This is just a little idea that popped into my mind last night right as my head hit my pillow, but I knew I had to jot it down. And this morning on the train I wrote it out, so here it is. Hope you'll like it and as always, would absolutely LOVE to read your thoughts in the reviews. Enjoy. x - M
30 - HOME
"Okay," Mike sighs, collecting the papers from the coffee table before him. "Let's wrap this up, okay? We can continue this on Monday."
Harvey peers up from the document in his hand. "What do you mean, wrap this up," he signals the case files in front of them, then pauses to look at his watch. "It's not even three in the afternoon."
"You leave around or before five all the time these days."
It's true, he does. Moving to Seattle has changed a lot for him, including a better work-life balance. And quite frankly, he has some catching up to do in the life department. "I'm not the topic of conversation here."
"You sound like your wife."
Mike's comment makes him smile, but Harvey's brows quickly turn back into an inquiring look. Because even if Harvey's working hours have changed drastically with the move to Seatle, Mike's have not.
"I would just like to see Rachel."
"Ooh," Harvey laughs, tossing the file to the side. He shifts in his seat. "Who's whipped now, huh."
Mike merely rolls his eyes and continues packing up the documents he was reviewing. "You'd do the same if you'd know you'd barely get a chance to see Donna for two days."
The kid has a point, but Harvey isn't one to admit so quickly. "What do you mean?"
"Ooh, you know," Mike continues. "Rachel does this Pilates class every other week, and there was this thing about a new exposition opening at MoPOP she's been going on about for weeks now, and then there's this spot that opened up at Violet for the tasting menu she's been dying to try, and you know how she when it comes to food."
"Right," Harvey answers, trying to wrap his brain around all the events Mike just listed. He has a vague memory of hearing some of them in passing from Donna, but he can't remember her telling him she has plans this weekend. "And is she going to any of these with Donna?"
Mike thinks for a moment but shakes his head. "No, I don't think so."
—
Donna is so into the script she's reading that she doesn't hear the door open and close nor register the usual shuffle of his feet as he kicks off his shoes at the door. A slight cough on his part breaks her attention, and she looks up immediately.
"Hey," she brings her hand to her chest to cove, her surprise automatically turning into a smile as she beams up at her husband. "You're home. Early."
Harvey smiles at the redhead, leans forward with one hand on the back of the couch and then plants a kiss on her lips before sitting down next to her. "I missed you."
Her features soften instantly; closing the script, Donna places it aside and reaches for his hand instead. She shifts over the couch, so she's leaning against him now. "I missed you too," she says; it's something she has felt a lot over the years, but she feels no shame in admitting it now. "But it's not even four, and I know we agreed to a more nine-to-five life here; this is early even for you."
He squeezes her hand. "Mike left to see Rachel because she's out a lot this weekend, so I figured I'd do the same. In case you decide to join her after all."
She takes a moment to look at him then; at her husband. It still manages to surprise her every day - the love she feels for this man. The happiness he brings her just by being near her, how there's nothing in this world she loves more than just being next to him, simply existing together.
Yet, she feels there's something on his mind that he isn't telling her. "Are you trying to get me out of the house?"
"Never," Harvey says, turning to her a bit more; he pulls her into his embrace. "I love spending time with you."
"I love spending time with you, too," she whispers, resting her head against his chest. Her eyes close the second his free arm wraps around her too. She listens to his breathing and counts the beat of his heart - an action that always manages to calm her, but this time, she notices something is off.
"Harvey."
"Hmm.."
"What's going on?"
He opens one of his eyes and looks down at his wife. Years before, she'd have had to pry information out of him, but ever since they'd gotten together, he has made a point of telling her what is on his mind.
"Do you regret moving to Seattle?"
"What?" Donna raises her head in surprise, staring at him momentarily wondering what's happening. "No, of course not. I'd move with you anywhere. Where's this coming from?"
Harvey draws in a breath and thinks of a moment years ago back in New York where he'd made another risky move, and she'd shown her support by simply telling him she'd follow him to the ends of the earth. Knowing she did and would do it again just for him, it's a little overwhelming. "It's just—"
She adjusts to a sitting position, pulling their joint hands into her lap. She nods once to encourage him to continue, even though she knows he will tell her anyway.
"Mike telling me about Rachel's plans made me think about back in New York before we got together and all the stories you told me about your weekends over the years."
Donna hums once, thinking over his words.
"You used to fill your days off with all kinds of stuff, but here –" He softly shakes his head and shrugs once. "It just made me wonder if you like Seattle."
"I do," she says, reassuringly running her thumb over his knuckles. She leans towards him again, bringing her free hand to his cheek. She holds his face in her palm for a moment, ensuring he looks at her when she speaks: "I love you. And I love our life here."
Harvey knows this. Deep down, he knows he knows this, yet hearing it still makes him smile. He can't help but ask tho. "You do?"
She shakes her head and laughs now, knowing precisely what he's doing. She leans once more and kisses him slowly, sighing as she feels his hands come up to her side as she moves to straddle him.
"Let me show you how much I love it here."
.
She's catching her breath, letting her fingertips trail over his bare chest in random patterns as she listens to his heartbeat settle down.
"I was thinking about what you said before."
Harvey draws in a deep breath and hums once. Usually, he'd make a joke about not having done a good job if she was still able to think while making love, but there's something in her tone, the way she says it, that stops him from doing so this time.
Instead, he covers her hand on his chest. Gently tugging on her fingers, wordlessly asking her to elaborate.
"About me not filling my weekends with events anymore, and I think -" Donna pauses and turns her head to rest her chin on his chest. "No, I know; I used to do it to distract myself from having no one to come home to."
He adjust his position, pulling her into his arms further, and even though he has no words for it, he knows it's what he'd been doing all along, too. All the times he stayed late at the office and started another file just before she'd walk into his office, he'd convince her to stay with the promise of a drink. It was just his way of spending a little bit more time with her.
"And now you do," he smiles in understanding.
"And now I do."
