Chapter Seven

It has been a few days since Danielle had learned about Eda's curse and learning what she know calls glyphs. Danielle had mentioned to Eda during that time about the glyph being seen among the stars her first full day on the isles and seeing it in the spell circle after her cellphone glitched, which got Eda thinking about glyphs coming from nature itself. During those days, Danielle had found two single glyphs and what looked to be combinations. One while studying a flower with a magnifying glass, another while staring intently at a lit candle, another when Eda cast a ball of water in her hands, and one more when Danielle was accidently electrocuted. Danielle had even figured out how to get the glyphs to be whatever she wanted. Eda and King were even practicing with glyphs. Willow and Gus had come over on occasions to hang out and learned that Danielle could use magic already. Today though was a little break, with Eda setting up her stand.

"I am really liking this book you brought with you," said King, reading a book of Danielle's.

"Yeah, mom got me into liking the Henry Quilter series," said Danielle, letting King read the book.

"At least it doesn't have such flowery words," said Eda, dusting the stand.

"Um, Eda?" said Danielle, getting Eda's attention while looking at the empty streets. "Is today some kind of holiday? Cause the streets are empty."

"This is a bad omen," said Eda, staring at the empty streets. "There must be something horrible happening today."

"Horrible?" said Danielle, staring at Eda. "There's not a pandemic going around, is there? My realm is already trying to recover from one."

"What?" said Eda, staring at Danielle.

"Danielle!" shouted Gus, running over to the stand with Willow. "Something amazing is happening today!"

"Hi Gus, Hi Willow. Been a while," said Danielle, before seeing a flier in Willow's hand. "What's that?"

"It's the annual covention!" replied Willow, holding up the flier. "Student witches get to see all the types of covens before they're placed in one. There's even a mystery guest this year!"

"That's interesting," said Danielle, looking at the flier than Eda. "Eda, want to check it out?"

"Absolutely not," replied Eda, staring at Danielle. "I never joined a coven for a reason. Sure it's like a fun club for witches, but you're also giving up your magical independence to be part of a crooked system."

"I agree with Eda. Stay free, don't be bound."

"Mmm," said Willow, dropping the flier.

"Eh, but, you know, no judgment," said Eda, crossing her arms over her chest. "In any case, I haven't been to one since we were girls."

"Went with family back in the day?" asked Danielle, staring at Eda. "Or maybe with a group of friends?"

"I… the… I mean…" said Eda, stammering.

"It's okay," said Danielle, looking at Eda. "You'll tell me eventually."

"You're so understanding," said Eda, ruffling Danielle's hair. "But no, we're not going."

"There could be freebies," said Danielle, staring at Eda.

"Point taken," said Eda, sighing before relenting. "Fine, we'll go."

"Here Danielle," said King, handing Danielle back her book. "I'll read more later."

Packing up the stand for the day, Eda, Danielle and King head towards the convention with Willow and Gus. Before even getting close to the building, Eda had put on a cowl to hide her identity. Staring at the building before them, Danielle sees a bunch of witches and demons walking about.

"Gotta keep a low profile," said Eda, struggling to pull her hood up.

"Yeah, wouldn't want you back in prison," said Danielle, seeing stuff fall out of Eda's hair. "You haven't really done anything to warrant it since I've been here."

"Someone's got my back," said Eda, staring at Danielle.

"Maybe this informative event will inspire you to join a coven," said Willow, holding up the flier only for Eda to burn it away.

"Let's just get this over with," said Eda, finally got the hood up.

"Whoa," said Danielle, entering the building with everyone. "Are some off-shoots from the main nine?"

"Yup," replied Willow, pointing at certain ones while they walked. "Big Dog Coven, Small Cat Coven, Tiniest Cat Coven are part of the Beast Keeping Coven while the Flower Coven, Carnivorous Plant Coven, Succulent Coven are part of the Plant Coven."

"Then there's the Meditation Coven, the Oculus Coven, the Scrying Coven are part of the Oracle Coven," said Gus, pointing to the other booths. "Then there's Wood Coven, the Pottery Coven under the Construction Coven."

"Also the Grumpy Coven," said Willow, after hearing Eda groan.

