The events of the war were causing anomalies to the fabric of time. Scientists on Salacia and Dryland tried to find out what exactly was causing them, but they were never able to do so. Those anomalies could be the reason why two conflicting histories ended up being compatible with each other, because some details, like the exact placement of events in the timeline, were changed in a way that nobody would ever notice. Maybe they were also the reason why the surprise party was actually for Delfi and not Elektra; that Angelica embarrassed herself during a school dance show alongside Tubarina; that Marli and Ester argued about copying each other's ideas for the school mural instead of babysitting days.
There are an infinite number of universes in the multiverse and with them come infinite possibilities and outcomes. Naturally, certain things go differently depending on the timeline and this story that I am telling you about takes place in one of those timelines.
When the princes and princesses were in the second grade, Miss Marla gave her students an assignment. Unlike other assignments, this one was more freeform; the students had to write an essay, individually or in groups, about an aspect of Salacia. Some suggestions included writing about a particular kingdom of Salacia and its representative animal, finding out the daily life of a civilian saline, or an overview into the history of Salacia in general.
As usual, Polvina, Ester and Tubarina decided to work together for the assignment. Ester and Tubarina wanted to write about the history of Salacia, but Polvina had other plans, which the girls discussed as they left school for the day.
"This is going to be so easy," said an elated Tubarina.
"It's too easy," argued Polvina.
"We don't wanna do anything that's hard."
It was then that Ester joined in the conversation, thinking for a moment. "Or do we? No, we don't."
The girls sat down on some seats next to the school building as their conversation continued. Polvina suggested, "We should do something more challenging. Everyone knows the story of Salacia."
"That's why it's an easy assignment!" concluded Tubarina.
Ester began explaining the history of Salacia. "Salacia created the kingdoms to care for all the sea creatures."
"Including the plants and the rocks and the reefs," continued an unenthusiastic Polvina.
Tubarina confidently completed, "And then she appointed one species to watch over everything; the sharks."
Immediately, Ester sensed that something wasn't right. "The sharks?"
"The sharks, who… protect the wisdom of the ocean and safeguard the legacy of Salacia herself."
Even Polvina felt the same way as Ester. "The sharks? You think sharks are the guardians?"
"I don't think it, I know it. Everyone knows it."
"It's news to us," replied Ester, pointing her thumb to Polvina, who nodded in reply.
"How come you don't know that sharks are the guardians of Salacia?"
"Because they're not."
Polvina chuckled. "It's the octopuses."
Ester seemingly agreed, but then corrected herself. "Yes… Uh, no! It's the starfish."
As Leia was passing by the girls, Tubarina asked, "Leia, would you tell them just who are the guardians of Salacia?"
"Easy, everyone knows that. It's the whales."
The three of them were surprised by the response. "Whales?"
The girls went around to ask the others who they thought the guardians of Salacia were; Vivi told Polvina that it was the jellyfish, Lia told Ester that it was the lionfish, and Juli and Jessi told Tubarina that it was the clownfish - in short, everyone thought their representative species were the guardians of Salacia. Even though the Laws of Salacia state that they should take care of other kingdoms as well as their own, the girls still thought that there was a guardian species who helped everyone in Salacia uphold the Laws in case anyone were to forget. Trust me, nothing about this makes any sense.
Each kingdom had a copy of the History of Salacia in their palaces, which would seemingly reveal who the guardians were. The girls agreed to get their families' copies of the History of Salacia and meet at the Octopus Palace. Unbeknownst to them, some mysterious fish were watching them, accompanied by a mysterious saline.
"So, the secret is about to be revealed…"
