Chapter 13—Gunnar's Clearance to Fly Home

December 27th, 1999

Gunnar's POV

Bella surprised us all last night vith vhat she brought home, a new car. Not just an old gently used car, but a brand new 2000 Mercedes-Benz C class Kompressor Sedan. Needless to say, I vas impressed, and it was ten steps above the Mercury that Adam and I vere driving now that Adam's Grandma had found the paperwork to the car.

"GUNNAR WHAT TIME IS THE APPOINTMENT WITH THE CARDIOLOGIST?" Father yelled while we were eating breakfast.

"1030," I said.

"Don't forget duck practice at 1130," Adam said.

"I know. I vill be there as soon as I can be," I said.

As soon as breakfast vas over Bella vent vo pick up Charlie, Connie and Guy for practice. Adam rode vith Coach and I had vo drive my Father, Astrid, and Myself vo vhe Cardiologist.

"IT'S 1030 GUNNAR WHY HAVEN'T WE BEEN CALLED BACK YET?" Father said.

"Give vhem vime Pabbi, vhey have other people in front of me," I said.

"I JUST KNOW THAT IN ÍSLAND YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED BACK RIGHT AWAY. UNLESS YOU WERE STUPID ENOUGH TO BRÁÐAMÓTTAKA (EMERGANCY ROOM)," Father said.

"Pabbi hættir (Daddy stop)," Astrid said.

"Vhey vill get vo me vhen vhey are ready for me," I said.

"NEI ÉG ER Ráðherra erlendra sambanda Ég krefst þess að sonur minn verði séð núna! Heimskir Amerískir svínar ! (NO, I AM THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN RELATIONS I DEMAND THAT MY SON BE SEEN NOW! STUPID AMERICAN PIGS!)," Father said.

"Guð þú ert svo vandræðalegur (God you are such an embarrassment)," Astrid and I said quietly together.

15 minutes later we heard. "Gunnar Stahl?" from a nurse.

"Father lets go," I said.

"ABOUT TIME!" Father said.

"Hey Gunnar, I am Nurse Perkins, I will be your nurse today," Nurse Perkins said.

"Hi," I said.

"Why don't you step on the scale, and we will get your weight," Nurse Perkins said.

"Okay," I said.

I stepped on the scale and the nurse had to move the bars a couple of times to read my weight. I knew that I had gained a little weight from not being as active, Ms. Michele had to buy some clothes in a bigger size for me.

"188 pounds," Nurse Perkins said.

"WHAT IS THAT IN KILOS?" Father asked.

"Kilos? I would have to look that up," Nurse Perkins said.

"85," I said.

"GUNNAR YOU ARE TOO HEAVY YOU NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT," Father said.

"Father I can't do vhat right now. Vecause I am still vecovering. It vill come off once I start skating again," I said.

"IT BETTER," Father said.

Ve vere led back vo a room vhat had machines for ultrasounds and electrocardiograms. After I was done with both the ultrasound and the EKG we were taken back to an exam room and Nurse Perkins asked a bunch of questions for me. Soon Doctor Harvey was in the exam room.

"HOW IS MY SON?" Father asked.

"Well, you get right to the point," Dr. Harvey said.

"I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR BULLSHIT. I WANT TO TAKE HIM HOME IN A FEW DAYS!" Father said.

"Yeah well I don't want vo go home," I said quietly.

"Well in my professional opinion I haven't decided yet. How have you been feeling Gunnar?" Dr. Harvey said.

"Fine," I said.

"And you have been exercising, correct?" Dr. Harvey said.

"Yeah valking everyday when it has been nicer out. Adam, Astrid, and I vent for a little valk after Adam came back from visiting his sister, on Christmas day," I said.

"Good and the other days?" Dr. Harvey said as he grabbed his stethoscope.

"Been vorking out vith Coach's vreadmill but I like to keep it vo like three miles per hour. While Adam is working out as well," I said.

"Good, sounds like you have a solid plan in place,' Dr. Harvey said then he placed his tips into his ears and listened to my heart and lungs. After he was done, 'I don't see any reason for you not to travel on an airplane."

"Even if vhe flight is 23 hours?" I said.

"Yeah your EKG was good, the blood is pumping though your heart like normal, I think that what happened is that two of your arteries twisted and twisted back. But when you do return to Iceland if you want to touch base with a cardiologist there. Since there is nothing that can stop you. But I would be happy to see you as long as you are in America and until you are twenty-one. Which as that point you will need to switch to one of my colleagues at Abbott Northwestern. I would be happy to give you a recommendation," Dr. Harvey said.

"Okay," I said.

"FINALLY, SOME GOOD NEWS," Father said.

I just rolled my eyes