"What was that?" said Eda, staring at Willow.

"Whoa, that's a lot of covens," said Danielle, staring at each booth. "Why have so many covens?"

"That's just how it is," replied Willow, before standing before a Construction booth. "That's the Construction Coven. They use power glyphs to increase their strength."

"Whoa!" said Danielle, watching a certain inmate that she busted out be empowered by a power glyph before a light blue double of herself ducks out from behind her. "An illusion… do I really look like that?"

"Ah! You've been taken in by the allure of the Illusionist Coven. We like to magic with a hint..." said Gus, joining the other two illusionists before disappearing in a cloud then reappearing a few feet away. "Of showmanship."

"Hey Eda, can you explain why you don't want to join a coven?" asked Danielle, staring at Eda.

"Watch closely, Danielle," said Eda, getting Danielle to see someone get branded with a sigil. "When you join a coven, all your other magic is sealed away."

"Well, that's not right," said Danielle,

"You darn tooting it's not right. Those sigils are a mark of death!"

"What?" said Danielle, gasping before getting a little green in the face.

"From now on, that kid will only be able to make illusions. Since I never joined a coven, I can do every kind of magic," said Eda, conjuring a fireball in one hand and a sphere of water in the other. "That's why I'm the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles."

"Are you okay Danielle?" asked King, looking at Danielle. "You don't look so good. What the voice in your head say this time?"

"It called these sigils…" said Danielle, catching her breath. "A mark of death."

"What!?" said Eda and King, staring at Danielle with shocked faces as well as Willow and Gus.

"Why would the voice in your head call them that?" asked Willow, staring at Danielle.

"I don't know but it as never been wrong in guiding me since I got here," replied Danielle, looking at everyone while rubbing her arm. "I wouldn't get those sigils if it meant your death."

"Alright, we won't," said Willow and Gus, looking at Danielle.

"Thanks, you guys are good people," said Danielle, walking before spotting a unique booth. "Why does this one feel different from all the others?"

"It's the Emperor's Coven!" replied Gus, excited. "Do you think they'll sign my forehead?"

"Only one way to find out!" said Willow, running alongside Gus to see some Coven Scouts.

"King, don't wonder off for too long," said Danielle, seeing King be lured into accepting a pen. "The meetup point is the entrance."

"Okay," said King, about to wonder about the covention. "Can do."

"Aren't you coming Eda?" asked Danielle, looking at Eda. "I don't feel comfortable after hearing about those sigils."

"All right, let's see this mess," said Eda, gesturing Danielle to follow before sitting down in the stands in the stadium.

"Let's see what this Emperor's Coven is about," said Danielle, seeing the lights dim then seeing Principal Bump rising from the floor of the stadium with green magic swirling around him.

"It's run by a tyrant! Someone that wants to eradicate this beautiful yet creepy world."

"Wait, why would they want to eradicate their own world?" asked Danielle, speaking to the voice.

"Because this is not their world! Nor are they of any race from here!"

"Well…" said Danielle, sighing. "Let me at least see what this Emperor's Coven is about.

"Danielle!" said Willow and Gus, getting Danielle to see Gus's autographed forehead.

"Great," said Danielle, waving and smiling at Willow and Gus.

"Feast your eyes on this elite force, each member handpicked to help usher in a new age of controlled magic," said Principal Bump, gesturing to three Coven Scouts that displayed their magic.

"When does that "elite force" get here?" asked Eda, leaning towards a demon next to her and laughing.

"Members of the Emperor's Coven have access to all… yes, all forms of magic," said Principal Bump, getting the crowd to "Ooh" and "Aah" with him. "But... only the best can ascend these ranks. Some day that could be one of you!"

"Amity," said Danielle, seeing Amity squeal when pointed to. "Guess this is the coven she wants to join."

"She'll see the light eventually."

"And now, I'm pleased to introduce the esteemed leader of this coven and this year's mystery guest. You know her, you love her!" said Principal Bump, getting the crowd excited for the mystery guest. "Lilith!"

"And there she is… Lilith Clawthorne, Eda's older sister."

"Eda's sister?" said Danielle, staring at Lilith. "Can't really tell from up here. Loved her entrance."

