Chapter One: Misplaced
Buffy was greeted by darkness when she opened her eyes. She was confused and dizzy. Buffy felt like she was somewhere else. The warm, safe feelings she had were gone. The sense of peace was gone. She had no idea where she was. She blinked and evaluated her surroundings. Buffy then realized she was in the middle of a road with trees on either side. The moon shone brightly on the street in front of her. Buffy shrugged and walked down the street.
Street lamps fell from the sky and appeared on either side of her as she walked down the road. It was like everything was falling into place. Buffy continued to walk and then stopped. The First Slayer was at the end of the road. Buffy got a bad feeling and shook her head. She whirled around and started to run down the road in the opposite direction. The First Slayer reappeared at the end of the road.
"No." Buffy said.
Then the First Slayer appeared to be closer than what Buffy had thought. Buffy whirled around again and the First Slayer was right in front of her. She jumped and stepped back. Buffy shook her head and then the First Slayer vanished without a word. Confusion engulfed Buffy at that moment. What was she doing here? She wondered. Where was she?
This place seemed hard and cold. The dark surrounded her and the moon disappeared. The only source of light were the street lamps. The air blew hard and pushed Buffy down the road. She turned around and saw the First Slayer again. She shook her head. Buffy did not want to go down that road. She was happy. Where did the happiness go? She felt loved. She felt finished and complete.
The road to the First Slayer felt like more business. Buffy felt like she was being pushed back to her old life. No, she thought. That was not going to happen! Buffy panicked and sat down. Whispers swarmed all around her. It was like many people talking all at once. Buffy put her hands on her ears and stayed still. She tried not to move. She closed her eyes tightly and opened them.
Now she was surrounded by light. Sunshine was all around her and the skies were a beautiful blue. The clouds were so close that Buffy felt like she was in a snow globe. Buffy stood up and thought, what the hell? She was in the middle of a town. The town looked simple. Modern houses on either side of the road with identical front yard lawns and mail boxes. Buffy stepped forward. It seemed safe to walk.
Buffy walked down the road. She looked at the houses and noticed something. There were no people. It was a perfect day and there were no people. Buffy walked down the street and heard nothing. She listened carefully and noticed there were no birds either. Buffy wondered where she was. Then she looked at the end of the street and saw something. It was the First Slayer again. She felt no fear this time.
Buffy felt like she was on a mission. She walked down the street until she was closer to the First Slayer. When Buffy reached the First Slayer she stopped walking. The First Slayer pointed to the right and Buffy understood the message. She looked to the right of her and saw a two-story house. There was nothing special about it, except the mailbox.
The mailbox was decorated with stickers and yarn. Buffy walked to the mailbox and opened it. There was mail inside the mailbox. Buffy pulled out the letters and looked at the name. The name was: Maddie Pierson. Buffy put the letters back inside the mailbox and closed it. She walked to the front door of the house and stopped. She sighed heavily and wrapped her hand on the doorknob.
Buffy stepped into the house. She was greeted by an open living room and a hallway that led into the kitchen. The stairs were to the right of her. Buffy walked around the stairs and into the living room. Inside the room contained pictures of loved ones, a fireplace, and a few comfy couches. Buffy toured the room and looked at one of the pictures.
There was a husband and wife together with a daughter on the beach. Buffy picked up the picture and looked at it. She had never seen these people before so she was curious. The three of them looked like a happy family. Buffy skipped the kitchen and walked upstairs. There was another hallway. To the right at the top of the stairs was one bedroom. Next to the bedroom there was a bathroom.
At the end of the hallway there were three rooms. Buffy skipped the bathroom and turned to her left. There was an office, but nothing important. She walked to the end of the hallway and turned to her left again. There was a bedroom that she walked into. It had a bed, a dresser, a desk, and a secretary. There were pictures of people that Buffy hadn't recognized all over the room. The room was covered in blue paint and posters of bands.
The First Slayer appeared in front of the desk and pointed at the desk. Buffy walked forward, not afraid. She investigated the desk and then the First Slayer disappeared. Buffy opened the drawers and found a diary. This was one realistic dream, she thought, but continued to look at the diary. Buffy opened the diary to the last couple of pages and found some interesting passages. She read them and turned to the last page.
