Chapter 3: A mind for magic holds little else
When the Emergency response force arrived it was all but a slow ordeal, after they had swept through the building for hostiles and explosives they returned to the common, I was very exited to meet them and ask questions.
It turns out the mages were happy to meet me as well, within hours they had me tested for aptitude and quantity of magic, there was a veritable miasma of excitement from some of the men as I was tested, It felt nice, the feeling of my energy flowing through circuits exerting the weight of my mind on those around me pushing the unsteady to the floor and staggering the weak.
It wasn't long until they moved me to a train stop and then a research base, upon arrival I was told I could ask for whatever I wanted for the duration of my stay, I immediately asked for something to cover my face, The gasmask I was supplied with did not disappoint.
They taught me how to forget things, how to force my mind to stop thinking, how to meditate and concentrate, drawing out specific qualities they desired.
the computational orbs they gave me didn't survive, the cases splintered and the circuits dissolving, when the heads requested a more robust design the scientists complained but got to work, I was quickly supplied with a large cylindrical 'orb' so simplified and reinforced it was almost analogue in function, the scientists told me it would do little in the way of complex calculations and spells but it will survive my blunt magic and dish out considerable power.
It survived, It functioned perfectly giving off a brilliant golden glow whenever I took flight, the scientists warned me of the dangers of my particular flight method, warning of the vibrations and shockwaves my flight produces in my immediate area being a threat to allies and enemies alike.
I was quickly warned off attempting to use normal rifles; as the first few I took for flying and test firing quickly gave out, either crumbling and cracking or violently sheering apart.
Instead they requisitioned a wonderful new 'Solothurn S-18/100' 20mm rifle and added some shielding to a few parts, It was difficult to fire at first but a few range days of firing both airborne and not allowed me to get a hold on the recoil, It also helped that the development team fashioned me a brace and fixing for my arm.
sadly attempts to make a reliable pistol or sub-machinegun failed as they were all too delicate to survive the harsh air, my flight and most of all my spell shots, instead they fashioned me a nice revolver that I can attach to my arm brace via a rail mount and heavy purpose built bolted crimps, the revolver was helpfully chambered in the very common 7.92x57mm cartridge although the kick made it difficult to get used to, the replaceable cylinder could only hold 5 shots, but I kept two extras preloaded when I was shooting.
all of that left me with little space left to carry other utilities so I was granted a Trench shovel as my only CQC option due to commands insistence of "superior tactical utility", I wasent fully convinced but accepted the fact they likely knew better than me.
as it turned out that was all just the beginning as it led up to this moment starring me sitting in a chair in front of someone important "so . . . The government is to officially gain your guardianship by nightfall, do you have any objections?" I stare absently at the grim man in front of me "No Sir!" I say without even considering to object.
"good . . . good, ah yes" I see him sifting through papers to find something before a grim look momentarily adorns his face "hmm . . . y-you will be transferred under the research and training of Dr. Schugel and his team, be careful; He is an . . . eccentric man".
I was quickly escorted out and onto a plane with whatever equipment I had amassed at the base.
"goodbye, I cant wait to meet you all again" I mumble to the researchers and teachers through my gasmask moments before the doors are closed and the plane begins its taxi . . .
once again a short chapter sorry, the next chapter should be longer