"Thank you, all," said Lilith, magically sending her cape and mask towards Principal Bump. "It wasn't easy for me to rise to the top. I also started from humble beginnings."

"That's because Eda… you know what, I'll let you see for yourself when it happens."

"Yeah, you can be quite cryptish," said Danielle, rubbing her forehead

"Now I have the highest honor of enforcing the Emperor's will. So be more! The Emperor's Coven awaits you!" said Lilith, spinning and creating a raven illusion

"Her exit was awesome as well," said Danielle, before seeing Eda leave the stadium and following after her. "Eda."

"I'm gonna head home and wash the con funk off my skin," said Eda, staring at Danielle.

"Yeah, the voice mentioned that was your sister," said Danielle, twirling a lock of hair between her fingers. "I'm guessing you two don't have much of a relationship anymore."

"Story for a later time… much later," said Eda, walking away.

"Well, I'll see you at the house," said Danielle, waving to Eda. "I wonder what freebies I can get for her… mmm."

"Watch where you…" said Amity, turning around after being bumped into by Danielle. "Oh, it's you. The intruder."

"Did Principal Bump not explain to you about the circumstances?" asked Danielle, staring at Amity. "You know what… never mind. Name's Danielle, I'm a human."

"Ugh. Put that away," said Amity, slapping Danielle's hand away. "You're the one that got me in trouble with Principal Bump and I never get in trouble."

"Yeah, I don't like trouble either," said Danielle, following after Amity. "But things happen for a reason."

"You can't be here!" said Amity, turning around to face Danielle. "This covention is for witches only."

"Look, I'm taking magic lessons from a powerful witch and an awesome demon. I don't need to be a witch to learn magic Prefect. And I bet not everyone here is a witch," said Danielle, before hearing King nearby. "Hmmm."

"Cupcakes in my tummy-tum makes the King say yummy-yum!" said King, wearing a bunch of clothes and holding a cupcake.

"So you'll join the Bakers Coven?" asked a Member of the Baker's Coven, following after King.

"Hmm... Nope!" said King, stealing another cupcake off the platter and heading towards Danielle. "Oh, hey, Danielle! Look at all those offerings…"

"Got'cha," said Danielle, catching King after he tripped on his scarf, though still dropped his cupcake. "Let me get that for ya… hey!"

"Oops," said Amity, stepping on the cupcake. "That was an accident."

"No, it wasn't. That was on purpose Prefect!" said Danielle, angry at Amity.

"What are you going to do about it human?" asked Amity, staring at Danielle.

"Apologize," said Danielle, glaring at Amity. "Apologize to King, right now."

"No," said Amity, crossing her arms over her chest. "You and your pet are giving witches in training a bad name anyway."

"What do I have to do to get it through your thick head?" said Danielle, staring at Amity with anger in her eyes.

"Oh, I don't know," said Amity, flipping her hair. "How about a duel then?"

"A duel…" said Danielle, looking at Amity. "I'm not lowering myself to your level."

"Do it, Danielle!" said King, looking at Danielle. "For my honor!"

"Alright King," said Danielle, sighing before looking at Amity. "What are the terms?"

"When I win, not only do you have to tell the whole covention you're not a witch, you have to stop training forever," said Amity, staring at Danielle.

"I'm not training to be a witch," said Danielle, staring at Amity. "But if I win, you apologize to King. Not only that, but you got to admit that humans can be witches to the whole convention. I got to stick up for my fellow humans."

"Deal," said Amity, putting a spell circle around Danielle's hand then shaking it.

"Uh-oh," said Danielle, seeing her hand have a little glow. "The Enduring Pledge."

"What? No!" said Amity, staring at Danielle. "The everlasting oath! Where'd you get such a…"

"A book series I read," said Danielle, pocketing her hand.

"Oh… meet back inside the theater in one hour," said Amity, walking away. "Let's see what kind of witch you are."

"I am not…" said Danielle, growling before picking up King and walking away herself. "Come on King. Let's find Eda, I bet she's still here."

"Yup," said King, spotting Eda not far away. "There she is."

"Eda," said Danielle, running over to Eda and Lilith. "Problem, I may have been challenged to a duel by Amity."

