. Before they entered, they walked in front of Mendi. Mabel introduced her as the new addition to the Myster Shack team.
"Hey Mabel, is this your squad?" Mendi asked pointing at the two girls behind her.
"Yep, they're my best friends! We ride together, we die together!" Mabel pulled Grenda and Candy in for a hug.
"That's awesome. You know what really brings friends together like nothing else? Some good, old fashioned, revenge." Mendi had a smile on her face when she said that. The girls asked who they would want revenge on?
"Hmmm, how about one of your past crushes? Like that sock puppet guy you told me about." Mendi suggested.
"Gabe? I haven't seen him since I directed that sock opera." Mabel said.
"And you put so much work into it. Then he has the nerve to just blow off all your hard work because you weren't as creepily into sock puppets as much as him. That's a week of your summer, gone! Just like that! Sounds like a guy who needs to learn to appreciate the efforts of a woman." Mendi said. Mabel started to think how much of her time she spent trying to impress him, only to be turned down because she didn't meet his unrealistic expectations. "If that were me, I'd let him know not to mess with a girl's heart ever again."
"Yeah... yeah you're right!" Mabel exerted.
"Yeah! I have so much teen rage I need an outlet for! I don't care if it's unhealthy or not productive at all!" Genda yelled. Wendy heard Grenda's loud sentence and walked to the three standing at the doorway.
"What's going on?" Wendy asked.
"We're going to glitter bomb Gabe's sock puppet collection! It's time for some payback for the emotional toll Gabe left on me." Mabel told Wendy with a huge grin.
"Whoa whoa whoa. Gabe? The sock puppet weirdo? Mabel, why even bother with that guy? He isn't worth your time, or the brain cells he occupies in your head to remember him." Wendy tapped the side of her head. "Besides, real revenge comes from moving on from your ex-crushes. By living a great life and leaving them in the past. Trust me, he's not worth the violation charges." Wendy smiled at her short friend. Mabel reconsidered taking pity revenge, being swayed away from harassing Gabe from Wendy's words.
"I suppose there are better ways to address my hormones than violating someone's personal property." Mabel scratched the back of her head. Wendy advised them to go to a thrift store and buy a bunch of junk they can smash with a baseball bat, it was how she dealt with the stress of growing up, and sometimes still does. The girls thanked Wendy and made their leave. When gone, Wendy shot daggers at Mendi.
"What the hell was that? Why are you telling Mabel to harass people who aren't relevant in her life anymore?" Wendy stared at a bored Mendi.
"Hey, I was just trying to teach the girls how to stand up for themselves when it comes to men." Mendi shrugged her arms.
"Bull." Wendy said, staring at the reckless teen. The girls stared at each other, building a tension in the air that was nearly palpable. There was a ring at the store gift shop, Wendy turned around seeing Soos was waiting at the cash register.
"Soos!" Wendy yelled. Soos' eyes popped, seeing the angry redhead walk in his direction.
"Uh, hey Wendy! Have a good shift?" Soos asked nervously.
"I've been trying to get a hold of you all day! How could you let Mendi talk you into gouging prices?" Wendy asked.
"Well, after we talked yesterday and you went to go help with Dipper, we had a one-on-one talk. She asked if I was alright, and I was letting her know I was stressed about the mortgage on the new house, and how I have to pay for this place to stay up and running too. Also, with a baby on the way, if feels like I'll be lucky to make ends meet at the prices we were selling. That's when she told me about how I should mark up prices on what the kids usually want so their parents would buy it for them. Pretty clever, right?" Soos tapped his temple.
"Yeah, if you're a scumbag. I get that you're stressed about the bills and having a kid, but that doesn't justify you to bilk people out of their money with... whatever this thing is." Wendy holds up a taxidermize lizard with a beaver's tail hot glued to its rear. Soos look down at the floor, feeling guilty for taking advantage of parents who just want to make their kids happy.
"You're right, dude. I should have put more thought into it before going through with Mendi's plan." Soos said. Wendy placed the lizard beaver on the clerk's desk.
"There's something strange going on here, Soos. Right now, I had to talk Mabel out of a surprise glitter attack on one of her past crushes because Mendi was telling her it was a good idea. It's like that girl is trying to steer people into very dumb decisions for petty satisfaction." Wendy leaned on the table, looking at the doorway with a curtain where Mendi was working.
"Huh, it's kind of like she's the opposite of you morally. Like a Mario and Wario situation. Except, your name starts with 'W' so maybe you're the bad one." Soos put his hand on his chin, squinting at Wendy.
"Soos, she literally told you to use children as a manipulation tool. AND YOU LISTENED TO HER." Wendy poked Soos chest.
"Right, sorry." Soos stopped his squinting, returning to a guilty expression. Wendy had decided to get a closer look at Mendi's life. When the day ended, the two teens said their goodbyes at the shack and headed home. Wendy waited for Mendi to be far enough of a distance to follow her. Wendy followed her for about two miles, ending up at Gravity Falls Community College. Wendy recalled her saying her mom was a teacher, she followed her into the empty campus. Mendi walked down the halls, whistling. Wendy took off her boots and followed her into the halls, moving as light-footed as possible. She would wait until Mendi turned a corner before she caught up to her. Mendi went into the only classroom that had the lights on, Wendy peaked at her from the doorway. Mendi lifted her hands close to her face, both emitting a red aura she would inhale. Wendy's blood froze seeing the ominous fumes covering Mendi. Wendy quietly pulled out her phone and pointed it at Mendi's back. She took several photos with her camera and began to walk backwards as quietly as possible. Wendy turned around, meeting a demonic eyed Mendi inches away from her face. Wendy screamed, but then had her mouth quickly covered by rag soaked in either. Wendy's scream became fainter the longer the rag was pressed against her.
"Shhhh...Shhhh... There you go." Mendi whispered, waiting for Wendy to become completely unconscious. The last thing Wendy saw before her vision turned black was Mendi's devilish smile, while her eyes returned to a normal color.