"I have unusual strength and it scares people." Buffy read out loud. She paused and set the diary down. She looked at the First Slayer. "I'm guessing a Potential Slayer?"
The First Slayer said nothing and vanished. Buffy rolled her eyes. Thanks for explaining nothing, she thought, and walked downstairs. Buffy sat on the couch and studied the pictures in the living room. This was a nice place, she thought. She wondered if something bad happened to the Piersons. She blinked and the entire scenery had changed. Buffy fell to the ground and groaned.
There was too much change going on. Now she was back outside. Buffy sighed heavily and stood up. She was in the forest. Buffy looked around and walked forward. The First Slayer was gone. Buffy was confused. She felt like she traveled to different worlds. The happiness that she once felt was still gone. She wondered where she was now. Buffy walked through the forest and saw no one.
She blinked and then opened her eyes again. Buffy heard beeping noises and found herself in a hospital room. Buffy looked around and there was someone next to her bedside. Someone familiar. Is that Wesley? She thought, but kept her thoughts to herself. Wesley stood up and said,
"I'll go get the doctor."
Wesley left the room and Buffy tried to sit up in her bed. She was in pain. Her body ached. A doctor rushed into the room and looked at Buffy. He asked her some routine questions and the nurses helped Buffy out. They unhooked her from some of the machines since she was awake at the moment. The doctors also told her where she was, which was Glendale California Hospital. Wesley waited outside of the room and watched the doctors do their work. He pulled out his cellphone and called Giles.
"She's awake." Wesley told him.
"Good." Giles said. "She is going to need training." He explained. "I think you should stay with her."
"Alright. I will stay and I will train her." Wesley said.
"Sounds good. Keep me posted." Giles said and hung up.
Wesley waited until the doctor and nurses were gone. After they finished what they needed to do, he walked back into Maddie's room. Buffy looked at Wesley and was surprised. She was surprised to see him and wondered what he was doing here. Buffy was barely able to answer some of the questions that the doctor had asked. She thought that she was Buffy, but some of the questions that the doctors had asked had made her wonder. She turned to Wesley and asked,
"May I have a mirror?"
Wesley looked at her, perplexed. A mirror? He wondered and looked around. There was a mirror in the bathroom, but he did not have one on his person. Wesley stood up and asked for a nurse. The nurse helped Buffy walk to the bathroom. Buffy walked inside the bathroom and once the nurse had left, she shut the door. She walked to the mirror and noticed her appearance. Her jaw dropped.
She was the girl from the pictures! Buffy was shocked. This was not her body. It was Maddie Peierson's body. She wasn't The Slayer. She was in the body of a Potential Slayer! Buffy looked at her arms and hands. She touched her hair and looked at her eyes. Buffy had long brown hair and brown eyes.
She felt like she was in Faith's body all over again, but there were some differences. Her skin was tan and her body was skinny. It wasn't curvy like Faith's body. Buffy stared at her reflection in awe. She stayed in the bathroom for a few minutes, which worried Wesley.
Wesley knocked on the door and asked, "Are you okay?"
Buffy turned her attention to the door. How was she supposed to explain all this? The nurse came back and helped Buffy back to her bed. She crawled into bed and the nurse tucked her in. Wesley sat down next to Buffy and offered his hand.
"My name is Wesley Wyndam-Pryce." He introduced himself. "It's nice to meet you."
Buffy awkwardly shook his hand. "It's nice to meet you too." She paused. "Where are my parents?"
"They're on their way." Wesley explained. "Don't worry about that just now. Rest. I'll be here."
Buffy thought it was a little weird that Wesley was here, but she didn't want to think about it. Wesley stood up and walked towards the door.
"I'll be here if you need me." He said and walked out of the room.
He closed the door behind him and Buffy sighed heavily. She had a bad feeling. Why was she back here? She wondered. Buffy missed that feeling of peace. She missed her mother and the people that surrounded her in Heaven. This wasn't Heaven. She was misplaced.