"Mmm, it seems your student has met my strongest protégé. And look at those ears!" said Lilith, pulling Danielle's hair back some. "Is she human? Where did you even find one of these?"

"Yeah, I can see the resemblance now," said Danielle, really getting a good look at Lilith. "Also, hi."

"Okay, Edalyn," said Lilith, burning nearby wanted posters of Eda. "For one day, you won't have to hide from the law, because I want to see how good a teacher you really are."

"Come on, kid," said Eda, placing a hand on Danielle's shoulders. "Time to prepare for bloodshed."

"I'd rather not spill any blood," said Danielle, looking at Eda. "Just want to knock some sense into Amity."

"Well, I'll leave you two be," said King, hopping out of Danielle's arms. "I'm going to search for more offerings."

"Alright, you got quite a few glyphs on hand, I presume, plus some potions," said Eda, looking at Danielle.

"Plenty," said Danielle, showing the glyphs and potions on hand. "And those sparring lessons have been helpful. Just got to put to the test what I learned in this duel with Amity."

"Boy, I hope you didn't make an everlasting oath to stop learning magic or anything," said Eda, looking at Danielle. "You'd be toast."

"She initiated it," said Danielle, staring at the ground.

"Well, let's get to the theater," said Eda, before thinking. "I can set up some traps to help Danielle along the way."

Coming upon the stadium, Eda had Danielle stand outside for a bit. Setting up various magical traps, Eda claps her hands free of dust before ushering Danielle in. Spotting Lilith and Amity up on the dais, Danielle grips her hands before noticing some mounds on the field.

"What the…" said Danielle, seeing a lot of mounds.

"Beloved citizens, the Emperor's Coven proudly presents an impromptu demonstration of the sort of witch we seek every year," said Lilith, gesturing Amity forward. "Introducing Amity Blight. Versus...some human girl."

"The audience is pretty bias," said Danielle, hearing the comments from the audience. "Well, I just got to show them is all."

"Hey, you see those mounds?" asked Eda, pointing to the mounds. "Get Amity to land on one of those and she'll set off my magic traps."

"Eda…" said Danielle, looking at Eda.

"Now I know you're good but I wouldn't put it pass someone who's trained under my sister," said Eda, pushing Danielle forward. "Now go out there and show them what you got."

"Oh, I know I will," said Danielle, setting off a light glyph and a lightning glyph, shaping it into a claymore.

"Kid, what did you just…" said Eda, seeing that Danielle stabbed the ground and setting off her traps.

"She-she just…" said Amity, watching each trap go off and glaring at Danielle.

"I accept the gesture Eda but I rather not cheat to win," said Danielle, walking forward slightly. "Now then, why don't we have this little dance, Amity."

"This human…" thought Lilith, staring at Danielle. "Is interesting."

"Fine! Abomination. Rise!" shouted Amity, conjuring an abomination that was taller than what she normally could produce. "Whoa. Show me what you got, human!"

"Gladly!" said Danielle, running forward before thinking. "That thing is huge! I got to find a way around it."

Dodging out of the way when the abomination tossed its own head, Danielle slashes at its legs, making it tumble to the ground. Activating both a water glyph and a lightning glyph, Danielle has a bunch of electrified bubbles floating around the abomination. Swatting them away, yielded some of the abomination to lose some of its goo. Not wanting the duel to last long, Danielle sets off a fire glyph and plant glyph combo, yielding a large flower to spew flames at the abomination, incinerating it to nonexistent. Seeing that Amity was about to conjure another abomination, Danielle activates a plant glyph, resulting in tangling Amity up in vines, preventing her from casting any spell circles

"Yield," said Danielle, pointing the light claymore at Amity. "I don't want to see either one of us getting hurt over some petty duel."

"Fine, you win," said Amity, lowering her head in defeat.

"Whoo-hoo!" shouted Eda, pulling Danielle into a headlock and giving her a noogie. "That's my girl!"

"King," said Danielle, hearing King and seeing him fall down from the stands before setting off a plant glyph, making King fall into a flower that bent towards Danielle. "Got'cha."

"Did you have to do it like that?" asked King, blushing slightly in embarrassment. "That was embarrassing."

