Chapter 578 Good Cop Bad Cop
"
Scarlett used her phone to find and make motel reservations at a place near the hospital.
"I've got a reservation for three nights. I can always cancel the third if Tara is doing well," Scarlett said.
"It's going to be like when we first met."
"And I was living in motels only then I vowed to never have sex with you."
"And now?" he turned to look at her, stopping behind several cars at a red light.
She leaned over and kissed Jax passionately giving him an answer without saying a word.
"Scarlett, you're a bad girl."
"Only for you," she said with a grin. "Now I'm going to take a look at the stuff Tara wants me to give to David."
Scarlett attached the USB to her laptop and looked at the files. She read through them, her horror growing as she realized how much work Tara had put into her hunt and it wasn't paranoid ramblings of someone mentally ill. She had solid proof. More needed to be gathered, but what she amassed was explosive. It was no wonder she was worried over her safety and now, after this attempt on her life, her fears were warranted.
"Jax, this is really explosive stuff. Dr. Namid is killing babies. It's like the angel of death thing, but with a surgeon only he isn't doing it because he's mentally ill; he's doing it because of the money."
"Where's the profit in doing that?"
"Selling their parts. All the infants' organs were donated. You could make a fortune off those bodies. According to her evidence, Namid was killing some babies usually with serious health issues and then getting the parents to donate their babies' organs. Most parents can't bear the thought of their infants being cut up so organs are in scarce supply.
"It wasn't enough to kill those babies. Tara thinks he was soliciting parents of infants with terminal or serious health issues and then giving them surgeries that were highly risky with minimal benefits. In all these cases, the very wealthy parents paid and didn't use insurance meaning there was no review. The parents were bringing their infants to Namid to kill because they had serious health problems and a poor quality of life.
"The parents give their kids a highly risky surgery because they pretend to want the best for their baby and the baby didn't make it. They aren't stuck with a baby that needs round the clock care and the baby isn't suffering anymore. It's kind of a sick win win situation. And they don't have to feel guilty. None of these parents filed malpractice suits which is also unusual."
"And St. Thomas gets premium rates for all their medical services instead of the lower insurance payments," Jax added. "Doesn't anyone care about all these babies dying?"
"That's where Margaret in hospital admin comes in. She smooths it over. When you perform high risk surgeries, you don't expect a living outcome. Namid is in the twilight of his career so it isn't as though he's trying to build a reputation for being a great surgeon. It's a money grab."
"And the parents get to play grief stricken when they knew they were giving their babies to Namid to be killed. They have blood on their hands. That's cold. I can't imagine handing over little Bela for her to be killed."
"Poor little Bela didn't have a chance. Parents have to either be desperate to end their baby's suffering or cold-hearted. It's a tragic situation. Some of the babies he operated on were little more than pillows because they had severe microcephaly caused by the mothers getting bitten by mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus. The brain sort of gets eaten away and the head is much smaller than normal. I saw a thing on TV a few years ago and it is horrible."
"Isn't there some kind of treatment?"
"No. In the mother, the Zika virus either gives her mild flu-like symptoms or none at all, so she might not even realize what happened especially if she isn't getting ultra sounds. Since there is no treatment, the only options if the mother knows her baby has microcephaly are to have the baby or have an abortion."
"I can see a corrupt surgeon taking advantage of desperate parents. Not all outlaws wear cuts. The highest earners wear suits and ties or scrubs and the cops don't harass them."
"This is going to really hurt the hospital. I doubt the neonatal unit will survive the scandal."
"Tara has this crusading quality to her even in high school," Jax said pausing a moment remembering back to high school. "Sometimes I really admired her for it and sometimes it was a problem. She's not going to have many friends at St. Thomas."
"No. Everyone will agree she did the right thing and ostracize her for it. I doubt she'll have a job if they shut down the neonatal unit, but she did tell me once she also is board certified in family practice."
"I can't see her giving up being a surgeon. That was always her dream."
"Maybe she'll leave Charming again," Scarlett suggested.
"What about Steve? Aren't they pretty serious?"
Scarlett hesitated but decided to tell Jax the unvarnished truth.
"I don't think she loves him. I think he's a substitute for you and he can't compare."
"I thought she was over that," Jax said with an exasperated sigh. "She needs to move on from our past."
"I think that for her she had great romantic love for you and she hasn't found that with someone else."
"It was never romantic love for me. I always thought she and I were on the same page there, but maybe not," Jax said thinking through Scarlett's comments. "Now though, she knows that the two of us are over."
"She gets that or she and I wouldn't be friends. She doesn't love you but she wants to be in love and for her that means a guy that reminds her of you. She needs to let that go and just be open to different types of guys."
"Like you were when you met me?" Jax asked teasing her.
"I wasn't open to you at all. I didn't think I could fall in love. I thought I was a superior person who was immune to that sort of stuff. My mother broke up our family because she wanted to sleep around and she taught that to Violet. I went the opposite way. I never went through a boy crazy phase. I was so sure I couldn't fall in love, but you just kept coming to see me and it sort of happened."
"It was the thrill of the chase for me at first, but even when you told me you wouldn't sleep with me, I wanted to see you because I enjoyed your company."
"I'm so glad you didn't give up on me."
"I can't imagine life without you."
"Poor Tara. Just she wants to find a great relationship. I hope she lives to find one."
Jax pulled the van into the hospital parking lot and parked.
"I have to warn you that I'm not going to be nice Scarlett."
"Uh-huh."
"Really. I'm going to be tough if I need to be."
"You know the guys in the MC are still afraid of you. They are always saying they better be nice to me or I'll have you kick their asses."
"That's not good," Scarlett said dismayed. She didn't like that she'd made Jax look weak in front of the MC.
"No, you don't get it. A great old lady is fiercely protective. They all want to find a woman like you. Chibs still talks about how you threatened to shove a broken bottle up his ass."
"I wouldn't have really done that," Scarlett confessed. "I would have shot him in the foot."
Jax burst into laughter. They got out of the van and walked towards the hospital.
"OK, here's the game plan. I'm going to play bad cop and you are going to be good cop."
"I'm an outlaw biker," Jax reminded her.
"Hmmm. Good point. OK. I'm still going to be bad cop if necessary and you are going to be the good outlaw biker. People will be blown away by the change in stereotypes."
"Take them by surprise," Jax said with a grin. "I like the way you think."
They went up to the third floor where the surgical waiting rooms were located.
"How is she?" Scarlett asked Steve.
"They won't tell me. Privacy fucking laws."
"I'll find out," Scarlett said with fire in her eyes.
The medical staff was about to get bad copped.
