"Enter" I tell him. My brother opens the door and enters. I look up from my book. "What is it, Nicol?"
Nicol has an interesting look on his face.
"The Ebony Blade, the ancient relic of the Bullions, it has been pulled." Nicol said.
The Ebony Blade. It has a few names. This weapon, and the family that guards it, did not exist in the game. The blade is rumored to be from the heavens, planted into the ground by an angel. When the sword is lifted, an era of utopian bliss will cover the land.
I have doubts on the accuracy of that, but it sounds nice.

What? What are doom points? And why can I see that? Is this the code for the game or something? I've seen novels sort of like this, back in my old world.
"Sophia, are you ok?" Nico, asked me.
"Oh, yes. I'm fine. Just off in thought." I respond.
Doom points sound like a hidden system to calculate how close you are to a doomed end. But I'm not familiar with this event. And being put on a doomed path because someone else pulled the sword out? That's crazy! Maybe I was supposed to do it myself. But how would I have even known to do that?
Maybe there is a way to get rid of these points.

I'm not sure what is going on here. But I have an idea.
"Who pulled out the sword, Nicol?" I asked my brother. I must have looked really out of it, because his face showed obvious concern for my well being.
"One of the children of the Dullions' mansion staff. A boy of Atizian descent." Nicol answered.
Atizians are just one of the African inspired nationalities in this world. There aren't a lot of them in this Kingdom, but they're not unheard of.
"Lewis Cleghorn, eldest son of the Cleghorns. He'll become a noble, eventually. For now he is a knight in training." Nicol...probably cared more about this than he should.
This was either a great idea, or a horrible one.
"Brother, how hard would it be to meet Sir Lewis Cleghorn."

The cyoa did not mention anything about this system, but I remember something similar to this necklace being available in the item section. This thing cost me all of my Doom points, but considering this is nightmare mode, I'm sure I'll be collecting tons of that. I mean, I could be completely wrong, but I'm willing to risk it.
Someone pulling out some dark Excalibur rip off is probably the determining event to turn on nightmare mode.
"Maria, dear, where did you get that necklace?" My mother asked me. She was looking at it with awe in her eyes.
"Oh, I just found it." I lied easily. She nods, not asking anymore questions.