"Way too much clothes there King," said Danielle, having to place King on the ground cause of how many clothes he was wearing.

"Well, it looks like you won fair and square," said Lilith, staring at Eda and Danielle. "This human child is quite considerate. She's obviously wasted on you. Why not join the Emperor's Coven?"

"Thanks for the offer but no," said Danielle, looking at Lilith. "I won't be the Emperor's lapdog."

"Ha!" laughed Eda, pointing at Lilith.

"Look, if you apologize to King, then you don't have to do the second one," said Danielle, looking at Amity. "Okay."

"No, I'll do it. I'm sorry King for stepping on your cupcake… And humans can be witches," said Amity, loud enough while rubbing the back of her neck before feeling something. "Huh… what's this?"

"A power glyph from the Construction Coven," said Eda, grabbing the power glyph and holding it up. "Ah-ha! Yes, yes, yes-yes-yes! You cheated. Perfect, prissy Lilith cheated. Hot dang, I love coventions! La-la-la…"

"I only did that because I knew you would cheat!" said Lilith, staring at Eda as she did a victory dance. "I didn't anticipate the human to be so considerate!"

"Still cheated!" said Eda, pointing at Lilith. "Welcome down to my level!"

"Eda, that's a little much," said Danielle, watching Eda taunt Lilith. "Don'cha think…"

"But... I didn't know!" said Amity, looking around before running out of the stadium.

"Amity, wait," said Danielle, running after Amity and spotting her in a dark corner. "Hey Amity, you okay?"

"Ugh, seriously?" said Amity, turning away from Danielle. "Just leave me alone."

"I didn't mean for this to go like this," said Danielle, sitting down next to Amity. "If I had noticed the power glyph, I've would have burned it so you could fight fairly as well. So, sorry for my mentor embarrassing you in front of everyone."

"Your mentor made me look like a fool in front of the Emperor's Coven. My future!" said Amity, looking at Danielle. "I have been working my whole life to get to the top!"

"Is it really your future?" asked Danielle, staring at Amity. "Or is it your parents future for you?"

"Huh…?" said Amity, staring at Danielle with confusion on her face.

"Think about it," said Danielle, looking at Amity.

"Why are you even here in our realm?" asked Amity, staring away from Danielle.

"To find my mom," replied Danielle, making Amity gasp before drawing a light glyph and activating it. "And if this long-lost magic I found helps me find her…"

"Long lost magic…" said Amity, staring at the sphere of light in awe. "I've never seen anything like this."

"Yup, this is my magic," said Danielle, looking at Amity. "Set myself apart from all the rest."

"You don't have to worry about the oath," said Amity, standing up. "The moment I upheld by end of the bargain, it vanished."

"Well, I best check on Eda and King," said Danielle, waving bye while walking away. "See you around."

"Yeah," said Amity, waving back. "See you."

"Danielle!" shouted King, running over to Danielle. "You left me!"

"Sorry King," said Danielle, bending down and petting King. "I thought you were still with Eda in the stadium."

"Nope," said King, wagging his tail.

"You definitely got a lot of freebies," said Danielle, seeing all the freebies King was wearing. "Why don't we get some totes to help carry them all. Give you some freedom of movement."

"Already got one," said King, pulling a tote bag out.

"Let's get these in there," said Danielle, placing some of the freebies in the tote alongside King.

"Aw man," said King, seeing the tote completely filled after placing everything in there. "I wanted to ride in it."

"How bout my hood instead?" asked Danielle, only for King to climb her and situate himself in her hood. "Much better?"

"Oh yeah," said King, leaning his head on Danielle's shoulder. "Much better."

"We gotta go," said Eda, walking over to Danielle and King.

"Dare I ask what happened while I was gone?" asked Danielle, staring at Eda.

"Story for later," said Eda, before walking towards the doors.

"Eda," said Danielle, gaining Eda's attention as she walked towards the doors. "Will I be able to find my mom?"

"I really don't have the answer for that. You're the only one that knows," replied Eda, pulling Danielle into a side hug. "Now, let's go before my sister realizes I tied her pointy shoes together."

"And that's our cue to skedaddle," said Danielle, exiting the building with Eda and King when they heard Lilith scream.
